What kind of veggie steamer do you use?

In the last 2 years I've been through 2 of those wooden steamers you use w/woks. I use it almost every night & they keep falling apart on me. Yesterday I found mold on it! EW!

Is there any alternative to a steel pot? Or should I just break down & use that instead?

I have a steam pot you put on top of your stove. I like it but hate waiting for the water to start boiling. It really works well, though.

i have a regular plug in steamer but i also have a bamboo one.

i use the plug in one b/c its easier. its hard enough with stuff on the stove it just helps me with one less thing.

Laura...here's one VERY similar to the one I have:
http://www.shoposter.com/product_detail.asp?T1=OST 5711&HDR=OSTSTEAM
Mine is about 9 years old and going strong. I use it so often that the numbers on the dial wore off about 3 years ago! lol It comes with a rice cooking bowl and is perfect for making/steaming brown rice. (the link I shared comes with an egg thingy to steam eggs, but since mine is older I don't have that...but that would be cool).

I love my Oster!

OMG! Must have it! I thought I was saving by buying the wooden steamers b/c they're about $12, but if I have to buy 2 a year that's not good economics. ;) Thanks Gayle!

Debbie, I usually start the water right when I get home. That way after I'm changed & ready to start dinner it's ready for the veggies.

BTW, I had no idea there was such a thing as electric steamers. This has been very educational for me. :)

I LOVE, I mean LOVE, my Pampered Chef Large Micro-Cooker. It never does me or my veggies wrong :) I think it cost me around $9 or $10. Cooks rice too!!

I have a metal basket (goes in the pot) as well as a three tiered steamer that I got at the neighborhood garage sale. Still new in the box.

Lisa, you're right about the Pampered Chef Micro Cookers. I have those as well and use them often when I'm in a hurry. But I like to truly steam the veggies instead of putting the water in WITH the veggies....but those ARE A GREAT PICK TOO!

My DS & DIL got a steamer like the one Gayle posted. It works great and is also a rice cooker. They use it all the time when I'm up there if we're having steamed veggies. Cooks artichokes quite quickly !

Gayle,
I've been checking out that Oster steamer you posted and I want it!! It looks cool AND it steams eggs!! I'm pretty sure it's time for an upgrade :)

I try to use as little water as possible in the Micro-cooker but it would be nice to skip the water and have just "straight up veggies".

Thanks for link and the enabling!! ;)

Lisa, you'll LOVE that Oster, I promise! If not, I'll buy it from you! ;) I want the egg do-thingy!

I wish I'd known you about five years ago; you could have had ours. We donated ours to Goodwill! It took up too much space and did nothing that a sauce pan couldn't do. We use the cheapo metal steamer insert for veggies.

I have a Cuinanart stainless steel steamer that I am not sure they even make any more. I have had it for 20 years. It has a round bottom pot with handles that you can use for other things, a large steamer basket and a domed cover. It is fairly large. My DIL has requested it in my will! I kid her that her name is on the bottom so she will be sure and get it. You can steam your food, empty the bottom pot of water and then serve the food in it. Great pot!

Just thought I'd share.....I just loaded my Oster with BOTH baskets filled with stuffed. Sweet potatoes and carrots on the top basket, green beans, onions and squash in the bottom basket. BOTH filled to the MAX, ready to be set and plugged in for dinner. Try THAT with a metal steam basket! :p (I AM just joking, ladies. All in good fun.) I have tried the metal steamer, but with the amount of stuff I steam every day and prepare ahead of time, this double basket just is the ticket FOR ME)!

ENJOY whatever you got!

I'm a kitchen gadget, small electrics fan so this purchase is extra exciting for me!!! :D
