Bread--Friend or Foe?

Does anyone else feel as though bread is your worst enemy?

I took bread(the healthy, multigrain, low-cal, high fiber kinds) out of my diet completly and was pleasantly suprised at the difference it made. I recently added (I ask myself "why??" over and over) Thomas' Multigrain Light muffins back into my diet and feel as though my body has inflated (think of Marge in HP Prisoner of Azkaban) like a balloon. I didn't think these healthy little disks would be so traitorous. Alas, it's back to total avoidance! x(

I have a friend who tells me the same as you are describing. I can eat wheat bread though. Sometimes I do get heartburn but I love wheat bread and will never be able to drop it. I have never felt bloated from any bread but do think that white bread has a nasty flavor.

Friend! I feel badly for you as I adore bread and cannot live without it. I go for the very grainy, very complex carby kinds. You could be senstive to wheat or gluten. It's very common and casues the bloating gas and discomfort for those who can't metabolize it. My kids eat the whole wheat white but it is so yucky to me since it's obviously pulverized even if the fiber is added back in.

Bread is my long-time, very good friend. I love it. I love to eat it, I love to smell it fresh out of the oven, and I love to bake it.

But that said, I am trying to cut back on it to see what happens weight-wise, and am replacing it with more whole grains in their original form, instead of ground into flour. The jury is still out on the results... and I do let myself eat some every once in a while.

I know we aren't supposed to be 'afraid' of eating bread, whole grain breads, but I do limit my intake. I've never been a bread aholic so that helps but my H cannot refuse the bread basket when we dine out. When I was growing up my mother would put a plate with 4-5 slices of bread on it just for my father to eat at every meal. I have never known anyone else to do that. My father was a bread-aholic. I never knew him to eat a sandwich of any kind, but he had to have his sliced bread and butter with meals.

Besides bread, you could be sensitive to processed cereals too.

Some people truly are wheat and gluten sensitive....thank goodness I'm not. I simply love good multigrain spouted bread....the chewier the better. My heart goes out to you.

Bread is my friend! Not white squishy cake bread that stays 'fresh' for a month or so (I 'Wonder' how they do that).

I know where the day old bread section is in every bakery in my end of town and trust me, the freezer is full of the best of the best. I love sunflower rye breads and black olive rosemary breads and walnut whole grains and hazelnut raisin, and,..... I find that with these breads I add very little to them. A slather of peanut butter on toasted sunflower rye, a skim of cream cheese and roasted red peppers on black olive rosemary bread. Soooooooo good.:9

Take Care
Laurie:)

Even some supposedly "healthy' bread isn't. I had a loaf of Bakers Inn multigrain bread (that I didn't like, by the way: too "mushy" for me) that was in my fridge for 4 months, and when I finally dug it out to compost, imagining a green forest of mold on it, it was just a bit dried, and had not one speck of mold on!!

I just eat Food for Life sprouted bread. No grain flours, just ground sprouted grains (sprouting both increases nutrtional value and makes starches and proteins more digestible. Some people who have somewhat of an intolerance to grains can eat grain sprouts with no problem).

Tracie Long's nutritionist recommends eliminating grains from the diet.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I think eliminating or drastically reducing flour (which, because it is so finely ground is more quickly assimilated by the body) is not a bad idea.

Neal Barnard recommends avoiding flour (in cereals, breads, pastas, etc) and sticking with whole grains (barley, millet, quinoa, just about anything) to help with weight loss.

Food for Life also sell gluten and wheat free breads as well (Raisin Pecan and Pecan Rice just to name a few). Unfortunately, for some their Ezekiel 4: 9 Bread (which I like:9) has gluten in it which some people can't tolerate it.

I'm not sure I hold too much of what she says as gospel anyway...isn't she into the blood type eating theories as well? I must add I thought the women on the TLTs would look better than they do. I do hope this doesn't sound too catty or mean, but I was expecting them to be in much better shape. Heck, they're younger than me and working out is their full time job (I think). I'm not saying they look bad at all...but everyone on the site raves about how absolutely great they look. Maybe I just don't see it. I do admit though, I really love the TLT workouts.

I agree with both points:)

Just my 2 cents,
Robin

ETA: Now Cathe always looks great!!!;)

Robin...about the TLT girls...yes, 'cut' they are not. Tracey Long was quite lean in some of her earlier Firm workouts, such as "Tortoise" and "Hare" (1994) but she was the only Firm instructor who sported a muscular physique. The rest had more the dancer type lean-but-not-cut look.

There was one other Firm gal that was quite cut...can't think of her name. She was in later workouts...oh, I have to go dig into those old VHS and see if I can find her now!

I found her! Nancy Tucker...she was a buff babe in those days. I remember her having fantastic abs.

I love any bread of any kind by any name!!!! :9 :9 :9

I try to stick w/wheat bread as a rule these days but if it's not in the house then I'll eat ANYTHING! I LOVE IT and couldn't do it w/o it! I don't care if I'd drop 5 pounds instantly from taking it out of my diet...to me, it's just not worth it!:)

Huh... insteresting...

I actually wish that I was bread-sensitive so I wouldn't eat so much bread. I try not to eat too much carby stuff so I avoid eating bread too, but some are just soooooo good! Yum~!

Now I eat sweet potato or yam more than bread or rice to fulfill my carby-craves...:9

I guess I am the weirdo here. I just don't and never have liked bread of any sort. When I was a kid I used to lick the peanut butter and jelly off of my sandwich and throw the bread away.

Now if I could only feel the same way about cheese....}(
