Madonna - 3-4 hour workouts!

Madonna used to claim all she did was Ashtanga, but I remember hearing her in other interviews making comments about going for a run or using her stationary bike, all around the same time. I'm certain she adored yoga and threw herself into it, but I doubt that was all she did for any serious length of time. She's too hardcore.

I agree with those who say she's looking too drawn. I've always loved and admired her, but even I flinch when I see her lately.

And Tneah...I couldn't agree more! She doesn't have to retire herself to the nearest rocking chair, but come on ~ Justin Timberlake is young enough to be her son. That's gross.

My favorite Madonna phase was the "Ray of Light" one. She seemed so thoughtful and mature. She was still in awesome shape too, but nothing scary.

I remember Jane Fonda saying that she and Ted Turner (way back when they were married) would go for a grueling 3-4 hour hike togther and he'd collapse in a chair afterward, watch TV and drink a beer. She, on the other hand, felt like she hadn't "really" worked out so she'd spend another hour on the stairmaster. Ummm, okay...

I think for some people, exercise becomes an escape from sad realities they don't want to face, and provides them with a feeling of control over their life--control they desperately seek (similar to anorexia and bulimia). The endorphin rush they get from exercise is a side benefit they may come to depend on.

Madonna's fierce devotion to her looks and body sure seems like vanity run amuck and an unwillingness to step out of the spotlight. She'll be 75 years old and still wearing fishnets and stillettos on stage, grinding away while warbling, "like a virgin..." Is she competing with Rihanna or her daughter?

In conclusion, ick...

Jane doesn't do that anymore and Madonna, as was previously stated, has always been all about Madonna. The woman was born a flaming ball of (me me me) insecurity.

Baylian-

I just read the link that you posted about Madonna's trainer's techniques... its sounds like a crock to me!!! Never lift more than 3 lbs? Come ON!

I do know Madonna is pretty hard core about her diet too... I remember watching that autobiographical movie about her several years back and she was eating some pretty composty looking stuff.. I'm sure that woman hasn't had a Kitkat in years!

Hopefully Guy R. will find somebody nicer to hook up with.. he has always seemed pretty decent.

I guess i won't be scoring any popularity points here but i love Madonna. I'll be seeing her on Saturday in concert.

As for working out for 3-4 hours a day, that's part of her job. She is a performer and needs to be in good shape to be able to put on her shows. Most professional dancers put in that kind of training time. Many other celebrities have been reported to have crazy training schedules especially when preparing for a role or tour etc...

I do agree that now that she is getting older, her "sinewy" look makes her look older. Her forearms and hands sometimes appear very veiny and old in pics. She is very dedicated to her fitness and macrobiotic diet.

Madonna is known to be a perfectionist and sets very high standards for herself and others. She is very driven and committed to her career and probably very difficult to live with. What celebrity would be easy to live with? A lot of celebrities have big egos and crave the limelight.

I think she is a great entertainer but my husband thinks she's gross.

Well I always liked her, and after her daughter and Ray of Light, I had to give her credit as someone who GREW UP...but then I saw her belittling her husband on TV as he was talking and thought there is alot of seething going on in that relationship! Sorry to hear about it...she's gone too extreme in her pursuit of youth and fitness....but that's her...

You know what? I actually agree a lot with your post! You make very valid points. But I still think Madonna's a freak. ;):p

I wonder if that includes her

rehearsals? Because when I had dance as a teen (don't look the part btw.) we would rehearse a lot and that could be considered a workout. I remember being in high school and having pe three times a week, physical therapy (a workout btw.) and two dance classes per week. On Wednesdays it would be three hours. One hour at school and two in the evening at dance class. So I wonder if they are including the rehearsal time. Bear in mind that she (I believe.) was admitted into university on a dance scholarship.

Not that I'm making excuses.

I'm just surprised. I thought she gave up that workout schedule when she had the babies. That she dropped it down to just twenty minutes a day of yoga.

LOL! I can totally understand why a lot of people would think she is a little "freaky". She definitely pushes the envelope and makes up her own rules.

Man, do i wish i had her discipline when it comes to diet though. Maybe after all these years she doesn't miss eating junk.

I coached a girl

that was a family that practiced macrobiotics. The mother was a certified chef in it. Lots of training.

This might be TMI but after eating dinner there I was regular for days . . . .

It's an anti cancer diet too.

Okay, when I was performing as a professional dancer with a company we would take class first, anywhere from 1 1/2 hours to 1 hour 45 minutes, which consisted of 30 minutes or so of barre work, then you would advance to different floor combinations in groups. After a short break we would rehearse for about 4 hours or so. Now, bear in mind that rehearsing isn't necessarily nonstop movement for that amount of time. If you weren't in a particular piece then you would stretch, sit around, talk, whatever until your time came around. Do you work hard? Absolutely. This would be my daily routine 6 days a week. We would eliminate alot of rehearsing on performance days because of the class preparation, make up, blocking, etc.
When you weren't rehearsing or performing, you would take 2 classes a day minimum, and maybe a pilates session.

I think however, that Madonna's working out like she does is a whole different thing. 4 hours of hardcore stuff is not the same as what dancers do, and imo is potential harmful to the body.
jmo...

Baylian makes a good point - ever read that book, "Crazy,Sexy Cancer"? That gal does 32 oz of raw green juicing and all sorts of stuff....good point...Madonna is a phenom of fitness - until her joints start wearing out, if they are not already!!! Then she'll be fit and achy like me!

I have to agree with a lot of this post too.

This is a woman that makes her living on her physical capacity and like it or lump it, her husband knew that a long time ago. Would we all condemn someone with olympic dreams for working out a lot and sacrificing family time? I realize she isn't a sport figure but I think there is a point to be made that she has to be in good physical condition to perform as she does.

Secondly, like it or not, we all have different priorities and different focuses. Just because she isn't dumping her career and throwing her entire self into saving life with Guy doesn't mean she is a bad mother or selfish.

And lastly, we aren't all living in her world. It's hard to say what "else" there is behind closed doors that we don't know about in our judgments (ie execise becoming an escape from life, other marital issues)

Just my two cents!

You took the words right out of my mouth. I can't believe how harshly everyone is judging her as if they know her. Nobody has any idea what is going on in her life, in her mind, behind closed doors. You have no idea what makes a person work out like a mad woman and try to control the amount of food they eat until they are at an almost unhealthy weight. Ask me how I know. It makes me sad to read everything you all are writing about her without even knowing her.

Personally I think Madonna is looking to lean and weird...all that dieting and working out is actually aging her..too lean makes you look old period. It just winds up taking its toll on your face for sure.

Yeah, I always feel for the kids in anyone's divorce.

I also think parading around in her S&M costumes at this point is a bit tired, she might look good in them, yadda, yadda, yadda, but there comes a point in time where you need to kind of "chill"...not that you have to "act your age" but not try and act like you are 20 years old again, it just is kinda pitiful and sad. I hated seeing her rip off Justin Timberlakes shirt in that video, it was sorta freaky and strange.

Totally agree. (Hi there!!!)

That is how I feel about it, but it always makes me sad when I hear about people splitting. You have to be a concrete block for divorce to not affect you, no matter who you are or what your station in life is. I am grateful that the problems that I have had with DH weren't blown up all over the tabloids and tv for everyone else to see - I can't imagine many marriage could survive that, and I think that's probably why so many celebrity couples don't make it. Heck, how many people come out alright that aren't married???
