Getting Our Licks In!

Must be something in the air. Sister did Cardio Core Circuit yesterday and that's what I did this morning! Right after Ripken and I had our walk. No jacket today--a little warmer, no breeze, still very nice. I think Cardio Core Circuit is one of Cathe's harder cardios. No equipment, but who needs equipment when you've got Cathe? By the end my legs are trembling, the sweat is flying off my hair, and my heart is pounding. I'm headed south to Norht Carolina for a few days on a business trip so I've got MMA Kickbox and Travel Fit in my bag. Threw my weight gloves in the bag too just in case someone else in my crew wants to hit the base gym and lift weights.

Janie: are you going to follow the STS/shock cardio rotation while you are doing STS or are you doing your own thing on the cardio days? How far to the dentist and back? Do you throw in some shopping and eating out too?

Sister: school sounds good. Spotsy went back yesterday--can you believe it? I think last winter finally pushed them over the edge and they decided to start earlier rather than wait until after Labor Day. Stafford, of course, goes back the day after Labor Day and then everyone will be complaining when they get out of school at the end of June next year. Some things never change. Glad the new schedule is working for you so far. When do you start after school piano lessons?

Hi to Shoegal, Elle, Laura, and Shadowpup.

STS Disc 2, Back and Triceps: was Hard! I did what I could. Whew! Also did 40/20 and Walked Rolly at 3.5 mph for 30 min. Burned 725! WOW! Well, I had to make up for yesterday. Tomorrow will be less workouts.

Michelle, Great job on CCC. Not easy for sure. Ha, your sister did them too? You both are on the same wave length for sure. LOL:) I am following Cathe's STS Strength and Cardio Rotation. The dentist is about 90 miles one way. We stopped at Costo, but that was it. I needed to get home, it was so darn hot out.

Have a good evening,

Janie

Hi all,

I'm running late again, so this is a short post ... but it is fun to check in even if it is just briefly!

Yesterday I put my new squat rack together, and used them today. These are the Valors, and they seem to be very sturdy. I'm still practicing getting in/out of the rack, so I limited myself to 64 pounds. That's light enough I don't need the rack to get them off my back in case of problems :) However, it meant doing about a bazillion squats to get a good Legs workout! Next time I'll go with a heavier weight and see how that feels, though I don't believe I'll push the heavy end of the envelope quite yet.

Janie, you started STS again - congratulations! That Meso 1 is tough. Great job on doing your best. Sounds like you're really pushing yourself and that's a good thing :)

Michelle, good luck on your travels! Sounds like an interesting trip, and you've got some tough workouts along. Haven't ever been in a base gym, but I bet it's pretty good!

Hi to everyone else ... I need to catch up on posts to see what you're doing!

Hi Ladies -

I will be having house guests this weekend - friends will be staying over for a night - my goodness it is stressful!! I want everything to be clean and perfect - even the garden. Every night I try to tidy up another part of the house and then I go into the yard to tidy up the garden - I feel like I'll be judged on how I keep house. I need to calm down.:p There hasn't been any time on the weekends to do my normal housework. Rex has been out of town all week too so he is no help. He does a couple of dishes and he thinks he's done so much.

On Tuesday I chose not to work out - I actually started to do Push/Pull but could feel it in my back - and thought - I keep pushing it and pushing it - wanting to get the workout in - but a day of rest will help more than a workout right now. Last night - I felt great and went back & did Push Pull - really enjoyed a good Cathe Strength workout. It has been awhile for me but I just love her. Although I feel this is an easier (and shorter) strength workout -it was a great place for me to step back into it. I love a total body workout too. I'm icing my back right now and plan to stretch it today in an effort to keep it healthy.

Michelle - we've been having just nice, cool weather here - everyone is loving it - bet Ripken is loving his walks right now. Enjoy NC and have a safe trip.

Shadowpup- It is fun & exciting to get new equipment - those squat racks must be something - you should try them out with the STS squat rack routines!!

Janie - way to go on STS - doing what you can will make you stronger. Did you redo your 1RM or are you using your old ones as a guideline??

Renee - school sounds great actually - fun to see those eager young faces so willing to learn. Oh my 4:30 am to exercise - I give you credit. I have worked out in the evening for years - and although I like the thought of getting it out of the way early - I think this works better for me.

Hello to Elle & Laura!!!

We have Chasie (5 year old grandson) with us tonight. I put him to bed and he came out while I was doing MMA Boxing. Needless to say, I didn't finish it. Poor little guy, he missed his MaMa tonight, so I loved him and played on the computer until he was tired enough to go to sleep. That means double workouts for me tomorrow, Disc 3 and MMA Boxing, or I can do MMA Boxing on Sat. Then Saturday noonish, Monique (another daughter) will visit and walk her dog along with Rolly and me. Should be fun.

Debroah, How exciting to have a new squat rack. You are wise to go slow and easy. Proud of ya.

Shoegal, I know what you mean about being judged on house or garden. I so exactly what you do. It is nerve racking! Why do we do that? Glad you were able to do P&P last night and enjoyed it.

You made the right choice if your back was a little unsteady by opting not to do the workout. Listening to your body is number one.

I didn't redo the 1RM. I'm using the old ones as a guideline and it's working out great.

Have a good one everyone,

Janie

Morning all!

Shoegal, love those pictures of your niece! What a cute baby :D Congratulations on another successful rescue. Gunnar has a big smile ... you've helped him move from such a potentially sad life to being a very happy boy for years to come :) Those houseguests - they will be enjoying themselves so much, and I bet things look great already. What kinds of decorating will come next? And sounds like a very good workout. Push/Pull isn't one I do much, but those older Cathe's are really fun. Nothing wrong with short: do what's fun today and you'll want to do more another day! That's faster in the long run.

Janie, you have your priorities right - enjoy Chasie! Keeping active by playing with him is probably a workout all by itself, don't you think? And after 40/20 ... you know, of all the HIIT, that's the one I do the least. Not sure why. Anyway, doubling up today sounds just fine. Would that make Legs plus MMA? That's upper body and lower - not bad. I reuse my 1RMs too, which I just adjust upwards as I go through the program so that it is always challenging. That means they go up as I get stronger! Do you do the same?

Well, what with all the discussion of CCC, you've reminded me I hadn't done it in awhile so I popped it in last night. I just had time for the premix, though. Fun! Hard! All those martial arts rollups are exhilarating. Really love CCC. I could probably get away with doing a Legs workout tonight, too, since really I didn't push them that hard Wednesday ... we'll see. I'd planned to take today off and will probably do that after I get an hour or two done at the office. More travels Monday - headed out your direction, Michelle, Renee!

Hi to Elle, Michelle, and Laura!

And have a great day everyone, and an even better weekend!

First week of school, DONE! And it was an excellent week at that. Today, there was bathroom issues with one of my kindergarten classes. Bound to happen, once one says "I gotta go to the bathroom." Its a domino affect. Had to call for the classroom teacher to come back early, and we had to talk to these adorable little kids...no bathroom during music unless its an emergency. (pee their pants) Hopefully we got thru to them. I have 4 kindergarten classes, and I see them twice a week. I try to keep them so engaged they don't want to leave, but I guess, if you gotta go, you gotta go. Hopefully they will learn to "hold it" and wait. Unfortunately, this class is coming from lunch, so, with that in mind, it will be interesting to see how it goes.

I have been right on task with my early morning workouts. Today, thankfully, was my designated "rest" day, and boy did I need it. Yesterday was Shock Cardio, MMA:Fusion. I am definately getting better at all that rolly stuff. Had a good time doing it. The rotation said Ab Circuits, yoga, but I skipped it. I also had my two hour karate class after school and let me tell you, that made up for skipping yoga. The first hour was basic stuff, and Universal 2. Second hour was kicking, leg strength training and flexibility. OMG! That was the toughest hour in karate to date. I'm sore today, but have done some stretching. Even did Gileads fit TV program, as a warm up so I could get a good stretch in. Felt good.

Shoegal, I sure hope your back feels better soon. You are very smart to listen to your body. Though I must say, working yourself to death to impress house guests sounds silly to me. Yes, a clean house and garden is nice, but to go above and beyond what you find acceptable living standards....well, I don't know. If these folks are so "judgemental" then why deal with them? I know, I should just shut up. But, I am who I am, and I live as I live, cat hair and all, and if others have a problem with it...well, then they don't have to come to my house. My cats live here, they are my family, and I probably like them better then most people anyway! lol...So, do what ya gotta do, but don't be hard on yourself. We like you just the way you are!! :)

The art of being wise is knowing what to overlook. William James

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

~Renee

UGH!!!!
So frustrated not to be able to check in with all of you! I have tried several times when I am at a wi-fi site but invariable run out of time.

AND NOW I have stitches on both of my knees! UGH!! Although luckily I just finished STS so am on my active rest week, but as I can hardly hobble around and I am in extreme pain every time I do move I think it will be an total rest week! I am so frustrated!

Yesterday I bought my DH an IPad as a surprise, I left the kids with my mom in Boulder for the nigh and was planning on a nice evening with my DH. I was really, really, really hungry, but I didn't have a healthy snack handy (which I normally do) I took the girls to Smash Burger, but I didn't want to eat anything as I was meeting the Dh in town for dinner. So although I was literally light headed from hunger I didn't eat....met my mom and dropped the kids off, did the commute back to the mountains and went to the restaurant where I was supposed to meet Bo. However the restaurant was doing a special "Hoootandhanny" party which was kind of expensive and I didn't know if Bo would want to do it, so I went to the Pizza joint next door and sat at the bar and had a glass of wine while I waited for Bo to show up....well Bo doesn't come, I am still starving but don't want to order anything at the Pizza place so I have another glass of wine, and then a a third....I feel a little buzzed, but I can general hold my alcohol pretty well. Any Bo shows up and we go over the the other place. We are sitting outside and talking to lots of people, (small town), any way Bo is playing with his Ipad, we are waiting for our food and I feel a little strange....next thing I know I am coming to with a bunch of people standing over me and 'saying what happened?" Apparently I just lost consciousness, tumbled off of the barstool and landed on my wine glass that I knocked down as I fell down, I have two huge gapping wounds on my knees and we are off to the emergency room...14 stitches later and 2:30 am before we are back home.

It really freaked me out, I have no idea what happened, the only thing I can figure is that it might have been a blood sugar issue, with not eating and all the sugar from the alcohol. I wasn't sober, but I sure wasn't drunk either! Now I have to NOT exercise for at least 5 days at all, and likely longer!! UGH UGH UGH!!!

Did disc 3, legs. Oh boy, these are so so hard on me. Also walked Rolly for 30 min. slowly. It was hard to keep up, but did what I could. Not sure this time how many calories I burned. Tomorrow will have to do MMA Boxing, before Monique comes here.

Deborah, Thanks about my priority, I feel that way for sure. It's nice to hear that. That's exacly what I do with my 1RM's. Great job on CCC. All that talk makes me want to too. Hmmmmmmm, I wont' though.LOL:eek: Not now.

Renee, Sounds like you are enjoying your kids. How adorable about peeing all at the same time. LOL:) Hope you enjoyed that wonderful rest day today. Seems you needed it by doing MMA: Fusion. I know I would have. Wow, Karate is taking hold of you.;) You are doing great.

Laura, OMG! Wonder what happened to you!?!? What did the doctors think? I'm sure drinking without eating caused this. Wow! I'm sure glad nothing worse happened to you. You poor thing!?! Do Take care of your injuries. Jeesh Girl!

Janie

Did MMA Boxing this morning. Sweated like mad! Tomorrow will do step moves.

Had a nice visit with Monique. We went to the Farmers Market, shopped for hamburger for Rolly, and had a wonderful walk with out dogs.

Janie

Good morning everyone! Happy Sunday!

Janie, I love the sound of your workouts. You've got a nice balance there: lifting heavy, sweating hard, and adding in nice walks with Rolly and Monique. What a nice way to combine fitness and rejuvenation :) On MMA Boxing, do you find that the last sequence gets easier? I've done that one only once, and it felt like things were moving along very nicely until the last set, which had me tied in a knot :) You're using a bag, too, right?

Laura, what a sad way to end what should have been a very nice weekend :(:(:( I was hoping you were having too many family outings to post and that was all :( I'm glad you're getting checked. Most likely it is just that combination of stress, sitting for a long time twice, alcohol w/o food to buffer it, and getting up quickly. Sometimes I get a bit light headed if I've been sitting a long time and stand all of a sudden. Please do take all the time you need to feel better. Those stitches sound very nasty. Did you get all the glass bits out??? PS the techie in me thinks that Bo is extremely lucky to have you get him an ipad! Great gift :)

Oops, have more personals to type but need to head out to feed critters, who are all excited because it is 9 and they have not had breakfast!

Did Step Moves today and will walk Rolly later after I recover a bit. This was so much fun.

Deborah, I'm doing the rotation that Cathe created for STS Cardio and the Weight training. I'm feeling so warn out by the last sequence that I don't know up from down!LOL:D I only use the bag when I do the bonus bag workout. I love that one so much. My bag moves though, and was wondering if you had an idea on how to keep it from slipping. It's recommended to put sand or water inside, but I don't. I know it's to light inside, but I don't want to put sand or water in it for fear it might get all over the house. It can't be hung up or screwed into the floor either. I'm thinking a sticky mat or the stuff you use under a rug...any ideas?

Yes, I bet your animals are excited about their daily rituals with Momma. Say hi to them for me.

I know you leave tomorrow on a trip. I just want you to know that I'm going to miss you. Please be safe and get lots of workouts done in-between stuff. See ya when you get back.

Have a great day everyone,

Janie

... and okay, back now to finish up :)

Michelle, I'm headed out your way on Monday but it sounds like you are probably on travel yourself. My Tuesday morning schedule hasn't firmed up yet so let me know if coffee that morning would work for you ...

Renee, you bring back such memories of music class after a meal! The bathroom rush - yes, indeed, one kid is brave to ask and that triggers a mass exodus :D It's great you're keeping on with the karate now that the school year has begun again. That's quite a time commitment, but so worthwhile ... doing something you enjoy, that makes you stronger, and safer too.

Friday and Saturday were definitely strenuous; I'm taking full advantage of being home. Sierra and Atreides both got out for nice long rides. Atreides got to gallop again, which we both loved. Sierra had some lessons in the woods about turning. He is a very proud boy because he now knows he can turn around on a narrow trail, with a rider, without bumping anything! I have to watch him because he wants to show off for the praise. Of course, he does that sort of thing without a rider all the time, so it was more a matter of teaching him the cues.

Friday, I took your advice Michelle, and used my squat racks with Meso 3 squat rack legs dvd. Very fun! I modified heavily because I still want to take it easy with the weight on my shoulders. Substituted rack squats for the front squat. So, I went with 60% 1RM, and used 12 reps instead of 8, and kept the rest periods the same. That meant I got to use 100 pounds on the bar. It felt kind of light, but doing the extra reps gave me a great workout. Fun!!!! Mostly I can rack and unrack pretty well; I have to watch so as not to overshoot the corners. Squats with the bar feel quite natural; lunges require more balance so I appreciated having the lighter weight.

Saturday, I spent six hours spreading bark in our cottage garden. It had been overrun with weeds in the spring, bindweed and thistles and other things that are really hard to root out. It really looked horrible. We have been steadily working it back to where it needed to be, and yesterday's bark, plus a little gravel on the paths, has it looking very nice. I will take pictures when we are done!

Well, that's all for now ... Good morning also to Elle and Shoegal - hope you're having a terrific weekend.

Good Sunday afternoon!

Jeezy peezy, Laura...eat next time. Even if it is junk. No doubt it was an empty stomach and alcohol...what a combination!!! A hard lesson to learn, too. Take time and get better, eat well, rest and recuperate. (((hugs)))

Today it was Hiit 40/20. I don't know, but I think I'm doing that one just a little bit better. Its a super sweat-fest, but it flies by. Then some leg stretching for karate and onto AC:Stability Ball. Now that one really makes you work the core, with all that balancing and rolly polly stuff. Felt like I did fairly well on that one too! I'm gonna give some credit to my karate condtioning from this past week. I'm feeling stronger and more centered. I imagine by the time I reach black belt stage, I should be very centered indeed! ;) Belt graduation, (orange) is coming up on September 10th! Oh, and I finally got all of universal 2. Just needs some practice.

The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak, became a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong. ~Thomas Carlyle~

Have a great week!

Wow love the pics Cathe has up of the new workouts!! Exciting to say the least. Well, my dog sitter (she comes in once a day while DH and I are at work to check on our girls) said that I could come clean her house anyday - it was so clean in there. Well, I know I could have actually cleaned more than I did :eek::eek::eek: but for appearances I think we looked pretty well. I'm a nut when it comes to cleaning - I didn't used to be but now I think I enjoy it a little bit. Oh well, I was happy with the results and we had a nice weekend. Went to 4 new wineries in PA we haven't been to - it was quite a bit of driving though. We found the cutest pub too to eat lunch at and DH and I want to go back - but it is in Titusville - and more like an hour away - this would just be for dinner - so I don't think we'll make it back any time soon.

Gosh Laura - you should have had something to eat!!! Wine will zonk you out faster than anything in my book. Just doing that wine tasting makes me soooooo drowsy I want to collaspe. I'm so sorry about the stiches - I hope you heal quickly! In the meantime - rest - you just finished STS - so celebrate by taking it easy!

Renee - Orange Belt testing so soon!! Wow you'll be a black belt in now time!!! Good luck. My house guests aren't judgmental - its ME!!! I'm critical of myself and that makes me crazy as far as getting the house ready. Like I said I need to calm down but it was all good.

Shadowpup - I wanted to tell you that we finished up Sherlock - and I told Rex about the books you told me about. But right now we are reading about caving. Very interesting - great book. (Can't remember the name) but wow - supercaving - that is intense!! I'm glad you got the horses out for a jaunt - they deserve it. Love the horse stories!!

Janie - sounds as if you had a lovely weekend with your daughter - walking and shopping - all fun - and with Rolly too!!

Hello to Michelle & Elle!!

Well, I wrote a nice post yesterday and then I lost my internet connection at the marina and my words vanished into cyberspace. I was quite miffed about the whole thing and didn't post again. I didn't officially exercise yesterday, except for my walks with Ripken and 2+ hours of scrubbing the boat. That probably counts for something because I sure did sweat alot. But it just doesn't seem the same. Today, I started week 3 (disc 7) of meso 1. The traveling has got me slowed down with my STS workouts, but I keep plugging along. I think I will be glad when meso 1 is history. All those dang pushups--ugh!

Laura: sorry to read about your wine glass accident. I hope your knees heal quickly.

Sister: I have to giggle when I read your post about feeling more centered. Really? I guess there is a dancer in you after all. LOL! Refresh my memory on the belts--orange is the next color for you, right?

Shadowpup: wish I could swing some time to meet you this week, but it's a four day week for me and my schedule is jammed. Dang.:(

Shoegal: sounds like you had a good weekend. I'm afraid I'm like you--I go crazy cleaning the house when I'm expecting company. It's never as clean as I'd like it to be, either.

Janie: Cathe's STS leg workouts get me too. It takes me a whole week to get over the DOMs and then it's time to do the next one. I guess it means we're working those muscles good.

Hope everyone enjoys their Monday.
~michelle

One workout away from finishing mesocycle 1 of STS. I have Athletic Step tomorrow, and abs, then the final legs workout of meso one and then Circuit Blast cardio only on Thursday. I can't wait for my "recovery week." I'm planning on doing lots of step. Step, step, step, step, step!

Sister, being "centered" is NOT an exclusive term used for dance. It takes so much balance and symmetry in karate. But, hey, if it tickles your funny bone, then so be it. And yes, I am sure I mentioned, orange is my next color. Then green, when sparring is introduced and I move into the intermediate class. There have been lots of newbies and white belts lately. Now I know what I was like in the beginning. Not that I am at all "experienced" but I have progressed, that is for sure.

Hope everyone finds the beginning of their week wonderful.

~Renee

Well I am hanging in here, the knees are healing up, a little better every day, but it will be awhile yet before I am in full swing again! I have to teach tonight so that will be interesting to say the least! I will make it through somehow though...

I was going out of my mind with not exercising though, I think I might be a little bit obsessed with it, and so I did do the Upper Body Blast on Cross Train Express yesterday, which I did enjoy and am feeling some nice Doms in my arms today. I skipped the chest and back and just did the shoulders, biceps and triceps. It was fun to do a new routine and for the most part I was lifting heavier than I normally do, and heavier than Cathe and crew. Must be from STS!! I am going to do Chest & Back tomorrow. Hopefully I can start some walking soon and build my legs back up slowly!

Thanks for all the well wishes, yea, I won't be skipping the food again next time, that's for sure. My mom reminded me that my brother had 5 incidents of losing consciousness when he was the age I am now. They did a whole battery of test but never found anything. It never has happened again.

Did disc 4, Chest, Shoulders and Biceps and walked Rolly for 30 min. Burned 528 calories.

Deborah, It's got to be fun to continue to teach the horses and them responding to it. It also seems they love every minute of it. How Fun! You are deffinity using the rack to your advantage. Good going! Oh dear, you should see my over grown garden. You would shake your head in shame. I know I am. Got to get into that garden and clean it up.

Renee, Great job on the improvement of 40/20. Yikes, that one still surprises me on how challenging it is. Glad to see you your ab work, I'll need to watch AC:Stability Abs. I forgot about that one. Looks like Karate is doing good for you. Congratulations for getting more centered/balanced.

I have 30/30 tomorrow and ab circuit Pilates based abs. Oh boy:confused:. You are so close to getting Mesoccle 1 done. Happy for ya! Looks like you'll be having lots of fun with stepping. Yes!

Shoegal, Is it time for CleanMax? I think so, house and garden needs it desperately and on my list of things to do. Why do you inspire me so? I have enough on my plate as it is.LOL:D The wineries sound like fun.

Michelle, Two hours of boat washing to me is a workout for sure. I know what you mean about all those push ups. It does get those little and big muscles in shape for the heavier exercises to come. I do still feel those legs DOM's, but I'll be ready for them coming up Friday, at least I hope so. LOL:D

Laura, So glad you are on the mend and so sorry this had to happen to you. :( How did it go teaching tonight? I was going to sugest to do upper body exercises, but I see you are doing that. Good girl! Congratulations for using heavier weight than Cathe. Giving you a nice pat on the back.:D

I just love our group!;)

Janie

Good morning! Wow, a lot happens in a few days!

Yesterday i did my own yoga practice. No DVD's. No music. Just my mat and me. After a busy day i was craving some quiet and it was so nice. At first my mind was a little restless but after the sun salutations it slowed down.

Everyone seems to be keeping busy.

Janie: Great job burning all those calories. Rolly definitely hit the jackpot being adopted by you: gourmet meals, lots of love, and daily walks in nature. what more could a pup want?

Renee: Your kindergarten students sound adorable! School doesn't start here until September 7, after labour day. You seem to be learning so much in Karate. All of your hard work is paying off and you seem to really enjoy it.

Laura: Sorry to hear about your accident! It's really scary to pass out like that. Hopefully it was only because of the wine on an empty stomach. I hope your knees heal up lickety-split.

Shoegal: I understand wanting your home to be spic and span for your guests. Mentally, i feel so much better when everything is in it's place and clean. Because of my busy schedule i've learned to clean and tidy up throughout the week so it doesn't pile up. I'm not super neat or anything but i can't stand when things start to get cluttered.

Michelle: I think cleaning a boat for two hours would definitely burn some calories! Having a boat seems lovely but also a lot of work. I suppose that could be said about lots of things though. The work is worth it to have the enjoyment. :) The heat has returned here. It was already muggy at 6:30am!

Shadowpup: Looks like you are busy as usual! Have a safe trip.
