Getting Our Licks In!

Was 108 degrees in Vegas today. Did take Rolly out at 8pm for an hour walk, and it was about 80 degrees this evening. Not too shabby. I wonder what the temp holds for tomorrow.

Renee
, Great job on Step Jam. I do love that one as well. How fun to have mirrors! Might be expensive, but I can see it would be worth it.

Drumming does sound like a lot of fun!:D

I think I do a similar workout with plastic swords, called Forza. It's a Samurai workout by Ilaria Montagnani. Love that workout.

Seems you are doing very well in your Karate class and improving enough to use weapons. Oh Boy, is right. You have to let us know how that goes.

Rolly is doing better than I thought he would. He is such a joy.:)

Michele, Great job on those workouts.;) Glad you knew better to back off from certain exercises a little to get that elbow rested.

Enjoy your boat this weekend.

Need to get to bed. Have a nice night everyone.

Hot and muggy here, but thats okay, we got more rain which is the most important thing!

Today I did Pyramid Lower Body. Hadn't done that one in a while! During the leg presses, I forgot to shave off 2 reps with each weight increase. Couldn't figure out why I felt rushed. Afterwards, it dawned on me what I was doing so thankfully I did not continue that way with the rest of the workout.

Today I will be headed to my friends pool. Its a good day for it.

Everyone stay committed to their exercise!!!

We finally have gotten some rain as well, but not as much as sister got. But some rain is better than none. Hopefully, more of the wet stuff fell at home than here at the marina.

Today is a rest day. Just walkabouts with the pup and some light housekeeping this morning.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Walked an hour this evening with Rolly. It was a little too early to do that and got overheated. Drank lots of water to recuperate. Today it got to 108 degrees in Vegas. Jeesh!

Renee, Great job on PLB.

Michelle, Isn't it heaven with a day of rest? You deserve it big time.

Take care,

Janie

Today is my rest day. But I was feeling mighty tight from pyramid lower body. So, I put my step on the floor (no risers) and did Basic and then after that I did the first segment of Stretch Max. I feel a little bit better then before my "light" workout. I have no big plans for the day. I will probably do a little more stretching and work on my flexibility and a few karate moves. The afternoon looks like a lot of baseball games to choose from. My couch, the cats, baseball on the tube. Excellent!

Hi all,

I wanted to give you a quick catch up on what's going on. This is mainly a vent, so please feel free to skip it and just be assured I have not broken anything, gotten sick, or had anything bad happen to the four legged kids :)

STRESS VENTING STARTS ...

Shortly after my last post, that weekend home, we had a strange call and then a visit from the 17 year old girl Clara who watches our horses, dogs, etc when we are out. She's been very responsible and all the kids are in good shape after her time here. Turns out her parents (read: dad, with mom not having the guts to stand up for her kids) had given her an ultimatum a few days ago: she had to move out in ten days. No appeal.

Now, this behavior is illegal in our state. There are no provisions for emancipation of minors, and parents are subject to imprisonment if they abandon their minor children. Turns out her older sister (not a minor) and her oldest sister (ditto) were also told to leave. There are brothers in the home, including a four year old, and Clara does not want her parents to go to jail and have the youngest sib end up in foster care. This is a really rotten family situation in some ways, and yet a very postive one in others - not to bore you with background but there was sexual abuse of the daughter when she was about 7, apparently by a family member such as an uncle or cousin - and the whole family continues to reel from ramifications. Kids have all had much time and energy invested in them, much education and many special things such as ponies and such as youngsters, yet there was a tremendous rigidity applied to the daughters. The father's side is heavily tied to enforcing traditional female roles. Much more to it than that but it isn't mine to tell, many old wounds .... Last time Clara was thrown out she was fourteen, and slept on park benches. According to her. And I believe her, I think.

But there we were last weekend, with a scared youngster who comes up to about my shoulder trying to be brave and ask if she could stay with us for eight months until she finishes high school. She'd enquired about options for taking more classes, had a plan, and so on. We asked her to come back the next day, talked it over, and decided we would attempt a trial period of a month to see if (a) things would blow over, (b) verify what is really going on, (c) establish some legal footing and etceteras - I don't trust this family not be setting us up to be honest, and so on. We have been speaking to law enforcement and other types of areas carefully. Got the spare room cleared of stored things. And now I will whimper a little ... WHINE STARTING I had to go to DC on Monday for an intense series of bizdev for the week, at a delicate time in our company's planning cycle, and normally I am working 90 hours a week about now with no travel. Those tasks still have to get done. And we had to get the hay in right now, since that is when it has ripened and the weather permits. And all there are numerous little things I have to do with this political office - there aren't too many associated responsibilities, but there are some, and it adds up to almost half a day a week. I have yet to finish off the root canal escapade because the new cap had not arrived before the trip to DC. And turns out I have to finalize some bits and pieces for my five-year clearance review. At home, we had launched on setting up a trust tied to our wills - my husband wants to do this now, and since I have been bugging him, I'm really happy and that is in progress - but it is a little scary since naturally visiting a trust means thinking about each other dying :( All in all, this has been very chaotic, high drama, and intense period on all fronts. WHINE OFF

I returned at midnight Friday, Clara moved in by noon yesterday, and the hay is stacked in the barn now, and the half we aren't using has been sold and hauled off. So, success?

I am doing my best and trying to be safe, proactive, empathetic, and not a sucker, yet not kicking a person I think is a good kid while she's down. My DH is, I worry, beginning to think of her as a daughter. She is not a daughter, but a person in need we are intending to help. A key distinction.

This is why I am not posting much. I *am* working out regularly, and doing my best to keep my energy up through postive thinking, cutting down worry, sleeping, eating well and trying not to eat too much comfort food - and just generally forging on with a positive hopeful attitude as best I can, arranging as much as possible, and trying not to feel bad about what I'm allowing to slip or do less well than usual. Yesterday was Muscle Max, from start to finish, except for the core part that hurts my back! What was pretty neat is that I was able to use my barbell and new 'manta' shoulder protector, loaded at 45, for the squats and lunges. That is only a tiny fraction of my 1RM, but there are no breaks, so it wasn't too bad. Could have gone heavier on squats, was about right for lunges. Exceeded Cathe's choices on every weight, which was a good feeling! Of course, she is talking and couldn't go all out.

I miss participating in our regular check ins here and really will need them to stay on track. I will continue to be on as often as I can. I have glanced at you a time or two; it helps me feel grounded :D

PS Honestly, I don't think it is safe for me to take vacations!!! On the other hand - perhaps this is my time to become more involved in the non-business side of life ... to contribute something other than my technical skills to community and society? To handle new challenges? I don't quite know. But please pray me this prayer if you will- the power and courage to successfuly change what I can, the humility that will enable me to accept that there will be things I cannot change and must let go, and most especially, wisdom enough to discern which is which - and act accordingly.

Renee, Enjoy your rest day. Great job on PLB and SM.

Deborah, You are both so caring and loving. I'm sure you'll find a solution and guidance to tackle this situation. My prayers and hugs are with you both to find some answers to help this girl.

You are a problem solver and I'm sure once you have remedied it, things will go a lot smoother.

In the meantime, enjoy the new family member and support her as you can.

Have to take my hat off to you, this is a huge challenge. Wish I could help in someway.

Janie

Took a break this weekend except for walkabouts with Ripken. Did GS Legs this morning which I definitely think is tougher than Leaner Legs.

Shadowpup: Holly molly girlfriend! Talk about having a full plate and then a heaping of leftovers on top. Ohmygosh, ohmygosh, ohmygosh. I don't know what to say except hang in there. Right now I don't have any words of wisdom. You've got so much going on, just be sure to take care of yourself. If you have a spare moment while you are out east, give me a call and you can vent some more. I'll write you on your work email too because I'm guessing you may not get back to the Cathe Nation for a few days.

Mid-July, All Star game coming up! This is peak summer, now its all down hill. But its still ALL good. Today I did MMA: Kickbox! Loved it, it was so much fun. Afterwards I tackled the first page and half of STS 1 RM's. Most everything has gone up 5 pounds for chest and biceps, which is good, it will make my second round of STS just a challenging as the first. I thought I would wait until after the road trip to do the 1 RM's, but heck, I have all the time in the world to do them now, so, that is my goal this week. Completing the 1 RM's for STS. I'm 4 days away from my yellow belt. Still have some training left to do for that! Its gonna be great!

Took a walk with Rolly, it is getting hot.

My son can go to the gym anytime he'd like, but unfortunately he doesn't do gym stuff, and we're not allowed to go without him.:(Grrrrrrrrrrrr. I can do yoga, push ups, lunges... and those things, but, it's just not the same. I don't know enough to workout without equipment or without a DVD to watch from. Wow, something I will look into once we get back home so this doesn't happen again. I didn't take along any DVD's thinking I would use the gym.

I'm slowly gaining weight, but will get home around Sat. and get back to our normal lives and work hard to get rid of the extra poundage.

Michelle, Great job on the leg workout. It is a tough workout to be sure.

Renee, Great job on the Kickboxing. Congratulations for gaining up to 5 pounds on the weight lifting and finishing the STS series. That is wonderful. I bet you look amazing. Great plan to do the 1RM's now and not later.

Take care everyone,

Janie

Hello Everyone:

So my sister came up and stayed for the weekend along with her 2 Golden Retrievers, Harold and Howie - it was great - lots of fun. We all went out to dinner on Friday night, came home and lounged around and talked. Saturday we let the boys run around the property - jumping into the creek - exploring and so forth - that was alot of fun. We got ready to go a little later and headed off to the outlets for shopping. Bought WAY TOO MUCH including a new pair of shoes :D. Her husband was coming up in the evening and all 4 of us were going out to dine together. We were also invited to the neighbor's bonfire that evening. We did both - it turned out to be a rather late evening so both of them stayed over another night so we all had a rather nice weekend.

I shall be doing Legs & Glutes this evening. I ended up buying this DVD - I just wanted Legs & Glutes but there didn't seem to be any way of just getting that workout without Kick, Punch & crunch - I didn't want to buy a download - or a VHS. So I have no intention of ever doing KP&C - I have tried Cathe KB in the past but I'm afraid I'm simply not a Kickbox fan and I'm just not going to even try it anymore. But I'm excited about L&G !!!!

Shadowpup - good to hear from you. Not sure what to say - except that I'm proud of you - despite all of the complications there must be in that entire situation - simply not black and white there. I don't think this is in any way an easy thing for you - but I think in some way you'll be rewarded for your kindness. I wish there was something I could do as well to help. I think you know you can look to all of us here as a source of support.

Michelle - HOT, HOT, HOT in Virginia - we had a rather hot weekend here too but really beautiful though - no boat time for me though. :( Gym style workouts are tough for sure - I haven't done those in awhile - maybe it is time to revisit them again.

Janie - sounds as if you are braving all of that hot weather too - don't worry you'll get right back on track once you get home. It is hard to know what the situation is going to be for exercise when you travel - you just have to do the best you can. I bring a portable dvd player sometimes and a couple of travel friendly workouts.

Hello to Renee, Elle & Laura!!!!

I will be vacationing next week - have lots to do at work before I go!!!

Hi Everyone! I have been MIA again for a few days, no excuses really except to say that it is the general lack of schedule and wonderful fun of summer.

Today was a great hike on an absolutely gorgeous ridge where you get vistas from the continental divide to the plains and Denver. Tons and tons of wild flowers from all the rain. My friend and I did some trail running on the 'flat' areas and walked the step declines and elevation gains. I don't know how far we went but we went for 2 hours and my friend had did the same hike the day before with other people in 3 hours so we were making some great time.

Than I taught my Pilates class and my Total Tone Class. Yesterday I did STS Shoudlers, Bicep and Tricep. Saturday was a day at the Opera. Friday was IMAX.

I didn't read all the posts but Shoegals that was on this page. Looks like I missed some important stuff though so I am going to go back and catch up.

It's been crazy busy with work and social events with family. I'm still keeping up with my yoga though. Sunday i ended up working the whole day and wasn't really happy about it but later in the evening i got some fantastic news: The CFO (my boss) has "resigned"! I don't like him very much (that's putting it mildly!) and i'm pretty sure he was told to resign from the way it all came about. He'll be gone by the second week of August. Woo-hoo!

Janie: That really sucks not being able to use the gym! You can't pay for a day pass or something without your son? Well, at least you'll be home soon enough and back to it. I don't think it will be a problem for you since you have maintained a healthy lifestyle for so long.
Why do you purchase your Retin-A in Mexico? Is it much cheaper?

Shadowpup: Sending blessings and good vibes your way! I hope this situation works itself out in the best possible way for all involved. Hang in there!

Hello to Michelle, Renee, and Laura.:)

Quick post. Did step blast this morning. Great fun--lots of sweating. Very humid here--but Ripken and I got our long walk in before I did my exercise. It rained a few times yesterday and we may get more today which is good since we didn't have hardly any rain in May and June.

I'll be back later. The computer folks are coming to install my new machine.

Hey there Shoegal! It sounds like you had a wonderful weekend with family, dogs, sleepovers and shoes! Isn't it great to have such good times, better then you expected. That happens with my family on rare occassions. I wish it would happen more, but family dynamics can be so "dynamic!" At summer solistice, I promised to do away with negativity and accept people for who they are, no matter the history. Its easier with friends then family, but I think I'm getting there. My Mom is such a good person and often sees things thru rose colored glasses. I am a realistic type of person, but I want to be more like my Mom in that respect...accepting everybody, forgiving and moving on. We are on this planet for such a short time and I would hate to leave this world bitter, or with feelings unresolved, especially those left behind. Ah, deep thoughts...and enough! Geesh!

I love Kickboxing, but its not for everybody. I almost did another kickbox today, then thought about Step Blast and reached for Step Moves instead. I still had a "blast!"

Elle I am very happy for your upcoming change of command at work. A good boss or leader does make a difference and definately sets the tone in the work place. I have had some school principals that I hated working for, which made that job less then a joy. Luckily, I have a wonderful prinicipal, and a wonderful school of kids, so, I'm generally a happy camper.

ShadowPup, you are amazing and I'm sure this new addition to your family will work out fine. I'm sure there will be bumps in the road, but you are a problem solver and very caring and you manage to do it right. We are here for ya!

Laura I have only gotten in one hike this summer. It was a great hike, but weather or schedules or whatever excuse there may be, it just isn't happening like last summer. But thats okay, I'm really enjoying my new interest in karate.

Sometimes I don't put a quote, but today I have two:
Reputation is what men and women think of us; character is what God and angels know of us. Thomas Paine
It requires less character to discover the faults of others, than to tolerate them.

Today was my beginner Pilates Class and than I took the girls swimming in the pool after my class. I decided not to do Chest and Back as my arms were sore from my Upper Body workout on Sunday and my Total Tone Class from last night. I hate it when I get behind because than it messes up all the next workouts! I decided to try out Step Moves which I had never done before as I felt like I had the time today to learn it. I did have to rewind a lot and still fumbled through a few of the parts, but overall enjoyed it and once I get familiar with the routine I think I will like it a lot, especially on the days I am short on time.

Catchick: Hey we were doing the same workout today! I love hiking, it doesn't even seem like a workout, but time for me to reconnect with myself, my friends if they are with me, and this beautiful world of ours. I should post some pics of my hikes, they really are splendid.

Michelle: we have had a lot of rain here and it is very green, the wildflowers are coming out and they are spectacular this year!

ElleP: sounds like we are in similar place with family and social events! It is so crazy! Good job keeping up with the yoga despite your busy schedule. Sounds like a good thing with your job!

Shoegal: what a fun time it sounded like you had! Did you wear a new outfit when you went out? You know KPC is the least KB of all Cathe's workouts you might want to give it a whirl if you are ever feeling bored with step, which is HIGHLY unlikely!;):D

Shadowpup: WOW that is really a BIG thing happening in your already busy life. I am impressed with how you are handling the situation. I think it is a smart thing to do a trial run for a month before committing to longer before you know how it will work out. I feel so sorry for the girl, or all of the children in that house hold. I imagine with how much you travel you home must really be a sanctuary for you and to open it up to some one else must be a big step for you. I will hold that prayer with you in mind, although I think we could all benefit from it!

We had more rain last night--YEAH! And this morning during Ripken and my walkabout, there was a little breeze blowing, so it wasn't too bad. Ripken didn't hang with me too long this morning to get his licks in. After the warm-up and for GS Chest and Triceps and the drop set push-ups, he decided to head for the cool tile floor and a serious nap which left me by my lonesome to exercise.

So, at my place of work, each division has chosen a unofficial holiday to throw a company-wide party. This started many years ago with a Holloween party and has grown to include other days, like Valentine's Day, St Patrick's Day, Bastille Day, and Happy New Fiscal Year Day. Today was Bastille day, and my division sponsors the Bastille Day party--food, singing, picture buttons at the guillotine, and games (hat toss, waiter's race, arc d'triomph limbo). I helped with the Hat Toss game and participated in the limbo. Made it to the lowest limbo bar height and didn't make it--the winner is a yoga wiz. So, I obviously need to add yoga to my routine. Soooooo....

Elle-P: I've been looking at Shiva Rhea's dvds. Which do you recommend for a beginner?

Shoegal: sounds like you had fun with your sister and the pups. I think everyone here knows that dogs are one of the greatest joys in my life. It's okay to be goofy with them and to enjoy life's simple things.

Okay--back to work--hi to everyone else: Janie, Laura, and sister.
~michelle

Hi Gals!!

I did Legs and Glutes as expected on Monday - I had written up my impressions of it in a post but was too busy to finish it so I just dropped it. Really liked it - so many different exercises for the legs - and I had DOMS!! My main question to everyone is - where does this fall in the scale of leg workouts - easier or harder than Leaner Legs or Gym Styles??? Nobody really talks about this one.

Last night I did Christi Taylor's "Stepping Zone" - don't remember doing this one before but managed to do 95% of it without a problem - when I got to the 3rd mega combo - I wasn't too keen on learning the 2nd half of it - I'm confident I could have got it - but I didn't even try.

Laura - right now I don't think I'll tire of step - but you know what - I tired of hi/lo - I won't do that anymore - it sort of bores me . And the reason I dislike KB is because it bores me too - I suppose I'm easily bored :eek: Oh well - I don't think STS goes as planned for anyone - so don't beat yourself up about it - but I know you'll adjust.

Renee - I have a great family and we are generally very close - but I can't tell you there aren't issues that crop up. You are right - in that you can't focus on the negativity - if ya did - I think we'd all hate each other. Right now we are having major vacation drama concerning who is driving with who - I won't get into it - but goodness - I've had just about enough of it!!!

Michelle - I want to work where you work. Bastille Day - how fun!!! Who chose that! Very creative. Heavens - we don't have too many parties around here. I don't usually attend the Christmas Party - it is extremely child oriented and well, I have no children. If I wanted to sit on Santa's lap or make a craft, or bounce around on a trampoline - I'd go - but I think I'd rather just skip all of that fun.;):p

Shadowpup - I was reading about the Blind Side family - the Touhy's - I think. They adopted Michael Oher - when he was homeless and alone - and I thought of you. They were amazed at how much they learned and received from the experience - and encouraged others to open up their lives and to give. This could be a blessing in disguise.

Elle - glad your work situation improved. There have been some co workers here that have left that I wasn't sorry to see go. That's the way it is usually in office atmospheres - it some times is a struggle when there is a personality confict.

Hello out there to Janie - are you home yet? Keeping cool?

Ok - back to work - have so much to do!!!

Hi!

Yesterday I did the whole entire KICKMAX. I am so into kickboxing right now and I must admit it has everything to do with karate. Lots of good conditioning for karate and tomorrow is the big "graduation" to the next belt. I have never done this before, but its a bunch of people all going through the moves that move them onto the next belt. I think it is done both individually and in a group setting. But I honestly don't know for sure. I guess I'll know more once I experience it. Long 2 hour class tonight, and I can't wait!

Today I did the Cardio Blast from BodyMax 2! Wow, I love that one. By the time I'm done, I look like I just got out of a swimming pool. I had to change and now I'm getting ready to do more 1 RM's. Just thought I'd take a short break and check in.

ttfn

Not much activity on our little check in :( - it must be the summer.:D Hope everyone is having a busy and wonderful time this year. Well this evening I will be off to the Outer Banks on vacation - and I won't be able to check in - no internet access at the beach - well, I suppose there is somewhere??? I have already packed up Travel Fit to take with me!!! I'm also taking my running shoes - I tried running last year and just couldn't - my back was in deplorable shape and couldn't take the pounding and it was soooo HOT - even in the morning.

Last night I did :eek::eek: Christi Taylor yet again!! - I know nearly every other day this week I'm doing a step workout with Christi - I dare say - it is a phase of mine. Well - I did Solid Gold Step - and had a blast - she just complicates the hell out her combinations and the time just literally flies by. Some workouts I'm watching the clock big time - not with her - it doesn't even seem like I'm working out. I'm looking around and thinking - I need more Christi - I do wish she was still making workouts.

Last night I also gardened - I have been a gardening fiend - and I'm loving the looks of it all right now that I seriously don't want to leave it behind. I love walking around and just looking at it - and doing a bit of weeding. DH is tight lipped with the compliments though - I brought him out to look at the bed I finished shaping and cleaning out - and he said something like - you managed to throw dirt in with all the mulch we just put down. :p:mad: Oh well - Men!! Rex is not accompanying me to the beach - so I'll be missing him and my girls and my check in!!!

Hello to Janie, Michelle, Shadowpup, Laura, Renee & Elle!!! I'll check in as soon as I get back!;)
