QUIRKY LITTLE THINGS ABOUT CLX

If anyone is struggling with holding the heavy weights in CLX (like me), someone posted a solution on VG.
They will come in handy for STS too.
Wrist wraps with hooks. They are suppose to take the pressure off the grip.

oops, I just noticed it was Sunnyside who posted the suggestion on VF!.
Thanks again Daisy! Great idea!!!

Oh man, thanks! I have been having trouble with my hands and wrists hurting from holding 25 lb dumbells for so long - especially in CLX when you do like a deadlift, come all the way up, go back down to 45 degrees, row, and stand up, all slow, and that whole thing just makes one rep out of 12!!!

That one gets me too!
The reverse grip row kills my hands. I could handle more weight on that row if my hands would allow it.
I've purchased from the Bodybuilding.com store before. They ship super fast so they should be here in a few days- thank goodness!!!

Cynthia: I didn't start CLX because I was in the middle of FF's January rotation- I'm on my last week of that right now. And yes, I did preorder STS-- do you think it would be beneficial to start CLX and not finish it? That's why I'm hesitating. I don't have to start STS the minute I receive it, but soon thereafter I think. I'll be too excited to wait for more than a week or two.

If I were you, I would do STS first (I think:eek:). For me there was a benefit to doing CLX first. For starters, I've learned how to pick up a heavy weight. I also needed to take off my holiday weight. I feel CLX has better prepared for STS .

STS looks like it was designed to build muscle, CLX is a fat burning program.
I can see the benefit of following STS with CLX and that is what I plan to do. I will be repeating CLX in the summer months. I hope that makes sense!

Thanks Cynthia- makes perfect sense. I am OK as far as holiday weight goes right now (amazingly, since you and I share some similar food issues, if I remember correctly). :)

I'll wait then on CLX- that was where I was leaning anyway. But I'm excited to do it and have really enjoyed reading about your experience with it. I think I'll take the next few weeks and do some new DVDs I bought for my birthday present to myself. Plus, I need to finish my 1RMs SOMEDAY soon!

Awe com 'on Patty. I need someone else hanging with me while I'm doing CLX over on the hardcore check-in;):p. Anyways, I'm going to try and lift heavier on those rows today with my hooks.

Fitt44- I hope you'll like the lifting hooks.:)

But Dallys, I'm a little Type A to leave a rotation right in the middle and I can't wait that long to start STS! Stop tempting me!

Patty, I'm hoping Teddy starts CLX soon and then you'll really feel left out:p.
Course, when you are all doing STS, I'll feel left out. So many workouts, so little time.

I have this exact problem - those 25's just hurt my wrists and are hard to hold for a long time. I am going to order these as well.

Thanks for the heads up!

Cynthia, do you think if I use CLX cardio on non STS weight days that the STS system would turn into a super muscle building/fat burning system??

From what I read on the VF forum, Burn Intervals following a weighted workout day does not promote muscle growth because it uses combination strength moves and plyo type exercises.

So....if we want to keep STS a true muscle growth system, we should do simple cardio on non weight days....like kickboxing, treadmill, step....cardio with no weights. Right??!! But then again muscle burns fat....so no matter what we will drop weight right??!!! Darn it.....I'm getting confused

I agree! It is completely confusing.

First let me say, from what I read if your goal is to gain muscle mass with STS you will need to perform a simple cardio on non weight days. Burn intervals will not promote muscle growth. For muscle growth your muscles need rest.
CLX overtrains the muscles and then allows for little proper rest. While it prevents muscle loss, lifting without rest prevents growth.

This is how CLX was explained that made it a little easier for me to understand.

"CLX, as designed, is not a muscle building program. However, I don't believe that Chalene's original intention was to design a muscle building program per se. What I think she was trying to design was a
metabolism boosting program, and that her explanation for its effectiveness being the result of muscle increase is perhaps a gross oversimplification.

The program, especially phases 1 and 3, strikes me as having a lot in common with what trainers like Alwyn Cosgrove call "metabolic resistance training," a type of resistance training which may produce some increase in muscular strength and size, but is used primarily as a means to reduce fat.

Now, that doesn't mean people who follow her program will be disappointed. Far from it, I think for this reason many, if not most, will be thrilled with their results. If the program had been a true muscle building program the test group participants would have gotten progressively larger through the first two phases, before finally leaning out during the third. As most women would have been in tears long before even reaching the third phase, it was probably good the program wasn't designed that way.

The fact that CLX is more like MRT has actually piqued my interest in the program since as far as I know there really isn't anything else like that on the market. However, I can also understand how those looking for more of a strict muscle building program would be disappointed."

Getting back to quirky things in CLX, I just finished Burn Intervals, and I love when Chalene talks to Toni about having 7 kids. Chalene says things to her like, ("7 kids! Are you hearing this, people? " ; "This is a walk in the park compared to taking care of all those kids!" and "If you think you don't have time to workout because you have too many people in your family, think of Toni and make time for yourself!"

I also like the way Chalene compliments Laili saying what a nice person she is and how she's never heard Laili say a bad word about anyone. It's a very sweet and genuine comment and Laili practically blushes over the remark--it's really cute to see.

Anyway, I just like getting those personal insights into the background exercisers. I think it's nice that Chalene shares the limelight on them too.

I guess the most important thing is to just work out and move my body....maybe some days I'll do regular cardio and some days I'll do CLX cardio....who knows, with STS I might not be able to move on the off days.;)

When she talks to Toni about her kids, I think Toni made a wise decision to stop when she did (first birth: single, second birth: twins, third birth: quadruplets! If she'd kept going, she'd have 15 kids! LOL!)

Toni is in some of the turbo jams and Chalene mentions her 7 kids with 3 pregancies too. I couldn't beleive it :) - although I must say in CLX I think she looks better - I think she has just a few more lbs on her than some of those turbo jams. Not many mind you, but maybe 3-5 lbs more.

should plyos be avoided on non-weight days? I thought it was just the weight work that prevented muscle growth. all of CLX have some type of plyos.

Is anyone doing doubles with CLX? I know it was talked abut with P90X, so why not with CLX? Maybe a walk or some Turbo Jam, or would that be too much?

If I look at how P90X was designed, plyo is considered another leg workout. I don't know for certain.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what Cathe's saying. Plyo once a week during STS is OK, but not more if you want to avoid building up? Here is Cathe's answer to adding extra leg/glute work to STS for women who do not want to build up the glutes and legs. I don't want larger legs. I do want firmer glutes.

Tell me if that is your interpetation.
