Update on my teaching at YMCA!

Connie1

Cathlete
Tomorrow night after work I have an appointment to fill out paperwork and "sign on" to the roster of YMCA employees! Until yesterday I was expecting to be a step aerobic sub instructor for a while, but yesterday the coordinator told me by e-mail that there are two classes available!

She wrote that she will give me more details tomorrow night. I am so excited!:p

I'm also a little nervous! I have only taught one class before, and my technique is not smooth! The microphone and everything was really novel, and it was hard to hear the music when my own voice drowned it out.

Also I was sick last Wednesday night, and it is taking all this time to get any energy back. I have not worked out and my appetite went 180 degrees. It seems like either a stomach virus or just my body getting fed up with the same thing day in and day out.
Whatever.

So I feel like I'm a bit deconditioned. Oh well, it's par for the course. I know people can have entire babies and then get back into their routines, so I'll relax about it.

I'll tell you all the details on Thursday! :D

Connie that is awesome! Congratulations! I know you'll be fantastic and everyone will love you! Don't worry the energy will come back and I imagine you'll have adrenaline running as well so you'll be well fueled! Can't wait to hear more...hope you don't mind, I'm enjoying following your fitness journey! You've been an inspiration to me!

Congratulations Connie! Getting a teaching place with YMCA must make you feel wonderful. Well done to you.

I recently passed my instructors course with YMCA and have taught only a couple of classes since (got one tonight actually) it's terrifying sometimes isn't it but it feels great when everyone is moving together doing the same thing. It's a great feeling.

You must be competent enough at what you're doing so go in there and give it you're all!!! Good luck and let us know how it went.

I am so excited for you, Connie! I'm studying for the ACE Group Fitness Instructor exam & am right behind you! I hope to start teaching this summer.

You go girl!

Multo congratulations, Connie! I knew this would happen! Once a facility gets a feel for an instructor's capabilities, she's pretty much in!

Like anything else, instructing is a skill that is built with doing, doing, doing. Just keep at it, and the technique, AND the free-flowing creativity, will follow. I remember my first few months as an instructor I planned all my classes fairly closely, and then eventually was able to let go of pre-planning and trust that once the music started and I got in the water, it would just happen. You'll start thinking like an instructor, both inside and outside the studio, in no time at all. In fact, pretty soon you'll hear a song on the radio and think, "Hmmm . . . I could do THIS with THAT song in class . . ."

Congratulations again, and keep us posted!

Connie-
Good for you! Way to go! I agree with you. I don't understand how people have "entire" babies and then get back to their routines so fast, but I do think for you that the adrenaline will take over and you'll be great! DO relax about it! :D

That's great, Connie! I admire your dedication and even though I don't know you, I can tell by your informed, well-thought out posts, that you'll make a wonderful instructor. Best of luck!

Congrats Connie and best of luck. As A-Jock says, instructors make mistakes sometimes and err on the side of over-planning to begin with, and then your confidence grows and you just fly by the seat of your pants sometimes and also, sometimes those are the best classes!

And yes, I also loved the whole "entire babies" bit!

Congratulations Connie! You fully deserve it. I've read your story and I know you'll continue to be an inspiration to people.

Hi Janice and hi everyone!

Well, I got hired on Wednesday night and I am on the sub list. The hiring process took one hour and a half! The YMCA is a huge organization. Even though I have only taught one step class, I am on the list to sub floor aerobics, body sculpting, etc.

Today (Friday) I went into the Y and took a one-hour stretch class. This is a really neat class for most participants who go 5 days a week. The other days in this time slot (8 a.m.) there are step, kickbox, and strength classes. Fridays, however, at 8 a.m. the hour is devoted to an athletic stretch. This is neither Yoga nor Yoga-inspired.

I took the class so I'd know how to sub it. I plan on taking all the classes that I will sub so I'll know what the participants are used to. This will help me get back into the swing of working out, too.

It was fun being in a room full of live people! The director told me that this class might be available some time soon. It seems like a nice slot and nice format. So I might end up teaching it.

Even though I haven't worked out in ten days, my hamstrings are still a tiny bit residually sore and feel like they need stretching. It felt good.

I plan to do a bunch of subbing and then, if there's a class I end up subbing a lot and it's a good fit, let it go from there. I'm reveling in my new free membership! ;)

Thanks for reading all about my latest endeavor!

Bye for now.

Hi Connie! Sorry I missed this post the other day. Glad all went well. That is great that you are able to take all the different classes. It will definitely help you find your niche. Not to mention a FREE membership! Woo-Hoo! Glad you are feeling better. I've been under the weather myself with an injury and then an awful sinus infection. Talk about sore ribs! (from coughing soooo much!) Keep us posted and congratulations on getting hired. You've worked very hard for this.

Hi, Connie! You know this stuff and you will excel at whatever they call upon you to do. I agree with A-Jock. It just takes getting a few classes under your belt and it won't be so frightening any more. Once the fear is gone, you take it and make it your own! You will be wonderful I am sure. And remember to always show those abs to inspire your class! They are my inspiration! :)

Connie I am SO happy for you!! I just know you'll do a wonderful job no matter which class you teach!! I think that's a great idea taking the classes which you might be required to sub. With all the planning you're doing, you're sure to be a success!!
