Continuing the Karen Voight Debate ...

My personal opinion, I hate big boobs, onme that is - I am probably considered small - I wear a 34 B - but for the rest of me I am in great porportion. I have a 24" wasit and I 33" hip. I am more than pleased being smaller.

I have ten children, so my boobs of course got huge with each pregnancy, and I absolutley hated it. I felt like a buddha. I couldn't wait to get rid of them. They sagged and were litterally a pain in the back.

I love mine now, I can go without a bra, with no sagging. And with my upper body workouts, I have cleavage. I am never envious when I see a big breasted woman.

And I must add, I was turned off by Karen Voigts tapes once she had her breast enlargement. I felt she caved into society, I like knowing someone got their body toned and looking good from exercise not from surgery.

For some reason, though, I was not turned off to Keli Roberts when she had her surgery - I think maybe it is because she only enhanced herself some not huge, like Karen did.

What kathryn said is right on target. I always thought Karen Voight was nice looking and had a nice body that came from workoing out hard and eatting right, even with the nip and tucks.
I'm wondering though if soon so many women will have implants and other stuff done is when they do stand next to a natural woman with small breasts and no botox or facelift, the natural woman isn't going to look "normal". I think some women think it's not possible to be sexy anymore if they don't have huge beachball like breasts. Like look at Cathe, she is one hot mama and doesn't need any "work" done (or has she?).

Nip/Tuck...new show

I watched the new show on FX last night called "Nip/Tuck". One of the plastic surgeons said he would never let anyone in his family get plastic surgery because all it is, is externalizing someone's hatred for themselves....interesting comment.

It was kind of a graphic show and after watching it there is NO WAY I'd ever get all sliced and bloodied up like that just for vanity's sake.

RE: Nip/Tuck...new show

Ok, I wasn't going to get into this debate here, but I am just going to say one thing. I feel that what one person does to their body is their own business. They can can do what they want and I won't judge them. I don't understand why people get so mad at others just for doing what they want to do.
There, I have said my part. I'm done now.

RE: Nip/Tuck...new show

I don't think anyone here is mad at anyone else for getting plastic surgery. I think the reasons that people get plastic surgery, outside of corrective plastic surgery, are the things that we are debating.

And yes, people will always do what they want to their bodies, whether they are piercing their ears, making their boobs bigger or their noses smaller, splitting their tongues, or getting tatoos. There must be something in our collective genetics as a species that makes us look at ourselves and not be satisfied. In a way it's fascinating. What compells us to do these things to ourselves? That, to me, is a more interesting question.

RE: Nip/Tuck...new show

I honestly could care less that people get plastic surgery. I would never stop being someone’s friend if they got it or even stop buying an instructor’s video because they felt the need to alter themselves surgically. Everyone can do whatever they want but I personally would never do it. I do have opinions on why people decide to put themselves at risk for infection, scarring and even death just for vanity’s sake. I do think it would be fabulous if the reason for wanting to have plastic surgery in the first place could be fixed.
Everyone would be a lot happier and accepting of himself or herself.

Hope it made sense. I didn’t mean to step on anyone’s toes with my personal opinions.

RE: Nip/Tuck...new show

Sarah...I feel the EXACT same way. I could never do it myself but would never stop being someone's friend because of it. I don't have any Karen Voight workouts, but will probaby end up getting one sooner or later.

RE: Nip/Tuck...new show

I wasn't upset, I just had to put in my two cents. I just got frustrated by how many poeple seemed to be mad at Karen just for getting a few things done. It's not like she had Liposuction, then I would understand.

RE: Nip/Tuck...new show

I think the objections I personally have with a fitness instructor having plastic surgery has to do with the fact that the person is suppose to be advancing a lifestyle of being your personal best through exercise, diet, healthful living, etc. To alter your body through surgery kind of negates this attitude, almost like false advertising. I'm of the opinion that an instructor's body is a postive "advertisement", if you will, for the effectiveness of their workouts and the choices they make in other areas of their lives concerning their health.

I guess that is judgemental of me.

Plastic surgery was one reason I stopped using the Firm workouts. Too many of their instructors had surgery. (The other more important reason, though, was that for me, Cathe workouts were more effective.)

I would just die if I ever thought Cathe had anything done to herself. Where would I go then? LOL!

Thanks for letting me share my opinion again!

Susan

RE: Nip/Tuck...new show

Susan just made me think of something. I stopped using the Firm at the time when the implants all started showing up. The reason why I did was that I really stopped identifying with the instructors doing the workouts. None of them seemed like "real" regular people to me. They took on too much of a "beautiful people"/"Hollywood type" edge. Why should I think I could attain a body like that when I'm clearly NOT one of the "beautiful people" who could afford it?

One of the great things about Cathe and her crew is that they're regular folks who could be living next door. When I read the bios of her crew for IS, I found something about each person that I could identify with. Being able to do that is really motivating and keeps me buying Cathe's stuff.

This has been a really interesting thread.

I'm curious as to whether Karen has ever talked publicly about the changes she has made since body image is so important in her line of work. I'm curious as to whether any one on these boards knows her or has attended a class of hers. She does list an email address on her website but i don't think it is directly to her. I have emailed her in the past at that email address re: an exercise question and never received a reply. Just curious as to what she'd make of all this interest in her face and body. Free publicity at least!!

RE: Nip/Tuck...new show

I've enjoyed reading and participating in this thread too.

I feel like I can identify with the crew in Cathe's videos as well.

Well guys,

I just have to weigh in here. I have implants in both breast, but mine was due to a bilateral masectomy, so circumstances were a little different. Since I do have a little experience on this subject I just have to share. There are several risks with implants. I had a top of the line surgeon do mine and yes, I have little "bubbles" that protrude through the skin on my breast. I had to have a "hernia" operation on my breast to repair one that could have eventually worn through my skin. The feeling in your breast is completely different you can "tell" they are in there for about 1 year after they're put in. My surgeon told me that contrary to what people believe or are told, the average life of an implant is ten years, so to plan on another surgery at some point in time to replace them. I just wanted to let anyone who might consider having this done for cosmetic reasons know what they could be in for. A large percentage of implants are actually rejected by the body. Of course, it is none of my business what anybody's plastic surgery choices are, Karen's, Joan's, Micheal's (even though that his is a bit extreme). I just wanted to weigh in on some of the effects of it. Would I do it again? Yes in a heartbeat. Would I do it if I didn't need a masectomy, NO WAY. And yes, I did go a size larger, I mean geez, I was paying for them and having it done anyway, why not????;-)

Blessings,

Denise

Interesting thread! And the GREAT thing is we've dont it with out name calling etc ;) sometimes a challenge on the web.

Gayle and Susan I'm totally with you. YES I also stopped the Firm when so many got implants. I'm with you it's about healthy living being the best you can be and I just didn't want an excercise role model doing it the implant way.

Also I agree I think some of the face lifts look horrible - pulled back it certainly isn't becoming - at least the drastic ones.... again smokey robinson wasn't it on american idol.

Good thread!

I can't help it, I have to weigh in on this, too. I believe the boob and face lift things are self-confidence and/or peer pressure issues (unless there are medical issues involved). I'll age with grace, good eating habits, exercise, all in moderation. And I like my "rack" just fine. So does my husband. However, I would love to zap off some of those spider veins I've got appearing on my legs! Um...that doesn't count...does it? If she did get a facelift, do you think Karen was trying to reverse some sun damage? She always looked quite tanned to me but maybe not. One other thought: some people get plastic surgery to downsize a feature or two; Carol Burnett comes to mind. It's not always a bad thing. I think the objections are when someone gets a procedure done when they really don't seem to need it.

As I started this debate I think I should be the one to end it. I made comments saying that I think she looks fabulous. I still think she looks great. Now and then. But reading some of the comments on here I’m horrified at the responses of some. Everyone has a right to do what he or she wishes. If it makes them happy then go for it. That’s what I think. I also think that perhaps we should have a little respect for Karen as you never know she might actually one day get to read these extremely negative comments. Plastic surgery is a personal thing and I personally if had the money to burn would consider getting a few things done. Does that make me bad? Does that make me overly narcissistic? I don’t think so. Her choice to have a breast enlargement was her opinion. Kathy02, I think your comments are extremely valid. You seem like a very sane, healthy and non-judgemental person. I hope we can end this topic now as its clear that some people on this board have very limited opinions.

>The people who like big boobs are men. If this world were
>full of just women there would be no such thing as breast
>implants.

Sarah, I disagree with this part of your statement. I have always had big boobs (what a silly word for breasts!) and love having them even though it means having to buy scaffolding so I can do my favourite Cathe step workouts and even though it sometimes means I am targeted by insensitive men who think it's okay to point out the size of my chest (grrrrrr) Some people, (trying not to generalise here but I am talking about men and women) think that a woman with big breasts is 'easy' to put it as nicely as I can. I can't tell you how embarrassing it is to have someone shout out something profane about the size of your bust on a busy Saturday afternoon in the middle of town. Or how horrible it is when someone assumes that you bought them! I'm a very shy person and it took me a very long time to set aside all that and feel proud of my body. I think all people are beautiful (yes I am a bit of a tree-hugger :) ) and all bust lines and bodylines are beautiful although I'll admit to having reservations about seeing boobs on men! ;)

If I'm ever lucky enough to have children and if having children means losing some size there, I wouldn't have surgery to put things back to the way they were. If age or pregnancy doesn't happen to reduce the size of my bust, sure, I'd love to have them reduced but you won't catch me on a surgeon's table unless it's a matter of life and death! No matter how nice it would be to be able to wear the nice clothes that look best on women with smaller bust lines than I have!
ATB,
- Lisa :)

Lisa-

I too have a decent bust size and have had many comments such as"nice rack" or "check those out" while walking down the street. I find this uncomfortable because I am very modest by nature. My point is that men are the reason that having a large chest is considered more "attractive". You don't hear women saying "nice rack". If men started to find smaller breasts more attractive, I guarantee there would be a heck of a lot more breast reductions (not me, of course).

Think about why women have breasts in the first place...to breastfeed our children, not for a man. It could all go back to how they say we subconciously pick mates by reproductive qualities in the sense that a more ample chest would appear to mean better reproduction, which then seems more attractive to the opposite sex (not sure if this was clear).

Anyway, I just think it is very sad that society is so geared toward someone's physical appearance. There are much more important things in life. Just think about the difference it would make in this world if all the money spent on implants would be given to homeless or cancer research.

:)
