Getting Our Licks In!

Started the 3rd week of meso 3. I did my all time best yesterday with 82 pound bench press and today 100 pound squat! I did a sillly thing with front squats. My weight was suppose to be 62 pounds. That was what I thought I did but was wondering why it felt so difficult. Could be the 20 pound vest I had on!?? LOL! Yep 82 pound front squats which was very challenging to say the least. I found the 100 pound squats with barbell on back/shoulders less challenging because the balance is so different. Must remember NOT to wear the vest next time. ROFL!

My Mom and Dad went to my green belt graduation. It meant the world to me, even at the age of 45, I want my parents approval and admiration. They were intrigued by it all. And now I am an "intermediate" student. New schedule and new adventures. Oh boy! Also coming up is the tournament next weekend. Should be a great learning experience.

Sister cracks me up with her leaf removal! She has such a little yard and few trees. Unlike myself, which I refuse to tackle until most of them come down. And its not even close to 50% yet, in my neck of the woods.

Happy Halloween everybody!

~Renee

Well Halloween was so much fun, the girls REALLY enjoyed themselves. I think there is only one or two more Halloween's left that I will be a part of, if I am lucky, and then they will be into their own gig's....Ah well must enjoy every second I can then, right? Or maybe I will be lucky to have a daughter like Renee and they will still let me be a part of their lives no matter what their age....

Saturday I dropped the girls and the puppy off with the in-laws and went to the South Boulder Rec. center and did Cardio Coach and then Meso Cycle 3 Week one on the squat rack. My knee flared up afterwards, I think the combination was to much for it still, but I iced it and the swelling went back down.

Yesterday was off

Tonight is Pilates & Ski Conditioning!

I agree with Laura -Halloween was fun!!! I did a whole bunch of Halloween discount shopping and bought some really great stuff. It was almost as exciting as buying workout videos!! ;):D I'm stocked up with MORE Halloween items that got to share in the last few moments of the holiday this year before I put everything away tonight. I gave out candy at my Mom's house (no one comes to mine! :() and that was fun - love doing that - the neighborhood seems so festive and fun.

When I got home I gave DH his treat to make it a little more fun for him - and then lit all of my candles - in all our carved pumpkins - and every decoration that took a candle - to make it all festive. DH wasn't appreciative which kind of annoyed me - I guess I am really doing all this for me - but I sort of wish he got into it a little bit. Oh well. (big sigh) I love Halloween. It seemed to fly by this year - and although my decorations were up in September - doesn't seem like it is long enough.

On Saturday - we had spent the day taking out the boat (thank God that is over!) and taking out the cannas (actually have more to do there). When it gets cold like this there is so much to do to prepare for winter. We have another day of work ahead of us as well. We went to a little get together with the neighbors and we were out quite late. That was a great time though - had tons of fun.

Tonight I'm not sure what I'll be doing - will let you know tomorrow.

Brrrr! It's cold this morning (-2°C). I took yesterday off as a lieu day and didn't want to come back to work today.:( In addition to my yoga, my beginners classes are giving me more practice this week since i'm teaching them the headstand.

Hallowe'en was pretty uneventful. Since i live in a condo now, kids don't come trick-or-treating. The condo committee had a party for the kids on Saturday.

Instead of candy, I gave out stickers to my kids yoga class. I went over to a sticker warehouse that has every kind of sticker you could imagine and picked up a load of them. I also got a bunch for my nephews who i will be seeing this weekend along with these rubberband bracelet things (krazy bandz?) they are into these days.

The kids were happy with their "sticker treats" and they seem to be liking the class. When it was time for final relaxation they didn't want the class to end so that's a good sign!

I went to the bookstore and picked up some new books:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Hobbit (which i read back in grade 8 i think)
Unbearable Lightness

I'm starting with Unbearable Lightness which just came out yesterday. It's Portia de Rossi's book about her struggle with anorexia. I bought the book and coincidentally she was on Oprah yesterday to promote the book.

Shoegal: Your place must have been beautiful with all of the candles lit up! Now you need to get in gear for Christmas decorating!;)

Renee: Congrats on earning your green belt! Hope you are feeling all better now.

Laura: Misty sounds like she's fitting in well. Take care of that knee so you son't have any long term problems with it.

Michelle: Have a great trip to the Big Easy!

Janie: Haven't done the Firm in forever! How retro of you!

Yesterday I went to my first "intermediate" karate class. Yep, let's just say its a wee bit more intense. Worked on kicks, good form, stretching, more kicks, skipping with a side kick, jump kicks, more strecthing. 45 minutes of non-stop intensity. I liked it...a lot.

Today, school is closed, since most of our schools are used for polling precincts. How wonderful! So, I worked on some karate, and did todays Cathe, and tomorrows Cathe. Yep, two + full hours of Cathe. MMA:Fusion and STS 33, shoulders, bi's and tri's. Tomorrow I may just "sleep in" instead of getting up at 4:15, 5:00 or 5:15 might do! LOL Long day tomorrow, so I figured, I had the time and energy to do two workouts. Its not the first time, nor will it be the last.

Elle, I wish I had the energy to read. I used to LOVE to read, read, read, all the time. Now, not so much. It's not that I don't enjoy it, its just that I get diverted so easy, and can't sit still. Always moving, or so it seems.

I was a party pooper on Halloween. Didn't buy candy, turned out the lights and "hid" in the depths of my house during "trick-or-treat" time. Not into it this year. I did enjoy the Halloween parade at school. The kids were adorable in their costumes. As for the neighborhood...eh, I am sure the children in my neighborhood did well on candy. Just not any from me this year.

Tournament in 4 days!

~Renee

Walked Rolly in this glorious sunny crisp day, about 45 min.

Michelle, Great job on raking those leaves, I'd say it was a work day for sure. And STS chest and back. Hope you enjoy New Orleans. Well, how could you not?

Laura, Do enjoy your children when they are young. Time passes by so quickly. Don't worry, they will be a part of your life forever. Great job on CC and meso cycle 3 with the squat rack. Isn't that cool? Ah, I hope your knee will continue to get better. It sounds like it will. Keep that ice on it when it flares.;) How was Pilates and Ski Conditioning?

Shoegal, You are wise to purchase Halloween specials.;) If the decorations seem to be unappreciated, it's OK, you love it, and that is good. You are worth it. Glad to see you both enjoying your neighbors.

Elle, Beginners do head stands? I did 't know that. I just saw the interview with Portia on Oprah. I think you have some great reads there. Enjoy them.

Renee, Good luck with your Tournament. Let us know how it goes. Graduations must have been a great day for you. Welcome to Intermediate Karate. 2 hours of Cathe? I'm impressed.

Have a really nice day everyone,

Janie

I've been trying to post for 2 days and haven't been able to get the whole thing out before something comes up. So - anyway - on Monday I did 4DS: LIS. Lots of fun on that step - just not as hard as I wanted but I really love doing just 30 minutes of it and moving onto the weight work - shoulders, calves and abs this time. One complaint - and I have complained before but I will again: After the first step combination - Cathe does a little blast and it is that gliding move where you sort of skip to the side - and then she does it around the step. I don't find this intense and I feel like an idiot doing it - I just hate that move. I want to fast forward through this lunacy and move on!!! Venting over.

Last night I did 4DS: BC!! Fun - got more out of it than I usually do. So tonight - I will do 4DS: HIS - so I have a little rotation going on.

Took most of Halloween down - :(:(:( - and will put out my Thanksgiving decor :D:D:D - but I just don't have quite as much as Halloween or Christmas - but enough so that it still looks pretty festive. Well - and it also gives me an excuse to go buy more.:p:eek:

Renee - next time you don't want to give out on Halloween - give me a call - I will come with a big bowl of candy and give it out. I'm bummed because I live too far out for a kid to come. Even the neighbors who live relatively close don't come back there!!! Congratulations on your green belt and your intermediate classes and 2 full hours of Cathe!!! Are you gearing up for your tournament?

Elle - I had to convert your celsius to fahrenheit to realize how cold it is there. Cold here too - about the same - just getting colder!!! Brrr is right!!! I think stickers are fun - I wouldn't mind getting those!! There is something about a sticker?? - not sure what makes them fun - but they are!

Janie - enjoy those walks before you can't anymore - my goodness time just goes by so quickly!!!

Michelle is in New Orleans?? Hello out there - and to Laura & Shadowpup. I am going to post this before something happens and I can't.

Slow here at the check in . . . . (hello? :D anybody?) They changed my system here at work - it is faster and oh soooooo different (I HATE CHANGE!!!) but I am getting used to it.

Last night - 4DS: HIS!!! This is what I remember - fun, snappy little step routine, a little more complicated- love it, love it, love it!! Then worked on back and chest - still fun. I'm definitely getting my strength back - push ups are easier (not easy - just easier). Tonight - 4DS:Kickbox - except I'm NOT doing the kickbox portion - will substitute something else in there - I just can't put myself through it. But will do legs!

I went online and bought more garden flags - I was probably overly concerned that Christmas would come and I wouldn't have a garden flat to correspond! As it is I am quite embarrassed that my Halloween garden flag is still out there and Jodi (the lady who lets the pups out during the day) would see that it's been days and days since Halloween and I'm a slacker. The Jack O Lanterns haven't been removed either.:eek::eek::eek: Nothing like rotting pumpkins say to Happy Thanksgiving!! I've been too busy to make DH deal with it - and then it would be a battle with him to make it happen. I'll make sure tonight that they aren't at least outside the front door.

Ok -hope everyone is happy & healthy where ever you may be!!

I truly thought that I posted yesterday, but I didn't. Hmmmmmm. Walked Rolly this morning was able to sneak around dogs today (I think I've been lucky and catching it just right). I'm still very frightened of them. Once we face each other, then will see how it goes.

Went to the doctor to see about thingies on my face. One of them was precancerous and the other two were just things. She froze them off. Will see her again in January to see how they are doing along with a pap smear and a mammogram. I like to get all that stuff done early in the year..

Shoegal, It has been quite here. Hmmmmmm. Great job on 4DS and HIS, LIS and BC (the last few days), excellent workouts.

I like leaving decorations out too. But once they are all packed away, can work on the next big Holiday. What kinds of things will you be buying for Thanksgiving, any ideas?

The step thing you dislike, just do something else, there is nowhere that is written saying you have to do it. Just enjoy doing something else and after it's over continue on with the workout as is. Be happy doing exercises, I think that is so important.

I know what you mean by time flying by. Thanksgiving is next already!

Hope everyone will come back and join in. We all need each other. I know how life can be busy. See you all soon.

Janie

Janie, you have nothing to fear but fear itself. Don't let them know you are afraid, maintain the alpha dog persona. It will be alright. ;)

I finished up week 3 of meso 3. One week to go! Yippy! As much as I enjoy meso 3, I will be glad to take a break from STS. Will probably do it again in the new year. I love the gains, thou it takes a lot out of me.

Two days, then karate tournament. Tonight is my last practice with others in my karate school. I had some time today at school to break boards, so the gym teacher was nice enough to hold them for me. I did okay, but really need a good board holder who won't back up or is not locked out (arms/shoulders). I only get two tries with each technique. I'm doing a reverse punch and 4 different kicks for the torurnament. Hopefully I'll do okay.

I can't believe there are only 2 more weeks before Thanksgiving break. Good golly, time sure does fly this time of year. Busy, busy, busy.

Have a good day, everybody!

~Renee~

Hi ladies!!

Time is getting the best of me this year!! Finding it hard to keep up!

Tuesday was my beginner Pilates class & didn't have time for anything else. I had a lovely evening with some girlfriends for all you can eat sushi!! Yum! Now it is time to be extra diligent until Thanksgiving!

Wed I took off.

Thursday (today). I did cardio coach on the elliptical & Meso 2 Week 1 Back & Biceps.

Shoegal; wish I could see your decorations! I have book club at my house this Sunday so I have decided to keep up the Halloween decorations until after that! I have also decided not to decorate for Thanksgiving as we are going out of town and just don't have it in me to put them up and take them down!! Saving my energy for Christmas good job on 4DS love it too!

Elle: Hmmmmm headstands do seem advanced to me!! You must be one tough cookie!! Stay warm, we are having a beautiful warm and dry spell I have been wearing tank tops & shorts.... Figure I better enjoy it while I can

Janey; sorry those dogs Are still an issue for you!! Hang in there and enjoy the good walks while you can

Catchick: best wishes to you on your tournament! Poor gum teacher, you probably terrified him!! He couldn't help to cower!

Joey and I did TBS using heavy weight.

I did it! At least I petted two dogs and gave them treats, or was that the other way around. I even held Rolly for one dog, I didn't let it get tooooo close to Rolly yet. Still can't walk with Rolly, because I don't know what they will do to him yet. We'll take it slow and easy. When I gave the Mastiff a treat, (my was he slobbery, slime was just running down to the ground) and as I was walking away, he growled and barked. (I could just imagine him biting me, he was so darned close) Was that because he wanted more, do you suppose? He followed me to my door. Oh, you guys, my hair was on end, but I didn't show fear. Have to tell you, when I got in the house I was so shaken, and my heart was beating so fast. But, I didn't show that part to the dogs. The second dog I like, she seems old and as nervous as I was, but there was something about her. The third dog kept at a distance, he wasn't going to have any part of it, except barking as loud as he could. WHEW! I did it and it's a start.

Maybe later I can take Rolly out for a walk when they aren't there. Not ready to do that yet with these dogs. Rolly safety first.

Renee, Trying to get acquainted with the dogs, was alright, like you said, I made sure they didn't know I was scared half to death.

I love doing STS too, but Joey will do it if he must. Next year it will be a must. Great job it by the way, you are almost done with Meso 3. Good for you.

Have fun and good luck in your Karate Tournaments. Must have details please.;)

Laura, I agree, the days are numbered on how many days we can go walking. I will take advantage of it.

Great job on your Pilates class and CC on the elliptical and Meso 2 week 1.

It's always nice to be with girlfriends. They are the best, aren't they?

Have a great weekend everyone,

Janie

Wow--I finally made my way back. I went without getting on the internet for 3 days while I was in New Orleans. The work days were too busy and long and the hotel charged too much to get on the internet. My company will reimburse for the charge, but I was just too tired to go online. Took half a day on Thursday to get through my work emails and respond to everything that needed a response. No travel for the rest of the month. Thank goodness.

I did do STS disc 25, chest and back, on Monday before leaving for NOLA. Did double wave pyramid on Tuesday and skipped exercise on Wednesday. Back home Wednesday night--walked Ripken in the rain Thursday morning and loved every wet moment. Then I did STS disc 37, Squat Rack, week 1. My back is not hurting as much but I am watching how much I load on my weights for the back and leg exercises. Today, after Ripken and I walked, I did STS disc 27, shoulders, biceps, and triceps. Okay--so remember my right elbow has been bothering me for months. Well, that elbow is fine but now it's my left elbow. Go figure. And I have the most trouble with it on lateral raises and rear delt flies. So, I lower the weights on my left arm and keep on going.

Was on base at Quantico today attending a meeting. Had to leave by noon because part of the 2nd deck in the building I was in was infested with bed bugs. I don't find that too surprising since our Marines are coming and going from 3rd world countries all the time. Anyway, everyone had to leave so the environmental folks could bring in the bed bug sniffing dogs to determine how many areas/floors were infected and then they were going to fumigate. Spent the rest of the day working at home. We will head over to the boat tomorrow. It's the beginning of the big pack up for the season: any remaining summer clothes, food, pool towels.

Sister: you can laugh at me and my leaves. I'm not raking again until the rest come down and we are almost there. The teenager who cuts the grass will get alot of what is left when he does the last cut for the season. GO HOKIES! Did you watch any of the game? I made it to half-time. Joe watched the whole thing.

Janie: bull mastiffs are slobbery dogs. That's just the breed. Kind of reminds you of the big dog that was guarding the trap door to the Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets movie or was that the Sorcerer's Stone? Do the dogs always bark at you? Some dogs are just barkers--not sure why. When Ripken and I walk, it is usually the little dogs that bark at us--although there is one big one, but he is in a fenced area. Come to think of it, he might be a bull mastiff.

Laura: Yes, pretty soon your girls will start sprouting those serious independence wings. Hopefully, you have more than a couple of years before that happens.

Shoegal: you know, I think of you every time I do 4DS-LIS because I know you don't like that side skipping/box move. It does seem a little goofy. Don't feel too miffed that your DH didn't appreciate the Halloween decorations. Men just don't. We had a good batch of trick or treaters this year. My favorite group of kids were dressed up in Wizard of Oz costumes; even the mom was dressed up as the good witch.

Elle: it's been a long time since I've done a headstand. Wonder if I could still do one? Wonder if I really want to.

DH has declared that tonight is an "eat out" night. I did pretty good in NOLA. Didn't overeat at all. I'm into that time of year where I really watch what I eat--trying to counterbalance the holidays. The leftover holloween candy will go to the office next week. Hope everyone has a lovely evening.

slowly but surely getting back into the swings of things... exercising more and more...sticking with the elliptical for now for cardio though...I am really looking forward to some step, HIIT, and KB.

Today I did Cardio Coach and Meso Cycle 3 Week 3 Squat Rack at the North Boulder Rec///

want to do personals but my computer is about to die as Misty chewed through my cord.... and want to make sure it posts

Hello all! I'm finally able to do personal things on the computer again! At least for short periods ...

Let me bring you up to speed. It's been my turn to have a back injury. That slip I took earlier in October - don't know if I posted about it or not - well, actually it was quite a long fall down a very steep embankment. It flared up very badly when I mistreated it entirely. In my own defense, I first had a program that nearly ended up on the chopping block, and had to spend every second working to ensure that didn't happen. After the review of my program, my grandmother died ... the upshot being that I realized two weeks had gone by and I'd maxed out on ibuprofen, which wasn't enough to let me sleep through the night any longer. And I never take medications, but the work/personal. Stopping the ibuprofen to see what it was masking literally left me in spasms on the ground. Husband insisted on seeing a doctor; I was actually happy to go for a change. Doctor took xrays, felt the puffy swelling, and officially banned me from flying anywhere, riding in the car for more than an hour, or even sitting at a computer/desk for an hour. Regular icing, lots of muscle relaxants, and pain meds. For SIX WEEKS (though I think that is going to be more than I need).

I've just completed about two and a half weeks of that, and am doing much better. The pain meds, I'm not taking any more - Janie, I kept remembering Sid, and how I'd forgotten how much ibuprofen I was taking, and was frankly too scared to take them for more than a few days. I've tapered off the muscle relaxants too. Every other day one pill, not three a day. Perhaps no pills this weekend. On everything else I'm behaving, more or less, which is why you haven't seen me posting here. I needed to save my computer time for work. We *also* had the elections to deal with, though fortunately I didn't have much to do related to those.

On the plus side, I did save my program and in fact it came through the review with flying colors - we are being held up as a model for others who are also undergoing a zero base review (!!!!). Well, considering I dropped nearly everything to put together our plan/alliances/etc, it's a good thing. Also managed to do a "Silver Bullet" podcast interview, though the pain meds made me feel duller than usual (it is here if you are interested: http://seclists.org/securecoding/2010/q4/30 ). And, the 20K outdoor bulbs are all planted. I have 1K more to do of potted bulbs this year, but I can do those any time. Probably will finish that off this weekend. Good thing, we are expecting snow tomorrow.

Losing my grandmother was tough. She was 96, and truly she was ready to go - but I miss her. She and I were very close, and each weekend we would speak on the phone. Her memory was going yet she knew me, and just tended to forget things that were recent. We focused on old times and that was fine. My dad is doing well, still grieving; it is hardest on him. He'd been taking care of grandma daily since February, when she started on dementia medication, and had been spending two-three days a week with her for a year and a half before that to make sure she was well. I spent about a week with family before and after the funeral. It was indeed fortunate that I'd been about to board a plane for work, or there would have been no room on the plane. My work travel outfit worked with the Alaska ticket people and switched the reservations over to my personal account. For once it really helped to be a Gold traveller!

I can see much has gone here and I do apologize for disappearing on you without a word. This was a time I needed to focus on my program, my family, and my health - in a way, it has helped me to look at each of these aspects of life one at a time, and begin to rebalance my priorities. This is my first day to do anything personal besides the bulbs, so please take that as part of my apology for appearing to ignore my online cathe friends. It isn't that I didn't care and I am back as quickly as I could. You are high on my list.

Taking it easy today, will walk Rolly when there is a break between rains.

Michelle, So glad you are safe and sound and at home. I missed you! It sounds like you were immensely busy. Were you able to enjoy New Orleans at all? It also sounds like you did a great job on your exercises while you were gone. Good for you. I wonder what's up with your elbows? If you figure it out, let us know.

While you are visiting your boat and collecting things off it, try to enjoy that environment if you can. It sounds so beautiful there this time of year.

Eewwweeee, bed bugs! Glad it's taken care of with the fumigation. I don't know how the 3rd world countries can stand it.

I bet Ripken missed you and his walks. I see you are doing STS, and a good job on that as well. You are doing the right thing about what your body needs for back care. Proud of ya.

Yes, the dogs always bark at me, maybe because in the past I would tell them to go home and swish my arms towards their house, and shoo them. Mind you, I was very close to the door if I needed to escape quickly.

LOL! When the Mastiff saw I had treats, he immediately drooled and shook his body and you could see the slime going every which way. Yuck!

Enjoy your dinner out tonight.

Laura, So glad you are doing much better. Isn't it wonderful? Great job on CC and Meso 3 wk. 3 using the squat rack. Fun! Tell Misty, to go chew her own stuff. ;) We need you here.

Deborah, I was just about ready to send you a pm. Was getting worried about you. Understand though that you can't use the computer for more than an hour, and work has to come first. Also understand that we matter to you. That's awesome. You matter to us too, a great deal. No apologizes are necessary, we all have things in our life that's gets (not a good word for it, but) hectic comes to mind, and priorities needs to be rearranged.

Oh dear, a back injury (I remember you saying you slipped) seems to take a long time to heal. Do be patient with that, because if you don't you will have to start the process all over again. I too, (because of my son-in-law) will only take medicine for a very very short time, if at all. You are wise to do that. For some reason, doctors give us way to many pills.

I was close to my grandma too, so when she died it was very upsetting to me as well. The only comfort I can give you, is I know what you are going through and you are not alone with the lost feelings. It isn't easy by any means and it will take time, as you already know. Try to remember the pleasant things about her, cry, miss her, sob, laugh...continue on. (((((HUGS))))).

I checked out the Silver Bullit Interview. Very impressive!

Bulbs: How do you get things done, I just don't know. I can't wait to see more pictures this Spring of your bulbs again.

Snow already! Where does the time go? It is suppose to be very snowy here in our neck of the wood sometime this year, so if we do get snow, I usually make snowmen, cause it dosen't happen that often.

Take care everyone and enjoy the weekend,

Janie

Welcome back Shadowpup. We were missing you something terrible and I do remember that you posted back in October about your back. I have to admit that I was wondering how you were managing to keep up your hectic work schedule when it sounded like you had done a pretty good job on your back. I am happy to hear that you are healing well, but very sorry about your grandmother. 96 years is a great age and it sounds like she was doing pretty good until this year. Great big (((((HUGS))))) to you. Was this the grandmother that you did all the push-ups for? Please continue to take it easy; be good to yourself and your body.

Janie: I am taking a break today as well. We came over to the boat and are going to be packing up alot of stuff this weekend and hauling it back home for the winter months.

Well, DH is running the engines--just checking things out. Ripken is a little freaked out because he thinks we should be pulling out of the slip but I'm not doing the "normal" routine for going for a boat ride. It's actually a bit too nippy for a boat ride although I am sure some fisherman are out there today. Brrr.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.
Michelle

We have a beautiful clear, sunny, blue sky here at the marina. However, we also have a brisk wind out of the north, so it's a wee nippy. Not too nippy for my little Rippy though. He just wanted to walk and walk and walk this morning. He is definitely loving his walkabouts these days. Did stretch max this morning before football time, and now we are just hanging out watching the Ravens/Dolphins game. Pretty good game so far. The Redskins have a by-week today--so we are not in a rush to leave. I'll pack a little bit more up to take home this weekend. Not sure how many weekends we have left before we have the boat winterized--one, maybe two.

Hope everyone is doing well.
