Who Asked You??

Why do people who don't have a clue chime in all the time??

I was at a wedding on Saturday night and one of DH's school friend's was there. He is into politics so you know what that's like. He usually ask a ton of questions and acts like he is interested when really he isn't.....actually, he isn't even really listening.

He started asking me how far I run each day? Well you know...that varies b/c I have been training for a marathon. So he ask on average so I give him some distances. Then he ask "what's the furtherest you have ever ran" So I tell him and then he tells me I am going to have a heart attack....and then he goes outside for his smoke! And IM the one who is going to have the heart attack?

My manager as been repeating to many times how I am going to need a knee replacement some day.....and then he goes to the fridge, while pulling up his pants over his extra large body...to get a cookie for the 10th time that day. And IM the one who will need things replaced??

Where do these people come from? Who makes them??;)

I have (over time) summed it up to jealousy. People who don't have the discipline to do what we do, try to bring us down by putting doubts in our heads. US not doing anything, will make THEM feel better about the lives they live. Am I not right here?

Lori:)

That's interesting that you get these responses from people about your active workout life. I've never had any negativity from others, only admiration.

I would venture to say that it is not jealousy that motivates the people in your life to react the way they do. If it were jealousy, I would guess they would be trying to emulate you. Most people who are jealous want what you have for themselves. Obviously, being healthy and fit isn't something they desire.

I think they probably just don't understand. For them, running long distances seems painful and time consuming. They have never experienced anything like it, so they react by questioning the validity of what you're doing.

I would chalk it up to just different ways of thinking. Feel sorry for them because they will never know the joy of what you've accomplished. But attributing jealous feelings to them is probably a stretch.

Congratulations on your training for the marathon! Way to go!

I'd say jelousy that is also masking their guilt over poor lifestyle choices. My mom has told me several times how her OB/GYN told her if women knew what running did to their insides they would never do it. I just saw my dad go through a triple bypass last month. I'll take my chances on the running!

OMG. That has to be the most ridiculous sounding thing I have ever heard! And coming from someone in the medical field as well!!!:rolleyes::confused:

Glad you chose not to listen!;)

Wow, that's weird! What does the OB think it does - scramble our eggs or something?

My mom's comments to me are very similar... she says she's afraid my heart will explode. And then she smokes, sits on my couch and eats pastries... Just let it roll off... That's what I do. Otherwise, I'd be plum CRAZY!

Well, in whatever possible defense I can give the doc, I think she was told this a number of years ago. And I have read in Runners World there was a study in the 70s reporting - falsely of course - something like that. And even if it does "scramble my eggs" :) it hasn't stopped me from having 3 kids!

I love the image of the sitting on the couch smoking and eating pastries. This is why we don't seek advice from those who are inactive. Although they obviously like to chime in at times!

I think (some) non-runners just don't know/understand. My martial arts teacher warned me not to run or I would shake my uterus loose(!). A friend of mine who is a regular exerciser but not a runner told me running long distances is 'not natural' - meaning the human body is not intended to run long distances.

Marathon Training Academy (podcast) just had an episode where they talked about this very scenario (misconceptions) about running.

I just nod my head and keep running when I hear these comments. :)

I've never heard anyone say running messes up your insides. So, that's a new one for me.
I do think it can be hard on the joints and back, particularly if you never mix up your cardio to include low impact stuff.

ITA (and JeanneMarie put it so well, it saves me some typing!

People seem very quick to put others reactions down to 'jealousy,' and I do think it's often overreaching.

I think it's people simply trying to justify their own unhealthy habits.

Those people are telling you the excuses they tell themselves. They know they should be working out, but they fear a heart attack or bad knees. It's not a knock on you.

In a word, 'Haters'. They make themselves feel better by putting someone else down...when they know what that person does is admirable. And I say to heck with them.

I have one in my karate class. She is the 'smile in your face with the knife ready to plunge in your back' type. I've put up with her not so subtle insults and topping me on every thing I say for over a year. For example, she will ask how long I worked out the night before, if I say an hour, she'll say she workouted out for two hours. If I lose 5 lbs, she's lost 10. The funny thing is she has no idea how transparent she it. She has been away for a few months and it was heaven. She came back this last week and within five minutes she had made a snarky remark (all while smiling) in the changing room, then after class she made another one. Both aimed at me. Because there were other people in the room I let it go, but I'm not putting up with her crap this time around. She has had time to make peace with whatever the hell her issue is with me. If she can't do then I will do it for her! And no, I won't make a scene. I have had experience with her type too many times. I can cut someone off at the knees all with an even tone and a smile on my face. I will be kind but direct the first time I talk to her, but there had bettter not be a need for a second talk.

You are so right.

Its jealousy. Also, that moron who said you will need a knee replacement is just that. Since I began running (both on/off road shorter distances 5-10k) I have dramatically improved my bone density, muscle/ligament/tendon strength around both ankle/knee. When I was a kid I was always getting these twisted ankles and when I started off road (soft, major hills, ground giving way underneathe my feet.) I started using lateral motions and all of a sudden those areas got stronger. I might have been headed for a knee replacement if I hadn't started running but now, I'm confident!

As for the heart attack: say what:eek:? When I started running I had these puny little blood vessels that always collapsed and were hard for the nurse to find and draw blood. But, when I started running, the requirement for more oxygen forced my body to basically retrofit itself and my entire circulation system improved to the point where I can find a vein easily now. So, in other words, he is nuts. You knew that, but just giving my 2 cents.

Umm. My ob/gyn told me to lose weight and to do the cardio to help improve my insulin resistance, my hormone profile, my endometriosis, PCOS, and my other GP told me to do the exercise for my IBS. mmm. Well, all I can say is, I feel better;)

My back is fine. But, I can see how the variety might be good. I personally, don't run everyday, I cross train with Cathe.

SOOOO TRUE
