Tell me about your best & worst job

Help me lighten up my career funk. Here are mine:

My best job was driving the beverage cart on a country club golf course (Fords Colony in Williamsburg, to be exact). It was so much fun--everyone was always unbelievably happy & excited to see the beer girl! :p Also most of my customers were tourists who stuffed their pockets full of cash, their only goal to spend it all before they went home. I'd work 3-4 days a week & make enough to pay the rent, plus I learned how to play golf for free on one of the east coast's most beautiful courses.

My worst job is the one I have now. But during college I did work one summer at a gym where the owner was absolutely insane. He'd competed in the '70s & I'm pretty sure his brain was completely fried from 'roids. He'd fly into a rage over the stupidest things (I remember once he didn't like the taste of a pot of coffee I'd made & I literally thought he was gonna hit me), he was incredibly mean & at times really frightening.

Your turn............;)

My worst job was riding about 10 miles on my bike each direction when I was thirteen, to pull weeds for eight hours a day, for 3.25 an hour. A close second is when I had a boss who used to poke me if I did something wrong! Before the law was really on our side!!!

My best job is the one I have now. I run a family dayhome, only take teacher's kids, get all the holidays off with pay (except summer) and am my own boss. Plus if I don't mesh with a child I can always decline to take them!

When I was in high school I did telemarketing for a meat/food sales company. Setting appointments for the meat salesman to come by. I lasted maybe I week, before I just quit going.

Favorite was prob my job before this - auto collections. The job would just irritate the heck out of me some days, but I really liked the people. Plus the stories our customers would give sometimes were a hoot.

Wow...this is a really hard question because I have really liked all of my jobs even if it was just the people or things that I learned about myself along the way but here goes.

Best Job (part time) - My sister and I office sat for the law firm that my aunt worked at in downtown Chicago. Her firm had just moved and we were there to accept any packages that came by mistake and answer phone calls. This was in the mid 70's. We were paid $3.00/hr. which was more than the minimum wage back then. We basically read, listened to the radio and played cards.

Best Job (full time) - My last job as Sr. Administrator for IT consulting company. I learned tons and had so much fun with all the people I met. Some very interesting characters. I just didn't trust my boss. She was not a honest person.

Worst Job - Working as a temp at an appt complex. I got tired of answering phone calls from eldery people about the cockroaches crawling up and down the walls. Also, the office manager kept hitting on me. I finally called the temp agency and got my butt out of there.

Worst: Hostess at a bar/restaurant. The employees were hyper-sexed, and it just had this really sleazy atmosphere, which got way worse in the evenings. I quit after 2 weeks.

Best: My current job as a homeschooling mom is 24/7 and tough (and I miss getting a paycheck!), but I accomplish a lot. I'll be done with my second daughter in 9 years, and though I really enjoy my kids, I'm sure I'll appreciate a change by then. So...my current job is my best so far. Hoping the next one will be just as fulfilling.

worst for me: Taco bell at 17. They treated me like dirt and made my hours horrible.

best: as far as fun I was a dog walker/petsitter for about 6 months and I had a blast. I loved all my dogs (and occasionally cats I'd visit) and they were always so excited to see me. It was fun being paid to play and go for walks. ;) The pay wasn't bad either for pretty much part time. I've had full time jobs that were much better as far as advancement and money but I enjoyed the petsitting better ha! I was working as a medical secretary then as an administrative assistant and they were going to help me get some more education (career wise) and help me advance but I decided to move away, get married and stay home with my son instead. It was the right decision for me.

Oh yes! your right homeschooling is a big job. and yes its the best! I should have wrote that also. I'm homeschooling my two and will the next also.
I probably won't know what to do with myself when my kids are all grown!

My best part-time job was during college when I was working at the information booth at a local mall on the weekends. They paid me to socialize and I met my best friend there - we were always laughing...not to mention going for drinks after we got out of work! :)

My worst job was my first job ever. It was at a place where they did hamster breeding...my job was with a group of people cleaning hundreds of cages each week....it was called "the mission". YUCK!!!

Now I like my job in the real world...but I'd still love to win the lottery - or become a novelist!! :)

Worst Job: When I was 17/18 and living in San Francisco I was an operator for a Gay Phone Sex company. I just answered the phone and patched them through after I found out what they wanted and got their credit card information. . . . I only lasted a month. I can’t remember what the ad said when I applied for the job but it clearly didn’t say Gay Phone Sex Operator. When I went to the interview and they explained the job to me I couldn’t believe that they were for real – so I took the job and found out they were.

Best Job: (Aside from being a mom) I do some freelance writing and every time I get published I think this is my favorite/best job! My day job isn’t to bad either, I’m a paralegal for four of the coolest most drastically different attorneys I’ve ever met and I love my job – but I wouldn’t call it my BEST job.

Best job: My current one, employees get along, I get a sweet discount at one of the top 25 restaurants in the state of New Jersey on-site, I enjoy the majority of our guests, have made some pretty good acquaintances over the years, and the pay is pretty nice as well. No, it isn't perfect, but it isn't bad

Worst job: Desk Clerk in Wildwood Crest, NJ...our owner rented out to unsupervised teenagers and it was a nightmare, the cops were there daily it seemed, and the regular guests were some of the most ignorant people I've ever come across. To top it off, the owner used to brag about how she bought her 17 year old son his own beer making kit for his birthday, despite the fact that he was/is?? on Ritalin for ADD!! I still scratch my head at how I lasted 2 seasons there...oh wait, I know...I used to drink, and heavily, around that time.

My favorite was simultaneous interpreter. I was free-lance and the work was sporadic but it was the most challenging and satisfying thing I've ever done.

My worst had to have been putting flyers door to door. I only lasted one day. I don't thing I even when back to get paid. Other bad ones were dishwasher, waitress ('cause I was the world's worst waitress) selling flowers on the street corner, airline reservation agent (and I did that for 10 years!).... I could go on forever.

But out of everyone else's so far I think gay phone sex operator wins.

I am a student so I have not really had a job I have been in love with yet but:

Best Job: My current job. It is a mindless easy job but has it's perks. They are flexible with my schedule while I go to school. I like most of the people I work with. I do not have any trouble getting time off for vacation/school stuff when I need it. The pay is nothing I would want to make for the rest of my life but not bad for p/t retail work. I also get health benefits.

Worst Job: Ummm working as a candy packer. I would be assigned a certain place in the line. Then I had to put say a box a Hershey Bars and a Box of Reese's in each box as it went down the line. If I got a real exciting day I would get put together cardboard boxes. The bosses were always on everyone's butt to work faster but it was so boring I was half falling asleep. I think I lasted ummm two weeks.

You all do not want to know what my worst job was..it involved high heels and a pole...yeah, judge away, who cares, it paid the bills and sucked. I was young, dumb and you know the rest...but no regrets, cause you can't live with regrets, only learn right?

Best job? Even though I used to love my job as a writer...I have to say selling art at a little fabulous art gallery in Park City Utah was the best...I met my DH there! :)

Best job is a tossup between my current job as an ICU nurse and my old job as a CCU nurse! My worst job was in a bakery in college - I didn't have one date the whole year because I had to be up at 4 on weekends to work at the hellacious place...can't eat doughnuts or crumbcake to this day!

Worst job: working at Denny's. They treated people like dirt and it was chaotic. I've had other waitressing jobs, but this one was ridiculous. I was done with my first college degree and taking science classes before starting clinicals for nursing school, and I was in no frame of mind to be treated like a 16 year old kid who was working my first fast food job. That's pretty much how they treated everyone ... young and old alike. Come to think of it ... when I was a 16 year old kid working at McDonald's we were treated better!!

Best job: the one I have now! I'm a claims adjuster in liability claims. We handle third party claims on about 35 policies, from homeowner's to commercial liability policies. It's fascinating because no two claims are alike. I use my medical skills because about half of them involve injuries. I'm learning about all types of property damage from the other half. I'm learning the legal system because a great many of them end up in suit. I work with really supportive people, and my manager is a terrific person. She's very down to earth and involved in what her team is doing.

Worst job: Administrative assistant, winning the title of "worst" by virtue (?) of my insane boss, who made life for everyone hellish. For example, two long-time staff members took mental health leaves 2 months after this woman came along. She was someone with nothing positive to say, ever, and was never shy about "discussing" the perceived incompetence of her staff. She also liked to drag people around by the elbow! I lasted about 6 months before the mental and physical toll forced me to find an alternative!

Best job: My current job, cardiac nurse. Maybe I love it so much because I waited so long to pursue it...but it has turned out to be such a gift. I alternate working 3 days one week, 2 days the next (12 hour shifts), so I get a great balance between work and family time. My unit takes both critical care and more stable patients, so every day is an adventure. Going back to school at 38 was a big deal, but it paid off, and I feel very lucky!

Worst Job: I actually have two jobs that I just hated. The first was when I was a teenager. I worked in this factory making Christmas decorations. There were two tables; one with the "paid no relation to boss workers" who had to stand and were not allowed to talk to one other – just work as fast as we can, like we were machines. The second table appeared to be the bosses’ daughter and her friends. They were allowed to sit and talk and they were doing the exact same job as the other table.

The second job that I hated was the first law firm that I worked at. The secretary left at 4:30 and if he needed her after that and she was gone – he would scream "what do you guys think, I hire you from 8:30 – 4:30. If you needed to leave early, say about 4:15, he would scream, "what do you think, I hired you from 8:30 – 4:30 and therefore you can’t leave early." I remember one time, he needed a flight for the next day to attend court in another city. He asked the secretary to book the flight. While she was on the phone confirming the details with the travel agent, he told her to hang up. She told him to hold on. He grabbed the phone, hung it up and told her "he does not care who she is speaking to even if it is God and he calls, she must hang up." It was too tense for me there and I only lasted 2 weeks. He did not talk to me that way, at least not yet and I guess that is because I was new but he talked to everyone else like that and it just was not worth it for me to stay.

Best Job: Where I am currently. I am a Law Clerk and I work for one of the best down to earth lawyers. My hours are flexible, so if I have to leave early to deal with the kids, etc. It is not a problem. If he needs me on Sunday for an hour or so because of an emergency, I don’t mind either. I deal with litigation and therefore each case is different and I love helping my clients – at least the ones that are in need.

Worst job: As an associate attorney for a woman who hated me because she was morbidly obese and I wasn't. She kept calling me "skinny", criticized me all day long and took great joy in making my life miserable. Yuck.

Best job: My job now. Our firm is not too big, not too small, and most of the attorneys are pretty easy-going. Most of the clients are nice and I love our offices. My work is mentally stimulating and often challenging, but not overwhelming. I don't make a ton of money, and don't take money for granted, but if I really want something, I can afford to buy it. :)

McDonald - one of the worst

:)

My short stint (less than 5 months) at McDonalds happened when I was 46 - not a kid by any means. I was hired for management training & was paired with a trainer who acted like a drill sergeant. It was in innercity McD's, and I guess she thought that's how she had to act to get everyone to tow the line. She screamed at me all the time, did not treat me with respect, and I quit although I could see that there could be a future working there. I, on the other hand, got along great with the kids because I treated them right - no yelling on my part at all.

No judgment here, I considered that same worst job in my younger years. Bills gotta get paid.
