Clean eaters....what are you giving out as Halloween treats?

RE: Clean eaters....what are you giving out as Hallowee...

How about money? We never got many trick or treaters at my mom's house so it wasn't worth it to buy bags of candy. We used to put some of our spare change (50 cents maybe) in a baggie and hand that out...but I guess if you get lots of kids, you could go broke that way! LOL Just a thought though...

Thanks for the ideas for the pretzels and popcorn. I agree that it is just one day a year and kids should be allowed to have treats... but this is the hardest time of the year for me! Especially since the "halloween" candy has been on the shelves since JULY!!!!!!!!!! I just think it's gotten a little out of hand.

I was curious with all you ladies that eat "clean" how to promote it outside of this forum....

I remember getting nickels and pennies when I was a kid. I loved getting money. There was a little corner store in our neighborhood and we would go there the next day and get loads of penny candy. Back then you could get a big candy bar for a nickel. I think that's a great idea!!

LMAO @ Jess! I'll stash the rocks in case I get some flax seed from one of my neighbors ;)

Wendy, I wanna come to your house and get money! WHOOOOOT!

I've seen small bags of peanuts. However, peanut allergies are very common.
One year my parents gave out leaflets about the 'real meaning of Halloween...then a message about Jesus'. Our trees were t.p.'d and our house was whipped creamd..Hmm, I'm sticking with candy. hahaha

I don't promote it at all. I'm not a clean eating evangelist. ;) I encourage my husband to make good food choices, but when it comes to other people, I keep my mouth shut. Most people get really defensive if you start giving them unsolicited eating suggestions or criticizing their diet anyway.

LOL! If you come, I'll give ya some! I have TOOONS of loose change! I don't get many trick or treaters here either so I have done money here as well...I guess it depends on how busy your neighborhood is. :)

RE: Clean eaters....what are you giving out as Hallowee...

My fave Halloween memories are of the lady that gave out FULL SIZE Hershey's bars! We used to try to re-rig our costumes to go there twice, lol.

I always give out candy, and my kids like getting it. They eat some of what they receive, but not a lot. I think they just like it being given to them, lol. But on Halloween AND Easter I end up dumping most of the stuff weeks after the fact. Ick. :) We are more the salty types, I think. :)

Cheers,
Marie

AGREED...I'm giving out candy too. Hershey's new Take 5 candy. It's chocolate and peanut butter covered pretzels. YUM!

:)

You gals have such good neighborhoods! We'd be egged if we tried to hand out healthy stuff!

As for cavities - I'm 41 and have one cavity. And I ate all of my Halloween candy, Easter Candy, and just about any other candy I could get my hands on. I think it's more genetics and flouride. I did not drink many sodas, though - and I hear that something in soda - not the sugar, really wears away tooth enamel. Now I don't eat candy, but I figure I had my share and then some!!!

I only pass out candy! Halloween and candy go hand in glove. I would be so peeved if I were a kid and got an apple! The very idea! I'm not going to make the neighborhood kids suffer because I eat salads six days a week.
Just Do It! :)

RE: Clean eaters....what are you giving out as Hallowee...

Rocks!!!LOL
I give out candy that I don't like, too.
When my kids were little, we rationed them to one piece of candy a day and they usually forgot they even had it before it was gone. We have more trouble now handing it out. My son with Prader Willi Syndrome (characterized by an constant feeling of starvation) wants to help hand out treats, all the while trying to figure out a way to steal some for himself. It gets exhausting. I go to church and help out with the "harvest party" they throw for the neighborhood kids and let DH handle the trick or treaters and DS at home.

Heather and Wendy -

Have you had the Pumpkin shaped Reese cups??? OMG, they are sooo good! I have about 10 in the freezer and so far I've been good and only have 1 or 2 each week. I figure I can make them last until Christmas when the Santa shaped Reese cups come out!! :9

I cannot bring those home. I'm so addicted to them. I don't know why, but the holiday Reese's cups are so much better than the regular ones. My favorite one is the peanut butter egg at Easter time. I think it's because they seem to have more peanut butter.

Michele

The Easter ones are my favorite too. It's my rule to only buy them when the holiday ones are out. They are so popular that most of the time I can never find them in the stores so I only end up with a few anyway.

Well, nobody comes down my little dead=end street. I tried years ago when I first moved here, and decorated up a storm, had scary music on an a skeleton in my yard, "gravestones"in my front yard (that had all the sod removed in preparation for new dirt delivery!) but only two over-30 women (a friend and a neighbor) came by.

If anyone DID come by, I'd give packages of raisins, cool pens and pencils, stickers, other non-food items. When I was a kid, we'd give out oranges decorated with a pumpkin face (but I guess people are too scared of poisoning or food tampering nowdays).

>Thanks for the ideas for the pretzels and popcorn. I agree

>me!

But nowdays, kids have "treats" EVERY day. It's not like it was back when most of us were kids.

I think non-food treats are a great idea (and you don't have to contend with allergies as well).

Well, I say this every year but it never happens... I am going to try and buy candy that I don't particularly care for myself (Smarties, Suckers, Nerds, etc.) so that I don't eat half of it. However, I usually end up giving away Butterfingers, Reese's Peanutbutter Cups, Nestle Crunch Bars, etc. I just remember when I was a kid I always ate all the candy bars first and left the sugary stuff until my Mom finally threw it away a month later.
