Does Anyone Else Despise Artificial Sweetners?

Ugh...I just cannot make myself like these things. I cannot drink diet pop because of the aftertaste and today I tried Dannon Low Carb yogurt with Splenda...YUCKERS! I choked down half of it and threw the rest in the garbage. I'm not a sugar junkie so that isn't the issue here...I'm just trying to avoid foods (like yogurt) that have sugar added in so when I saw this low carb/low sugar yogurt I was excited. Crimony, I guess I need to get my own cow and make my own sugar free yogurt...minus the artificial sweetners too!

But I seem to be the only one on the planet who hasn't succombed to the world of sugar substitutes. I absolutely find them unpalatable. Does anyone else have this same aversion as me?

No, I'm right there with you.. I hate the taste of artificial sweetners!
I tend to think that even though we WANT to eat well and avoid the foods that are obviously bad for us we also have to live.. any food you are going to eat shouldn't be "struggled" through.. that is a horrible concept!
This may or may not help you but here in Australia there are independant yoghurt makers who produce yohgurts that are made with only natural/real products. Often also sugar free and sweetened with fruit or honey. They are set in the tub that you buy in the supermarket and don't contain extra thickeners like gelatin (or halal gelatin, which I often see on yoghurts like Yoplait or Dannone here)

Maybe there is a product in your own supermarket that is similar?
There may be something closeby that you may have never thought to try before.
Good luck,
Kelly :)

I'm with you as well! I don't like artificial sweeteners at all- diet soda, in my tea, yogurt, whatever. My favorite yogurt brand is Horizon Organic, and as Kelly suggested, this one has only natural and no added sugars. Very good flavors, fruit on the bottom and blended, about 130 calories each container.

I am so with you on that!! the only artificial sweetner I can handle is in Diet coke other than that I hate the taste, I tried the new Dannon low carb yogurt I find it to watery and low on taste. I tried getting a bag of splenda to use in coffee and I hated the taste of my coffee after that.

I don't trust them! I will take sugar over an AS anyday. 40something, for every flavored yogurt I buy, I get a container of plain, mix the two and divide them. It reduces the added sugar, the overall calories and, to my mind, makes them more palatable if you don't mind a bit of tartness to your yogurt. I like a bit of tartness to my yogurt. :)

I also loathe them and will not eat or purchase any product that contains them, no diet-anything. The simplest way to avoid the sugars in sodas is not to drink soda. Fullstop. Yoghurt is a delicious food but I can't stand most brands because they are over sweetened and the fruit on the bottom stuff for me is just as bad. I only use organic yoghurts by a company in Vermont who use honey to sweeten. Brown Cow? That might be their name.

I can't stand artificial sweetners either. I don't like the taste and I don't trust them either. If I want something a little sweet, I just use a little sugar.

They all taste like salt and chemicals to me. My friend swears that she cannot tell the difference between Diet Coke and real Coke. Everytime I take a taste of her diet to see if I'm crazy, I want to say, "Are you kidding me with this?" I think once you get away from the artificial sweeteners, you can tell. And do we really know what the long term effects are from putting those chemicals in our bodies every day?

I like splenda, I've been using artificially sweetened products long enough that I actually prefer them over sugar. I don't really like any pop but the regular sugared pop just tastes like syrup to me. In fact most sugar sweetened products taste too sweet to me. :) I guess every crowd needs an opposing opinion ;).

I agree. I avoid putting artificial substances in my body (be it a sweetener--even "Splenda," which comes from sugar, but goes through a rather questionable, IMO, processing, fits in that category for me--or a fat substitute like Olestra) and much prefer natural sweeteners like stevia, maple syrup, or even a bit of raw sugar. I think your body recognizes real vs. fake and is not satisfied by the fake stuff. There are also already too many toxic substances around that we are exposed to without being able to do anything about it without adding to that by consuming fake food.

About the flavor of artificial sweeteners: I've read that some people are "tasters," while others are "non-tasters"(with a third group falling in between. To "tasters," some foods taste bitter (like brussle sprouts and artificial sweeteners), while non-tasters don't perceive the same bitterness.

I avoid artifical sweetners. I do not like the after taste. I do occasionly crave a Fresca--I like the grapefruity taste! I am on a no sugar diet, so I occasionaly have a no sugar added ice cream with nutri sweet, I think the breyers is good. I would say I have a artifical sweetner less the 3 times a month.

I LOVE Splenda! It satisfies my sweet tooth and has no after taste.

Supertasters, tasters and nontasters

I wanted to mention this too, Kathryn, when I started reading the thread. It is an amazing difference and relies on one gene. I remember taking a genetics lab in college and they handed out little pieces of paper for us to taste. They warned us beforehand that the "supertasters" would be overwhelmed with a horrible taste, most of us would taste something bitter, and the nontasters would taste nothing at all. It was Mendelian, like hemophilia or sickle cell.

Well, we were all afraid to put the little papers in our mouths and the teaching assistant was enjoying the tension. I bravely put mine in and tasted absolutely nothing, it was paper. Everyone else in the room said "Blaaaaaaah" and one person had to leave the room to the bathroom, her eyes were tearing up. So, that explains why I love brussels sprouts and drink my coffee black, since I am immune to bitterness I guess.

This was 1975 or so.

Since then with all the new genetic research there are new genes for other tastes, but within the past year I've read about "supertasters" and "nontasters" for other bitter or pungent molecules.

I'm grateful to be a non-taster, by the way.

RE: Supertasters, tasters and nontasters

That's interesting stuff about the tasters/non-tasters.

I only like liquid splenda. I can even taste that in most commercially prepared foods...which IMHO are way oversweetened. I buy regular plain unsweetened yogurt from the health food store and add in a touch of liquid splenda (in the form of Davinci Sugar Free Syrups); I end up putting in much less than the manufacturers put in. The only soda I drink is DietRite which also has the liquid splenda in it, but it has to be ice cold or I can taste the aftertaste, which is NOT pleasant.

RE: Supertasters, tasters and nontasters

I don't use any artifical sweeteners. If my kids want soda, I'll buy the regular stuff, if they want cookies, I'll make the cookies with sugar.

Sugar in itself is not bad for you. Natural foods like sugar are a lot less harmful to your health than man-made substitutes.

RE: Supertasters, tasters and nontasters

Just a little sidebar. Don't know if it amounts to anything. I quit drinking Diet Coke altogether this month. It is the first month in 2 years I haven't had a wicked migraine. Could be something else I guess. I am highly suspicous, but very glad!!!!

RE: Supertasters, tasters and nontasters

I'm glad to see everyone's opinion on this. I don't care for the taste although sometimes I'll put a tiny bit of equal in my tea with cinnamon. (it just seems too sweet to put even a half pack or full pack in ...BLECH!) otherwise I drink diet soda once in a while BUT prefer regular coke and regular soda in general- sometimes I get headaches from it and sometimes feel generally sick in the gut from the fake stuff! I don't drink much soda though- I'd say maybe 2 a week but on weekends maybe 3 - depending on how i'm feeling...too much water gets boring especially if we get yummy pizza =0)

>I only like splenda ............ Rhonda

I really like Splenda too. I used to put it in my cereal. But it kept giving me headaches. I was bummed because it really tastes like sugar to me. But every morning I'd wake up with a pounding headache.
I stopped using the Splenda and the headaches went away. Then I started back using it again and I'd wake up with the same headaches. Bizarre!!

:)
