So I got my pug microchipped today

They are not harmful and they do not pose a security thing either, the only information on those chips is your name and address so the dog or cat can come back to you safely.
There was this family that lost their pet and was gone for like a year, Well the people who had their pet decided to one day get the dog Neutered and took it to the vet, and decided to run that thing on it and it came up with a microchip with the dogs real owners and saw that the dog was missing so they called the dogs real owner and they finally got their dog returned to them,
So microchips are very important and is not a privacy issue at all, that is all that the microchip does. Your social security info and other important data is NOT stored in that chip at all.

Why thank you Miss Shelley:* :*

I don't see anything wrong with having your pets microchipped. However, the day they try to microchip me, is the day I move to another country. ;)

Unless I'm not understanding the technology though, they don't actually "track" your pet, they can just use a scanner to read the chip if he/she happens to show up at a shelter. Unless they start scanning every dog that comes into the vet office, not sure how they would ever find your stolen dog unless there was some kind of GPS tracking in the chip. And there is where the paranoia kicks in. Then the government would know what breeds are owned, who has them, and where they are currently. If your county decided to "outlaw" a certain breed, it would be very easy for them to quickly round up the offending canines and take them away. If I owned a Rottie or Pit Bull, I'd be nervous about that - don't think animal control is too concerned with my doxies. Unless I'm totally confused about the technology though, that isn't the way it is currently.

who gives a rat's patootie whether the govmt's tracking you or not?"
Ever read Animal Farm by George Orwell? The gov't (and corporations) count on people with your attitude so that they can keep the "sheeple" submissive and gain power and control that they typically use in ways that hurt humanity and the environment, all so that they can increase their power and control, as well as their bank accounts.

Yes, I've read it. It was about COMMUNISM for pete's sake. It had absolutely nothing to do with technology & the miracles it can do for humans and animals. It also had nothing to do w/corporations or profit. My "attitude" as you call it is simply that I'm doing nothing wrong & the govmt is wasting time & money if they're actually tracking me thru my EZ Pass (which I personally don't believe is true--I think that's paranoia at its worst). FYI, I work for the govmt, & we really DON'T give a rat's patootie about your trips to the grocery store or the beach or wherever.

"It's called progress."
Sure ... if you simply look at it on the surface ... if you examine and think about technology on a deeper level, you can see that any of the convenience "benefits" are hugely eclipsed by the grave disadvantages it has to humanity and the environment.

So what exactly are you suggesting? That we just go back to the days when technology didn't exist? That we shouldn't take advantage of medical advances from technology & rely on nature to heal our illnesses? That we communicate w/2 cups & a string?

In fact, if technology is so evil & dangerous, what in the world are you doing in front of a computer? After all, it's probably emitting deathly radio active rays as we speak...........:+ :p :7 }(

Methinks I'm sensing a little hypocrisy.......;-)

I thought there was GPS tracking capability? I could be wrong, but that was my expectation........if my dog ever gets stolen I need to be able to find him, that was the whole point of the chip--I'll go check the site & see what I can find.

"...don't think animal control is too concerned with my doxies."

And that's exactly what the doxies are hoping for! There they are, looking all cute and weiner-ish, innocent even! Meanwhile, they're the ones who are plotting to take over the world! You can see it in their little faces!!! Years of being called "little" and "cute" has finally made them crack and now they're out for REVENGE!!!}(

Okay, maybe I'm getting carried away.

Actually you are correct Shelley. My doxies are part of a secret faction bent on taking over the world! How did you figure it out? In fact, this is actually Cheyenne typing, Liann is tied up in the corner for trying to interfer in our quest for world domination!!! }(

I had to laugh at your doxie thing LOL have you ever watched the movie called "The Uglies Dachsund"? it is so cute, I think you will get a kick out of that movie if you love Doxies.

Laura, the microchip does not have GPS tracking capability. Like I said earlier, the chip is not powered, so it cannot EMIT anything, or track a GPS satellite. Unless you have some newfangled microchip that I'm not aware of...

So, to B&G, who is paranoid about energy fields and radiation - the chip does NOT EMIT RADIATION OF ANY KIND! In order for something to emit radiation (whether it's microwaves or radio waves or light waves) it needs to be powered by some kind of energy source. The microchip is NOT POWERED. The chip itself is encapsulated in a biocompatible material, and it's no different than having, say, a pacemaker or an artificial hip. These things are not natural, but they are also not harmful to the body.

Of course, I bet you all didn't know that Cathe's DVDs all have GPS tracking devices in them, and every time you do a Cathe workout, it sends a signal back to SNM, telling them which workout you did and when and where. It's all part of Cathe's plan for global domination. True story. }( :+

OK I am about to let out a string of profanities that would embarass a truck driver..........there is no point to that d*mn chip if I can't find my dog if someone kidnaps him! x(

Actually I did know Cathe's DVDs were monitoring us. I was clued in the first time I did IMAX 2, when she says "double knot your laces & get ready to go........" How else would she know I double knotted my laces? :7

Laura, the point of the chip is NOT so that you can find your dog if he's kidnapped. It's so animal shelters and veterinarians can identify the owner of a LOST pet. I'm sorry you were misled! :(

:( :( :( :( :(

Thanks Emily, my own fault I guess. I should've done more research. Max has NEVER EVER run away (knock wood). My main concern was him being stolen. Which I DID say to the vet, she didn't mention the fact that I wouldn't be able to find him if something that awful happened.

Oh well, now it's there so I'll make the best of it.

<<I don't see anything wrong with having your pets microchipped. However, the day they try to microchip me, is the day I move to another country.>>

Amen Liann!

<< Here come the trench coat doxies!! Watch out everyone!! :D :D :D>>

LMAO Catherine!!

Laura, there may be a GPS device for pets in the not-so-distant future, but it will have to be worn on the pet's collar (because it will need to be powered, which requires a battery, which will have to be replaced regularly). So, even with a device like that, a dognapper could just remove the collar and throw it away.

It's so sad that we should even have to worry about our pets being stolen!!!

Here's an article on Doggie GPS:

That's pretty cool, but you're right--it wouldn't work if a dog was stolen b/c the dognapper would just remove the collar.

<sigh> I guess I'll just have to limit Max's field trips to really short errand running in good neighborhoods. I'm just too much of a worrier.
