LAST EDITED ON Oct-10-02 AT 08:17AM (Est)[p]Hi Everyone,

I have noticed while stepping to Cathe, I can become very out of breath, and when I do, I just drop my intensity, and turn the moves into normal low impact step moves, and then build back up to a higher intensity. Should I feel guilty for doing this (I do) ? I feel like I am not giving the workout my all, if you know what I mean ? Is it dangerous for the body to keep going while in an out of breath state ? If so, is it wise while beginning with Cathe, to build up gradually ? I just feel I suppose like a bit of a failure.
I wish I had discovered Cathe earlier !

Anna

PS: I have only been doing Cathe for 2 weeks now.

Hi Anna! Don't sweat it! You'll build up your endurance and intensity level in time! I'd recommend doing it gradually! I don't know what tape your doing but consider breaking it in half for 2 days-( if possible) for one week and then do it twice a week split in 2 days the next week(then you should be ready for the whole tape)-or try to plan videos around that tape that will be of medium intensity (thorough complete workout or flexibility-resistance training)) that will not take up all your energy for this specific tape! Whenever your doing a tape that sucks the life out of you-stop doing what they are doing walk around, always moving--catch your breath--and when you feel ready to restart go at your own pace and use all modifications--your goal will be to finish the tape entirely-get use to the speed and choreography and so forth--then slowly drop modifications and then before you know it you have mastered that tape! Keep in mind that there may be a time that the tape kicks you in your butt again--it all depends on what you have that day--it's not that you're gone backwards---Stick with it and work through it! The verdict is NOT GUILTY! Take care!Your friend in fitness~~Francine

Thanks Francine,

Your answer has been a great help. I am at the moment trying to master the Wedding video, which I think is more intense than my other Cathe step video, Mega Step blast. Maybe I should start with that one, and do the strength part of the wedding video. I never thought of trying to break the workout in half, I will give that a go, too.

Many Thanks :)

I think you should always listen to your body. After all it as only been 2 weeks.Be proud that you are doing as good as you are.First when I started with Cathe I did Body Max.Needless to say I didn;t do all of the video in one day.I can remember wanting a challenge and saying to myself,I am going to do ALL of that tape today. That was after I had been doing it for a couple of monthes.I think I made it.I lived to tell about it anyway.
I can also remember IMAX knocking my socks off.I can't wait for IMAX 2.I think the new videos are going to leave us with alot to chat about.I can't wait.I am SSSOOOO excited.I got a feeling that we all may doing a little bit of modifing!!!!!

I'v bee doing Cathe step tapes since 1995, and my humble advice is that you should LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. Only do what you can. Yes you need to push yourself, but not to the point of danger.

I suffered from Plantar fascitis, and if I had stopped when the pain started, there may have been less damage in the long run.

The best thing you can do is to listen to your body and change your pace accordingly! Sounds like you are doing great! I bet in no time you'll be flying through her tapes at full speed!

Let me introduce myself......

Modify? I am "Queen of Cathe modifications!" When I started doing Cathe cardio at over 300lbs, there was no such thing as getting through the warm up without modifying something! I remember modifying the warm up on MIS for months! :) And do you think you can REALLY do air born jumps at 300lbs? PU-LEEZE! :)
I just took it 1 step at a time, doing as much as I could each workout, and slowly but consistently, my endurance improved week by week. Adding in Imax once/week was the best thing I could do because it really helped build my endurance for cardio. But to quote my dad, "never mind slow progress, slow and steady wins the race!" And with Cathe, that is true, just keep modifying however you need to, and week by week, you'll be modifying less and less. :)

Thankyou so much, everyone, for all your kind advice. I will no longer feel guilty for modifying in future when battling my way over the step to Cathe ! I think I have been trying too hard, the last thing I want to do is pass out in the middle of a Cathe workout, and miss out on the rest of it ! Heaven forbid ! :7
And I am still getting a good workout, doing it more low impact, right ? And it is better than huffing and puffing like a steam train about to go over a cliff ! So, modify is the key.

many thanks !:)

(a less guilty) Anna

Anna:

only two weeks!!!!

Listen girl, realize that you are brave for even beginning your fitness journey with Cathe-boot-camp-for-breakfast rather than Rosemary Clooney (is that her name?!?!).

Two weeks is no time. Remember your fitness journey is for life. There's no-one to set arbitrary deadlines or moveable goalposts for you, you will get where you are going at a pace that works for you Anna-Bernard-an-indivual.

Don't be in a rush. It's like watching young men in fast cars speeding to a red light. Why? What's the point?

Take your time and build a solid foundation of strength and endurance. You aren't in competition with anybody and you will get there, you know that, and I think so does everyone else on these forums who is impressed with your passion and dedication, visible in all your postings, questions and comments.

Modify, modify, modify, like Cathe says. When you preview Imax for the first time (we just know you WILL be getting Imax at some point in the near future!!!) you will hear Cathe PRAISING Hope for modifying, because she is being respobsible and doing what works for her.

Lots of us here at the forums love Hope for just that reason. We really identify with her!

Remember: guilt has no place in building a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Take care,

Clare

Hi Anna! I think instead of feeling guilty you should feel so PROUD that you are taking on Cathe. She is considered one of the toughest exercise video instructors out there, and modifying is a very smart thing to do. You definitely don't want to burn out or hurt yourself, then you couldn't work out at all. Just adding a little more on each time will get you to your goal, just don't let the mental part of modifying get to you, because you are still getting an awesome workout. Remember, most people don't even walk for exercise, we are so way ahead of the game here! :)

You're doing great, make this a challenge for yourself and reward yourself for each accomplishment made. I know it's an often used phrase, but I love, "It's not just the destination, it's the journey that matters". I've made it my mantra, because it's so true.

Hi Clare and Kristine,

Thankyou for your kind words. Since doing Cathe, I have realised that the workouts I was doing before were like ballet classes ! There is no-one quite like Cathe. She is like a small package of lovely fitness diva-ness ! :7 :7 :7 :7
Clare, I think you mean Rosemary Conley !!!!!!!! LOL !!!!!!!!Rosemary Conley is like a pussycat compared to Cathe ! I only own one Rosemary Conley video, and I think I broke one drop of sweat when I did it (I have only done the video once !) !
