something to think about...as well as to share

a variation of this quote (credited to pastor martin niemoller, a prior nazi supporter) is on the wall at the dc holocaust memorial:

"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

i think if you change out socialist, trde unionist, etc. for any other minority, it still makes a great deal of sense and is pretty powerful. as we look back to the holocaust only a mere 60 years ago, we need to say "never again" to any kind of discrimination. yes, the holocaust was 60 years ago, but that kind of ethnic/racial cleansing is still happening.

PLEASE...i don't mean to start up everything again and get this thread removed as well. i just thought i'd share a quote that always reminds me to stick up for others.

let's all realize that we are a beautiful and diverse community and need to support each other.

how about this, why don't we share our favorite quote or saying that we try to live by? i have a ton, but the one above is what made me write "those" posts on the "ugly" thread.

Thank you Lorie. My favorite saying is very simple and how I try and live my life. I often fail, but I try.:)

"Do unto others, as you would have done unto you".

I too am sorry about the ugliness, and am sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings, it was something I felt strongly about and responded in a strong way and make no apologies for voicing those feelings.

Those are wonderful quotes. I'd like to add:

My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.
~ Dalai Lama

My hope is that those on this forum (and ultimately those in life) who differ in opinion manage to come back together and coexist with patience, compassion and wisdom. We learn best from each other. <3

This is from a poster I bought at the Holocaust Museum in DC:

"The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality." Dante

How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.

From the equality of rights springs identity of our highest interests; you cannot subvert your neighbor's rights without striking a dangerous blow at your own.

I have 2:

You have the ability to light up your life like you can't believe. Your abilities will flourish when they are not controlled by someone else's idea of who you should be.

and

Withdraw your investment of energy from the perpetrators in your life and they will wither and disappear from your radar screen.

These are all good.

Mine is one I made up on my own...

"We're just a shell without our spirit" In a nutshell, what's on the outside doesn't matter, it's who we are inside that defines us.

Here's my favorite example of this...A couple of years back, a nurse at our local hospital decided to have gastric bypass surgery because she was sure people couldn't stand her because of her weight. She went, had the surgery, and can't figure out why she is still unpopular..it's because she has a nasty attitiude about everyone and everything, literally blows cigarette smoke in people's faces when she walks by then, pretty much has a "my way or the highway" mentality.

Point is, change the inside, the outside will follow, and who really cares if it doesn't?

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great"

"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principle difference between a dog and a man."

and one my father engrained in me:

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt"

all... quotes from Mark Twain!:)

Great thread - thanks for starting it!

Here's a few of my faves:

"We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams."

"There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there, you'll be free if you truly want to be."

"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men."

"Inside this room all of my dreams become realities and some of my realities become dreams."

All from the 1971 Willy Wonka - I adore that movie!!

Oh, and I also like (not from Wonka) - "What the french, toast!! - why you son of a biscuit eating bulldog..."

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.... (my Mom, not sure where the quote originated!)

Great thread!

I don't have a favorite quote per se, but I try to teach my kids to live by these rules:

Don't put others down to make yourself feel better

Be happy with what you have; don't look at others and want what they have.

I try to follow these too.
