Resolve Walking Lunges ?s

Cathe or someone who knows, please resolve the walking lunges question about how to count them. Does 1 lunge consist of a step forward on one leg only or is it one leg AND the other? I've been watching the previous thread, but noone that has answered seems to know for sure. I want to start doing them, and want to know just how much torture 400 would be. Also, what about doing them with weights. What would be the pros and cons? Thanks so much!

Hi M! When I do walking lunges, I count each step forward as one lunge. So right, left, right, left would be 1, 2, 3, 4 lunges.

I don't encourage weights until you have mastered form and technique without weight. Then if you want to add weight, do it in small increments (ie: 1 pound wrist weights on, then upgrade to 3 pound dumbells in each hand. Then keep the wrist weights on with the 3 pound dumbbells etc.) The reason for going so light with weight is because you are doing so many lunges (200 plus). If you were only going to do 3 sets of 12 then you may want to hold heavier dumbbells in each hand (ie: 10, 12 or 15 pounds each.

If you want to keep the exercise more endurance oriented then stay with no weight or light weight. If you want to increase your lean muscle mass, then use a more weight.

Thanks Cathe! I am so excited that YOU answered! I just said to a co-worker "I can't believe CATHE replied!". I've been doing your workouts almost exclusively for nearly 10 years (I own every one), and you are SUCH an inspiration! I never would have reached an advanced level of training without you. I think we "Cathe-ites" are truly in a class of our own. Thanks for your passion for fitness and for your devotion to us! Okay, I'll stop now.. One more thing, tell me more about the road trip you mentioned in another post. I've been wanting to come meet you and take one of your classes. Maybe if you come somewhere nearer to me (Kansas City area), it would be easier. Thanks again! Linda

Drat! I guess I thought that one walking lunge was considered one lunge on each leg. That means I did 400 total after PLB yesterday. Oh, well. Good news is that my legs feel good today. Well, they were a bit tired doing IMax 2 this morning.

Hi Lorrayne! How are you?

With typical lunges I usually count the right and left side as one. But since we just keep sequentially walking forward with these, and doing such high numbers, I like to clear a path and travel while counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,..............................397, 398, 399, 400:7 :7 :7

RE: Resolve Walking Lunges ?

Hi Cathe!

I am well. Thank you for asking. I recently purchased a home out here in San Diego and will be moving in on the 20th! I am really looking forward to my new work out area in my bedroom as I bought upgraded padding that makes one feel as though they are walking on air. It really feels great on the toes! :)

With that said, I'm glad this month's rotation is a concentration on the lower body as I'll be climbing a ton of stairs in my townhome this month as I move boxes from my existing home to my new one. Will also get a nice upper body workout moving all of those heavy boxes filled with books. ;-)

Thank you so much for clarifying the lunges. So, I did do what you typically consider 200 lunges. However, I sure look silly turning around after doing two complete lunges per leg! Good thing is that my legs get a bit of a break while I'm turning around. LOL!

RE: Resolve Walking Lunges ?

Do you do 400 all at once? Yesterday I did 200 in sets of 50 and ran for about a 1 minute in between sets. This was after my 4 mile run. It was pretty hard to do 50 and the transition to a jog between sets was really weird feeling as well. Is it better to do them all in one set?

RE: Resolve Walking Lunges ?

Yes, I did all of them at once immediately following the standing leg portion of PLB. I did the floor work of PLB after stretching those tired muscles.

IMax 2 was a bit tough the day after, though, as my legs were tired (not sore). They were still tired this morning while doing HSTA. I couldn't finish all of those pulsing squats!

RE: Resolve Walking Lunges ?

That's the way I did mine too yesterday amy b. I did sets of 50 with jogging between sets. I just broke up part of my route with lunges. I did Push Pull before my jog and my legs were jello! after those sets of 50. It felt funny, like I really didn't have much brain to leg contact lol.

Hello all!

Where does everyone do their walking lunges? Outside on the sidewalk? I think I'd be self-conscious doing them outside for everyone to see me! :7 Too bad my DS is too heavy for the Baby Bjorn. It would have been fun to do these while wearing him.

Hi Melanie! I do mine inside. I can do 10 from my front door into the greatroom and turn and do 7 more into my dining room, soooo...a total of 17 one direction. I do them without any weight and they are tough. Can't even imagine carrying a baby too!

You guys ROCK! Everyone I know thinks I'm a workout freak and you guys are talking about doing multiple workouts per day. You are awesome! :) Today I did Imax2 plus 25 min of an upper body workout. Maybe I'll rock someday. :D
