Cathe, Need Help with Love Handles

Hi Cathe, Thanks to you I have actually conquered my biggest body flaw which was a shelf butt and saddlebags. The shelf is no longer there and low-rise jeans look so good now. The saddlebags are still there, but way smaller and no longer bother me at all. But now I have a new problem. I'll be 44 years old next month, and it seems since I hit my 40s I've had trouble with love handles and a bit of a flabby stomach. My abs are still flat, thanks to you, but they are not pretty at all. How can I firm up through the midsection? I will admit that I can stand to lose about 10 pounds and was wondering if that is what it will take. Should I focus more on my diet and cardio and lose those 10 pounds or do I just need to incorporate my ab work? If it is more ab work, please explain what would be the best.

Thanks.

P.S. I am anxiously awaiting the new workouts. I preordered on the first day and never looked back. :)

Hi Kelley,

When I read your message I could have sworn I wrote it :) I am the same exact age and sounds like I have a very similar bodytype with the same problems!! I have noticed in the last couple years esp. that although my stomach is pretty flat I have gotten a bit flabbier. I also now have saddlebags which I hate...may I ask what you did that helped yours? I suspect the answer is most likely diet as I already train a LOT (I am a triathlete and marathoner and also do a lot of weight training and toning). Although the last 9 months have been a challenge for me because I traveled for work extensively last winter/spring and then had 2 surgeries in the summer...so my training hasn't been what it was before. But I'm getting back into it now and also looking forward to Cathe's new workouts to boost my training and hopefully see some good results! Anyway...had to answer your post because sounds like we have the same challenges...hope Cathe will answer. Take care

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl, Since incorporating Cathe kickboxing workouts and Gym Style Legs, I have gotten great results with the butt/outer thighs. I have had this problem all my adult life. I have always had to wear relaxed fit jeans because of my butt/legs. I am now able to buy some regular fit jeans. I went shopping last weekend and was so happy to try on some slacks and my thighs did not stick out. My diet has changed a little also, but I'm still bad. I think those workouts have had the biggest impact and not my diet.

Hi Kelley, thanks for answering and congrats on your great results so far! So how many times per week do you use the kickbox and GS Legs workouts? Are you using heavy weights for legs? For awhile I've been mostly using lighter weights more for endurance but am now trying to lift heavier. My diet needs improvement...or I should say consistency....I will do well for several days in a row and then blow it...mostly sweets those are my downfall :) I've always had
'hips' but the extra saddlebags are something new and not an attachment I wish to keep!! We'll get there...just have to keep at it, no other alternative really. Good chatting with you!

Hi Cheryl, I just use mainly Kick Max and Gym Style Legs once a week. I have also been trying to do Imax 2 once a week which is probably helping some also. I lift as heavy as I can on Gym Style Legs, but really this workout seems more endurance as there are a lot of pulsing movements and, of course, the treaded band work. }( I understand about the sweets. I recently started taking CLA (never thought I would use a dietary supplement ever) and this totally curved my cravings for sweets. I ran out this week and my cravings are back, so I'm going to buy more. I consulted with my OB/GYN at my checkup before taking them, and she said they should be fine. So I'm giving it a try.

Hi Kelley- thanks for the website- I just spent 45 min. looking at it-got lost in all that info.- I loved it--deb

Hi Kelley, thanks so much for your input! I decided to do a Hardcore rotation which includes the workouts you've said helps you and see how that goes. I'm also going to start diligently counting calories, to see where I'm at there. I think it is more important as we get older to be more diligent with our eating. Yeah I agree with GS legs being more of an endurance workout...which I don't mind since I'm trying to build back my endurance to do a marathon early next year. I do take the CLA also but it doesn't seem to be helping me with sugar cravings. But I may not be taking a high enough amount to get the full benefit...how much do you take daily?

I guess one question I really would like Cathe to answer is if she has found it more difficult to maintain and increase results from her fitness routine now that she's around 40 years old. And what she may do differently now than she did when she was younger to ahieve results.

Have a great day!

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl, I don't know the mg, but I'm taking the recommended amount as per the instructions on my bottle which is 2 pills 3 times a day with meals. I was running out of pills towards the end of last week and wasn't taking as many and could notice a difference.

Hi Kelley, I am to turn 46 in just a few months and have gained 15lbs for no reason, use to have a flat stomach and now look pregnant and my body fat was 19% one year ago and now is 29%. Doctors told me its normal for my age. Finally found a website, womentowomen.com and it explains alot. Went to a blood specialist and he told me that women of our age cannot burn carbs like we use to because of the hormone changes we are going thru. Put me on South Beach for one month to lose 10lbs and told me to kick up my cardio. Check out the website. I am also taking the vitamins they encourage for women and I feel much better and am on my way to losing those nasty 10lbs. Good Luck, Cheryl:)

Thank you Cheryl. I will definitely check out the website. And I had thought of trying the South Beach Diet. I may just have do it now. And I figured I would need to kick my cardio up a notch. Thanks again.

Hi Kelley! Congratulations on achieving your goals!!!! Glad you are loving those jeans. Funny, my jeans have replaced my tape measure lately. Jeans don't lie. Just be fair and don't try them on for measure straight out of the dryer  :7

I don't know if you have ever tried running, but that is what keeps my core in best condition. As soon as I cut back on my running I get little love handles within as little as two weeks if I don't eat clean.

Honestly, your genetics will have the last word in how trim we can get our core area. But before we give it a chance to say a word, try this for the next four weeks:

In addition to doing two weekly 40 to 60 minute cardio workouts of your choice, and a complete upper and lower body weight routine weekly....

1) Eat VERY clean healthy balanced meals. Be very true to yourself here.

2) Do a wide variety of core exercise three time per week for about 10 minutes a session. Work your upper abs, lower abs, oblique, and transverse muscles (ie: all kinds of crunches/planks/side to side movements/static holds, etc.)

3) Try to run or run/walk for about 2 miles, two to three times per week, for 4 weeks.

Good Luck!

Thank you so much Cathe. I really appreciate you taking time to answer my question. I have never been a runner, but have actually been able to make myself run a little on my treadmill. Right now my treadmill is at my sister's house. I'm going to see about getting it back this week and will start incorporating your ideas into my rotation. Again, thank you so much.

P.S. I can't wait for the new workouts. The clip looks great.

Yes thank you Cathe for the input and tips, I'll give those a try! I am a runner but because of travel, surgery, etc I had stopped running for awhile....which probably does explain my expanding waistline :) Thanks again,

Cheryl

a. Conclusion: Cathe always eats clean. Especially so, if she is not running.

b. Cathe, This makes me long all the more for mp3 workouts from you to coach the gym-goers. How else will we benefit from Cathe's running experience? Being coached by you on a treadmill will be fitness heaven. I ripped the hi-lo and weights premix from Step,Pump,Jump DVD soundtrack as an audio mp3 for my ipod. I ran / cycled or used elliptical during the hi-lo, matching the intenity to Cathe's cueing. And did the weights section absolutely to cue. Some guessed I was being cued - especially sinceI was varying tempo during the weights. They wanted to know where they could buy this "coaching" from for themselves. One person told me "You have rythym in your workout which is so unusual" LOL! Dont mean to harrass you with this. You replied with clarity and detail to my last post on this topic. Just trying to keep the idea on your radar.
