Getting Our Licks In!

Hump day. Super hot. Draining.

I am so sore from karate last night. We were working on right leg only, flip kicks and round house kicks. Right side fighting stance, fold right leg...hold it, balance, extend, hold it, re-fold, balance, put down. Slowly then of course fast. Then hold the wall for support, do the same thing but hold it longer...can anybody say OMG! That hurts after a while! Then we go through the motions for a round house kick, but you start in a left side fighting stance, pivot 180 degrees, fold leg, extend leg, re-fold, put down. Ay-yi-yi. I guess tomorrow, I get to do that to the left side. Plus we start work on Tonfu's! (Weapons training)

I did LowMax today 1-4 only. I was going to do the whole thing but my poor body was telling me other wise. I listened.

The fact is, that to do anything in the world worth doing, we must not stand back shivering and thinking of the cold and danger, but jump in and scramble through as well as we can. Robert Cushing

Geez, what happened to me yesterday? I forgot to check in.

Yesterday was a cardio day--did Rhythmic Step. Today was High Step Challenge. UGH! Those high step workouts really get you in the gotchya. I thought this was the workout where you do push-ups around the clock at the end, but it wasn't. Anybody remember which workout those are in?

Well, we are headed back to the crazy heat around here for a few day. At this point, I think I'm getting used to it--but it sure puts a strain on my DH and my pup.

Only 8 more days to the Cathe Roadtrip!

Yo sister! Isn't the round a clock push-ups in 4DS-HIS?;)

Today I felt like lifting for upper body. So, I opted for STS 13, which is chest, shoulders and triceps. I absolutely love having the weight bench and doing bench presses from getting the bar above you instead of hefting it up. Totally makes a difference!

I'm still slightly sore from karate, and I have my long class tonight. I tried practicing Universal 1 earlier, and it was far from pretty. It was "ouchy"! BUT, on the upside, we start tonfu's tonight!!! After flip kicks and round house kicks. (oy)

Plan on walking Rolly today. Also plan on doing High Step Advanced/Challenge. Gulp:confused:. LOL, I'll be just fine with my modifications, I'm sure.

Renee, How fun you are having with Karate. I'm so happy for you. Lots of activities to do for self defense and being in great shape. Good for you listening to your body and opting to do 1-4 of LM.

STS 13 is great. Glad you were able to use your new bench for them. Have you tried Versa Grips! You'll be able to press even more with them. It's an amazing and useful gadget.

I can't wait for you to tell us about tonfu's tonight!

Michelle, Exercise surprises are great, aren't they! LOL;) I don't remember the around the clock push ups for sure, but I know they are in the STS series, just don't know which one. Try to stay cool for the next few days. Spray some water on your pup every now and then. He'll like that.

Like Michelle I forgot to check in yesterday! I had an early morning client and then off to the gym to do the Squat Rack STS to change it up from the plyo legs. Then to Boulder where I spent 4 hours at the DMV reinstating my licence. Had court this morning from my accident this spring! Thankfully the tickets were dismissed, which is ridiculous that I had one anyway! Glad that is all done with. I am taking the day off as I am incredibly sore all over, from 4 days in a row of lifting. I was going to do some cardio, but since I have the girls the only cardio I could do would be step or KB and my legs are just way to sore for that !

Catchick: sounds like you are really loving the challenge and discipline of Karate. It is fun to do new things and challenge our bodies and minds in new ways.

Michelle: it is hot here now as well. I don't envy you the humiduity though. I will be in it soon enough when we leave for Atlanta next week.

Janie: what is the weather like up there like? You haven't mentioned your garden this summer, are you gardening this year or just traveling?

Where are shoegal and shadowpup?

I'm still fighting this bug! I've been loading up on cold f/x but i'm still not feeling good: tired, congested, sore throat (comes & goes), headache. I was hoping to get in some yoga this week but it hasn't happened.:( I'm feeling frustrated that i got sick and haven't been working out at all in more than a week but i'm trying to get better and allow myself the rest until i recover.

Janie: I love buying "school supplies"! I love pretty notebooks and colourful pens...I have more than a lifetime supply but always end up buying more. Rolly eats better than most people!:)

Michelle & Renee: Have you been on a Cathe road trip before? That's great that you can do it together. You are guaranteed to have a great time. I think you mentioned that you have another sister as well (?). Is she as fit as you two?

Laura: Enjoy your day off!

Warmed up with TBS and after wards did Step Fit. Planning on taking Rolly for a walk later today. Hopefully it will still be overcast when I go. The coolness still feels good on my skin.

Laural, So glad everything at court went your way. 4 rows in a row for weight lifting? Do be careful, it's a good thing you are resting today. You don't want any injuries.

The weather is overcast in the morning and sunny during the day. It doesn't get over 80 degrees at all, mainly stays in the 70's lately. It's pure heaven!

I decided since we were traveling big time this year that I would put the garden to sleep this year. Put black tarp over all the gardens. The garden needs a rest anyway. First time since we lived here, I didn't have a garden. I also decided I don't think I want to travel much anymore. It's just too demanding on all the animals and myself. At least that is what I think so far, I might change my mind later. But, I love it at home, there is nothing like home sweet home. :) I'm thinking about buying a couple of plants or more today. I threw all my other ones away thinking I wouldn't be here (because of traveling) to care for them.

Elle P, Shoot, I sure hope you feel better soon. Life does throw us a wrench or two our way doesn't it? It's OK, just get back on the band wagaon when you feel better. Make sure you take enough time to recover from this cold or flu. Then you will be more than ready to start a routine again. (((((Hugs to You))))). It will be OK, whatever you do, don't give up.

I knew someone out there love "school supplies" as much as I do! WooHoo! Especially when they are bran new.;)

Yes, Rolly eats better than us LOL:eek:. I want him to last as long as he can. Maybe I'll get at least 11 years with him, if I'm lucky, more.:)

Definitly enjoyed my day off yesterday! Was needing it.

Busy day again..had an early morning client, than quickly got stuff together for a day in Boulder including a picnic lunch for 3 hours at the pool with friends and their kids, and then the girls had tutoring while I ran a ton of errands, we didn't get home until 6 and I was tired and cranky from the heat, had to unload all the stuff and put it away. The girls weren't hungry so I did AS from SC and I have to say that one is getting a little easier for me as I am more familiar with the steps and I think all the plyo legs in Meso Cycle 3 is making improvements in my over all endurance and cardio vascular health

Elle: I missed your post prior to the last one somehow, just caught it this time...hope you feel better soon. remember that rest is so important for recovery, believe me I know it is hard, but I just read again in Oxygen Mag the importance of NOT exercising while you are sick and how counter productive it can be... the important thing is to get right back at it when you are feeling better and not letting any more time go to waste..

Janie: Lucky pup! Sounds yummy! Yes I needed to rest it is true, my schedule got hetic and had to back it up, but I did make sure to alternate body parts as much as possible! It is good to rest the ground just like our bodies!! LOL!

__________________Michelle: did you get t-shirts? So jealous of the up coming road trip with Cathe! How FUN!!! Take lots of photos to share with us. Where is it again? I love the early mornings, just wish I could make myself get up to enjoy them..

Catchicks: I love your enthusiasm that seeps through your posts! As a pilates instructor it seems so unbalanced to work one side of the body so intensely in one class I wonder what there philosophy is on that? Do You know?

Hi all,

Quick check in - things are going pretty well, though hectic as hectic can be. Next week is our review, and I have half a dozen people flying in from DC to see if my team and I have been doing a good job this past year, and whether we should get our next year's funding  In a way, it is good to have these other distractions as frankly I've spent less time worrying than some years

Looks like everyone is doing well, which is great! Workouts are going fine. I'm alternating whole body workouts (Kettlebells, TRX, Muscle Max, and Kelly's 30 minutes strength) with a mix of the shorter HIIT most days. Not as much time to work out, so I love that they get the job done fast. Still, I'm trying not to do them more than twice a week. The kettlebells are great fun. I miss the heavy duty splits but I don't want to overdo them.

Janie, spoil Rolly with that great food - he is one lucky pup! And I second the recommendation for Versa gripps. LOVE mine!

Laura, it says a lot for Plyo Legs that it can help *your* cardiovascular fitness - you are pretty incredible that way already, I'd bet :)

Elle, those summer bugs are the worst. Get well soon ((hugs)).

Michelle, Road trip, road trip, road trip! That's all I've got to say. You need to enjoy it double for those of us who are not going :)

Shoegal, I need to hunt for your last post - missed it somewhere!

Renee, love hearing about the Karate - brings back fond memories. Congrats on the first belt! I still have every one of mine.

Remind me to tell you the story of why Sierra didn't come visit me at a gallop when I got home last week - it is kind of funny, though I felt bad for him! He's doing great.

Off now, we have dinner ... did want to at least say hello. I miss being online regularly.

Its been a few days...

Yesterday I did 4ds HIS/LIS double cardio. It was a lot of fun. Can't remember when I did either step routine from 4ds. Today is my rest day, except, I went to morning karate. HA! Not much of a rest. We worked on flip kicks, stretching and flexibility. I will be sore for the rest of the day, and thats okay. We also worked on reverse punches and round house kicks, trying to break boards. Punches are a lot easier for me then kicks. The boards are grooved plastic, so they can be put back together and don't think for a minute that its easy, because it is not. Thursday night we worked with Tonfu's for the first time. A tonfu is a billy club type of weapon, and of course, ya gotta learn the skills. Whoopee....thats not easy either. I've been practicing the basic switch back across the body, high and low, with alternating punches. Ya gotta be fast, but right now, I'm far from it. But its fun, and look forward to the day when my skills are honed.

Next Saturday Michelle and I will be emmersed in Cathe road trip! Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!

Laura, I have no clue why they work one side more then the other in karate. Seems weird to me too. Perhaps its getting people to work their "dominant" side to learn these skills before switching to the weaker side...I don't know. We did make up for it in the next class, by working the left, but not quite as intensly. (?)

Its great to hear from everybody...except where is Shoegal???

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.

Shoegal has gone to the beach--I think we should expect her back at the end of the month.

I forgot to check in again yesterday. It was a busy day. But I did do High Step Circuit in the morning. I saved the "easier" high step routine for the end of the week because I tend to be a little less energetic on Fridays. There are only two sets of leg presses in the high step circuit routine and I was happy for that. All these leg presses this weeks have got the top part of my thighs/inner legs really feeling it. I'm thinking stretch today and then travel fit early tomorrow.

We are back into the super duper hot weather. Today the temp is supposed to be 101 with heat indexes up to 115. Ick. We have a pool party tonight with our yacht club. There will be shrimp and then everyone brings a dish. Joe is doing meatballs in bourbon barbecue sauce. Yummy. He's got stuff slow warming in the crockpot. I took Ripken for two walks this morning--there is a very warm breeze that is keeping the air moving, but it is still icky. My little buddy is hunkered down in the a/c in the boat napping. Ah, the life of Ripken.

Laura: yup, get ready to be super hot. Atlanta in July and August--just lovely. How long are you staying this year? And why is it when you have an accident due to the weather that the police officers feel like they have to give you a ticket? Thank goodness there are judges who understand that this is just nutty. And I didn't get the shirts done--but I still have time (I think). There is a shop right here in Solomons that can do them.

Shadowpup: good to hear from you. Looking forward to the horse story. Hope you are able to spend a little more time with us soon.

Janie: so are you staying home right now for a while? That's what is sounds like. It's nice that you can plant something in July and feel like it has a chance of surviving. You sure couldn't do that in Virginia right now.

Elle: wow, you are still fighting that bug? That stinks. I've been coughing for almost a month but the pass few days not so much. Take it easy--these summer colds/sinus thingys seem to last longer.

Sister: yup--next week we'll be in Glassboro! I think it should take us about 3 1/2 hours to drive there. I'm thinking we will leave no later than 10 am from Spring Cove Friday morning. Oh--I never got an official invite to the sunset parade, so I'm thinking we'll take a pass on that unless its 70 degrees. LOL! I'm doing an active recovery week--light cardios and stretches--

Stay cool everyone.

Step Works for me today! It was fun! But what Cathe step dvd isn't fun? Huh?

Contemplating what to do with the rest of my day. Stay home or go to the pool. Those are the only options for this heat wave. I love summer, but this one sure has been super duper hot. I've only done one bike ride and one hike. Last summer I probably had done a dozen or more by now.

Three more weeks and its back to school for teachers in my county. Wowzers, time sure does fly! Even though my outdoor activities have fallen to the wayside this summer, I am doing karate, and I am really enjoying it. The weekend after the roadtrip I will be going to watch a karate tournament. Master Ally and I discussed if I should enroll for this or not, and we decided because of my "vacation a la Cathe" coming up, and lack of time to train, I should probably wait for the next one. Okay by me! I still feel very new to it all, especially when we do weapons training. When I do enroll for tournament, things that I would be doing is weapons kata's/forms, holds, universal one and two (two I don't know yet) and board breaking. All those things definately need work! Once I get my green belt, (I'm two belts away) I could start sparring! I liken karate to dance quite often. The lines and forms are so precise and takes so much training, grace and fluidity. I love to watch dance but karate is more my thing, because of the "fight" aspect to it. Not that I thrive on violence, its just that I like the mental and physical toughness of it all. Over coming adversity in the form of an oppenent...real or perceived.

The virtue lies in the struggle, not in the prize.

Waked Rolly and the rest is a rest day. I might do a cardio. Will clean more of the house today. It needs it so badly.

Laura, I feel the same benefits from plyo legs when I did STS. Remarkable! Great job on your workout.

Was worried about you for nothing. As long as the weight workouts were body parts instead of a full body workout each day, then, I can breathe a little easier. You are doing such a good job. I don't know why I was thinking you were doing full body workouts all those days. Hmmmmmm, forgive me, I'm getting older.

Deborah, Just wanted to remind you to tell us the story of why Sierra didn't come visit you at a gallop when you got home.

Your workouts are amazing. Keep up the good work.

How is the home front situation these days?

Renee, Great job on your workouts yesterday. Enjoy your rest day today. Sounds like you enjoyed your rest day with Karate. You seem to be having a blast. Good for you.

I can't wait for you to go on the Road Trip. Pictures please and if you have a minute, let us know how it is going while you are there.

Michelle, Thanks for letting us know about Shoegal. Hope she has a wonderful time at the beach.

Great job on HSC and all the leg presses you did this week. Do you think it's the easiest one of the set? Not easy for me, but much more doable than the others.

Enjoy the pool party. I bet it will be a relief from the hot temps. Poor Ripken, thank goodness for A/C.

Yes, I don't want to travel for awhile. I'm so done with it for now. It was just way to hot for my body to stand. I love being home.

I only repotted my inside houseplants. I just got them yesterday and they were outgrowing their containers big time.

Renee, I too, love all of Cathe's steps.

What? Three more weeks and you have school again! Time does fly very fast.

Enjoy your Karate experiences, they sound like a really fun time.

Hi Everyone. Did Double Cardio from 4DS tonight. Almost didn't motivate as the day got away from me and it was dinner time. Ended up cooking for the girls and letting them watch a movie while I worked out. I must have gotten a second wind because I had a blast and tons of energy and I was able to really work the routine which was fun! Yesterday I did STS Arms.

Shoegal! Welcome back! Can't wait to hear your story....glad you are still finding time to workout, which is of course the most important thing! How are things with the girl staying at your place?

Catchick: I really enjoyed Double Cardio as well! So much fun! Your enthusiasm for Karate is contagious...enjoy the pool!

Michelle: wow, stay cool! I bet it feels better out on the water....Give Ripkin some water from me! We are going to be gone a total of 2 weeks, but we will spend one week at a beach house on Paulee Island. A few days on each end of the trip in Atlanta. I am pretty sure we will spend a LOT of our time in the pool! It is crazy about the ticket, but in CO whenever you lose control of your car, no matter what the conditions or circumstances, you get a ticket for reckless driving...thanks for keeping up with shoegal...I was wondering what happened to her as well...

Janey: ahhh CLEAN MAX, I am do for that as well.....don't think it will happen before my trip, my schedule is very tight until then! Yep I am still doing STS so it is a 3 day split each week, plus one full body workout for my class, but I tend to mix that up and do different things so my body doesn't get to worked. Thanks for caring!

:p:eek:Back from the Beach - sunny and really super hot Outer Banks!!! I had a fabulous time there - everyone in my family did but I am also glad to be back. I missed DH and my girls so much!!! I also had a very pleasant surprise upon returning - a new foster pup . . .. Gunner!! Oh my goodness - what a sweet sweet boy. Young and so inexperienced. He was in a shelter in Erie and was found as a stray - was there for about a month - an unusual black and white GSP so he is just beautiful - doesn't seem to have any experience with any typical dog type activities.:confused: Rex picked him up and brought him into rescue on Friday evening and gave him a bath right away - Rex said he just stunk!! Rex said - it seems like the first bath he has ever had - was completely unsure of the car and didn't want to stick his head out of the window. He is also not house trained - so there have been some accidents :p:( - but he'll get it. He wants affection in a big way - he is super in the crate however - probably because he has spent a great deal of time in one. He'll go there even when he has the run of the house. More on Gunner later - when I know more but I'm in love already. I contemplate keeping him even this early - but I just can't help it.

Ok - well, workouts were not consistent - but did swim daily. I walked a long way along the sound one morning. The next morning I ran - but running was hard on my back and my back was in super bad shape - I think it was the bed. I did Travel Fit another day and this 10 minute solutions video with a band with Amy Bento - put 4 workouts on that video together to make it a 40 minute workout - so I am actually happy with that but I will be working hard this week to make up. Need to diet too. Too many cocktails and good food. :p:eek::eek::eek:

I did read most of the posts - everyone seems to be on track - glad to be back - missed the check in too!

Happy Monday!

This morning I did STS 15, Back and Biceps.

I have a lot to do today in prepartion of vacation/Cathe road trip. Gonna take care of all pet needs first. They are priority one. Then pick up a few things for me.

Its cooled down a little in central Virginia. Hope it lasts for more then one day.

Gotta run...
~Renee~

First--the heat has broken here. Thank goodness. This morning, Ripken and I truly enjoyed our walk. Then I did Athletic Step and powerhour abs from ab hits.

Sister and I are in countdown mode: 4 more days to the Cathe Roadtrip. Sister is running errands today in preparation. I just printed the detailed packing list--and boy it is extremely detailed. I will start packing my bag tonight. I am not planning on taking my laptop with me but sister will have her blackberry so maybe we can use that to post stuff. Sometimes hotels have computers that you can use--or maybe we can snag some time on someone else's computer. We will definitely take lots of pictures and post them here and on facebook afterwards.

Shoegal: welcome back from the beach. I thought you had one more week and I'm guessing that you'd like to have another week off too. A new foster pup--how great. Sounds like you are going to be busy getting him acclimated. How are your girls reacting to him and he to them?

Laura: Love that 4DS double cardio. It has become one of my favorites. Have a great time in Georgia. Have you read Dorthea Benton Frank's books? She uses the South Carolina/Georgia coast as the setting for her stories. I love her books--good summer reading if you are looking for something.

Janie: I saved the HSC workout for the end of the week because it is easier than High Step advanced training and High Step Challenge. Doing those 3 high step workouts in one week, you really feel your glutes and thighs by the end of the week.

Somebody pinch me--sister and I are going to meet Cathe and the gang. Oh boy!
~michelle

Man couldn't go to sleep last night due to the full moon. I am really crazy how they effect me! I was tired and went to bed at a reasonable hour of 10:30. I must have fallen asleep around 3:30. Not fun. Luckily Bo could drop the kids off at Horse back riding camp so I went back to bed. But I didn't get my bike ride in that I had planned to take so bummed about that...

I did get a workout in though with my two classes. I only had 2 in my pilates class who have been dedicated students of mine for over a year so I was able to really run them through a workout which was fun and challenging. And then I did a leg class in my total tone alternating some plyo leg moves with weight moves and then some leg conditioning drills. I toped it off with a quicker version of STS legs with squat rack. I am trying to get in a full week of STS before I leave on thursday when I will take an active 2 week rest so going to push hard until then.

Shoegal: welcome home! We missed you. A new foster pup OH MY! We are getting a new Great Pyrenees soon! A friend of the breeder was showing her puppy at a show, to build her pedigree, and she some how ended up in a pen with a winning male. Loll and behold she is preggo's!! So we should get a puppy this fall. She sent pics of the parents and they are absolutely gorgeous! The girls are so excited. I will be joining you on a diet when I get back from my trip!!

Catchick and Michelle: I wish they had a green with envy face!! Cause that is what I am!! Have so much fun! Meet ton of fitness enthusiasm and kick some booty for all of us on the Getting Licks in team!! Meanwhile I will be getting fat and lazy on the beach...

I'm finally feeling back to my old self!:D I did one of the Step Blast premixes yesterday and found it pretty hard but i'm glad i was finally able to do something. I'm still feeling tired so i went to bed at 9:30pm last night.

This week will be a short week for me at work.:) I'm off on Friday since i need to use up some of my vacation days and then we have a holiday on Monday so it will be a nice four day weekend. In the meantime i have to hustle and make sure i meet all my deadlines by Thursday.

Renee & Michelle: You will have a great time on the road trip together. Take lots of pics for us.

Shoegal: Gunner sounds adorable! I remember when i adopted Marino he had no clue how to walk on a leash or anything about riding in a car. He caught on quickly though. Post a pic when you can.

Shadowpup: I hope your review goes well. I was supposed to have mine as of July 18 but that came and went and there has been no mention of it since. My manager isn't the greatest at managing so i'm not suprised.

Janie: I love the way a clean home feels. It creates a nice energy in the home when everything is in its place.

Laura: sorry about your rough night. It's frustrating when you are tired but can't get to sleep.

Have a great day everyone!
