Late Workouts

Dear Cathe and others:
For those who work out late, around 7-9 pm, do you eat before or after you workout? If you eat before you workout, how many hours do you wait between eating and working out?

If you eat afterwards, what do you eat?

I am running into a problem, because many say you should stop eating three fours before bedtime; but if i stopped eating at 4 pm so i can
work out at seven, after exercise I am ravenous.

Any guidance would be most appreciated.

Looking forward to the new workouts.

Love

Yvonne

I have worked out at 7 or 8 in the past. I would eat a meal at around 6 or earlier, and have a 'recovery drink" (a smoothie with about a 4-to-1 ratio of carbs to protein) right after the workout.

How long to wait between eating and working out depends on several things: what type of workout you are going to do (some workouts are more upsetting to digestion, I've found: like any work done prone on the stability ball or bouncy cardio) while others are less so (like standing moderate weight work); what you are eating (some foods, like smoothies are more digestible, while a heavier meal is less so); and your individual reaction (some people get 'queezy' more easily than others).

Hello, Yvonne,

I usually work out from seven to nine, and I don't believe in that "rule" that you shouldn't eat three hours before bedtime. A calorie is a calorie is a calorie, and you will lose weight if you take in fewer calories than you burn.

I always eat after my workout even if it is nine-thirty in the evening, and I would feel very sick if I didn't. Not only do I maintain my current weight, but I can lose weight if I put my mind to it. I will usually have some protein, fruit, veggies and a small serving of a carb. Sometimes, I even have a bowl of shredded wheat with skim milk and a slice of fruit.

I hope this helps.

Hi Yvonne! I love to fix supper for my husband and also eat with him. We eat around 6:30 - 7:00. After I do the dishes and walk my dog, I work out. Depending on what I ate and how much as to which workout I do. If I want to use say IMAX 3, I'll eat "very" light and then have fruit or 1/2 peanut butter/honey sandwich on whole wheat. I agree with a calorie is a calorie no matter when it is eaten. Sometimes if my husband is going to be late, I'll workout, then fix supper which puts eating at around 8:30-9:00 and so farx( I haven't put on weight due to that. Hope this helps!!!

I am the queen at working out late! I eat between 6 and 7 most nights adn usually wait about 3 hours before working out just because I normally overeat at supper! So I will start my work out between 10 and 11. And then I do usually eat afterwards, and it the hay around 1am or 2 am. I could probably do without the snack after, but i just cannot break the habit. But I can't work out unless its been at least 2 or 3 hours since I ate.

I am glad you all posted this. I am at-stay-home mom right now, but next year I am planning to go back to work after my youngest starts going to preschool.

I workout in the mornings. But when is start working, it will probably be after six before I get home. Cooking dinner and stuff will bring my workout probably to 7:30 if not 8:00pm. YIKES!

I guess I will have to eat after the workout so I don't get sick.
