Squats

Cathlete
Cathe or educate crowd?

I use to squat very heavy, 135-225lbs. and I don't think I've ever paid any attention to my thighs as much as I do now to notice the
"CRUMPS". It's not that bad, but I will not wear shorts until I can smooth them out. My quads are considerably thick, but b/c of the dimples my muscles are (to me) not so defined AAARRRRGGGGHHHHx( x( x( x(.

My question to anyone out there: would I have to continue squatting HEAVY (beyond 100 lbs) or could Cathe's workout suffice?--Leaner legs, L&G, Cardio Kicks? My dh is constantly telling in order to see the crumps gone I have to go back to squatting HEAVY. Is this true?

Please respond as I would HATE going back.

Thanks everyone
Haydee:)

Hi Haydee:) ,
I know that everybody body reacts differently, but it seems like I read A LOT of peoples success stories they find going heavier to be effective. I know in my case that is what has worked for me. I just recently read a sucess story over at vf http://69.93.245.62/forum/showthread.php?t=58632

Also when I was looking for answers to this same question I did a search on this board and vf and found very HELPFUL information!!

Hope this helps:)

Good luck!!
~Nicole

P:S: My results did not show over night either :-( It took a few month of consistently working out:D

By crumps do you mean cellulite? I assume that's what you mean but I've just never heard it called that before. I would focus more on a clean diet rather than lifting heavy since it's fat that you want to eliminate, maybe even add some more cardio - running has done great things for slimming down my legs - L&G has also been a big help.

Nicole I will give it another try going heavy, but for me only. The reason why I don't like it anymore is b/c my dh thinks Cathe's workouts are ineffective and every time his friends are around he always want to flex my bi's/tri's or squat for them. It's annoying & aggrevating.

Curly Q (like the name), yes "crumps" refer to cellulite. I have a major problem with clean eating. I'm not going to lie, but I honestly don't think I can make it through the day w/o bread. However, I do eat so much better than I did last year. Now I can have one sandwich for the day and that's fine with me, b/c years ago, I would eat bread all day long.

My dh is always yapping about low carb, low carb, low carb & the more he yaps, the more I want carbs. I know I have to do this for me, but his way of dieting is just plain chicken, boiled eggs & green veggies, breakfast, lunch & dinner. I simply can't eat this way every single day. And he acts as though if I add one little thing with my protein shake like yogurt, AAARRRRGGGGH, my diet is destroyed for the day. I guess next it will be leaves from the trees that he wants me to eat.

I'm going crazy.

Re: carbs

Don't get me wrong, I'm nothing like I was years ago a junk food fanatic, but just how bad can eating a carb be? I don't see anything wrong with eating what you like in moderation. I do eat veggies, but maybe to him it's not enough.

Ok I'm leaving this topic along for now.....b/c I will go on & on forever.

Hi Haydee! You can eat your carbs its just a matter of eating the right ones. Brown rice/yams/baked white potatoes/quinoa/wild rice/high protein high fiber cereals/Ezekiel bread/oatmeal/fruits/veggies these are all good carbs & should be consumed.

As far as your leg workouts are concerned, I have ALL of Cathe's leg workouts & she's the only instructor I've found that really knows how to work women's legs to the fullest. I change my routine up every week. You can do a heavy leg workout one week & the next do Legs & Glutes. Cathe has so many different ones (Pyramid Lower Body, Leaner Legs, Slow & Heavy & Pure Strength Strong Legs & Abs) just to name a few. Cathe's wonderful so give her a shot you have nothing to lose except your crumps:7 HTH, Kathy:D

Hi Nicole,

Gosh I am so sick about hearing the low-carb garbage. There is nothing wrong with a carbohydrate. I've lived in Asia for over 7 years, and Asians (and foreigners living there) eat rice and noodles all day long and are LEAN.
Carbs in fruit, whole grains, vegetables and legumes can do nothing but good for you. It's the twinkies that are the problem.

And no offense, really, but I think you ought to tell you husband to shut up. :)
Or at least get off your case. I know if my husband micro-managed my diet like that, he'd regret it. .. .

take care,
laura

I thank you all for your response. BTW, this morning I did two sets of 10 at 115lbs. ALONE and I had a whole wheat bagel for breakfast:)

I really enjoy being on his forum you guys are so helpful.

Thank you all.

Hi Haydee:

Eating and the effects of what people eat vary from person to person. Going into ketosis to keep you weight down is unhealthy and unnecessary.. Low carb dieting, ie. Atkins are based on this premise. However, you can eat good carbs and that can include rice, pasta, bread, etc. If you follow a low glycemic diet, like the Southbeach diet, I'm not talking about the induction phase I, I 'm referring to phase II & III. This is a healthy way to eat, which allows you to lose 1-2 lbs per week and eat a variety of foods. There is also a book called: The New Glucose Revolution, that explains all about "good carb" eating.. It is based on moderate carb intake. For example, if you wanted rice, pick brown or par-boiled converted rice, the GI or glycemic index for these is 55 which is low.. that is for 1/2 cup serving... if you wanted a baked potato, which is 70, considered high, you would balance this with lower choices or no other carbs that meal, and make sure the fat in that meal is low; note that protein is eaten with every meal to stabilize the blood sugar. I have a Type I diabetic son and we follow the low glycemic way of eating. I have also stopped eating starchy carbs after 12:00... For breakfast I may have 5 egg whites, a piece of turkey bacon and 1 piece of raisin toast (15 carbs - 1; 14 total carbs)lunch: 1/2 cup par-boiled rice; 1 to 1.5 cups of roasted veggies or any vegetable and 3 ozs of chicken.. I also have 2 snacks, in between breakfast and after lunch, which consist of: 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and 1/2 cup of fruit, pineapple, etc.; canned in its own juice, and I rinse that off... Dinner: 1 - 1.5 cups veggies and 3 ounces of protein and for dessert, if I'm still hungry 4 ozs low carb yoghurt with 1/2 scoop of protein powder... my calories are about 1,500 a day. These are just suggestions. Please investigate the low glycemic way of eating, it is a healthier and more enjoyable choice and you will still get the results you are looking for. Good luck ... let me know what you think! Dee

I don't know what to tell you about squats, but I'm in awe of anyone that can squat 225 pounds!!!! Even 115 is amazing! You are one strong woman.

I do know what you mean about bread though. I think we all know what good carbs and bad carbs are, and which ones we should eat. (I'm sick to death of the low carb thing, because a plate of fruits and veggies is nothing but carbs.) The problem with bread for me is 1. if I eat one piece I always want another, 2. if I eat bread alone, without a protien I am starving in an hour or so, and want more bread, thus the eating bread all day thing. It's because even the healthiest bread is fairly quickly processed by the body and causes an insulin spike followed by a drop. It took me a lifetime to figure out that I cannot eat just a bread (or grain product) for breakfast. When I do I'm completey bonked in 2 hours. I'm shaky and light headed and feeling like I need more bread, and need it NOW :). If I eat a protien with the bread (or cereal etc) I'm fine. Bread does the same thing to my body as sugar, and I find them both extremely hard to resist. Then they start a viscious cycle. It's addiction.

First off you should do what you want to do, not what your husband wants! Also maybe you should look for a new one. No offense but he sounds a tad bit overbearing to me. Unless your going to be a body builder and do contests why do you have to eat like he suggests and lift that heavy? Thats crazy! I feel like a total wimp with the 40lbs I use to squat! But hey it works for me, and you need to do whats works for you and makes you happy. Good luck! Lori BC

I've never heard the term before either. British?

Dear Haydee,

Low carb is a very unhealthy diet, and your brain needs carbohydrates to function. It must be very though have a dh who criticizes you the way he does, and I was married to one of those for seventeen years. I am much happier now that I divorced him, and I have an absolutely wonderful boyfriend who is very supportive of me.

Everybody else who posted on the thread is correct, and there are good carbs and bad carbs. I am a binge eater, and I know when I am eating the bad carbs, which is much too often. I also want to congratuate you on being so strong. I am such a wimp, and I have just begun squatting with a barbell on my shoulder, and the weight of my barbell is light.

I am on the short side, being only 5'2" tall. What do the other smaller, shorter women here squat?

Oh, crap! Not another one of these "old as the hills" threads!
Somebody with a lot of time of their hands must have gone searching in the old posts. (And I got caught in it!!).

Jazzi21: please pay attention to how old threads are before you answer them. The question was asked and answered a LONG time ago. :)
