Getting Our Licks In!

I just did Kick Max, which I haven' done in a very long time, and it really kicked my @ss!! Those drills and then those leg drills were killer!! I never made up that leg workout but after those leg drills they feel really worked and my butt was sore from KPC yesterday! I have been missing the cardio so it was nice to focus on it this week. BTW has anyone done any of the premixes on Kick Max and if so what did you thinK?

I am not sure what I will do for weights this week, maybe I will jump into Meso 2 and do one week of that before my holiday begins, or maybe GS since I am enjoying these other Cathe's or maybe just one more week of the last week of Meso 1.

Shadowpup: thanks, all these years of driving up my snowy road payed off! And now by the sounds of it all that hard work you put in last fall is paying off! Enjoy the flowers of you labor and post some photos when you get a chance.

Janie: Is spring rainy for you? What are you doing now that your done with that rotation.

Michelle: Aw spring in the south is so beautiful! I am finding all my pants are to big as well! I can wear them but they are baggy and don't look that great practically falling off my waist! Got to love that feeling! Happy shopping!

Today was oddly ... normal. We went to a community group brunch, and had an enjoyable time socializing. What I had was pretty yummy! Omlets made to order. The cook explained to me how learned to flip them (it involves a piece of bread and lots of practice). Bought hand-made glass arrowheads at an auction. They are very pretty, made from recycled ashtrash glass, by hand. I was a bit restless when we arrived and I had no work to do so I ended up assigning myself a job organizing the nametags, and helping with the auction. Came home, did a few indoor jobs, fed the horses, worked out to Cardio Core Express because I was feeling a little full from brunch  And now pizza is in the oven!

Laura, have to say, it's been a long time since I've done KickMax! It used to be a favorite, too. How are the girls after their scare? At that age they probably shrug things off pretty fast. Any of those workouts sound good ... Definitely do need to post some bulb pics and I meant to take them today, but it was rainy. Poor horses, no riding.

Michelle, oooh, purple magnolias ... wow! I bet it is gorgeous. You deserve a wonderful spring, after this harsh winter. Congrats on not having any shorts :D It is a nice, albeit frustrating feeling, isn't it :D

Janie, did you take a rest day? I think it's been awhile since you've had one ... wishing you blue skies this week.

Hi to Shoegal and Renee!

Edited later to add:
Did you see that there is an adults version of the Presidential Challenge? http://www.presidentschallenge.org/the_challenge/index.aspx
Is anyone interested in joining as a team ... ?

I only walked around today. No biggy.

Michelle, You did good with your workouts.:)

Spring cleaning are you? Good to have the old hot tub ready when needed.

Congratulations for being smaller. :D I know you worked hard for it.

I'm glad your magnolia bush is blooming. Things are starting to peak through the ground here as well.

Laura, I like Kick Max, but never did the premixes yet. You did a great on that workout.

I'm doing an active week this week, well, kinda. Doing something every now and then. Not gaining any weight that's the main thing.

Deborah, Sounds like you had an interesting day. I love glass especially when people make things out of it. I bet the arrows were beautiful. That was nice of you to volunteer your time organizing nametags and helping out. Love Cardio Core Express. It's a great workout, I bet you had fun with it.

We had blue skies today, then rain again. Oh well.

Janie

Hello Everyone!!

Laura - glad you are safe -Whew!! What an experience - I can't imagine what you were going through - a plow, cars everywhere - sliding down a hill - God was certainly on your side - and you have all that snow driving experience. I would have had a couple cocktails too!!

Shadowpup - I definitely want to see bulb pictures - we have a couple daffodils coming up - haven't seen too much of the tulips - but I have not replanted in years - and I suspect they are on their way out! Did some gardening myself this weekend. There is a plow (yes, you read that right) in the flower bed in the front that DH and I yanked out. I told him it was my garden now and I don't want that in there anymore. I agree with the term "gloomy urban" to describe Jari's set. Bleh!! I think it affects my mood to be honest.

Michelle - you were cleaning up outside too - we had fabulouse weather as well. We let Hobi run around all day - sometimes with a long lead, then we eventually just took it off and let him run. He was super good!!! It was fun to watch him run with the girls and see his playful side come out. I think he is adapting and allowing more of his personality to emerge. He is such a good boy.

Janie - Sounds as if you had a rather relaxing weekend. Yeah, it sounds like nice weather for a walk for sure!!! I'm sure whatever workouts you choose this week will be fun for you after coming off of that touch rotation. I'm not sure what I'll do this evening but I know I want it to be hard!!!

Okay - gotta go get the day started. :)

This morning was week 2 with Plyo Legs. It wasn't as bad as last week, maybe because I was mentally prepared for a kick butt workout. Here it is noon and I'm already feeling the muscle soreness in the legs. You've got to love it.

Laura: Kick Max is one of my favorites. It definitely kicks the bootie. I haven't done it in a while and I have done some of the premixes, usually the one that has the KB drills and the leg drills.

Deborah: you sound like a restless soul sometimes. It seems like you like to be doing something most of the time. What kind of pizza did you bake? Homemade? Yummy. Cardio core express--I think that is on the rotation with Step Moves this week.

Janie: when do we start the count down to your cruise? Have you got all those new bathing suits ready to go?

Shoegal: Ripken is loving the spring weather too, although his allergies are kicking in. I guess it's time to start giving him a benadryl. It sounds like Hobie hasn't missed a beat in his new surroundings and is simply loving life.

I wish you all could see Virginia: the daffodils, crocus, and hyacinths are in full bloom. The bradford pears are starting to bloom and the cherry blossoms are getting serious about starting to bloom. Many of the trees are blooming, mostly the maples. Spring color is everywhere.

~michelle

Oops--I missed sister on my last post. Hi sister! Tell me what you think of the last weight exercise on plyo legs, forward lunge with the kick. Those really get my glutes.
~sister/michelle

Did Step Moves today. Yeah! This one is so much fun.

Shoegal, Today is another nice day, am thinking about getting out there. Maybe to clean up the garden. Won't have to much of one this year. Will be traveling when everything is ready for harvest.

What hard workout did you decide to do?

Michelle, You know you did a good job when the muscles already ache from a just finished workout. Very good!

April 18th I will be at the airport and in the plane at 8:45 pm. I Can't Wait! So excited! I have gotten bathing suits from the 2nd hand stores and one from Spiegel. I have 4:eek:. Got carried away as I usually do. All fit so nice, I am going to have fun near that pool. Gray hair and all.LOL

Virginia sounds so beautiful this time of year. We are still seeing things come up from the earth. It's so nice that Spring is here.

I am totally pooped from my 3 classes! I will be back tomorrow to catch up, but just wanted to check in super duper quick

Night Ya'll

Yet another post about a fabulous step workout!!!! Skip this if you are tired of me raving about how much fun I had. I was so energized and excited about my step workout last night I almost screamed after I finished. I didn't, though, I didn't want to scare Hobi who was there in my room with me. I actually went back and did the last 4 combinations again because it was that much fun. I was stepping with Christi Taylor yet again - this time "Still Steppin" which I had never done before - and found while I was rummaging around looking for a good workout to do. I got all the combinations fairly well - which helped to motivate me further. Oh my - what a blast!!!

Well - there was a bit of storm last night - and Hobi had crawled up onto my couch - laid his head upon me and I covered him up with a blanket - he was shaking a bit - but otherwise seemed to be handling the storm quite well. I had hoped the worst of it was over when I got up to go to bed. He came with me - jumped up onto the bed and proceeded to pant and get up and down and make a general nuisance out of himself. He was not happy. Hobi has a history of not liking thunderstorms and of some anxious behavior so we were kind of expecting he wouldn't be happy. Finally Rex gave him a perscribed tranquilizer and he settled in and seemed to sleep all night.

Michelle - do you do the plyo legs instead of the leg workouts? How does that work? I would love to see Virginia in the spring - there is something so exciting about seeing things grow. I was looking about the yard and saw the signs of spring everywhere - but we have nowhere near the growth you have now.

Laura - Well - three classes will tucker you out - tell us what you've been up to!!

Janie - Step Moves - that is one that will keep you coming back. I like its length - and it is a lot of fun too!! Good job. DH and I were talking about a cruise for vacation this year. I want to go somewhere warm though -Rex doesn't like it hot. We'll have to meet somewhere in the middle.

Shadowpup - haven't yet looked at the Presidental Challenge yet - but sounds interesting - maybe I'll have some take today to take a look.

Hello to Renee - must be having another busy week.

Ok - off to have some breakfast!

Good morning all! It was a typical Monday working from home - lots of busy administrative things that came up over the weekend, all kinds of fun work too including paper deadlines , and probably just as well that the skies were dripping water all over us, or I'd've had trouble getting everything done!

Feel free to skip over the next - it is my time management accountability post and probably boring ...

But getting everything done is getting closer and closer, with my goal-based time management now. It isn't that there is any less to do. It isn't even that I'm finishing more (though I suspect I am). It is that I am setting far more realistic targets for my day, which reduces my self-imposed stress, which makes it easier to get into a flow state on the 'right' projects ... . I've been spending fifteen minutes each morning looking over at my personal and professional goals with my Single Step software, writing out my top ten goals overall. After that I use my 2Do gadget to list a few highlights based on the goals. And then I go to my inbox, spend an hou. All that goal work sounds tedious, but it takes maybe an extra fifteen minutes in the morning, and really makes me feel better about why I'm including or excluding a task. I've been consistent with this for over three weeks now :D

The administrative extras that came up are an example of where things are going better. I had my list of what I wanted to do, and discovered another two-ish hours of must-do's in the inbox. As usual. But this time I'd planned for it, and by the end of the day, found that I'd finished all but one (half hour's worth) of goal-oriented tasks plus the extras, and had only felt mildly strained. And as a result, I had a better evening on the personal side, slept better, and am awak earlier this morning. I know not every day is going to go as well as this but it is nice to see progress.

Back to personals and fitness...

Anyway, as a result of all of that, I had a great workout with STS last night, Meso 2, disk 16 chest/shoulder/triceps, and did my foam roller work in advance. I've been reading Cressey's book Maximum Strength, and he strongly urges foam roller/mobility work before strength training. What's neat is that Cathe's warmup has much of the 'prehab' (I do not like that word but it s what people use) that he recommends, so really all I needed to add is the foam roller. Have to say, my back has never felt better than these weeks when I do foam rolling and my TRX! On the STS, it went really well except for one set of chest exercises. I must have put in a typo when I adjusted my 1RMS, because the weight was really out of line with anything I'd done before!!! Normally my flies and chest presses on incline and flat are within a few pounds, but the workout card wanted me to bump up eight per arm - 38 pounds x2. That was way to much; I tried it, failed on about four, felt warning quivers up and down the arm, and used what the card had for flat presses and shoulders, which is 32 (x2 dumbbells). That worked out fine.

Shoegal, it's fun to read about Hobi. I went through your earlier posts, and he just sounds like a wonderful dog who had some hard breaks earlier, and has now lucked into a terrific situation. Is he a foster dog ... or an adoptee ... ? Thunderstorms scare our lab and one of the border collies; the other one thinks his job is to chase them away! Poor Hobi. Let me know what you think about the Pres challenge. We could have a Getting Our Licks In team if enough of us want to, but it is another place to go record workouts, which might be a bit much. And I love hearing about Step! It is inspiring me to keep my step workouts. There is no space to do them now, but perhaps by summer I'll be asking you to recommend something that is easy for the choreographically challenged, and tough enough to be a real workout. You make it sound like such fun :D

Laura, not surprised you are exhausted after three classes!!! Glad you posted anyway :) And aren't your holidays starting up about now - is that this weekend, or this week?

Janie, you are so consistent. After that tough rotation, seems like you gave yourself just a few break days and you're now back in the thick of it. And of course you need all those suits! Who knows which one you will want to wear??? Personally I think you're going to be a real inspiration out by the pool. Knock 'em dead, that's my position :D

Michelle, did you end up going with the plyo legs? Sounds like you are really doing well with Meso 3... Pizza was a combined veggie with some leftover breakfast sausage and chicken. It was definitely yummy! And you are right about the restlessness. I do relax and enjoy ... but it tends to be around animals and plants. Or when working. They finally had to give me a real light switch at work, because the motion detector isn't sensitive enough to catch my fingers typing and nothing else moves when I get into flow!

Hi to Renee! If you did Legs, that must mean you are feeling fine and just busy with the school week :)

And Ironlady, come back and say hello when you get a chance. We are wondering if you've recovered?

Today I'm really feeling that spot right at the bottom of your butt bone--I think it's called the sitz bone--probably because that is what you sit on, I guess. Anyway, that's where I'm feeling the plyo legs workout from yesterday. Today was MMA Kickbox which is just a fun cardio workout and a great core segment at the end. Shoegal/Laura: when you get to meso 3, you are supposed to pick either plyo legs or the squat rack workouts for your weekly leg workout. Sister and I have opted to do the plyo legs during meso 3 so the squat rack workouts will wait.

Janie: 4 bathing suits sounds good. Remember, I'm the one with 3 drawers+ full of bathing suits, so as far as I'm concerned limiting yourself to only 4 bathing suits showed great restraint on your part. Love step moves--I'm thinking of doing that this Thursday rather than cardio core circuits. Depends on my energy level.

Shoegal: I think that Hobi's dislike of thunderstorms is not unusual for canines. Ripken isn't fond of thunderstorms either. DH said we had a brief storm at home yesterday and Ripken catapulted off his bed in the foyer and came running in the kitchen, plopping his butt as close to DH as he could get. Funny thing is that he wasn't bothered by thunderstorms as a pup, but the skittishness has developed over the past 3 years or so. It's great that you are so energetic about your step workouts. Enthusiasm after a workout is a good sign if you ask me. We all need to do a little healthy screaming every once in a while.

Shadowpup: boy, you lift some majorly heavy weights. You're fitness level is a great source of inspiration. How long have you been doing the weightlifting? Before you had cancer or just afterwards? Just amazing. High-5s to you!

Laura: 3 workouts, sounds good to me. Catch your breath, we'll be here when you get back again.

Just spent sometime catching up on the posts! Looks like everyone is doing well! We really are a motivated and committed bunch! :D I like the idea of doing the Presidential Challenge, as we workout already! It could be kind of fun, I clicked on the link but didn't look into the details yet!

I am so sore in my chest and biceps from my classes yesterday. I did a lot of band work in my first class, some leg conditioning drills and plank work with sliding plates in the second (both of course had lots of core as well) and did an Upper Body Superset Pyramid style workout in my last class. I totally feel it today. I taught my beginner Pilates class this morning, with a little band, lots of stretching and some basic pilates exercises. Then I did Disc 12 Meso Cycle 1 Legs. I decided to get the legs over with earlier in the week as starting Monday I will be a skiing fool! I also decided to stay with Meso 1 for this last week before my break, just to be consistent...

Two weeks is going to be a long break, but I definitely felt better today after taking 'off' last week. My friend laughed at me when I told her I was taking a week off of exercising as I taught 6 classes and skied for over 2 hours one day and did two additional KB workouts!! But I meant from lifting/STS....other than my Weight lifting class and weight bearing exercises I did not lift any weights at all!

IT IS DUMPING SNOW BY THE WAY YAHHOOO!!! LUCKILY I PICKED THE GIRLS UP EARLY FROM SCHOOL SO WE ARE ALL SAFE AT HOME AND IT MAY SEEM STRANGE THAT I AM EXCITED FOR SNOW AFTER LAST FRIDAY!! BUT MY BIG BRO IS COMING TO SKI AND THIS IS GOING TO MAKE OUR SKI TRIP!!

I'm game for the President's Challenge--sounds like Laura is leaning toward a yes. So we just need Shoegal, Janie, and sister to weigh in and we'll have the whole Getting Our Licks In Team!
~michelle

Great!!! I went ahead and set up a President's Challenge team for us. It is a private team, though we can open it up later to everyone if we wish. The name is (of course)

Name: Getting Our Licks In!
Number: 89874

The instructions said that we'd each need an individual id number, but I wasn't asked for one when I signed myself in. However, if we do end up needing numbers - I propose that Janie be Number One because she brought us together; Shoegal be Number Two because that is the number of shoes one puts on; Laura number three - three is the most balanced number of legs on a stool, and Laura, you just seem to have the greatest balanced life with your three areas of work, family, and activities ... ; Renee our Number Four to match the paws on a kitty, and doesn't fourrrr sound like purrrr?; Michelle - of course Number Five for the Pentagon, what else???? and Six, myself, because six sides is a hexagon and that is an especially neat and useful concept in computing lingo :)

You can join here, and start logging activities, if you wish:

http://www.PresidentsChallenge.org/login/register_individual.aspx

MMA Fusion today. It was great!

Shoegal, Nice to know another person who loves step like that. I just love it too! Crazy isn't it? Love the music, the beat, and the moves. All good! I have to admit, I don't get excited after it's done, it's doing it when I'm all fired up.:D Love the way you push yourself through and enjoy every minute and beyond.;) Can't hardly beat Christi.

Let us know where you will be cruising when you figure it out. :)

Poor Hobi, it must have been so scary. Glad you had a tranquilizer for him.

Deborah, Sounds like your time management is doing you a world of good. Proud of ya.

Oh, I forget about the foam roller. It hurts soooooo good! But worth it afterwords. I've done lots of stretches before a workout, I must try the roller before a workout. Sounds like a good idea.

Very impressive with the poundage that you used. Good going.

Not totally in the thick of exercising yet, I have still one more week of active recovery. I need that long to recuperate.

I hope to inspire anyone, but really, I'm there to have a great time and not feel self conscious. You are too kind.;)

Michelle, I see you and your sis are consistently working out. That's key, I know you know this.

Every time I went to the store I looked at bathing suits. I was obsessed I tell you. I went shopping for flour today and round up in the bathing section. This is the time to buy a suit. Perfect timing.

Laura, That band work gets me every time. Doing really good on the exercises I see.;) Ejoy the snow with your brother. How Fun!

Michelle, I'm up for any challenge. Wait, what did I get myself into this time? I better see what the President's Challenge is. LOL I know Shadowpup suggested this, but I was in a big hurry when I skimmed through it and haven't really read all of it. But, count me in anyway.

Deborah, Looking forward to this! I'm not too sure what to do. Just enter, is that right? Or will you enter us as a team?

Hello All -

Last night I did some 1RM testing - more lower body work. I find that I have a hard time choosing the appropriate weight that I can lift 10 reps with and then I can't do anymore. I usually end up being able to lift 10 more than that - and then I think - I need to retest to get an accurate number - but I can't do it then because I have already tired out that muscle. :p:rolleyes: It just proves I'm stronger than I think I am - and I do need help in choosing the right amounts. Well - I thought of the words from the people of this forum - do the best you can. So - I was doing the best that I could - will do more of that on Thursday. I didn't test for 1 or 2 star exercises - I'm doing the 3 to 5 star exercises.

Last night when we came home Hobi ran around and around and around - and played a bit with our girls and it really served to tucker him out. He seemed more playful than he's been and it is so good to see. We just obtained his vet records and it seems as if he has been on ACE for some time for storm anxiety and another drug for seperation anxiety. He came with a perscription of Prozac -but we haven't determined to what extent he has been on that. There was a period of 2 to 3 years it seemed like a regular thing - but it was stopped - and just restarted again right before he came to us. We are still working on solving his perscription needs but I am wary of all these drugs to be honest.

Michelle - Indy was always afraid of storms - more of the Ripken variety when she would sit right up against you and stay there. Nothing major - it was more cute than anything. Hobi has a little more anxiety - more vocal - huffs and puffs.

Janie - I have a drawer full of bathing suits as well - I can't really say how many but probably not anywhere near Michelle's number. Not my favorite thing to shop for to be honest - so I like to hold onto mine for awhile. If I run into something I like I'll buy it but I really don't actively search for one. With 4 - I think you are all set up and it should be a nice variety to get you through the cruise. We were looking to go to the Caribbean - haven't nailed it down yet though.

Shadowpup - I'm on board with the challenge - I loved how you reasoned out the numbers for our group - very scientific :D. I clicked on the link but didn't go into it - still need to do that. Motivating for sure when you see progress in your time management goals - good job!!

Laura - I'm with you on the snow - I think getting a lot of it is fun - like an event. I'm glad conditions will be just right when your brother comes for a visit. You are active for sure - when is the last time you did absolutely nothing for an entire week??? I don't think that is possible exercise wise.

Ok - off I go - hope everyone enjoys their day. Sunny here in Pittsburgh!!

Haven't done my cardio yet. Don't know which one to choose.

Shoegal, I agree with you. When you can do more than 10 reps the exercise calls for, and still can do even more, you need a heavier weight. I had to retest a lot of my 1RM too.

I'm weary of all those drugs for the pup too. I've never heard of so many drugs for one doggie. I have a book called Natural Health for Dogs & Cats by Dr. Richard H. Pitcairn, D.V.M. I use these recipes for my animals and they love it. It may take awhile for an animal to get use to this diet, but once they are on it, they are very healthy. (When Molly died, I wondered about her diet and all the pet food I was feeding her. I started her on this way of eating months before she died. I think she lived longer and healthier because of it.) Just a suggestion instead of dog food from the store. I feed this to my two cats now, and they are more energetic, great looking fur, seem brighter and happier. I'm very suspicious when it comes to drugs like that. IMO, I think the sooner you get him off the drugs the better he will be. But, I'm not a vet, it just doesn't sound right.

The Caribbean sounds lovely.

Janie

I'm having an incredibly high mood day. Must be the workouts and the weather. This morning was STS disc 30, shoulders, biceps, and triceps. I'm really loving meso 3--maybe its the lower number of reps each week;), maybe it's the higher weight amounts, or a little of both.

Janie: how about a little step blast? Just a suggestion. It was the first workout that came to mind.

Shoegal: I have to admit that I am not the purchaser of all my swimsuits. My husband orders them from Venus Swimwear and Victoria Secret. We have exchanged many on sizes and sent many back. I doubt I would have as many as I do if I was the purchaser. Not sure about all those meds for Hobi. Seems like alot to me. Plus, I believe in unconditional love as a means for encouraging good behavior. I hope you all find that you can ween Hobi off much of the meds. And yes, Ripken is a huffer and a puffer when the thunderstorms get going. But it all passes and then he is happy again. Glad to hear that you are plugging away at the 1RMs.

Shadowpup: thanks for setting us up for the president's challenge. Sounds like another fun way to keep track of our exercise. We are going to kick butt!

Sister: big woohoo! Week 2 of meso 3 is just about over. I'm feeling pretty amazed with myself. The UA power shirts aren't hurting, either.;)

Laura: sounds like ya'll are still getting snow? Is this true? Have fun skiing.

~michelle

Hi everyone!
Had a lovely snow day at home, pretty lazy actually. It was a cardio day, so I decided to do a work out I haven't done yet, a P90 Masters series workout called Sweat 5-6. It had some stretching, a little yoga, a little plyo and a little Kickboxing all in 48 minutes. I found it light on the cardio, even though I did break a sweat, so I decided to do P90X Kenpo as well. I was pretty tired by the end of it all. My legs, hamstrings to be precise, were really tight from Meso 1 Legs yesterday. I find the Meso 1 legs really gets my hamstrings, but not in a DOM kind of way but in a super tight kind of way.

So it sounds like we are up for the Presidential Challenge! COOL! I will look into that tomorrow, Shadowpup you are funny I love how you spent the time to consider our #'s and came up with good reasons for our #.

Janey: love MMA Fusion! I need to do that one again soon! I have heard of that book from some friends, they swear by it to!

Shoegal! WOO HOO way to go on the 1Rm's!! I found out I was lifting way below my capacity as well and lifting heavier is really giving me the most definition ever! I am sure you will love STS once you start it for real. I don't know about all those drugs for that poor guy either, but I don't think it is good to go cold turkey, so you really need to talk to your vet. It has been awhile since I did absolutely no exercise for a week, I think last dec. when I was sick I took 4 days...does that count?

Michelle: that rocks that you felt so good today! You always seemed to like slow and heavy so I am not surprised you are enjoying Meso 3. It seems to be a favorite of a lot of folks, I am ready to move on from Meso 1 that is for sure!
