Economic Crisis

*white flag* May I humbly suggest something?

I agree that namecalling is unacceptable. We should be able to discuss issues without insulting one another. Honestly, I find that a forum like this is often the only place I can discuss such issues, as others often shy away due to the sensitive nature of politics, religion, etc. (Shame, as those are some of my favorite topics!)

In disagreeing with Carola or anyone else, I wouldn't have posted the way Baylian did...true. But you guys have said your piece, and Carola is certainly more than capable of standing up for herself ;) . Can we keep this from getting nastier though?

I only ask because I know Baylian is going through a rough time right now. Her father is dying, and she may not be totally herself at this point. Maybe she and Carola will get along better in the future, maybe not. But let's consider giving it a rest and giving her a chance.

At the very least, you guys will be excellent examples of wisdom and compassion. :) <3

Note: I'm not telling anyone to shut up ~ like Carola once said, I'm not the forum police (and furthermore, I wouldn't say "shut up"). It's only a suggestion, as it pains me to see a poster really catch hell (well deserved or not) when I know he or she is suffering personally.

Thanks, guys. :) Have a great weekend.

Hey Sirensong

Just a thought here - but if I'm not mistaken retirement accounts are sheltered in a bankruptsy filing. I don't know if only certain kinds of retirement accounts qualify, or if it's for only certain types of filings, but I would ask the attny about it. If that's the case, and you decide to file, then you shouldn't touch that retirement account, b/c you'll still have that even after the bankruptsy.

I hope this helps and I hope everything works out for you. (((hugs)))

Oh my gosh, you guys like me, you really, really like me :D Kidding :p But seriously, thanks for your support! You guys are awsome!

Having said that I would like to say I was originally offended by Baylian's comments, and thinking that many people are going through a hard time without resorting to harsh language. However after thinking about it again, I can't pretend that I even remotely know how I would react if I would go through the heartache that Baylian is going through right now.

People react in different ways to difficult personal challenges and I hope you join me in keeping Baylian in our thoughts, offer our support and wishing her strength and resolve while she and her family are going through this difficult time.

OMG, this is terrifying. I had no idea it was this bad. I'm still kind of young and don't have money invested in many things and don't have a mortgage so I've been trying to understand and comprehend what all of this means.

The fact that Lehman Brothers survived the Great Depression but have gone under now is the most terrifying part of all of this. This is so much worse than I thought it was.

Yeah, what Allison said.

Jennie,Allison - you've said it, you're young and have grown up in times of unprecedented prosperity....major recession brought on by the Reagan debt was broke brutally by Paul Volker - who I hated at the time - 18 percent interest rates on mortgages -but I sure did save my pennies (which is literally all I had) because money market rates were 18 percent! It cost Bush SR. his presidency - and it paid off in the Clinton years, and began dwindling by the end of his administration as regulation relaxed, standards relaxed, in the trust of the free market.
Ain't so free is it.....wealth corrupts, and what keeps the middle class, middle class is the work ethic that simply won't allow most people to aspire to the zenith of management because they simply won't exploit those under them...exceptions are Bill Gates, Ben and Jerry, I'm sure there are others (please God, I hope so!)...

The SEC and and the overseers who've kind of sat back and let the gladiators of finance rape and pillage the credit market - taking advantage of people's dreams and hopes and faith that they wouldn't be given a mortgage if they weren't going to be able to pay for it....the pay back time is here and they are stepping in.

The pendulum is swinging back and the next decade will likely be one of escalating regulation and control by overseers in every sector...bummer if you're earning over 1 mill a year in perks.....not salary...perks......relief to the rest of us who are suffering 200 dollars to buy STS...

Siren - bankruptsy - it follows you....I know they say 7 years, but I've seen as long as 10 (or IS the rule now 10?) from patients I've had who've worked hard to re-establish themselves....ruined by co-pays for leukemia - I kid you not - they lost everything for treatment....and it still is following them - 2 teachers...you're doing the right thing to ask around though.....

Pretty handy with those acrostic messages, aren't ya? :D Now I know who to PM when my daughters need to come up with one for an assignment.

We've all been dealing with life all day and then coming back to this. Carola wrote an incredibly warm, thoughful message to you and this is how you respond? I don't understand. This thread got way out of control and I'm so disappointed in the path it took. I hope we all can have a little more respect for each other in the future.

It's been a tough year for me too losing a 17 year old niece to cancer and having a mother has been ill....I can't speak for what someone else is going through but it saps my already limited energy to have such a negative view of the world.
These forums have changed and I don't check in much any more because of things like this. Maybe some of you open minded newbies will take a stab at a Cardio Coach Press Play (CCPP) and you will know what I am talking about when it comes to a positive outlook. Hopefully it will inspire you all as much as it has me :D Enough blathering....Cheerio!

IT'S BEAVS!!!!! Good to see you, girl!!!!

You know, one of the things that I have always admired about you is how you took all those challenges that life has dealt you and got through it without losing your sense of humor and still keeping a positive and compassionate attitude. YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!

Come back here!!! We all miss you!

And I know this will come as a shocker to all of you, I second the CCPP suggestion and CC in general.

Just a quick note, we DID file bankruptcy 14 years ago and we DID recover. It was hard, but we also learned alot from it. I now have my doctorate degree (and thank God a good job), 3 children, and a nice home. Bankruptcy is tough and 10 years is a long time....not not eternal. I don't regret my decision, it was what we needed to do at the time---and it was a HUGE relief. We tried credit counseling, but could not even afford those meek payments (although they were wonderful for fighting with CC companies to get interest down to 0%). We were able to keep our house and our car through bankruptcy.

Hang in there. :)

Side note: I'm really suprised that Cathe's moderators haven't pulled this post. I remember a Grey's Anatomy post that was pulled after getting just a slight bit steamy! ;)

Since I started this thread and the responses have been so helpful I hope it's not pulled. There was really only one negative source and I think we all understand she's hurting and sad, which I think everyone here is respectful of, I hope. I think everything's okay now.

But, that's the same thing our enemy thinks. Maybe God will answer THEIR prayers instead of ours.

I'm staying away from this discussion - for a change - but I wanted to cosign TeTe's post and say I love your quote!

Not trying to bring this thread back, but it has taken me many days to read through it all, but I have learned quite a bit. I get nervous about my family's financial future and have much information now to think about.

Thank you SirenSongWoman for your honesty and transparency in your hard situation!
