Lurker Invitations Check-In, January

Welcome soon not to be Lurkers,

Come on in, "get your toes wet" and enjoy. Talk about your workouts, eating, projects...whatever you want.

Today was my rest day, but I had a little energy to burn so, I used the treadmill for 10 min. and walked a little fast. It was a great warm up for a 15 min. stretch routine afterwards. It was boring, but at least I did what I wanted today.

I ate great today. Everything clean. Meaning fresh fruits, vegies, a boca burger, and hummus to dip the vegies into. Also some tunafish for lunch and a little WW pasta in a salad. I wrote all this in my food journal and it came to 1200 calories. It was a good day.

Anyone doing the STS series when it comes in the mail, or something else? My New Years Resolution is to get fit and healthy.

Will check in to see how everyone is doing later,

Janie

Good Mid Morning,

Today is my day for weight training. Will do Cathe's Total Body Sculpting twice.

So far I've eaten 1 c. Shredded Wheat and 1/2 c. of soy milk for breakfast.

Come on, get those toes wet!;)

I'll come by again later today to see how everyone is.

Hi! My name is Tracy. I live in Florida. I have been a huge cathe fan since the early 90's. I love reading the posts but rarely post(as you can see from my post count:) ) I used to be in really great shape until I got pregnant and gained an obscene (spelling ?) amount of weight. He will be 2 in march and I still have a bunch left to lose. So my resolution is to lose this weight, post more, and try to be a better person. So far this year I have been consistent with workouts and I plan on doing STS when I get it. My eating has been horrible and I really need to work on that.... I want to give the south beach diet a try. I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone!!

Hi Tracy,

Love your New Year resolution. Mine is just about the same too. I want to be better fit and more healthy. I love 2 year olds, they are so cute. One of my grandsons just turned 4, the others are 7 and another one at 13. That is also a great age to play with them. I have a bunch of weight to lose as you do so, we'll work it off and support each other. How does that sound? Congratulations on a job well done so far!:D I hear the South Beach Diet is a good one. For me, I'm eating clean (as fresh as I can) and counting calories, and of course doing weight training on opposite days of cardio.

Today I did Total Body Sculpting twice. OOOOOO that was a toughie, got all the way through it, but had to modify a little bit.

Good to see you here,

Janie

Janie,
Supporting each other sounds great! I have a great time with Tyler but lately he has been showing signs of the terrible twos yikes!!! I was hoping to miss all that he was such a sweet and good baby. Wow total body sculpt twice!! Great workout. I have yet to workout today I think Tyler is getting sick he has been clingy and would not stay with daddy wanted me. Usually my husband takes him so I can exercise but not today. Oh well hopefully tomorrow he will feel better and let me exercise! Have a great night!
Tracy

Ok, I'm here! As i mentioned on the other thread, i'm not really a lurker but i never posted on the check-in forum.

I started the day teaching yoga first thing this morning. This afternoon i did Drill Max for the first time. I did the Total Body premix and had a lot of fun. I look forward to using this workout more.

I'm really just at a point now where i'm trying to get my act together and commit to getting fit and healthy. I'm trying to break my pattern of sabotaging myself by overeating and yo-yoing with my workouts. I have a lot of work to do in order to reach my goals although my appearance is deceiving. I'm fairly tall (5ft9") so my weight gain is spread out and i still look slender in clothes. Underneath, i'm not really happy with what is going on. I need to lean out and tone up.

I'm trying to eat healthy and allow myself to eat treats without guilt. This week has gone well and i feel much better than last week when i binged on junk.

That's it for now!

Elle

Hi Janie and all,

Nice to have a "home" to check in! I live in northern Idaho, work in eastern washington, and do quite a bit of travel across the country for my job. Who would have thought scientists would travel so much??? I've been working out with Cathe for about a year now. Today's workout? 1RMs for STS, of course! I am finally attacking them.

Short story of life, from a fitness standpoint:
* years 1-39: one of those 'lucky' people who never gained an ounce, so ignored health (not a good idea)
* years 40-41: found lump (actually a good thing), became a cancer survivor (very good) but metabolism went to pieces (bad)
* years 42-45: ignored metabolism change (not smart), gained fifty pounds (oops), became disgusted about that (very good)
* years 46-47/now: lost the 50 pounds and then some via sparkpeople in a year (excellent!) put on some muscle (even better), acquired a growing dvd library, became interested ... almost rabid? ... in health/fitness (all good)

I ordered STS last spring, which I'm thinking I'd like to do as a six month rotation; and there are three kettlebells scattered about the house which I am slowly learning to use.

Oh yes, there are four horses out back, three dogs, two cats, one terrific husband, tanks of fish, and gardens. And about a dozen tons of snow!

I don't think this counts as lurking any longer :D

Janie, thank you for trying to give us lurkers a "safe" way to get more involved! I read the forums every day and post maybe once or twice a year.

After having moved to Germany (non-military) a few years ago, I haven't been keeping up with my exercise and have put on weight. DH and I are hoping to get pregnant this year and I've decided to clean up my diet and get back into exercising before we start trying to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Until I both lose some weight and get back into the exercise routine, I'm limiting how much Cathe cardio I do so I don't end up hurting my knees. I'd love to be part of a check-in to help with my accountability.

I'm planning on using rotating between Cathe, The Firm and Leslie Sansone for now, as well as counting calories and eating clean.

Ramona

Good morning,

Tracy, Dont' be too impressed with me, I used it as a beginners workout. I've been away from workouts lately cause of surgery. Everything is good now to exercise and it's tough getting back on track. Hope Tyler is feeling better (poor little guy).:( Were you able to work out yesterday? Two year olds are so inquisitive and showing their personalities more. It can be hard.

Elle, You are a Yoga teacher!:) I love yoga, but don't do it enough. Only once a week. I need to work it in twice a week. You amaze me with doing two workouts in one day. When I do two workouts (far and few between) it's once in the morning and then at night. I would kill to be your highth! (I'm 5' 5 1/2') Leaning out and toning is key. You'll get there now that you put your mind to it.

Shadowpup, A lot of my family live and work in East of the Mountains. They live in Yakima and the surrounding areas there. Are you in Spokane or there a bouts? What kind of Scientist are you? Does it have something to do with farming/agriculture? WOW! Would Coeur d' Alene be about where you live? I just adore that name and would love to visit there someday. You have had a lot going on with your young life. Has it been near or past the 5 year mark of the cancer? I'm so glad you are here with us. ;) Since my surgery and the OK from my doc to exercise, I've been rabid for fantastic health as well. OMG I love horses. Do you ride them? (of course you do). We have 5 acres in the woods, a garden, 2 cats and a very small dog the same size as the cats. My Joey is terrific too. Life is good. Congratulations on your weight loss, and you are now no longer a Lurker! Yehah!

Ramona, O my, what is it like to live in Germany? How long will you and hubby be there? There are so many places in Germany My Joey and I would love to visit. Are you taking advantage of that? If so, where have you visited? I think you are smart getting healthy before you get pregnant. So wise.:) Accountability is another reason why I'm here too. Your plan is very simular to mine. We'll all work together on it.

Thank you for coming to this thread, I know it's not easy sometimes to meet new people, you all are amazing. I think we have a great bunch of people here that can help one another. It's so nice to meet you all.

Lurkers who are reading this, know that you are welcome to join us.

Just wanted to post my cardio workout today:

Treadmill, 3.5 incline at 3.5 and 4.5 intervals for 20 min. Then a stretch.

It was tough!

Take care everyone,

Janie

Hi all,

Janie I was not able to workout yesterday and not today either. My baby is so sick he was throwing up all night. I think I got about 3 hours of sleep. Today I am wiped out and he just wants to be held. I am glad you are able to workout again and doing any workout (even beginners) is an accomplishment :)

Ramona I also have a bunch of weight to lose. I also want to get pregnant again but I don't want to be this weight. I gained so much the last time I almost got gestational(spelling?) diabetes. I don't want to have to worry about that again! Are you just planning on cleaning up your eating or are you going to follow a plan? I am going on the south beach diet. It worked really well for a parent of one of my students.

Elle I have been doing the same thing (yo-yoing exercise and eating junk) i would love to do yoga can you recommend a DVD I can do at home?

Shadowpup I kind of miss the snow(i live in florida) I grew up in Pittsburgh and I hated the cold still hate cold but I love snow! Congratulations on being a cancer!! That is wonderful! I also am thinking about doing STS for 6 months but I still have to finish my 1RM's!

Hello All,
It's 9:15pm here. I just finished a 1 hour yoga practice. I'm alternating Cathe workout days with yoga practice days. Both are important to me and right now with my schedule this is the only way i can fit both of them in. At one point i was trying to do both in one day, but it did not work out so well. This is manageable right now so that's my plan.

Tracy:
It's great that you want to start doing yoga. There are so many DVD's out there but I really like Yoga Mind & Body with Ali MacGraw. The instructor in it is actually Eric Shiffman who is her yoga teacher. I like this one because it is beautifully filmed. It may be a little difficult at first for a beginner but you won't grow out of this DVD. I also like the yoga TV series called Namaste. I have seasons 1 and 2 on DVD. Again it is beautifully filmed. Each episode is about 20 minutes. Rodney Yee is also a popular instructor. See if you can check out some clips online before you buy so you know what the feel of the DVD is like. To be truthful i don't really use DVD's very much for my personal practice. I do a more classical style of Hatha yoga on my own but DVD's and classes are a great way to get started. Let me know what you end up getting and update here when you get started!

Janie:
Thanks again for starting this check-in. It was very thoughtful of you to think that people might not be comfortable jumping into the existing check-ins. Maybe by the time January is done we can change the name since we will no longer be lurkers on the check-in and challenges forum!
I read about your surgery and some of the problems you had. You definitely went through quite an ordeal but i'm happy to hear you are excercising again. Cheers! to your continued success.

Keep up all the hard work and i'll check-in with you all tomorrow! :)

Elle

Hi all,

Hate to un-lurk and then hide again - but I am driving out tomorrow (Monday) midmorning, and can't always post when I'm away, so this may be the last for a few days ...

Tracy, So sorry you're dealing with a sick child - he sounds awfully cute, though. And Florida ... hmmm, sun, sure sounds nice right now. Thanks for the good wishes.

And Elle, on Germany - I was there this summer, in the southwest and in Frankfurt. Gorgeous! How do you like living there?

Ramona: nice to meet you! I can sure relate to feeling unhappy with what's under the clothing. Do you have a plan you're following? I used sparkpeople (www.sparkpeople.com). There's even a Cathe team there, by the way. I still count every calorie I eat ... that's gotten easier with time.

Janie: I'm headed closer to your family in the morning. I work in TriCities (the DOE national laboratory there), but live between Moscow and Troy, which is south of Couer d'Alene. That's a beautiful spot, and a lovely name, I agree. Snowy, though, snowier than we are! And that's saying something. For work, I'm actually on the technology side rather than Ag/Geo, despite where I live - a computer scientist, specializing in cyber security, and I head up our research group. I just love the outdoors and struck an arrangement with my employers that allows me to divide my time roughly in thirds between my home, TriCities, and on the road. Since you have five acres of your own, you know why I'd want to have space! I really love the peace, and enjoy the challenge of combining that with a technical field. It does present some challenges when it comes to working out.

And, thanks for asking - yep, I've passed that magic five year mark! Now I'm on once-yearly checkups, rather than several times a year. And very glad to be with you all still :D

Mostly I feed the horses, this time of year :D We do get out on some snowy days, but they are mostly vacationing in the barn right now. When it clears up, I'll be out there riding, that's for sure! I'll have to set up some pics of my four legged kids for you, since you're also a horse lover.

Well, best sign off ... oh yes, I was going to post my day! I'm now officially done with my four and five star 1RMs! Thank goodness. But, kind of neat, isn't it, to have a true "physical" physical? And, have to admit, after a week of eating clean, today I didn't! We had guests, I chose to indulge in a piece of cake WITH chocolate drizzled on it, plus barbecued ribs. Still, I was within my calorie range for the day, although admittedly the very high end. Steel cut oats in the morning and some extra cardio as well, I think.

Take care, fellow unlurkers, and I look forward to seeing you when I'm back, probably Friday night or Sat.

Good Evening,

Shadowpup, When you are away working, we'll be here when you get back. I do have relatives in the TriCities area. It's a small world, isn't it? I found this on the internet. Which one are you?

Typical approaches to improving computer security (in approximate order of strength) can include the following:

  • Physically limit access to computers to only those who will not compromise security.
  • Hardware mechanisms that impose rules on computer programs, thus avoiding depending on computer programs for computer security.
  • Operating system mechanisms that impose rules on programs to avoid trusting computer programs.
  • Programming strategies to make computer programs dependable and resist subversion.
Way over my head, but grateful for your knowledge. What do you do on the road as part of your work time? I would love pictures of the horses. Haven't ridden on a horse for years, but still love them. How can you not? I need to do those IRM's as well, Joey and I started and should be done in a couple of weeks or so. It will take awhile. Not sure when we will start them to have 3 months time all together. Probably in the Late Spring or Very Early Summer.

Elle, I love your yoga instructors suggestions, think I will get a couple too. A lot of the times I will do a yoga practice on my cardio days. I'm all warmed up and my body will be ready for the heavy stretches. After surgery for removing breast implants I had a lot of complications. I'm so grateful that it is mostly behind me now. The only thing I'm worried about now is the scare tissue in the other breast. It is very hard and uncomfortable. My doc says it should soften up. I'll wait about 5-6 months to see what happens, if it hurts I'll have the scare tissue removed, but if I can live with it, then I'll just leave it alone. Lost a nipple, but no biggy, I don't plan on anymore children since I'm way past that age now, so there is no use for it anyway. At least the silicone is gone out of my body which was making me very sick. By the way, the sickness is now gone since the implants have been removed and I had them for over 33 years. Yeah! What an ordeal that was indeed!

Tracy, O dear, please take care of your little boy, never mind exercising! Does he have the flu? I'm so proud of you for wanting to make changes for the better in your diet. We're here for you to vent, lean on...hope your little guy gets better very soon.

Ramona, how ya doing?

I wanted to ask you, some people will have a new thread everyday with the date at the end, instead of monthly. If we do it monthly it might get to be very long threads, but you only have to go to the last page and start posting again. What would you like to do?

Will talk with you all tomorrow. Have great workouts everyone.

Janie

Hi Everyone! I see we've had over 200 views, but only 14 posts. If there are any "lurkers" out there who are still not sure about whether or not to join in, there isn't a better time to get more active on the boards!

I've had a far busier day than anticipated - meaning I've been on the go since I got up, which is unusual for me. It's now shortly after 13:00 here and I wanted to check-in quickly. So far today, I've unfrozen a pipe to my washing machine so that I can get started on my laundry, done a 5 mile walk and made a lentil/barley soup almost from scratch (the legumes were in a bag and I added the vegetables & herbs) for lunch.

I'm still hoping to get in a weight workout this afternoon. Hopefully, it'll warm up enough that I can face going into my basement workout room. I used to live in NYC, which was colder than here, but we had central heat. Our primary source of heat here in Germany is our woodstove. We're lucky if our living room gets warmer than 63 F. BRRR! I've got lots of layers on, that's for sure!

Tracy, I sure hope your little boy is better! Taking care of him must be taking all of your energy, that's for sure. I signed up for WW on-line; my DH is on a diet to lower his cholesterol, so I'm hoping to be able to dovetail the two.

Elle, I'm 5'8", so I know what you mean about wearing your weight well. If I were to tell anyone how much I weighed, I think they'd be shocked because it's also fairly evenly distributed.

Janie, I admire you for having your implants removed. I'm sure it was a tough decision, and everything post-surgery (not just the recovery) and real adjustment.

Shadowpup, we'll see you when you get back!

So, I've had 6 oz low-fat yogurt w/1T of Grape-Nuts & 1/2 C berries for breakfast and 1 C of soup for lunch. Not sure about dinner yet. . .

Have a great day, everybody!

I would love to join a check-in. I have maybe posted twice in the short time I have been a member of cathe.com.
I am a 24 yr old, living in Minnesota. I have always been active, running track and cross country in High School, teaching aerobics in college, and working out to fitness videos. I have just recently started to get serious about weight traing. Don't get me wrong I am still a cardio junkie!

Anyway nice to meet everyone!

Oh, by the way my name is Tracy too!

Right now my rotation is as follows:

Mon: GS Chest and Tri's and Cardio
Tue: ME Lower Body and Cardio
Wed: GS Shoulders and Cardio
Thurs: GS Back and Bi's and Cardio
Fri: ME Lower Body and Cardio

Then I try to do something on the weekends, but lately that hasn't been happening :) oops.

So today I will be doing GS Chest and Tri's and then prob Imax 3, but that one is a toughie.

First Tracy: I hope your son get's better soon!

Ellie and Expatter: I am 5'8" too. Yeah some ppl would be shocked if they knew what I really weighed!

Have a great day to everyone~!

Tlstot Tracy,

Welcome aboard!

I'm impressed with your rotation for the week. That is a lot of cardio. I did that much cardio once to loose weight fast. I lost too much energy for me, so now I do cardio twice a week, sometimes if I have the energy, I'll do another one. My excuse is that I'm 54 and my bones won't put up with more than that. LOL!:D I think you deserve a rest on the weekends, you are working your body hard.:) How many people do you teach in your aerobic classes? How often do you teach aerobics in a weeks time? I've often wondered about that with instructors.

It's nice to meet you too Tracy (Tlstot),

Janie
4760884_bodyshot_175x233.gif

Hey Janie!

Oh, I don't teach aerobics anymore just back in the college days, so about 2 years ago. I taught anywhere from 3-5 classes a week, depending on the semester. My last semester it was 2 steps, 2 weight classes, and 1 spinning class.

Sometime's I wish I wasn't so obsessed with cardio! LOL... hopefully someday.

Nice to meet you too!

What a great idea! I have been lurking for quite a while but never wanted to interrrupt another check-in.

Janie, thanks for coming up with the idea. By the way, I LOVE your signature line:)

Tracey, I am also from Minnesota. I live in Duluth. Funny enough, I use to live in Idaho MANY years ago so it was fun to read the posts about the mountains. We lived in Plummer, ID - kind of by Coeur d' Alene. Whew! I haven't thought about that area in ages.

I started with Cathe about 12 years ago. I've always been an at-home-workout kinda girl. I have all of her strength videos. I've got two left feet so her cardio stuff just isn't for me. I did order STS and I'm really looking forward to starting it. I also ordered CLX and began that today. (workout vids are my one indulgence and I indulge BIG TIME)

So nice to meet all of you!
