Why don't I get a good workout with kickboxing drills?

I was just wondering if I am doing something wrong when it come to the kickbox type drills (kicking and punching). I feel like I'm wasting my time. Am I doing something wrong, is there some secret trick that I don't know about. I give it my all when I do these moves, however I feel I'm missing something. (For example the kick/punch drills at the end of KPC and beginning of Kickmax.)

Adrienne-
Without knowing your fitness level or seeing your form I'm not sure I can help. I do know that when I became stronger in my upper thru strength training I started really getting DOMs after my KB Drills... I didnt think I was putting more into it but I guess I was.
It is so worth the time to make sure your form is perfect and that you are getting your heart rate up (another indicator you are putting alot of effort into the punches)... Check your stance as well... The stance actually allows you to be able to give more power.
Also: Try doing the mix n match of the drills 1st- before anything else (after warm up of course) so you are not fatigued at all then do the rest of workout.
Hope that helps.... keep at it as those drills have given me arms I never dreamed of! Its worth the effort to figure it out I think.
Kick Max & Cardio Kicks also have killer arm drills btw!

Hello,
I do not have kick max, but I have been doing KPC. When I first got the dvd I HATED the kick boxing drills. I felt exactly as you did. However, knowing Cathe is of good judgement re: exercise, I persisted. I have now perfected the moves, and added the jump kicks right away in drill 1. I feel it's the hardest part of the workout. Keep at it, I was just thinking today that you really need to perfect the movements in a workout to get the best results. Don't give up on them.

I am having a similar problem as Adrienne. Although the blasts in the kickboxing videos get my heart rate up, the kick/punch combos just dont do it for me. Also, I have a hard time getting all the small lower movements in--hip turns etc--that give the punces their power.

If any of you have access to a heavy bag or a punching bag, I'd recommend practicing your punches on that. You'll know when you're doing it right because suddenly you'll feel that if the bag were an attacker, you might actually hurt him/her.

An affective punch uses your entire body. And it's not really a small movement. To give you an idea, cross your arms across your chest (you won't use them at all) and imagine you need to hit someone with your shoulder only. How would you do that? You'd pivot your body and put more power behind it by using your lower body as well - maybe crouch a bit on your rear leg and use that as a spring to drive your shoulder into them, right? Get that feeling down - try it a few times. Now, do the same thing, but add a punch at the end - that's how a punch should be done - the arm extension is almost inconsequential.

That being said, my HR does not get up as high on the combos in either KPC or KM as it does on the drills - simply because there's a lot of down time learning them. I have used other videos that have less break down and my HR soars with them.

RE: Why don't I get a good workout with kickboxing dril...

When you work out doing step aerobics, you are ruled by the height of your step to some extent. Of course, arm motions and impact on the step can always add to the workout.

You get what you put into kickboxing. I always wear weighted gloves, (one pound each), and I exaggerate my arm motions, and I often put impact in when there is none. When I first began to kickbox, I always wondered why my heart rate did not go up in the same way as it did with other activities. Then I began to wear the one pound gloves and put more of myself into it.

It is possible to get a great workout with kickboxing.

One of my favorites is kickboxing!!! I had a hard time finishing it, the KPC, but last week I finally did and I felt GREAT!!! Of course, the next day I was hurting EVERYWHERE!!!! But it was a good pain. I put a lot of effort into getting it right and I just LOVE the kicks!!

I can tell that my body strenght has increased because I had to stop a lot when I first tried the KPC session.

I am able to do it now. I have a little probelm with jumps, though. I have to get me new shoes!! ;-)

I always felt that way about KPC too. I did just the combo portion yesterday (the kicking and punching premix). I wore my HRM for the first time and was able to see that my heart rate really does get up there. I always felt like it didn't because I didn't jump and move my feet as much. I burned 350 calories and reached 180 BPM! Have you tried wearing an HRM to really see if you are getting a good workout?

I wonder how many I am burning! I did again today and it was hurting a bit on the back of my thighs.... Doing the hammer punch was a bit difficult! I couldn't go all the way down to do the punch, but went as far as I could without hurting myself... ;-)

Do you do anything else when you do kickboxing?

i did in addition to it the crunches she has on the Basic Step video.

RE: Why don't I get a good workout with kickboxing dril...

The 350 calories was JUST for the premix--28 minutes of kicking and punching and 8 minutes of abs, and the stretch. The drills (like the hammer punch you're referring to) kick my butt a lot more than the combos. I would be curious to see how many calories the whole workout burns--I'll have to check it out someday.:)

I know it wasn't as much fun until I finally got my arms coordinated enough for the different punches. Now that I know the combos, I can really get into them--I get quite a bounce going!:D

RE: Why don't I get a good workout with kickboxing dril...

For the most part, I find kickboxing to be much more low impact and for the reason I can focus more on the intensity of the workout rather than on being careful about my knees. I think I get a good workout with kickboxing also.

I think knowing and using proper kickboxing form makes a big difference in how much you get out of a kickboxing style workout. You really have to follow through on the punches, turn your hips properly, and use all of your body to propel the punches and kicks. Hard to explain if you're not familiar w/ good kickboxing form. I used to train at a kickboxing gym and learned my form there - it's made a huge difference in how effective kickboxing workouts are for me. I love kickboxing - I always get a great workout w/ both KPC and Kickmax. I Tae Bo sometimes too and love that as well.

I agree.
Once you have form down, you have power not just in the punches and kicks going out, but in 'braking' them as well. And as you get more advanced, you can punch and kick with more power.
It seems to me like a beginner and an advanced kickboxer could do the same workout, and the advanced person would get more intensity out of it just for those reasons.

I do find that, once you've got form down, using weighted gloves (not in the warm-up or cool-down portions, starting with maybe 1/2# or 1# used for part of the workout, working up to using 1# for the entire body of the workout).
