Valerie Bertinelli's workout

On Oprah's website she has a video of Valerie's exercise routine. In one exercise, she is on the floor with her hands holding the ankles of someone standing at her head. She raises her legs up and towards her head and the other person pushes them down. Can someone explain this exercise to me. What you are supposed to do and what the exercise works. Thanks.

That exercise is working her lower abs. I'd be careful doing them that fast, however, that could cause some low back damage.

Valerie is so damn cute! She looks really good. Her hard work is really showing!

Wow - she looks great! Yes, those are abs but you can do those by yourself too - just slowly. I lie on my back, keeping it flat on the floor by pushing abs down flat, if that makes sense (you don't want to arch your back) and starting with legs straight up, I slowly lower them to almost the floor and then come back up until I can't do anymore. If you can't do both at the same time, start with alternating sides, keeping one hovering straight out, just parallel with the floor but not touching while the other leg is straight up, so your legs make and L and as the one leg lowers, raise the other leg and continue on.

ITA with everything Debbie said (cuteness and lower abs). You can easily get the same benefit on a Roman Chair and holding a medicine ball between your bent knees. It takes out the momentum, but adds weight, which is wonderful. However, if the shoulders cannot hold up the body that's a problem. You can also do the same thing hanging from a bar, but the hands/fingers/forearms might fatigue before the abs.

She has worked so hard and is adorable.

I read a lot of Chad Waterbury over at FigureAthlete.com/T-Nation.com and he's BIG on doing most exercises at a fairly brisk pace. He also recommends women not using weight when doing most ab work to avoid becoming thick-waisted. He and friend/sister-trainer Valerie Waters are in the heart of Hollywood where all the women are after that fit hourglass form they see on celebrity women. Being a celeb, it makes sense that Bertinelli would also embrace this approach. Fast (but controlled) moves are kind of becoming the new thing, it seems. Waterbury explains the science behind it but I'm a lousy interpreter. The fast-but-controlled approach to lifting is a hotly debated topic over at FA/TN every time Waterbury writes about it.

But VB... Her body looks even hotter in this video than in those bikini pictures. Her arms are incredible. I love this chick and think she deserves to be a smokin' man-magnet. I think her boyfriend, working out with her, is pretty hot, too. I pray she doesn't fall backwards but I think, somehow, she won't. Once you're over the age of 45 it becomes a now-or-never do-or-die thought process. At 48, I may slip now and then but only for a moment. I know I'll never be fat again. Man, Bertinelli is a great example.

She looks great!

WOW!! She looks fantastic!!! I wouldn't have recognized her.

She looks like she is very much into her exercise program. I have a much better feeling with her than Kirstie Alley.

I just saw a picture of KA the other day and I think it is so sad! She has gained all her weight back and then some.

Way to go though, Valerie!!!

Good for Valerie!! She's worked hard and it shows and she deserves a lot of credit for turning things around. And it had to be hard to do that under so much public scrutiny. You never hear anything about Kirstie anymore so I kind of figured she gained her weight back.

Leg lifts are great for your abs. To work the sides you can do center, side, center, other side. I used to be able to do almost 150 of those in a minute & 1/2!

why didn't they take photos of her like that. she looks damn good. i didn't see the whole spread(was it us or people magazine?) but i wasn't impressed with the cover honestly its like yeah she lost weight but when she flexed that arm in this vid. dang girl you rock on!

kassia

ETA:not sure the whole story on her divorce but i bet eddie is kicking himself now LOL

I just saw her commercial with the bathing suit and then bikini. She looks fantastic and who is she kidding it sure looks like she's got ripped abs to me. Maybe because I'm older I really appreciate people who lose weight when they are older. I love her as a spokes person for Jenny Craig much better than that Kristie girl. I wonder how Queen Latifia is doing?

Not discounting her hard work, the lady sure was born with the 'magic genes'. The Divine Ms. Obama's got nothin' on those guns...;)
