::::: CHEETAHS ::::: Mon., 2/12

Colleen - I'm so sorry to hear about your brother-in-law. How hard! How's your sister holding up? I'm thinking of you and her.

Hi Cheetahs -

I'm skipping the workout today. I'm just tired and worn from the headache, and I'll just switch today with my rest day tomorrow. No biggie.

A little green monster dropped off a boatload of cookies today. Not happy with her! :p So I'll be playing avoidance. Of course, my DD's will get their own boxes. The others will be frozen. Fun, fun... I love Girl Scout cookies...

Colleen...I am so sorry for your loss. I will keep you and your families in my thoughts and prayers....

Colleen, adding in my condolences. I'm so sorry for your sister's loss. Have a safe trip & check in when you get back. (((HUGS)))

Good afternoon Cheetahs! My 10 mile run is behind me and it was one of the worse runs that I can recall. Many of the varaiables that can make running a struggle were firmly in place...a minor injury, lack of sleep, horrendous diet the preceding week, about 7 or 8 lbs that I am not used to lugging around.... The mental aspect kicked in at around the 5 mile point and the only satisfaction I have from completing all 10 miles is the fact that I didn't bail early. I'm on day two of clean eating and am icing my tired and sore legs as we speak so I hope to see some improvement next time I get out there. I took stock of where I am right now in terms of running fitness and think that the June marathon and the lead up to it will just be a part of a plan to build base miles. That's perfectly OK. I believe I peaked last October when I ran Saint George and so a step back from the hard training will be good for me.

Enough about me! Let's get on with personals:

Cathy, I love your bright and cheerful new avatar. No, I didn't hook up with a grief counselor. I thought I had it licked but apparently I don't. DH mentioned calling the Employee Assistance Program at his work for me today though. I think he'd rather have my moods more consistent. A summer GTG would work for me too. The only problem would be if it's just too far away. I'm not working right now so the money is a little tighter than normal plus I think I might run Boston next April and that's going to cost some bucks. Someone mentioned a beachy place. If that idea approaches a consensus be sure to keep in mind that I live at the beach.

Gayle, I have never, ever used a TM so my longest distance would be zero miles. I have done an elliptical workout for 90 minutes though! I have thought that I may want a magic bullet so be sure to let us know if you like it.

Thomasina, Are you running a 1/2 in San Diego or the full? If it's the 1/2 then is must be with TnT????

Laurie, That must have been some serious rough housing yesterday! Sounds like you handled it with much more grace than I would have.

Judy, So sorry about the hip issues. Believe me, I know it's no fun not being 100%. I'll be anxious to here your review of the book that Barb recommended.

Laura, I am in total agreement with being in awe of the Cheetahs who have managed to lose weight and keep it off. This got me to thinking about myself....after DD5 was born I needed to lose about 25 lbs. I lost the first 15 then took a break from constant diet diligence for about a year. Then I finally got sick enough of the other 10 lbs to stick with it to lose the rest. Well, right now I am dealing with about an 8 lb weight gain and I know the answer to successfully keeping it off is (for me at least)a commitment to a very clean diet. I just feel better all the way around with that method, having only occassional cheats rather than weekly(or more!). Right now I am on day two of a promise to myself to eat clean for at least 4 days. Carole assures me that after four days it gets easier. So I'm not really concentrating on calories right now but rather that the food I eat is nutrient dense. When I get that part under control then I will attack the calories and get rid of the fat......again! So, to make a long story short, I totally relate to your frustration with those stubborn lbs that don't just melt away with hard workouts.

Carole, I hope your hamstring and glute feel better after your massage. Was it something that came on suddenly? My Eat To Live book should arrive tomorrow. I'm hoping to get a lot from it, particularly in the area of eating vegetarian.

Barb, Did you use weighted gloves when you did LIC? That one (LIC) I don't like much. I don't care for Low Max either really. I like the idea of low impact but the step segments in both of them just drag for me. I do like the blasts though and have recently used my elliptical for the step segments then hopped off of that to do the blasts with the DVD then back onto the elliptical again. The workout went by really quickly and kicked my butt too. Snow sounds really nice to me! We are getting some rain here though so now everything is going to be so green and pretty!

Jess, I'm happy that you are feeling better. Maybe a bout of stomach flu is what I need to really jump start losing some weight!

Linda, Both of the women in your picture trail look extremely fit and healthy. I assuming one of them is you??? LOL!! You look awesome! I really want to check out Barry's Boot Camp.

Christine, I hope the headache is staying away and that you have a fabulous day!

Susan, My kids get a four day weekend starting Friday. I think we'll head down to Santa Barbara for one of those days and visit the Natural History Museum and also the wonderful little zoo that overlooks the ocean. I've always been amazed too at how you complain a lot about eating bad food but yet you look absolutely wonderful in your pictures. Either your metabolism is better than mine or I've got you beat by a long shot on the bad eating thing. Whooeee! If I were to make a full confession of what I've been doing to myself lately I don't know what you all would think!! LOL!!

Colleen, I am so sorry about the sudden loss of your BIL! I'm sending hugs and prayers for your family. Please stop by and say hello and don't feel bad about not addressing everyone individually.

Hi Wendy, Sunny, and anyone else I might have missed.

Elaine ~ I hate those really tough runs where you just feel accomplished to have gotten through it. And you did!!! WTG! How's the PF feeling??

There's no way I'd send you that stomach flu. It was the worst!! I told my dh I haven't felt that bad in years!! (and he could tell by the way I looked!!)

My kids have a 3 day weekend, they have President's Day off next Mon. Sounds like you'll have a fun weekend! Enjoy the rest of the day!

susan- I should have done something extra today, but I didnt. My son does have soccer at the ymca tonight before my class, I could walk, run or do the elliptical before class. I just dont want to have to exercise to such an extreme to where my body comes to expect it,thats what I am afraid of.

elaine-great job on losing the wt. I have struggled for yrs to lose then keep that last 8lbs off. I am not considered fat but it took me a long time to get down to the low 120's and now I am back up to my prewedding wt which sucks. Yes I ended up losing wt after each kid and got down to my lowest. It seemslike my body keeps wanting to go back to where it use to be 130 -132lbs. I know that isnt alot but I am only 5' 2 1/2 and I felt really great around 121lbs . Now if I get the flu or something, then that sends me into a wt loss mode for months and months. I dont want to get sick but that seems to be the only thing that shocks my body enough to change things up for me. It isnt fair- Iknow poor baby!!

anyway, you all should be proud of yourself to have the will power and strength to accomplish what you have. I need to find that within my self, I know its there, its just a matter of sticking with it. I stick with the exercise part with everything that I am but I just cant seem to stick it with the eating part. I will do good for a couple of days , and then blow it the other days . I keep trying and trying and still end up pigging out which in turn hinders my results. I know this so why cant I stop it? I guess I have no mind over matter, no will power.

well gotta finish dinner and then take my son to soccer practice before class. chat with you wonderful ladies later!

G'afternoon Cheetahs! I got a lot of CleanMax done around here this morning & did DM (all of it) & then CoreMax #3 (stability & med. ball). Feeling more like myself after a good workout!!! ;-)

Just a quick post, I gotta get in the shower & the girls will be home soon!

Hi cheetahs—
It’s not cold out there, but I’m cravin’ MM, so that’s what I’ll be doing a little later this evening.

Sunny :: thanks ~ sunflowers (and tulips) are my favorite flowers!

Wendy :: yeah, how was that for a visual to go with your lunch? ;)

Gayle :: I also have a Magic Bullet – love, love, love it!! The longest I have run on a TM is one hour. I just go out of my mind w/ boredom on that thing.

Laurie :: OK, then we do have enough to place an order but the second-round shirts are more money than the last time…cost will be approx. $30. Is that OK? Any word from Mr. Soccer?
Sorry about the big bang-up yesterday…how in the world did that happen?…Hear, hear on the longer days!!

Carole :: thanks for the heads up on the dates that are no good for you…it’d be great if we can pull something together that works for everyone who’s interested…sorry about the computer issues…so I guess Vista has some kinks?…Hope the massage helped the hammy/glute issue…I scheduled one for the end of February and can’t wait!!..Wait a minute—Clam Beach—that is one I bookmarked--that has you wading through water???

Barb :: there was talk of potential for snow tomorrow into Wednesday, but now it sounds downplayed. :( Hope you managed to stay loose today!

Linda :: what kind of runs does Barry have you doing? I read a thread on the Open Forum about Fluidity, and now THAT’S caught my eye, too! I think I better reign it in here...P90 has even arrived yet and I'm already looking to spend more!

Christine :: :( on the headache…what a way to start a Monday…Now didja have to mention GS cookies??? *drools thinking of Thin Mints*

Susan :: I have always wanted to go to San Diego…I’d be down for that! Great w/out yesterday – big calorie burn! Enjoy your rest day. I have picked up a little trick for when I need a chocolate fix…I go for a Riesen candy…they’re especially chewy, so it works your jaw and forces you to eat slow. Four of them = 1 serving = 170 calories.

Colleen :: (((HUGS))) so sorry to hear about the sudden passing of your BIL…how terrible!…It’s understandable if you want to take a break from the check-in, but I hope you do come back…Yeah, things get crazy around here, but don’t feel pressured if you can’t always keep up. Do what you can. ((HUGS)) again…that is just awful news.

Elaine :: sorry about the rough run today…good for you for slugging through it…your training approach sounds wise…it will all come together again for you. Hang in! Duly noted about the beach ~
So far, Vegas, San Diego, and Chicago have been tossed out as possibilities…would any of those (or something else) appeal to you?

Hi Marcia, Judy, Laura, and Jess!

Cathy :)

Howdy Cheetahs..

Got some treadmill miles in and pyramid upper before my trek to work. On the way, I rescued a sweet yellow lab running down the middle of highway 174. Awe dang, I was so lucky she ran right to me after I pulled over and whistled for her. She had a nice collar and flea collar but no tags…grrr. Since I wasn’t supposed to have dogs on campus (even in the car) and I wasn’t getting any response from the local rescue orgs, I had to take her to the local animal shelter. The lady there said they wait 4 days to locate an owner then they try to put the healthy ones through adoption. Although I can’t really stand to go to shelters, I did see quite a bit of volunteers there cleaning and walking the dogs. I guess that was a better alternative than being run over this morning. Then my dh calls me at work and says, “why didn’t you just bring her home”. Now you tell me! SHeesh, he has softened up a quite a bit. I thought he would be griping at me about letting the poor thing in my car. Anyhoo, I hope it all works out well for the dog and the local radio station has my number in case anyone calls. Uh, sorry for the long story….

Cathy – LOL ya, the skinny cow incident. Those suckers are now on the list of what is not allowed in the house (along with kettle chips!). Actually the San Diego event that Elaine and I are going to be running is the Rock n Roll San Diego Marathon on June 3. Here’s the link: http://www.rnrmarathon.com/home.html.

Marcia – have fun at the board meeting and don’t get bored….lol. Sorry, couldn’t help myself. I call going to team meetings a team beating….lol

Judy – I hope your hip gets better!

Gayle – I’ll have to see what a magic bullet is. I think my longest dreadmill run is around 13 or 14. It was during marathon training and the weather was lousy. I think I watched a really old movie or something.

Laurie – I’ve had that feeling before after a little bit of wine. Usually a workout does clear the cobwebs though! Ah yes, the teens. You do have a great attitude about the broken items though. My DH would have gone through the roof.

Carole – I hope your massage works out the kinks. I hate when stuff like that happens and interferes with a workout!

Barb – DS sounds so cute! It sounds like the critique I would receive from my DD.

Linda – great pictures. DH and I are headed to Aruba later this year.

Laura – I also struggle with weight loss. Actually, I lost over 40 pounds years ago and kept it off for years. Now I have gained a lot of weight (especially after being injured and couldn’t run) and I am trying to keep on the clean eating route and stay consistent with my exercise. I have found that I do best taking each day at a time. I agree that these ladies are VERY supportive and inspiring!

Susan – Glad to hear you’re recovering from your “quarter pounder incident”…lol… I had a “skinny cow incident”…

Jess – I’m happy you’re feeling better and getting the cheetah clean eating thread going. Geesh, I think all us cheetahs had an “incident” while away from the clean eating board! Uh, except you of course.

Elaine – Nope, I’m running the FULL marathon in San Diego. And I’m not doing the TNT thing this time. I just heard that from and email coming from the chapter office that they have a half exclusive to TNT only. .Yeah, although I weight a ton more than you, I too am battling lugging around extra baggage whilst trying to run. That’s why I’m sooo slow and taking it easy until I get this all off of me. You’ll be fine for San Diego, I just know it!

Colleen – I am so sorry for your loss. I agree with the others and Judy that you should still checkin and not worry about greeting everyone. I can’t always take the time to do that either but it sure puts a lift in my mood to check in with the lovely cheetah bunch!

Hi Sunny & Wendy!!

Take care everyone – lunch time is over for me! I’ll check back in later!

Thomasina

Elaine - Thanks. Yes, I am the one in the pink shirt. I have been trying to get the comments or titles on the individual pictures...but I am having no luck. I can't even figure out how to get an avatar up :+ Just call me "Picture Trail Clueless" :-( Sorry the run didn't feel well! Good job on getting it done, though!

Cathy - BBC runs are very intense interval runs. I have never pushed myself that hard. I use Cardio Coach's all the time, but I have always been a little afraid to push that hard. The treadmill portions are 30 minutes and they are all a little different. He has you sprint, put the incline up to 10% or 15% part of the time. On one of them, you jog backwards a little and one you go sideways. On these sections, I have to go very, very slow because I feel sooo uncoordinated.

Linda

Thomasina - Thanks! I hope you guys enjoy Aruba as much as we did! It was really nice and the people were really friendly. The weather was awesome! Good job on the workout! Oh my goodness! That was really good of you to rescue the little lab! Maybe her owners will check there for her!

Linda

Thomasina :: good Samaritan rescuing the woof-woof this morning. I looove Skinny Cows - they could never be banned - esp. the cookies & cream one. Yum! Now I want one, thanks! *lol* Oh OK, the R&R Marathon.

Linda :: egads! That guy sounds nuts! *lol* Running backwards on a tread is my ticket to meet Shelly (in the hospital).

You guys are giving me way too much credit:) I was pi$$ed when it happened and EVERYONE knew it. I had my rant and rave and concluded with 'I don't want to talk about it anymore'. The kids cleaned everything up without being asked which helped pacify me. The whole thing was a result of some pushing and shoving for the covetted 'sweet spot' on the couch.

Colleen, I hope your trip to Seattle is a good one. It'll be lovely to get a break from winter.

Christine, good luck avoiding those cookies. The only ones I can't resist are the dark chocolate/mint ones:9

Elaine, you have trained hard and had such a year, not surprising that you stepped back from it for a bit. I think it's fabulous that you perservered through your ten miles despite all of the internal and external distractions.

Cathy, whatever the cost is okay, it's worth it for a limited edition tee like these. I'll need some specifics, I guess a US money order will work best. Sad to say I haven't heard from Mr. Soccer. I'm not sure if I'm cut out for this. There's such a false sense of familiarity when talking on-line with many of these men but it's too easy to casually discard someone after meeting them only once. I don't know what protocol is but next week I'll contact him, it was a positive experience meeting him and we talked about somethings that will stay with me always. I talked about how our dreams change with time and he said 'the dream adapts', I loved that. Maybe it's time for me to adapt the relationship dream. I yearn too much but that has been a negative result of this pursuit, it makes me all too aware of my 'singleness'. Perhaps it's still not my time....That being said, I'm meeting a gentleman from the Coast Guard tomorrow, he's been very determined to meet me. So how's it going for you? What are your impressions of e-harmony, maybe I need a site with more of a filtre.

Thomasina, I love that story:) That pup was so lucky to be rescued by you. The price of Skinny Cow products has kept me from trying them, maybe I'll indulge once the temperatures rise. I don't eat much ice cream in winter but I sure make up for it in the summer :7

My stomach is telling me it's time for supper. I lost 2 pound last week and feel great about it. I'm 3 weeks into this and my clothes are fitting much better and I feel more comfortable in my skin. Hope I can keep the momentum going!

Take Care
Laurie

Cathy - I slowed the treadmill down to 1 mph to try that one. The other ones are "normal" runs. Is Shelly in the hospital? What have I missed? I hope she is okay!

Cathy - It just "got" what you meant about Shelly:+ You meant because she is a trauma nurse:+ :+ It is sooo Monday. Just ignore me!

Linda

Linda :: actually, it sounds pretty interesting...now I have a dilemma ~ Barry or fluidity after P90?? I had a ski instructor once who made me go backwards down the mountain for a little ways -- kinda freaky! But strangely enough, I had a dream I was skiing down a hill backwards just the other night...*lol*...wonder what THAT says about my warped mind!

Laurie :: Well, hopefully that ends the couch wars! I have two video rocker chairs in my classroom that I let the kids sit in for silent reading time...in one class, the boys have gotten so overzealous about it, I thought one boy was going to put his head through the wall in the mad dash to grab the seat...so, I had to put the kibosh on it!... I'll PM you re: my Harmony adventures...trust me, you are NOT alone with your doubts!!

OK, I just finished MM and noticed something interesting about my HR. According to the Polar, I was only in my HR zone for 3 min and my avg HR was 121, but I burned 371 calories, and it said that was 55% fat. Does anyone know how it determines this? I find it interesting bc when I do cardio - like yesterday's run - I went really slow but still found my HR to be above my zone for most of the time. I burned 811 (according to the HRM) but only 20% fat. I couldn't get my hands on the Sally Edwards book Carole recommended recently so that I could educate myself, but I just wonder if anyone can add any insight as to what these numbers mean. I'm sure they should be used as a guide and not as though the info given is gospel, but I wonder...if this gives creedence to the idea folks have been repeating on these boards lately about how upping weights and reducing cardio can help one lose more fat. TIA for anyone who can shed any light here!

OK, cheetahs! It's 7 pm...I schlepped home some schoolwork that just ain't happenin' anymore tonight. I don't know why I bother to put it in the bag. *lol* Hey, it's an extra weight workout, I guess. ha

Cathy :)

Cathy-- remember I'm the "gist" person here, so I'll give it a try:
I think the idea is that as your HR goes up and your burn more calories, your body is moving into a more anaerobic state, which is burning the glycogen stores from your muscles (or Carbs as Jari L. reminds us...) whereas at a lower heart rate, you are in an aerobic state and the body can go into burning fat stores if you stay there for long enough....
I think the Sally Edwards book helps you figure out your HR zones more accurately so you can know better what to aim for during a particular type of workout. There are different formulas to use that take into account your resting HR and then once you know your recalculated range, the HR monitor can tell you if you are accomplishing staying in the zone you need to on that day for that particular kind of workout vs. now your monitor is telling you how your body is theoretically burning which type of calories based on its formula for your age and fitness level.
So when you burned "55% fat" I think you would want to know for you, which "zone" you were in, an aerobic zone vs. an anaerobic zone (doing intervals).....and whether that is what you were aiming for that day.
There is a book written by a NY Times health reporter Gina Kolata about fitness myths and she explains this. Also BFFM has a section on this I think.

Thanks, Barb! Much appreciated! Yes, I absolutely do want to recalculate my zones more specifically for me -- I noticed there is that OwnZone feature on the Polar, but to tell you the truth, I only skimmed through it when I first programmed the thing and haven't had the chance to take another look. I will check out the Kolata book...I do have BFFM but have not read through it all, so I'll hunt for that section.
