What a disappointing lunch substitution

Today I decided to substitute my daily 100 Calorie Pack of Oreo Crisps with 8 oz. of skim milk and an apple. I'm adding more protein to my diet, so I decided milk was a nice low-calorie and healthy source. But...that's an extra 90 calories and I had to figure out where I could cut something else out. And so....goodbye Oreos. How I've loved you....

The apple and milk weren't nearly as satisfying.:(

You know what they say. An apple a day .....

That didn't help much, did it? x(

How about...you're doing the right thing. Yeah, I didn't think so :-(

Got one....you'll get over it, eventually :)

Check out the reduced-fat oreo cookies? I used them for my chocolate needs lots of times! (Not that I'm advocating store-bought, preservative-laden, trans-fat goods, but....) ;p

Those oreo crips were pure empty calories. They're made of white sugar and flour and artificial junk. They have no nutritional value whatsoever, and, even worse, they create cravings for more junk. The milk and the apple, on the other hand, have lots of antioxidants, calcium, vitamins and minerals. They are jam-packed calories.

Did that help?

I have a couple of suggestions for ya instead of the apple/milk thing that you might find more "exciting"....Do you like low fat cottage cheese or peanbut butter? I use them both for extra protein...I happen to really like cottage cheese but the peanut butter is especially yummy for me! :)...putting peanut butter on an apple is pretty darn tastey too!

Have a great work out!

Swop the apple for a bowl of strawberries that have been sliced and lightly sugared for an hour, it pulls all the juices out. Yum. So much more taste than an apple, more special and Summery, plus one of the best sources of Vit C around. Way more than an apple.

Vary your fruit: papaya one day, pineapple another, raspberries, etc. Winter fruit can be soooooo dull (apple, orange, banana), I'm so sick of it!

And also, I'd up the skim milk to 2%. Better flavour all round.

But you are doing something good for yourself, you know that, don't you?!??!?

Clare :)

How about putting a scoop of chocolate protein powder in vanilla yogurt?? Mega protein and you cure the chocolate sweet tooth. If you want something crunchy..What about a handful of nuts and some dry fruit?? I know that when I want a chocolate fix an apple and milk just wouldn't cut it..lol

Okay first off...I don't see how anyone could eat Oreos...blech!! :p

Second, eating healthy foods is just plain better for you. What nutritional content does an oreo crisp contain? A snack of fruit/vegetables provides your body with the proper fuel you need. I know, it's hard to look at a apple vs a cookie and find love...but once you break that sugar habit you really will feel better. I could sit here and recite studies on the sugar overload we American's call eating everyday. I could give you statistics on the increase in adult diabetes, not to mention childhood diabetes. I could go on and on beating you up with WHY you shouldn't eat sweets all the time...and eating sweets daily is too much. But you know what...breaking any bad habit is hard work. You are addicted to sugar and it's going to take time for you to mentally let go of eating junkie sugary treats and finding satisfaction in a proper snack like fruit, vegetables, nuts, cheese, etc.

But here's a tip: when you're trying to decide what to take for your snack ask yourself if the food choice you are making is processed or a whole food. You're working out so you stay in shape and have a healthy body. Don't sabotage all your hard sweat by eating crap.

So, congratulation's on taking that first step of improving what you put into your body. In time and with lots of practice you'll find passing by those Oreo crips in the store is much easier. Maybe you'll even find you no longer need to go down that processed foods isle of your grocery store. THEN you will have really accomplished your goal to improve your attitude towards food and eat a cleaner diet.

You know, I can't eat fruits without feeling hungrier afterward than before. I'll eat a grapefruit or an apple and within 15-20 minutes, I'm famished!!! Does anyone know what causes this? Coz I'd love to eat apples and grapefruit more often. Does anyone else have this problem?

From what I've read (and this is anecdotal information) fruit metabolizes very quickly since it contains very simple sugars. This causes more of an insulin spike, which stimulates hunger. If I eat citrus, I get this effect. Bananas, apples, berries and grapes don't have quite the impact on my appetite.

Add a bit of protein/fat to the fruit, which takes longer to digest and is more satisfying. An apple spread with peanut butter is an example.

I actually find both apples and bananas rather satisfying.

You all are giving such good recommendations, but I'm already covered with them. I have peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat for my lunch "entree". Then I have nonfat plain yogurt with either raspberries and pineapple, or blueberries and strawberries as an afternoon snack. I also have a hard-boiled egg white as a mid morning snack, and another one on my lunch salad.

I think I may throw the Oreo Crisps in every couple days...

If I could find something crunchy, that might help. Please don't suggest carrots or celery!:)

I like to eat protein with fruits like apples and pears. It helps to fill you up and their is some claim among doctor's that eating fruit with protein decreases the insulin spike. (from a diabetic cookbook).

So, I like to pair apples with peanut butter and use the pb as a dip. I love to eat cheddar cheese with pears. That is just a natural and very delish together. My kids like to eat sliced bananas on top of bread and peanut butter. Melons are also a good snack item and can be eaten with just about anything...a small portion of left over chicken breast with honeydew and cantalope. You get the jist of what I'm saying. When you're planning your snack of fruit just pair it with some form of protein, even nuts.

And of course cottage cheese goes with any fruit and that combo makes for a great breakfast.

YES!! I thought there was something wrong with me. hahaha I eat an apple every afternoon at 4. By the time I get home from work at 5:30, I can eat everything in site. Totally famished.

You know... we work damn hard. If we can't have Oreo Crisps (not that I even know what those are - we don't have them here in the frozen wasteland that is Canada!) every now and then, we might as well just pack it all in!

I say have the Crisps every other day. When you're 90 and looking back at your life, are you gonna say "boy I really loved that apple and milk every day" or are you gonna say "MAN those Oreo Crisps were delicious"?;)
