Lurker's Invitation

Janie - Welcome Back!! Hope things are as good as they can be - will wait to hear from you later.

Shadowpup - The kickbox workout sounds like a good one - I like sometimes having something that is in between other workouts I have - which makes it a keeper. If we had a workout that was just like something else we had - why keep it? I was wondering about Tracy's teaching style - what is she like? - or maybe make that Who is she like? Do you like her?

Laura - I'm a little bit scared of doing the 1RM for legs :( - I'm actually afraid. I think I'm going to have some serious DOMS - but it is good to know you liked the legs. Congrats on the 5lb loss - wow - you are doing so well - this will certainly motivate you to keep this going!!! Do you feel that SB is working for you? I tried that diet for a little while - it was a good one for Rex - because it wasn't teaching him about calories or anything - he just cut out the carbs.

Michelle - glad to see you are back - and of course, keeping on your STS course of training. Travel Fit sounded like a good workout too - oh my - makes me want to pop it in right now and do it. We are having temps in the 40's and the snow is steadily melting!! I'm sort of bummed about it. It was so pretty and white - hate to see it go.

Well - worked so hard on Saturday and took my tree down - actually the big, real tree is Rex's tree - that is how I think of it. Funny - he didn't help at all with that? He stayed outside all day long - and was even miffed when I asked that he take the couple strands of lights down that I couldn't reach near the top - I finally told him that he wasn't fooling a living soul - and the reason he never came inside was that he was avoiding helping me. Oh well - I didn't really expect help - not sure if I would have took it if he had offered. There is still a lot more to do - but the house already looks so empty. But I'm actually excited to decorate now for Valentine's Day - this is much more low key than Christmas - so to decorate for that will take about 15 minutes or less!!:p

I am thinking of doing Tracy Anderson's Mat workout tonight - just because I am majorly intrigued. I meant to preview last night but never made it.

Hope everyone has a great day.:D

Welcome back Janie. Good to have you back with us. We'll be waiting to hear from you after you get some rest.

It's a beautiful day here in Virginia. Ripken and I had a really great walk this morning. Now, I think he is snoozing in his daddy's office. Getting motivated to change my clothes and get going on STS disc 8. Sister is already done and she sent me a message indicating that her triceps were already talking to her. She just got the Cathe tower and used it for the first time today.;)
I might give the 3rd segment of step moves a go again--or at least preview it, again. I'm started to get fixated on hitting that one-two-three move. I've got an order pending on ShopCathe, waiting for them to activate my gift certificates. And I'll be ordering those pace weights that Shadowpup recommended later today.

Does everyone have this day off?
~michelle

Got my workout done late this morning. The tricep and back routines don't make me sweat as much as the leg and chest/shoulder/bicep routines. Wonder why, because I sure do feel those tricep muscles talking to me later in the day. I also worked on the 3rd segment of step moves and I think I've got that one-two-three move figured out. I'll see tomorrow morning when I try Step Moves again.

Got my order straightened out on ShopCathe. Come to find out, you have to record your gift certificates first and then put in your order--not the other way around. So, I had to cancel the order I did yesterday and reorder today. Nancy at ShopCathe was responsive and very helpful. Now, I think I will go put in my order for the pace weights and that will use up all my Christmas money.

Good Morning,

I see most all are still doing the wonderful Shock Cardio and STS series. I left my DVD's behind in fear that at the airport they might take them away from me. Joey should be home tomorrow or the next day. Then I will do them with you.

Congratulations on all the gains you've made. Losing weight and gaining strength. Not an easy task, but I can see with Shock Cardio how much fun you are having. Can't wait to get started with them as well.

I bought magnets from a company on line to replace the Plate Mates because they were so expensive. It was suggested from a person here on Cathe. Left a message to her to help me remember the address, and once I get it will relate it back to you.

They are great to attach these to your hand weight and/or weight lifting bar. They work remarkably well, and so inexpensive. I'll let you know when I get the info.

Precious Mom:

Got to Mom on Friday (1/8/2010) around 8:00 pm. Greeted everyone and went to Mom's room. Saw right away she was breathing with an opened mouth. Was afraid to hug her, didn't want to hurt her in any way. She had her eyes open, so I just stroked her face and told her I was here, and was so glad to see her. That I missed her so very much and love her.

The atmosphere was a mixture of emotions. Laughter, crying, snapping at each other, sorrow and much faith that God's will be done soon, so Momma wouldn't suffer.

A little history of Mom. She loved to sing and she was very good at it. She had nine of us and so we got to know some of her favorite songs she used to sing to us. Now it was our turn to sing to her. Everyone was there except two of the nine, for reasons of there own, but I know their spirits were with her. Also during her years with Alzheimer, never once did she forget Dad. She always knew and recognized him. Isn't that amazing!

We sang, prayed, touched her warmly, talked to her, on how great a mother she is. She was my hero. The best Mom anyone could have. Always was there for us, taught us right from wrong, and loved us unconditionally. A true Mother always. I've been so lucky to have such a mother. All of us we found out, knew that we were her favorite. How cool is that? To find time for each and every one of us and to make sure we understood with certainty that we were loved.

We stayed up very late that night then made our beds. We girls all slept in the same room together, and boys had a room of their own. Chatted, laughed, told funny stories. Then finally just couldn't keep our eyes open any longer.

The next morning we all noticed Mom was breathing deeper and heavier. From the top of her nose between the eyes down to her chin, was pasty looking. I knew (from taking care of a few elderlies) that was a sign that her death would be near. All during the day her eyes were never opened and she continued to breath deeper and longer, faster and louder. We all said our good byes and how proud we are of her. That she can let go now if she wanted to.

Near 7:00 pm we knew the end was any moment now and Dad came in and started praying The Lord's Prayer. We all joined in. As soon as she heard Dad, she opened her eyes and looked right at him. You could see she was trying to smile at him. He put his hand on her forehead and I put my hand over his and he told her that he will be with her very soon. That she was the greatest little girl he's ever known. We all told her, not to worry about Dad, that we would take care of him. Dad again said that he would meet her there very soon. A few more breaths while looking at Dad, she closed her eyes and died.

All her children, if not physically then by spirit and husband was with her, she was not alone and she was so loved, not only by us, but by anyone who ever met her. She had that charming way about her. It was the most beautiful death I've ever witnessed.

They took Mom away about an hour after she passed.

Believe me, I'm going to miss her with all my heart, but I also know that everyone has to go sometime and the way she went was wonderful. I hope I can go like that as well someday.

The next day, most of us went to Sunnyside to prepare her to be buried there next to one of her son's (David, one of my brothers) and her parents and in-laws. All very close to one an other.

We had a day of viewing and prayed a Rosary for Mom on Friday (2/15) in the Funeral home. Then she had a Mass for her on Sunday (2/16). And then went to the cometary through the town of Sunnyside with a police escort. Said our last goodbyes and went to a place for a final gathering with friends and family. We ate, had fond memories. There was a picture show that my niece had put together, showing Mom very young, meeting Dad, pictures of their wedding, each child she gave birth to, right up until her final days. That was really hard to take, but was needed to start the grieving process.

Now for the grieving part, which sucks, but I'm doing better as the days come and go. There are good days and bad days. My dear Mommy, I'm missing her so much.

I hope you all remember to hug your loved ones tight and make sure you tell them you love them.

I'm a lurker...and Michelle's sister. I peak in on the goings on every once in a while.

Um, I just read about Janie's Moms passing. WOW! God bless you, and your family and most of all your Mom.

My deepest sympathy...
Renee

Nice to meet you, Renee! It's been fun hearing about how you and Michelle work out together - and sounds like you've been doing really well, too :) Makes me miss my own sis, who lives too far away.

Janie, thank you for sharing the last days of your mom. You painted such a loving picture of her, and what her relationship with your dad must have been like. What your family gave each other during those hours is special and awe-inspiring and heartwrenching, all at once. It is clear at least in part how you came to be the wonderful person you are. ((Janie)). Just ((hugs)).

Janie--God bless you and your family. Thank you for sharing this precious moment in your life. (((((HUGS))))). We are here for you.

Wow there has been a lot of activity going on here!:D

I just jumped on for a quick check-in as I am pooped and going to take a hot bath and go to bed, I will spend time reading the posts tomorrow and will be back for personals!

I taught only one of my 3 classes today, due to the holiday, so did my Pilates class at Studio Darshan and then did the cardio only portion of MMA Boxing cause I had worked my abs pretty hard today in class and had done abs yesterday as well......

be back later to read up on ya'll's day and Janie I am glad you are back with us and a quick welcome/hello to Catchick65! Glad to see you here!

I have been trying to ignore the fact that I have to go on a short trip myself at oh-dark-hundred tomorrow ... sigh. Lots of packing today, and it was a long day at the office too.

But let me check in my workout because I'm really proud of having set a personal pullup record! Today I almost didn't do my STS at all ... but I saw Michelle did her disk eight and that's what I was supposed to do, and with this travel, I needed to do it so as to rest then finish week three on Friday. Decided to do it anyway. The first two sets of pullups went well - all twelve in a row each set.

Then it got to set three, and I was feeling beat ... really straining by the time I hit ten. Then the oddest thought hit me. Has anyone read Born To Run? I picked it up on Audible, and had just finished the part where an ultramarathoner got himself up off the ground after collapsing in a heap by deciding to pretend he'd just started. It occurred to me I could pretend I hadn't done ten pullups and just start counting again :) I did that, and ended up zoning out and kind of waking up after doing another five. That made FIFTEEN in a row. That's better than last April, where I did sets of 14, 12, 10. Plus I was stronger at the end. Woo hoo! :D:D:D:D:D:D

BUT a rest day or two is definitely due. I haven't had a complete day off in almost two weeks, and even my last flexibility/TRX day was a week ago Friday. Bordering on overtraining ... which is probably why it was so hard to make myself pick up disk 8. The workouts have been so much fun lately, I haven't wanted to slow down til now!

Renee, It's so nice to finally meet you! Thank you for your support. That was really nice and calming.

I hope you will continue to post with us, we've heard many good things about you, and you would make such a great addition to this forum.

Deborah/Michelle, Thank you for the much needed hugs.

Laura, Hope you had a nice rest. Can't believe you had a class at all today. Even had time to do the cardio potion of MMA. Good for you!

Deborah, I don't blame you for not wanting to go on your trip in the wee hours of the night. Especially when the day itself was a long one.:(

I'm so proud of you on your gain, and how you got there. Our bodies (if we listen) tells us all about when we over train. Pull ups are so darn hard for me, but then again, I don't try as hard on them as you did. Wow! I'm going to have to try that. (pretend) Also will have to read "Born To Run", sounds like an inspiring book.

Enjoy your well deserved rest days, and be safe on your travels.

Janie

Lots of activity here.

After lunch I felt absolutely sick to my stomach. I don't know why - I came home and I thought - well, if I lay down for awhile it will go away - well, it didn't. :( I spent the rest of the evening doing nothing and eating nothing and finally just giving up and going to bed. The girls and I crawled in together - I had the hardest time getting warm - so I cuddled up with them and we all drifted off. Then at 20 minutes of twelve the phone rang - I knew it was DH calling in. For a moment I thought he would give up and hang up and I could go back to sleep - but he didn't - so I got up and answered the phone. He said he just got finished there and had been working from the moment he got to LA until now!!! I was sleepy - and told him I was getting off the phone. He was amazed that I was in bed. Feel better this morning - but haven't had anything to eat yet. We'll see how that goes.

Janie - wonderful story of your mother - and it sounded like there was no better way to leave this world than to have your family be there and have all of that love surround you. She sounded like a very special lady and I'm very sorry for your loss. Your description reminded me of watching my own Father pass on - we all knew it was the right thing but it didn't make it any easier. My heart goes out to you. (((Hugs))).

Renee - It is nice to meet you. We have heard a lot about you and would love to get to know you better. When my sister and I lived at home together - so many moons ago - we would work out together. I found it incredibily motivating.

Shadowpup - 15 pull ups - Woo Hoo!!! Congratulations!! I love the idea of telling yourself that you hadn't started yet and knocking out 5 more. I used to run a lot - and if you know anything about Western PA - the terrain is all hills. There were several very steep hills along my route and I would look at the ground and pretend it was flat to get through it. You deserve a rest day!!

Michelle - Isn't it fun to figure out a step combo!!!??!?! I'm glad you got it down now - I just love doing that - I love the challenge and the mind body connection. So you have been working hard - when is your rest day during the week?

Laura - If you don't teach all your classes - who picks them up? Or were they canceled? You have been inspiring me to be diligent with my eating. I got on the scale yesterday morning (after a really long hiatus away from it) to survey the damage. :(:(:( I thought - well - I can't hide from it - I have to face it and do something about it. So I got on the scale this morning and I weighed a pound and 1/2 less :D - I don't actually believe that I lost a pound a 1/2 overnight - especially since I have had nothing to eat but well - I was secretly thrilled.

Hope everyone has a great day.

I'm happy that I was able to help motivate Shadowpup to hunker down and get disc 8 done. This morning after the walkabout with Ripken, I put step moves in the dvd player and got all the way through it with no problems. I finally have mastered that one-two-three step! It's a pretty intense routine after you get the steps down and can concentrate on putting all your energy into the workout. I'd put it right up there with Rhythm Step as a favorite. Now, I have to decide which Shock Cardio I'm going to work on next: one of the MMAs or HITT 30/30--any votes on this decision?

It was nice of sister to pop by the forum. I keep encouraging her to join us but she hasn't gotten hooked on the Cathe check-in forums, yet.

Shoegal: wonder if it was something you ate or if you just got a little bug. Glad to hear that you are feeling better.

Laura: are you getting/going to get lots of snow? That storm out west looks like it could really dump a bunch of snow in the mountain areas.

Janie: hope you are able to get back to your "routine" soon. I think a return to some semblance of normalcy helps us deal with periods of grief.

Shadowpup: congratulations on those chinups. Which version do you do? Does anybody do the levitation chinups like Cathe? Another thing to strive for.

Okay--so Shadowpup's reference to Born to Run has inspired another idea for a name for our forum if we decide to change our moniker:
1. Getting our licks in (ripken inspired)
2. Born to sweat
3. Born to exercise

I'd throw in Born to Run, but this really isn't a running crowd.

~michelle

Did "Swing Sensation" from Core Rhythms. My legs were sore and I'm waiting for the DOMS to kick in. Ouch! But in a good way.

Shoegal, Awww, I hope you are not getting the flu. Drink lots of water and rest.

I'm sorry for your loss too.:( How long has it been since your Father passed? Thank you so much for your support.

Michelle, I'll be joining everyone with Shock Cardio as soon as my Joey gets home tonight. Any suggestions which one to start off with? Do HITT 30/30. Why? Just because. :D

Tell your sister Renee, whenever she wants to say anything just pop in anytime. She is so welcome.

I'll be getting in a routine starting tomorrow. Will start with a Shock Cardio. Joey can unpack and rest, but then the next day we do STS for 3 months. It's going to be so good to do our routines again.:)

So far I like the new names. "Born to Sweat" sounds like a winner to me. What do you all think?

Here is a link you all might find helpful to add to your exercise equipment, especially the STS series. These are magnets that can add to your barbell or free weight. They are a huge saving compared to Plate Mates. I'm needing more, so will be ordering very soon. I'm buying the donut ones for myself and ankle ones for my sissy.

Will check back later.

All you lovely ladies joined me for dinner tonight! My girls are with their Nanna down in Boulder :( and my husband is still working:( and I am so not used to being alone! So I read your posts and caught up and as far as I remember I didn't miss a day it has just been so busy on this thread!

Janie: what a wonderful sharing of your mother, what a special woman to have as a mother, you are lucky to have had this precious time on Earth with her and I know you will miss her. Remember to breathe her spirit deeply into your self these next few weeks so that her being becomes alive in you and the way that she taught you to be in your life is how she will live on in this world as she has moved on to the next place. Take time to heal, to grieve, to remember and be gentle with yourself for awhile. Routine is good and sometimes grief will sneak up on you in an unexpected moment (triggered by a commercial perhaps or something unexpected) and it is healing to be present with that emotion when you can.

Shadowpup: Holy Cow you are my new idol! I can't even do one lousey full pull up with good form!:p:( Well with time I will just need to work on them more. Hadn't even tried one until P90X for a million years....Hey do you know if anyone has taken the time to enter Cathe exercises in the SP exercise tracker? I haven't been using fitday and trying to consolidate my web-space so just wondering?

Michelle: way to stick with something until you get it mastered! I haven't tired Step Moves because I don't have the time to learn something right now, if I have time to do a DVD I just want to workout and not have to learn it. So I am saving it for a day I have more time....Neither the Hiits or the MMA take much learning curve time so you are good for either one you choose.. I love the MMA I think they are fun but the Hiits are more intense just very short.

Shoegal: Hope you are on the mend. Thanks for the support on the weight loss. Yes the SB does work for me. I don't do well with carbs, I just can't seem to lose weight when I eat them even if my calories are in a deficit. My mom is the same way as well. I have diabetes on both sides of my family, both type 1 & 2. I think I just don't process them well,, my body turns them straight to fat. I don't plan on never eating carbs again but it helps me to take them out completely for awhile than I can focus on adding them back in slowly until I start to stop losing weight. The food I have been eating is delicious and I eat 3 meals and 2-3 snacks a day so I am never ever hungry and I don't feel deprived in the least.

Did Step Moves! Wow! I love this one. Was all sweaty and breathing hard, getting rid of toxic stuff out of my body. OOOOOO that felt good. I missed exercising.:D Faltered a little here and there, but will do better next time around.

Laura, I bet it is very different for you to be alone. When I was raising my daughter, I found it very odd to be alone too. Just have to stay busy. Did we have a good dinner?;)

I like when you mentioned to breath in my Mom's spirit. I will close my eyes and just breath in deeply and think of the many times she shared her love with me. Thank you.:)

Have a good work day.

Janie

STS disc 9, legs, this morning. Whew! I know I sound like a broken record but those leg workouts are so intense. Ripken likes them because the sweat just comes rolling off me. He can get plenty of licks in.

Janie: how did you do with that one-two-three move on the 3rd combo on Step Moves? It took me 4 times around and some extra run throughs just on the 3rd combo to get that one down. I previewed HIIT 30/30 yesterday and I'm thinking that dvd will be next. I'm also wondering if you and Shadowpup can provide advice on good workouts for the active recovery week. I've been reading on the STS forum what others have tried. I don't want to go too light, but I don't want to wear myself out.

Laura: somehow I missed that extra meal with you last night--darn! Sister started eating "clean" when she started STS earlier this month and she tells me that she has lost 5-6 pounds. That is pretty amazing. I don't think I could be as disciplined as she is about eating clean. I'm okay as long as I don't go overboard on the calories, but sister really has to watch her carbs big time. Sounds like you are the same way.

DH just called. He is on his way to see his urologist. He has been having some aches and pains in his lower left body cavity, just above the groin, and sometimes he gets a burning sensation when he is urinating. But the later symptom is not consistent. Anyway, he called the urologist 2 weeks ago and told him what his symptoms are and now he finally goes in for his appointment. I doubt we are going to have any resolution on what is going on today but it's a first step. I'm thinking I ought to make appointments for both of us to go get physicals. That would be interesting, to say the least. Neither of us has had a physical in years and we really don't have a primary care physician. His cardiologist gave us a recommendation for one and I trust him to recommend a primary care doc that will be to DH's liking. I just need to make the dang appointments.

Okay--need to eat some lunch. Hope everyone is having a good day.
~michelle

Michelle, I have to agree with you there about disk 9. They are HARD! Get me all the time.

That's where I faltered the most on Step Moves. I'm thinking it will take another 2 or 3 tries before I get it just right.

For myself while doing the STS Series, I think I'll close my eyes mix up the DVD's and pick one for the next day. No, just kidding. Will chose one that would be appropriate. For instance don't want to chose a step workout if I just finished an STS leg workout.

For an active recovery week or two; Yoga/Stretch for sure every other day, to elongate those hard worked muscles. On the opposite days floor cardio, steps, jogging, bicycling, walking, swimming, golfing, horseback riding...Anything really that you enjoy. No weight lifting though! Or do no workouts at all, it's up to you, just listen to your body.

Keep us posted on how your darling husband is fairing. Oh, I think a yearly physical is essential. Glad to hear you will be making the appts.

Enjoy your lunch,

Janie

Last night I did the infamous Tracy Anderson method mat workout. Tracy kept preaching about her method saying that her "rotations" will be unlike anything you have ever done before and she is going to mix it up and do these exercises from many different angles and directions. She says very little - and you are left to pick up the exercises without her telling you that she is moving on and without much instruction. She said that no matter what body type you are her method will give you the look of somebody in the New York City ballet - someone with "teeny tiny arms." Well - I don't fully agree with that - but I do agree that the way your muscles are shaped depends on how you overload them - either with heavy weights or with many repetitions - so a dancer's body is going to be different from a weight lifter's body. She said to do this tape 5 or 6 times a week and you will see amazing results. I'm skeptical - if I keep doing this video 5 times a week - every week I believe my muslces will grow accustomed to the movements - It won't be challenging any longer and I will stop getting anyhting out of it. I also think it is trying to achieve something completely different from STS - and I really can't give it a fair test right now. I did actually like it - and I did think my arms might fall off. I remember doing a "Susan Powter" step workout my girlfriend had once. It was very very basic - we stepped up and down and moved our arms the same way for what seemed like an enternity. My arms hurt then too - the movement was constant - and it went on forever - Tracy's workout was like that. I'll never forget that Susan Powter workout because I could have died from the boredom of it.

Janie - I loved Step Moves as well - I agree it is a great workout - I really liked the length of it as well.

Michelle - Let us know how your DH's appointment turned out. I do hope this is a minor problem - and is easily fixed. You are scaring me with your description of the STS legs. Is it way harder than Gym Style - Butts & Gutts?

Laura - I am spending a lot of alone time myself too. With Rex out of town all week I find I'm not loving being without him. Although I generally don't spend too much time with him during the week - I go my way - and he goes his when we get home - it just feels weird that he isn't around at all.

Hope everyone is enjoying their week!!! :)

It is very strange not to have my girls with me!:( This morning I was going to wake up early and get some stuff done but I just couldn't motivate to get up as I didn't HAVE to get up to get the girls to school! It is lonely but in someways it is nice to have this alone time, to focus on myself. I know this will sound very strange but sometimes I tell my divorced friends that the ONE positive thing about divorce is that both the parents do get to have that restorative time alone on a regular bases. I don't want you to miss understand me, I am actually very against divorce, unless it is an abusive situation, but it is hard to be a parent. You are never ever a first priority. As people often say it is the hardest and most rewarding thing you will ever do....

Last night was a near tragedy. My DH was going to bring me home dinner, as I taught classes until 7:30. He was going to pick me up a Philly Cheese Steak, minus the bread and cheese, and I was so looking forward to it. And yesterday was an epic Exercise day for me so I really needed to eat. I had skied in the morning until my legs came to failure, than I taught a tough Pilates class, and then I did 30/30! I almost didn't do the Hiit workout, but than I thought of Shadowpup's trick, and so I just pretended I hadn't already skied today! It worked like magic!! I wrote a blog on SP about my sking as I broke through a major physical/mental block I had self imposed on myself. If you want to read more please read my blog!

So I come home and no DH and no Philly Cheese Steak either. Ok don't panic I tell myself, go upstairs and shower, so I won't go raid the pantry. So I take a shower and still no DH, so I get on line to occupy myself for awhile. Around 8:30 I begin to seriously bonk. So I decided to make myself some eggs. I scramble 3 whole eggs with full fat cheddar cheese and 4 pieces of real bacon. That was the closest thing I had at the house to P1......He ends up coming home at 10:30 with my dinner. He is helping out a friend of ours who owns the towns laundry mat, opening and closing it for him while he is out of town, and apparently one of the machines had exploded everywhere and it was a big mess. Ok so I let the snakes coming out of my head calm down a little, I tend to turn into Medusa when I get hungry like that, but really couldn't he have called so I could have cooked something for myself earlier? I could have made a better choice as I did have some P1 Black bean soup already made or I could have fixed myself a salad, but by the time I decided to cook I couldn't even think clearly mostly due to the snakes coming out of my head I guess!
