Mononeucleosis ?

Has anyone ever had this?

I had a tooth pulled over 9 days ago and I have had chills, fever, and utter fatigue ever since. My glands on the left side of my neck have been swollen and pounding headaches throughout the day. I have been on Keflex for my tooth in case any bacteria started festering.

This has totally brought me down. It wasn't until last night when I was laying on the couch and they mentioned Mono on the t.v. that it hit me that maybe this tooth thing has triggered it. I went to WebMD and got all the info. I have an appointment today to see the doctor. My understanding is that you need a blood test and of course it is Friday so no results until Monday. I do know that nothing can be done but rest. Yuck.

I am so bummed. I can't even think of working out. I have been watching Cathe on FitTV and living my workout through that.

Sorry to sound so whiney. Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Dawn,

From what I understand, mono is something that can lie dormant in your system. It may be possible that it was triggered somehow, but I'm definitely not an expert. You could also be getting the flu or having reactions to the meds.

Hope you feel better soon!

What you have sounds more like infection or flu than mono. I never had mono, but I had a friend who did, and her biggest complaint was fatigue, but I don't remember her complaining about fever and chills or headaches.

Hi,

Mono involes abdominal pain where the liver and spleen are located. It is not an infection. It sounds like the antibiotic the doctor subscribed is not the correct one to kill the bacterial infection. Not all antibiotcis work for every bacteria. Certain antibiotics will kill only certain types. I would notify your dentist who pulled your tooth and let them know. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the blood stream and cause Bacterimia (infection of the blood stream) Fever, chills and fatigue are common with an infection.
Good luck and take care.

Not to scare you, but, but......I've been in a similar circumstance and I felt you should be aware of one other thing it could possible be. Let me begin with my story so you fully understand where I'm coming from. About three years ago, I had a tooth break, second to the last molar on the bottom. Dentist said I needed a root canal and started right away on it. Few days goes by and I'm in horrible pain, especially while laying down. Pain was very similar to when you whack your elbow and you get that radiating pain that lingers, only this never went away. My dentist goes on vacation so I'm sent to a endodontist you goes poking around, declares there must be a crack in the tooth that cannot be seen, and the tooth must be extracted. Tooth is removed and again pain remains, have second surgery where they scrape my jaw bone, still pain is there. This all happens in a time period of 6 weeks. By now I'm ready for a funny farm, I can't eat, sleep, workout, cold and hot flashes all the time. Have a bone infection ruled out. Finally find a doctor who thinks the Trigeminal Nerve has been damaged in all of this and puts me on Amitriptyline, which is a anti-depprestant, but works wonders in blocking nerve pain.

To this day, I cannot back off my medication. Saw the head of neurology at Dartmouth, and he has had the same thing happen to himself. He explains that if, from day one, I was diagnosed correctly in the beggining and put onto the proper medication, I could have avoided permanent damage. I won't get into the long explaination of how nerve pain and the brain work, but the sooner you intercept the pain, the better. Please, please, have this ruled out for yourself before you get to the point I was at. As I said in the beggining, I don't want to scare you, I just don't want anyone to ever go through what I went through. It was the absolute worst time of my life. Maybe if you were to go to your primary care doctor for another opinion if the pain continues. Sorry to be so long winded, it just touches a nerve (NO PUN INTENDED!!!!) with me.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Dawn,
Have you been back to your dentist since these symptoms started? My DH is a dentist and this could be related to your dental treatment so it may be good to rule that out first. I hope you are feeling better soon.
Take Care!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your responses. I went to the Doc this afternoon. He ordered immediate blood work done. Full panel, Mono, CMV, Epstein Barr. I had to have two huge tubes taken 15 minutes apart and from each arm. Not sure why. He changed my anitbiotic from Keflex to Leviquim. Nice thing is I know him as a friend so I am very comfortable with him. He is also on call this weekend. No activity whatsoever. That means no high school basketball game tonight - big game too/both teams one loss - and rest the entire weekend. I think what really tipped him was a 5 lb weight loss in ten days without working out. I may have dinner with some friends tomorrow night as it will be low key. Can't drink either. Really doesn't sound good to be honest. That should tell you something because I am usually ready for a glass of wine and/or a cold beer by Friday. teheheheh

I will let you know how the blodd work goes. Thanks again.

Dawn

Dawn I hope you get to the bottom of this! Rest up and pamper yourself. Let us know how you heal!

Mono FYI

Dawn, glad you followed up with your doc. I hope you are feeling better ASAP, keep us posted on your recovery.

Just wanted to answer a few questions and clarify a little about mono. It is not a bacterial infection, BUT it is a VIRAL INFECTION caused by the Epstein-Barr virus of the herpes family.
100% of those infected complain of malaises and fatigue. 85% have a fever and swollen nodes. You may also experience headaches, tonsillitis, rash, enlarged spleen and/or liver(you may experience pain but not always).

RE: Mono FYI

Hi, hope you feel better soon. Mono is caused by members of the Herpes virus family, such as EBV (Epstein Barre) or CMV (Cytomegalovirus). Primary infections are not always symptomatic and when symptomatic include fever, pharyngitis, malaise and sometimes splenomegaly. Not everyone has all of the symptoms. Herpes viruses typically persist for life and can be reactivated by various stresses (an example is chicken pox, another type of herpes virus that manifests as chicken pox during the primary infection but manifests as shingles during reactivated infection that occurs later in life)but I don't think the illness for a reactivated infection induces the syptoms typically seen with primary infection with EBV or CMV. These viruses are suspected to be associated with chronic fatigue syndrome.

RE: Mono FYI

I had acute mono (glandular) in early 04. I'm still getting over it. I had a very sore throat with lots of pus that was like tonsillitis. Plus fatigue!
Crossing my fingers that you don't have it.
