I ran 20 miles yesterday!!

Just had to share my excitement with my fellow fitness enthusiasts :).

I'm in the home stretch (3 weeks left!!) of training for my first full marathon (I don't care if I've done 7 half-marathons, it's a BIG jump to do a full LOL!), and yesterday was the biggest day of my training--the "dreaded" 20-miler, after which we are officially in taper and we'll be decreasing our mileage significantly until our actual event. 3 weeks from today, eek!

Anyway, I had been dreading this 20-miler all season. After 4 seasons with Team in Training and watching the full marathoners go up, up, up in mileage, while the highest mileage I'd ever had to run until this year was 12 miles, I often thought to myself, "Boy, I'm so glad I'm only doing a half--I could never last 20 miles!" Well, guess what? I DID IT!! And not only did I do it, I FELT FANTASTIC! So fantastic that I sprinted-literally sprinted--the last 1/4 mile of the run. I couldn't believe it.

I'm still on a high (and surprisingly, not that sore, although I will be doing yoga in a few min just to make sure I get those stretches in), and I can't believe that I did what I always said I couldn't do. Now granted, in the real thing, I'd have to run 6 more, but I'm taking it a day at a time and I just know on the actual race day, all of the thousands of people I'll be running with--and more importantly, the honorees we have on the team, the real-life heroes who have beaten and/or are still battling cancer--will give me inspiration and motivation when I need it the most to push through those last few miles.

So excited!!

Ya got what it takes, Kiddo! We'll look forward to your post that says "I ran 26 miles yesterday - and felt fantastic!!!"

Wow!

Congrats!! and good job!!! That's one the things I've always wanted to do. My mind gets the best of me and I don't do it. Fear---blech! Good job and best of luck on the race!

JenniferMaria - if I ran 20 miles (or 20 yards) I'd hope to be alive - feeling fantastic would be a bit of a stretch. (Serious Un-Runner talking here.)

Your own goal puts mine - to pass my driver's license road test (flunked it the first time, then our car was rear-ended and is now in The Buick Hospital for about another week) in the deep shade.

Keep up the good work! You will do it!

Jennifer,

Congrats on reaching a new milestone in training! I can relate to your experience as I, too, am training for my first mary (Oct. 12) and recently conquered 20 and 21 miles. Best of luck to you on marathon day!

Let's stay healthy & have fun!

P.S. Love your signature line.

Holy Moly ! I always envy you ladies doing the long distances. I have only ventured as far as 8 or 9 miles and thought that was tough.

Congratulations and I think the best part of reading your post was that you thought it would be too difficult. So good to see you pushed yourself and it was a GREAT run !

Will be waiting with A-Jock to hear how the 26 goes !;)

Congrats Jennifer!! It is so great to have a good 20 miler before your 1st marathon!! I hope you have an awesome 1st marathon experience and post how your 26.2 went...:D

Thank you soooo much, everyone! Reading your posts of encouragement and congrats is making me smile--and giving me a big boost as I head into the final stretch.

Lots of hugs to everyone!

Cathy: which marathon are you doing? Best of luck, too!! I can't wait to see your post about it, since it'll be a week before mine :)

GOOD LUCK!!!

The last 6 just fly by...you'll be so pumped!!! Sounds like you're more than prepared-rooting for you from Iowa!!!
julie :)

Congrats!!

I remember my 20 miler while training for my marathon and I did NOT feel like sprinting to the finish!! Great job and enjoy the taper!!

Congratulations!
I just finished a marathon this morning and let me tell you, if you can do 20, you can do 26.2.
Enjoy the taper!
