Mammo callback

JumpHigher

Cathlete
I just had my yearly mammogram and got a "callback," which means something doesn't look quite right, or whatever.

Has this happened to any of you?

Thanks,
Marla

No, but my thoughts, prayers and good vibes are all coming your way.

Good luck, I hope things are OK.

Marcia.

Marla,

Yes this has happened to me before. They wanted magnifications of an area that turned out to only be calcifications. Chances are it's nothing more than something like that. I think it's pretty routine for them to want a better or closer look.

Don't worry! Good luck!

Marla,

My mother had a call back too. They seen a shadow or dark spot and when they did it over, it was nothing.

I will keep you in my prayers.

I have had it happen twice and it was nothing. Sometimes when they "squish" you, they just can't get a good clear look at everything. The place I went to has a doctor read it right then so you don't have to sweat it out wondering what it going on! Hope all is well with you - please let us know!

Hi Marla,
Yes this has happened to me too. I have two sisters and they're both breast cancer survivors, so when I got my callback I panicked. My doctor ordreed an ultrasound and a consult with a specialist (just because of my family history). It turned out to be nothing...just calcifications, which is a fairly common occurrence.

Yes, it happened to me and it was scary. It turned out to be calcifications, but they just wanted to make sure. I'll be praying that yours is as simple as mine was!

Happened to me on my first mammogram! They did an ultrasound a few weeks later and was just normal tissue. Got all stressed out for nothing!

What type of mammogram did you have? A digital can show so much more detail, that if yours was not digital it very well may be nothing. Just a thought!

Keep us posted.

I had my first mammo at 35 and I got a callback the next day - talk about nervous! I know that they tell you not to wear deoderant and lotion, so it does not interfere the the x-ray, so on my next appointment I wore no deoderant or lotion anywhere and it came back fine. I could not leave until I got the results. I think they like to do a second one just to double check little thing.

It happened to my mom twice and she was not diagnosed with cancer either time.

The first time they did a lumpectomy to remove the suspicious tissue, did a biopsy on it and it came back fine-this had to be 20 years ago if not more.

The 2nd time was within the past year and a different procedure was performed in order to remove the suspicious tissue. Again, it came back fine. :)

This has happended to me twice in the past ten years .. both times it turned out to be nothing. I tend to have "lumpy" breast tissue ... makes the x-rays difficult to read. This last year they did digital x-rays ... they're supposed to give better reads, just more expensive. Try not to worry too much, but definitely go back for the additional testing.

I appreciate all your responses. I go back in three weeks for more films and possibly an ultrasound (depends on the films).

I was on my period when I got my mammogram (and I probably will be next time, too). I don't know if that makes a difference, but my breasts do get sore leading up to my period, and sometimes they hurt the few first days, too.

My body is changing -- I'm 45, close to 46 -- and my hormones are a little whacked at times. Perimenopause is interesting, I'll tell ya.

Only my left breast used to get sore before my period, but now my right one does, too. Sigh.

This was already a stressful day and coming home to learn this didn't help. Oh well. Life is like that sometimes.

Thanks for all your support. :)

Marla it's me. Please dont' worry. It can be something so simple and not uncommon. A shadow of a film that wasn't clear. Somtimes I swear if I breath wrong or I don't inhale and hold my breath when they say I need another film. I'm mean it is rarly that I don't get second films all the time. I swear there may have been one time in my life I got clear films the first time with my dense tissue. All my sister have had second films.. I wish ever hospital was like mine and would read the mammo that day. If I need films I go in right then before I even get redressed and they read it that day.. They should really make it a priority at all hosptials to rid the unecessary worry that it puts on a women to make them wait. Last year I have a mammo, ultrasound and an MRI. All clear. Remember I even had a lump they could feel but couldn't see. When it all came down it was nothing. Your not alone. Don't worry!!!!!!!!!!! Call me if you want to chat.

As for my hormones you know how that has been for me and I"m 35. My breast have been extremely sore before my menstration now. Remember breast cancer lumps rarly hurt or are sore.

Hi,

For me, they always do a sonogram along with the mammogram and I've been getting them for over 10 years. Well, they found not 1, not 2, but 6 things, which turned out to be fibroaednomas. I had to have an MRI and it all turned out to be OK. I did find out that about 80% of all things found in breast tissue are benign. I could only feel one of mine, but then, the surgeon and I have felt that one for several years. She said that they had probably been there for a long time and that it was just now that they could see them.

Try not to worry, but I know that is nearly impossible. I about went nuts during the 4 weeks all of this was going on for me.

Pleae don't worry! I get callbacks all the time. It's always turned out to be calcifications. If there's even a teensy-tiny chance it's something, it's early in the game. But probably 99.999999%, it's fine. Don't worry :)

Karen!!! It's so good to see you here! You are a sight for sore eyes (even on the internet). :)

Thanks for posting. I do remember all that you went through and I will listen to you. It was just a bit of a crappy end to an otherwise stressful day. I'll call you soon so we can catch up. Regarding the gym job, it seems like the honeymoon is over. I got my ACE certification because I wanted to help people be fit and it's turning into a quotea-based, salesman-like (yuck!) job.

I think I may need to go out on my own to fulfill my dream/vision of personal training.

I'm feeling unsettled, pressured, and conflicted with the gym job.

Thanks, Karen, so much for posting. I did get your last email but I've been "up to here" with work/studying/kids' stuff. I will write back soon.

I'll talk to you soon.

Hugs,
Marla

Don't worry Marla. I know how much you are undertaking at the moment. Remember what we talked about. If you know it doesn't feel right then get out before it consumes you. We know what kind of people we are and we know how we can let a situation continue and it's our health that suffers.Life is to short to not live life doing what you wanted. :)

Marla,
Happened to me too. Turned out that what they were seeing was a lymph node that was further down than normal. Apparently my lymph nodes are headed south. Still not sure I understood the doctor completely but it was obvious that she wasn't concerned. Try not to worry (easier said than done, I know).

Happened to me on my first mammo - wound up having a needle biopsy and the thing was a benign cyst. Try not to worry.

Thanks, everyone. It really helped me a lot. You all helped me feel less alone and less scared.

Thanks. :)
