I live in the country... not too many gyms around here, so I switched to working out at home. I like it a lot better because I don't have to look cute to go to the gym, and it's private (I can grunt and curse at Cathe all I want), and my gym "commute" is about 10 seconds down the basement stairs. :)

I know this is off the topic but I go to the gym once in a while, usually if I am out of town. I went while in Chicago. I found it very interesting that I saw so many women walking in and out of the gym "pulling" their gym bag on wheels. The bags weren't very big so I kept thinking - why are they not carring them? I haven't been to the gym in a while but is this common a lot now? I thought I was at the airport

I work out at home unless I'm in a cardio coach mood. Then I go to Planet Fitness and hit the elliptical. At $10 a month I couldn't buy an elliptical that cheap---not a decent one anyway!

Can I vote for more than one? It's easier, more convenient, I get more variety, and I tend to get a better workout at home than at the gym. Besides, it helps me to have someone to 'follow along', at least with videos. I also have an elliptical machine at home. Oh, and I like being able to wear what I want when working out and not having to leave the house first thing in the morning to go to the gym.

If I could afford a gym membership, you'd better believe I would take one up. I can't bear being in the house all cooped up all the time.

RE: The primary reason I work out at home rather than t...

I voted that I work out at home AND the gym.

I do MOST of work outs at home but I do love to hit the gym for the cardio machines. ESPECIALLY the TM.

I don't live close to a gym. I finally found one that I can drive by on my way home, but it was too crowded. I also couldn't be sure that the classes they offered were advanced enough. So, I stick with my DVDs. I know what I'm getting and can do it anytime I want.

I definetely get a more effective workout at home. I was a gym rat for years but didn't know how to lift haeavy (nor do I have the motivation without Cathe). Once I got more into doing Cathe's workouts, I got stronger and leaner and my workouts vary much more now.

I workout at home and at the gym. I workout at home on weekdays because I like to do it before work and that means getting up at 5 am. I don't want to have to get up earlier and shower at the gym and all that. On the weekends when I have more time I head to the gym to add some variety to my routine.

I have a gym membership for the cardio machines (a little more variety), but I rely more on my at home workouts. I get privacy first and foremost. I can focus on my workouts better. Plus, the gym I belong to is of a Spandex meat market with a bunch of gossip mongers. So I meet up with the bf one or two times per week and use the treadmill for a bit of variety.

As a single mom (well, I am getting ready to get married, but anyway), there is just no way I would do it any other way. No way on earth would I work out 8 hours, pick up my child from preschool, take him to the gym daycare while I workout, then come home and put him to bed.

Being an involved mom is more important to me than fitness. Luckily, with Cathe, I don't have to choose!

I am pretty shy around people at the gym, I have really big breasts, so there are comments made about them, and its annoying really. I am okay once I get to know people at the gym, but the initial thing has always been hard for me. Plus I am pretty muscular, so you get the stupid comments from the "girls"which is hurtful.
Boy, I sure went to a crummy gym huh?:-(

So, working out at home is better, but sometimes I miss the social part of it, and it seems like I would work out harder around others that work out hard!:) So, whatta gonna do?;)

I voted: It's easier. I don't have to waste time and energy going to the gym. but I would also say: I like the privacy. I don't want people to be able to see me.

I also need the guidance of a video, I would probably feel lost in a gym.

I voted it is easier but the top 5 are all reasons why I choose to work out at home. For awhile I did both but it was really a waste of money because, when given a choice I always worked at home. A gym is desirable when you are disturbing your family while working out though. Some day I may go to a gym to get a personal trainer to bump up to another level. I kinda feel like Kathy and people on the board are my personal trainer though.

I do both and love it. I love the convenience and variety I get from working out at home. At the gym, I love lifting as heavy as possible, using the cardio machines and taking classes. Also, they have a gym class for kids there at certain times, so my daughter gets time to exercise while I get my workout done. It's great! :)

Initially, I started working out at home because it was more convenient. I had 3 small children at home most of the time. So I'd do it during "nap times". No babysitters, no packing gym clothes, no travel time...

As of this year, all 3 of my boys are in full time school. Which would make it easy to get to a gym.

But I won't.

One main reason is the germ factor. it totally grosses me out that people sweat on equipment, and body fluids (infected with what?) everywhere.

I know, I'm probably weird! But I am an RN, and I think about those things!
