Ugh my boss is a crook!

Okay what would you do if your boss was participating in unethical and illegal buisness practices? My boss asks me to lie to patients and I refuse to do so. He also has pocketed patient refunds and not given them back to the patients and worse of all he is currently operating on patients without all the legal city permits (the construction is not complete on the new office, there is no ceiling and flooring, no city permit, fire permit, nothing, nada). I can't believe that the city has not shut him down! What would you do? If I report him I lose my job and jobs are sparse around here and worse of all I cause a huge rift in my family by boss is my brother in law. :( And yes, I've already told them how I feel.

That's the definition of "between a rock and a hard place"
:confused::confused::confused:
Wish I had some good advice.....hope you get some! Good luck!

It depends on how strongly you feel about his illegal activities. If you can still look yourself in the mirror everyday and sleep at night AND can live with yourself looking the other way, then do nothing, stay quiet and live with it. If it is keeping you awake at night, affecting your health, can't eat and can't look yourself in the mirror, turn him in and deal with the consequences knowing you did what you believed was right.

I'm not saying I know what I would do, but it seems to me you only have those two choices and the final choice is yours to make.

I don't envy you the position your in. I will say that I would stand behind you whatever you decided.

Stay strong and make whatever decision you believe is the right one.

Hmmm

What will happen if something bad happens as a result: something happens to a patient (dies?) or he gets caught before that happens, then what? Can you be implicated in anything? You'll be out of a job probably anyway. Permits are required for a reason. Then I wonder what else he's doing that you may not know about.

Ignoring everything else, your boss is STEALING from patients and if you know about it, and don't report it, you can be viewed as part of the scam from a legal standpoint.

He WILL get caught, it's just a matter of time. Do you want to be part of that?

I understand you need the job, but don't his patients need their $$ too? Aren't they also struggling for every $ in this economy?

Finally, like someone else said, if he's doing all this and you KNOW about it, what else is he doing that you DON'T know.

IMO, no job is worth all that.

Janie,

I agree with Jonahnah. You don't want to be part of this. I understand that you need a job but can you really live with something like this? It's wrong and illegal. Your integrity and character are worth more than a job and your brother-in-law. Doing the right thing is always the hardest thing to do.

{{{Hugs}}} to you,

From your perspective I see that it's a difficult choice, but from the patients' perspective, it's a no brainer. And they matter the most. Good luck to you!

Personally, if I were in your situation I'd check with a lawyer to find out what the legal obligations are and aren't, as well as personal civil and criminal exposure is or isn't. This is a truly untenable situation for you on your own front and on the patients' front.

Good luck.

Talk to a lawyer - there are protections for you under "whistleblower" laws. If you don't report criminal activity, you can be considered a co-conspirator. Also, you say "operating on patients." I don't know what kind of operating you're referring to, but you're potentially playing with people's lives here. Not worth it.

Thanks everyone. Really thanks. I appreciate all the responses. Truth is that Tricia hit the nail on the head, . . I can't sleep at night or look at myself in the mirror knowing that I've told him how I feel and have done nothing more to help these patients. I mean how mad would you be if your dentist was refusing to inform you or give you a $1000.00 refund? I clip coupons and throw a party when I get my Whole Foods pizza for buy one get one free. That money could really help that person pay for food, gas, whatever they wanted, . . the point is that it is their money not his and to me it IS stealing. Shoot the timing sucks being Christmas and all but I think I made my decision to quit even before I posted this. The opinions that I get here really mean a lot to me because I KNOW you all will tell me like it is, whether you agree with me or not but still show support. Thanks

While you may need the job, think about the legal costs you may have to incur to defend yourself in the event he is caught and you are charged as an accessory or accomplice. Best of luck

Is quitting enough? It wouldn't be for me. You've got to take that next step and make it right. You know you do.

You are right Tracy. I called the dental board yesterday and filed an anonymous report. They will perform an audit and then require the Dr. to pay the refunds plus interest. I turned in my resignation notice this morning and e-mailed a detailed report to my sister (who is the office manager) showing them the list of people who are due refunds. I told them that they need to do what is right and that I can't be a party to what is happening. This is sure to put a damper on my family Christmas get together. :(

Try not to let it dampen your festivities too much Janie. THEY are in the wrong and should be ASHAMED of themselves. You took the high road and you should be proud of yourself. I am. :)

GOOD FOR YOU!! You should be so proud of yourself! You did the absolute right thing :)

It is never easy to the right thing when you are surrounded by those who would prefer to do what is wrong. In the end it may be tough on you to find another position, but in your heart and mind you know you did what you had to do.

YOU ROCK GIRL!!! :):)

Re: a damper on the family Christmas get-together, in the long run, that's peanuts!

Now, you can look yourself in the eye and know in your heart, YOU made a difference. When you teach your children about doing the right thing no matter how hard, you'll know you're practicing what you preach. Those patients now stand a chance of getting what rightfully belongs to THEM! Just think how much $1000 might mean to any of those families!

One muted Christmas celebration (among jerks & a thief!) is a small price to pay for all that. Retaining your self-worth? Priceless. :)

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU!!
