::: CHEETAHS ::: Hump Day, 10/11

Jess- keep taking it easy and listening to your body and mind as to what to do next. In time, there will be a new "normal" to get back to.

Susan--I live in Ann Arbor -- and funny, I was in Holland this summer twice. It's such a cute town with a lot of good stores! I've been to Grand Haven, too and like it. About the antsy feeling -- I think we all have it. It's tough to know how to respond in a healthy way. I sometimes pick "active" recovery when I know my body says no running today, but my ants say do "something." Careful with those aches and pains -- it's better to do less now to be safe than to end up with a bigger injury and more lost workout time later. I know you stretch a lot and are very experienced at yoga, so if you are feeling sore, it seems like you have to heed your body's cues.

Shelly--your marathon plan makes sense to me to back up and start over and get to know your body again post injury. I love "beginnings" of anything, movies, training plans, days, etc. so there is something so happy about the first few weeks of the training grid. have fun with the patio project today.

Christine--enjoy the last week before your new job starts. That your DH has the running bug is funny and will be lots of fun for you. I agree about the Roomba. I guess I 'll have to give it a seat at the dinner table. It better not be a picky eater, because I am not in the mood....

Laurie-- I love your photo! Beautiful smile and so much energy. thanks for posting it!

Have a great day everyone!
-Barb

hi ladies,

just quickly checking back in to say i ran out of time to do MM this morning. too busy reading these posts, hehehe. so i did p90 masters sculpt 5-6, it's a 45 min. total body workout. tony is as quirky as ever.:+

i hope everyone is enjoying their day so far:)

i know none of you are doctors; or play one on tv; but I could use some of your wisdom and advice.

now that i've built up my running again, i'm starting to get a sporadic twinge on the outside right front of my right knee cap. the same leg that caused problems and made me stop running. i had to stop running for a year or so (that's how i found cathe) to let the itb heal. never saw a dr. for it because i have huge medical bills for managing my inflammatory arthrits. long story. i take enbrel for it and i'm ok as long as i'm on the drug but i'm self insured with $5,000 year deductable and 80% coverage, so my enbrel is $250.00 a month with the deductable. da**!

i do roll in a bit on my right foot. can't remember what it's called but a podiatrist last winter recommended saucony's for me. they are a stability shoe that is narrow in the heel wide in the front.

do those knee "thingys" i see some runners wear help?

i had orthodics when i was a flight attendant and i hated them. i had one for street shoes and one for sport and i always got blisters from them on the edges of my feet.

i have one leg longer than the other. the left is pretty much ok except for some old arthritis damage but the right one is at least 1 inch shorter and I roll in (i think) so i have a bunion on the right big toe from compensation of rolling.

good heavens! upon rereading this it's a wonder i can even walk!

i'm too tired today to type with capitol letters.

it's because of having the arthritis and having been crippled with it twice that i have become the exercise fanatic that i am. i have to move it or i freeze up. rigorous exercise.

i love what cathe plus the running have done for me; and i love the freedom from a dvd player and equipment; when i travel but i'm wondering if i'll never get to the next level as a runner.

i want to be able to run 6 to 10 miles by this time next year.

i don't know who else to ask about this problem.

ran yesterday (twinge, twinge) plan to do a lower body today.

colleen up in freezing minneapolis

I'm on my break now and thought I'd catch up with everyone:) You all have been VERY busy!

Cathy, enjoy your rest day, hope your meetings are short and productive!

Sunny, enjoy MM, such a great workout! I mixed MM abs with KPC abs yesterday and got a lovely buzz through my core!

Wendy, nice to see your avatar back up. Looks like you had gorgeous weather for your 5 mile run!

Laura, good for you for getting your run in so late and not blowing it off altogether! Isn't it funny how the ability to get up early and workout ebbs and flows. I used to get up at 5:00 to workout but have a heck of a time hauling my butt out of bed by 6:30 now! Maybe I should play the lotto too!

Linda, nice lowerbody work! PLB is the lowerbody workout I use the least. I should seriously revisit it!

Carole, hope the wind was at your back for your tempo run! Thanks for your nice words, now that I know how to get an avatar up I'll have to get a shot with my Girls (now THERE'S some great smiles!!).

Barb, it's pretty grey here in Southern Ontario too:( The weatherman said there are flurries in the forecast for Friday, I haven't even pulled all of my annuals from the garden yet, it's been very nice until now. Sounds like your A-Jock mish-mosh was just the ticket!:)

Christine, hope you got to enjoy your trail run! Work really does get in the way of my fitness plans too!

Susan, take care of that sciatic and don't push it if it isn't willing to give. I have seen people in clinic struggling for months with sciatica because they didn't listen to their body's signals. I say better to take it easy for a bit like you are and keep moving than push through pain and be forced to couch it for weeks or even months. Back extension work is great for relieving sciatica (and a good massage of course!;-))

Shelly, nice to see your feeling a bit perkier!:) Fall is gorgeous, isn't it! We had such beautiful weather last weekend and the wind today is still warm. The leaves are starting to fall but there's still lots of colour in the hills.

Jess, what a roller coaster ride for your family. Sorry for your loss. We don't have a lot of rituals in Western society but I think we do right when we lose a loved one. Funerals and wakes are so comforting as you meet people who have been touched by our loved ones and get to hear stories about them that you've never heard before. I am often struck with that at funerals that although I've lost someone I am still getting to know them through other people's stories. (((Hugs)))...

Colleen, you've had quite a go with keeping your fitness routines going, I love it that you have the tenacity to keep forging ahead despite the roadblocks.

Thanks everyone for your kind words on my posting an avatar. You're all very sweet.:*

I'd better get moving now. I need to find a new focus for my fitness, I know the post-event blues are common but I'm feeling it. I was so focussed on the half and now.......blah......I need those new workouts SOON!!! (I know, I know, back of the line Honey, we all want them NOW!!:+ :7

Take Care
Laurie

Hi ladies!

Well, my running class is going up in smoke. LOL DH is working O/T again tonight and I really have no good options for a quick sitter so I will be skipping it. DH could choose not to work but he will make more $ working the extra 2 hours than I spent on this class so I am not going to tell him to turn it down!}(

I ordered and just received David Kirsh's Ult. NY Body Plan work out today. I did it. It's tough but not my style. I believe Collage excepts even OPEN returns if you are not happy. I am thinking of taking advantage of that....

When DH gets home from work I'm off to the gym for a TM run. Not sure how far. It'll be my first run since Sunday's race and my legs are still reeling from my Power class the other night. I'd like to do a long run but not sure the legs will allow for it so I'll have to see how it goes.

I am considering starting to train for the half now...well, right after my 5k race next Sunday. I've printed out Hal Higdon's half training for beginners! Even if I have to do a lot of it on the TM w/winter right around the corner, I'm thinking better to start now rather than later. This way, if I need more time, I'll have it! I can double the plan up by doing each week's work outs 2x through before moving on to the next week. Now that I have DH's blessing I want to move on this before he takes it back! LOL :p }( :7

Okay, I'm done rambling for now!:p

wendy- you are truly inspirational! i love your spirit when it comes to your running. so another 5k and then a HM. you are on a roll!!!

i looked at that workout and it sounds really good but after reading some reviews i decided against it. sorry you didn't like it:-( .

I'm back and feeling good! S&H T&B is a great workout - I feel so STRONG doing it! And it was FUN doing that three mile trail run again. That was the trail I used to run when I first got into trail running. It's a local one and goes down into a valley with wonderful views of the city, then climbs back out. I did not run the whole thing - legs are still a bit tired - but it felt wonderful just to be out running for fun with no thought of why I'm running. Oh that will change and I'll be chomping at the bit for a new challenge, but, for today, it was good.

Susan - I'll be getting up at 4:15, and be working out by 5AM. I'd like to keep my current level of working out, which will be tough, I admit. We'll see.

Shelly - So sorry that your groin still haunts you! How frustrating! *sends healing vibes* Hope you feel better soon.

Barb- I guess a ROOMBA at the table is better than a poodle or something... :+ DH was always a runner, but his knee has been bothering him. But he ran the half with a neoprene sleeve over his knee and he was fine. If I sign us up for a 10k or 12k, he's fine with it and will just run it with no worries.

Jess - glad you're back safe and sound. {{{HUGS}}} The death of someone you love is never easy. I still find myself stopping and wiping tears when I think of my mom. And it happens at the weirdest times. Just remember you Grandma does live on through your memories. I'm thinking of you right now.

Colleen - I wear one of those little braces when my knee twinges on me, and it does help. I also ice the knee as soon as I'm back from a run. Good luck! You're strength and courage to continue exercising is admirable. So many people would just give up and become couch potatoes. You're a Cheetah in every sense!

Laurie - I KNOW what you mean! I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to focus on now that my half is over. But as DH wants to do another half next year, I think I'm going to focus on speed work for a bit.

Wendy- Good luck with your run! I think your idea of training now is a good one. You'll have all winter to SLOWLY increase your mileage. I think you'll do fabulous. Jeez, six months ago, you couldn't even run 1 full mile outdoors... Now you're doing 5 milers and considering a half?!! You are amazing woman!

Hey Sunny!

I said I would TRAIN for the HM but not necessarily DO IT right away! :p I just want to allow myself the time so that I don't feel rushed...I will make my decision on when to actually RUN an HM while I am training. If I don't feel comfortable after my first run through of the training, then I have time to do it AGAIN! }( I also want time to race the distances in between...I did 5 miles but there is also 10k, 10m, 15k, etc...I don't have to run them ALL but I'd like to get a few more "in between races" in there before I jump on the HM bandwagon!:p Hal's training program actually suggests a 5k and a 10k race as part of the training....Anyway, my ultimate goal is to run an HM by the fall of 2007!:+ :+ :+

Christine...Glad to see you back out enjoying your trail runs again! Have fun for a while before you "get serious" again! :+ I think I must be outta my mind w/this half marathon thought but hey, I want to increase my distance anyway so why not shoot for it, right? }( I just won't enter a race until I feel ready for it!

Everyone...I have a question..Hal's beginner half training program only has you running as much as 10 miles and that's where it stops. Does this mean that in theory I don't need to run any further before entering an HM and should be able to do it? It's kinda scarey to me to enter a race for a distance I've never actually physically ran before!!!

Hey Cheetahs!

Quick Check-in today,

Wendy, yes I believe that's what he means. For example, if I'm not mistaken, if you were training for a full marathon, your longest distance that you would run would be 20 or 21 miles. I read that somewhere and I've heard that before. Right cheetahs? (if I'm not correct).

Yesterday, I did some track work and put in about 5 miles. Today was 35 minutes on my bike and will be some strength work later at the gym.
If I have time, maybe another 15 or 20 min. on the elliptical:).

Have a great day everyone,

Katrina:)

Hi again!

Christine - I have to be at work at 8:00 a.m. I usually workout 1 1/2 - 2 hours before work. I gradually started gettng up earlier and earlier. I used to work out in the evenings, up until about 8 years ago. I wish I could go outside and run, though, before work. I have to safe "outside" for the weekends! Enjoy your trail runs!!!

Carole - Hope the new shoes help your feet! I think the wind is supposed to be over here (the east) this evening ;-) We are supposed to have really strong wind and storms this evening. Have yet to see it though!

Barb - Great workout! That sounds fun! I love all of the Cardio Coach's! It has gotten to the point that I don't like to run without them :+ I have not tried any of the iTreads, iClimbs, etc. I really want to and plan to, though! do you use iClimbs on the treadmill, too? Or just the ellipical?

Laurie - Great picture! It is good to put a face with a name! That sounds like a really good workout mix! Kind of like a BodyMax 3 (w/o upper body :7 )

Susan - Good job on the 4 miler and L&G! Sorry your sciatica is still giving you fits, though! I love to run on a flat road, or sidewalk, though!

Shelly - Fall is definitely my favorite season! I am glad your groin pain is better today! Lol....my legs won't feel like legs of steel tomorrow! They will feel more like "legs of lead".

Jess, - I am glad you are back. I hope you feel better and don't get down with an illness. I am sorry you are going through so much!

Colleen - I wish I knew of some advice to give you, but I just wanted to say that I hope you are able to keep at it! It is true though, that when a person quits moving, they feeze up! Just keep on at your own pace and don't push it and hopefully, you will be fine! Phew! That medicine is expensive, isn't it?

Laurie - I can't wait for the new workouts, either! Maybe I am having post race blues, too???

Hope everyone has a good evening!

Linda

Linda--I used an iClimb once on an outdoor run that I knew well and had hills -- it was surprisingly fun. I might get a cardio coach -- is there one you recommend?

Wendy--before my half, my longest run was 11 miles. I think for the novice runner (which was me) that works -- you just pray for those last miles you never ran before. :+ and it works. I think in Hal Higdon's intermediate and advanced programs, you run longer than the 13. I'm impressed you are going for it, Cheetah.

Have a good night everyone!
-Barb
:) :)

Wendy - the Runner's World one had me do an 11 miler, but no more. The idea is to avoid over training, and that on the day of the race, the momentum of the crowds and competitive spirit will get you through the last miles. Also the taper is designed to give you the extra energy you need.

Linda - you must get up early and not piddle around like I do. I need to stop that, but it's the only time I have for myself, so I enjoy it.

Busy cheetahs today!

Laura :: waking up itself – let alone working out -- is definitely more of a struggle on dark mornings!

Carole :: I was definitely NOT implying that you would benefit from losing any lbs.! Please, you couldn’t be any more buff than you are in your picture! I only noticed that I seem to have less bunion pain since I dropped some of the excess weight I was carrying. Glad the new shoes were easy to break in.

Barb :: if I could jump in the Garmin discussion, I would *not* advise getting the 201, which I have. I use it and love the pacing/distance info, but it is a lower-end model and does NOT have a good record when it comes to PC-software compatibility. It also doesn’t have the HR monitor. Don’t know if those are issues/interests for you. If you just want something basic, then by all means, a 201 or lower might work for you. But if I were buying it today, I would get the 205 or 301 or 305.

Laurie :: hey, you updated with a photo. Nice to put a face with the name. You have a radiant post-race glow…I NEVER look that refreshed after a run or race. I’m just RED. Short meetings??? HA! Never! (I wish.) Thanks for the thought, though.

Susan :: I do sometimes get antsy on “off” days. For example, today was a planned rest day, and even though I’m feeling kinda pooped, there’s a little bug in the back of my head that’s saying, “Oooh, MM would be fun” or I get this voice: “Better burn off those Reese’s.” Once in a while, I do give in and work out, anyway, but I tend to just follow how I’m feeling. And lately, forced rest hasn’t been an issue because my schedule’s been so whacked…I’m just doing my best to get in the minimum # of workouts! But anyway, I do understand what you’re experiencing. Do you feel as though you’re burning out?

Shelly :: I love the fall, too…the cooler air is certainly refreshing when you’re out there running…Sorry about the groin flare-up yesterday…hope tomorrow it’s A-OK.

Jess :: Hugs to you during this difficult time…I hope all the warm, wonderful memories you have do bring you some comfort…hang in there and hope you can nip that bug.

Colleen :: your comment about us not being doctors made me chuckle…Sorry, but I really do not know about the knee braces that people wear…I have been lucky enough that I haven’t encountered any serious problems requiring one. Although you mentioned already having massive medical bills, I would recommend seeing a sports doctor and/or podiatrist. Your situation sounds a bit complicated, and if you want to continue to run safe, it seems like the best bet to me. Good luck!

Wendy :: just curious…what didn’t you like about Kirsch’s program? Sounds like a great plan for the HM. Yes, I have read that, too, about the 10 miles. I know when I ran the AC Half (years ago), my longest long runs were 9.5 miles. So I think it is do-able that way.

Hi Sunny, Wendy, Linda, Christine, Katrina, & anyone else dropping in.

Cathy :)

barb- I have the 301 garmin. I got mine on walmart.com for 150.00. I love it!!!

jess- i feel for you about your brother going back to Iraq. My brother was over there for a year and might have to go back in 2007. If I thought about him being over there it would just make me want to cry , so I tried to pretend he just went somewhere else for a few months. He came home this past january and I try to spend as much time as I can with him.

tonight I will try to do the elliptical, probably will be late again. I hopefully will be able to work on getting a morning routine down again. I get a week off before starting my new job, so maybe I can try then or after the craziness of all my kids games come to an end.
talk with you all later!!

Barb, I think Volume 5 is the toughest. Volumes 1-3 are the shortest with the shortest hills and sprints. Volume 6 with Candace is a toughie, too. The drawback on that one is that there is no stretch at the end. (Volumes 1-3 do not have stretches, either). Volume 4 is another good one. It has less rest between the intervals. Hmm - shoot! I don't know which to recommend! They are all good! He remade Volume I and the music is much better than the original. Sorry, I am not much help!

Christine - LOL - no, I can't piddle! Unfortunately! After I work out, it is one big rush to get ready. It is pretty much down to the minute! I get there at 8:00 on the dot! I wanna piddle! That is the one big drawback!!

Linda

Linda--thanks for the CC info--it's helpful!

Christine--sometimes I think I wake up early to piddle & putter...Linda has the right idea though, focus and get it done and get out the door.

-Barb

2.5 miles on the TM-DONE!

I'll be back in the morning and will catch up with the personals at some point during the day hopefully!:+

Ciao chicas!:*

>Jennifer...WOW...another half in 2 weeks....a tough cheetah!!

LOL tough or stupid? ;)

Seriously though, I am DYING to be more active right now than I am, but our coaches are being really strict with us and they don't want us to do any strenuous workouts (so basically, no Cathe LOL) until Nike is done.

I'm getting so jealous reading of you guys and your workouts :). I really wanted to start my SH rotation this week, but it looks like I won't be able to for another week and a half *sigh*. I'll probably do it for just 2-3 weeks because it's hard for me to fit in yoga and still get in 3 weight workouts and 3 cardio workouts a week. In fact, if I can't fit 3 weight workouts in, I may have to nix the SH rotation until the next TnT season and break in PUB/PLB and try to build some strength that way :). (Unless my pre-order arrives then--I'm going to do those DVD's first! ;))
