Don't pump gas on May 15th!

Dare I say I love this word:
"mollycoddled"
Now I'm going to gas up my hummer. I'm all for sucking the world's gas supply dry so that we can finally address the alternatives since our politicians (of which there is never a shortage) have no interest. Of course in the meantime that might mean a worldwide depression, a war with China and whoever else we can think of. Hopefully Country Joe will be around to write another anthem "1-2-3-4 what are we fighting for??"

Here's a horror story. My giant SUV saved my life. I was a few miles from my kid's school to pick them up, I was on the access road parallel to the interstate. A drunk driver swerved off the interstate, came onto the service road and hit me. He was airborn when he hit. I was driving a Toyota Landcruiser, a huge hunk of metal. My car was totaled but I walked away. He went away in the back of the police car. Thank god it was BEFORE I picked up my kids.

OMG!

It just goes to show you, BE CAREFUL everyone! Wow, someone was looking after your family.

I'm so glad you are OK.

Janie

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

I have always told my DH that my dream car is a hummer! Don't throw stuff at me! He said the same stuff y'all are saying so I told him that we could get him a Prius to balance it all out! Ummm. He didn't like that idea very much!

My wedding anniversary is May 15th, so I'll be able to remember this!

You know, if my office would allow a relaxed dress code for those who ride their bikes, I'd ride instead of drive. I don't live far from the office, and the local biking/walking trail runs right by my office (and is close enough to my home to access fairly easily). But if I'm expected to be dressed in nice clothes every day, no-can-do on the bike ride. We don't have a shower at the office, and dressy clothes won't travel well in a backpack when I'll have to pack my lunch in there, too.

My husband bikes three days a week to work. The trip one way is a little over 16 miles. 8 miles are on the greenbelt next to the river going through our city. He says he has the most beautiful commute he could hope for. His company provides a locker and showers for bike commutors. Wouldn't that be a help to the environment if all companies were accomidating.

I ride my motorcycle to work most of the time. When Diane Sue and I go out we will also take the Motorcycle when possible.

The one day thing is a statement, but will not affect the big oil companies. People that would have got gas on May 15th will get it on the 14th or 16th instead, with unfortunately no effect to the big oil companies at all....

I agree with Bill that it will most likely have no impact on the oil companies. However, just wanted to point out to everyone that this particular "no gas day" isn't a hoax. There have been a lot of hoax e-mails in the past few years urging you not to gas up on a certain day, but this particular no gas day has been advertised on both the radio and local news stations this week. I think it is probably legit, but still useless.

Don't be so quick to hate on the oil companies, they are just businesses that do what they do and go through ups and downs. Most oil companies are just in the production aspect of the business and don't go as far as refining and distribution, and get a fair market value for their product. Remember, crude oil is a worldwide commodity and price is dictated by supply and demand. Good link to learn about gasoline prices:

They're opportunists like everyone else in business. This "don't pump gas" thing won't do much. Until the alternatives are seriously addressed, the opportunists will continue to fill their pockets as much as market conditions allow.

I don't know how strong of a message not pumping gas on one day would send, since most people would just fill up the day before or after if they needed to.

What would make a more visible impact would be for everyone to NOT DRIVE on May 15. Walk, bike, take mass transit, roller skate, pogo, anything but using a gas-powered vehicle.

Kathryn,
I'll be cruising to work on my broom that day ;-)
I would like to try the pogo.....

It's hard to NOT hate the gas companies when they are getting record profits in the BILLIONS, and we are paying more and more everyday!

If there was any practical way for me to not drive on May 15, I would totally do it. But roller skating 20 miles to work, and 20 miles back... well... that would subject me to an awful lot of pointing and laughing. ;)

I could get on board with Beavs' broomstick idea, but my Nimbus 2001 is in the shop right now. *sigh*

For one thing if a "gas out" hit anyone's pockets it would be the gas stations not the oil companies because the gas stations have already purched the gas. Another thing is if it did affect the oil companies they would just raise the prices again to compensate for their loss. Everytime a refinery catches on fire or an oil pipeline leaks they raise the gas prices to compensate for it. I don't know any other business that gets to raise their prices, and everyone is forced to pay that price, when their company suffers a loss.

The hybrid cars are a great idea, if only they were affordable. I'm sure in the future they will be, but right now they're pretty expensive. Although I suppose not when compared with an SUV.

I don't know about anyone else but public transportation in my area stinks. I live 30 minutes from work and if I went to the park and ride I would still look at a two hour commute time with numerous bus changes. I would also have to leave for work later as the buses are not running in my area at 5:30 in the am when I head to work. I'll keep doing what I can in the meantime.....
BTW, my broom is all pimped out and I have a bumpin' sound system. I'll swing by and take Kathryn and Evily on a cruise. If you're nice I'll even take you out for a vegan lunch ;-)

Did someone say vegan lunch??? *dons witches hat and robes and waits for Beavs to show up*

I don't even have the option of public transportation. I live out in the sticks, where there are no buses or subways or park-n-ride or anything. I suppose maybe I could hitch a ride on some farmer's John Deere harvester... but showing up to work at Caterpillar on a John Deere tractor would probably get me fired. :p

I just wanted to chime in to say that Chevy is coming out with a hybrid version of the Tahoe/Yukon next year. Hopefully that means the same for the Suburban/Yukon XL soon. They already come standard with an engine that will run on E85 and systematically reduces the number of cylinders used as much as possible, which saves on fuel consumption. I'm trying to decide how long I want to wait to replace my 'Burb. I like the idea of a true hybrid, but I'm not sure I want to get one of the first ones made.

Oh, and on Sheryl Crow - you gotta see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGqMDBhNVts

On a final note - I am really encouraged that this is still a civil discussion. I've been a little worried by the turn some threads have taken lately. Nice to see everyone playing nice, even when they disagree!
