Question about sore achy heels and feet...............

I did Body Max upper body segment and squats from Power Hour yesterday and did the first 2 segments from Body Max today. So my question is my feet are killing me, I can hardly go up and down the stairs. Could it be the exercising, poor form on squats or lunges or do I just need a new pair of tennis shoes. I currently have a pair of cross trainers by Avia, I have had them for about 3 years so I could be due a new pair. My heels really hurt bad.;( Does anybody else have any thoughts on the matter?
:) :D ;-)

Oh my Annette! I could never keep the same pair of workout shoes for 3 years. In my opinion you need a new pair of shoes! I'm sure that form can have something to do with it also, but my feet never feel great during Cathe workouts, BUT when my heels and or balls of my feet start falling asleep and/or hurting I know it is past time for a new pair of shoes! Good luck!::7

It sounds like you may have plantar fasciatis - when you sprain the muscle at the bottom of your foot. Good shoes are a must, and you may need to get a insert. Sometimes this sprain takes a long time to heal; if it continues to bother you for a long time you may even want to see a foot doctor, who could make you custom orthotics. I had foot problems for years, and after getting custom orthotics my feet feel trememdously better. Hope yours feel better soon!

You've gotten some great advice here. You definitely need new shoes. If you're working out 4-5 times/week you should be getting new shoes every 6 months--yearly at least.

My heels kill me after Cathe workout's too but I enjoy the workouts too much to stop. I may look into orthotics.

Good luck,
Kim

I agree with Rhonda, my prescribed orthotics make 100% difference for me! If it is Plantar Fasciatis (and it could very well be) Please don't let the pain continue for too long - my podiatrist told me the earlier the treatment, the more successful the recovery.

Done with being a nag now... ;-)

Going to soon, I got heel cup massaging inserts for the time being. I am going to need to soon though we are going to Las Vegas and I need my heel to feel better for all the walking we will do. LOL!!:7

Thanks for asking, my heel feels somewhat better with the heel cup in the shoe.:)

I would very much encourage getting new shoes immediately!! And even orthotics. I have extremely bad plantar fasciitis from a combination of overuse injury and sciatica. I am now in physical therapy 2 times a week and had new orthotics made by my podiatrist. It's devastating when plantar fasciitis gets to my stage...my days of stepping may be over and I love stepping. Kickboxing, running, high-low and even power walking are also painful right now and a no-no. Weight training (but no lunges) and the elliptical machine are the only things I can do. I'm so sad, but I'm working hard to try and improve my feet. The doctor says that plantar fasciitis can take months and even a year to heal and can reoccur if I'm not careful (ie wearing my orthotics, wearing shoes that offer good arch support, not stretching enough.).

Also, try really stretching your calves by standing on steps and dropping one heel off of the front of the step, one at a time. And stretch the arches of your feet by standing close to a wall and take the toes of one foot at time and run them down the base of the wall so that the toes of your feet are curling back towards the top of your foot (basically flexing your foot). You will feel a really good stretch on the bottom of your foot. Icing the bottoms of your feet and taking an anti-inflammatory like Aleve will also help.

Good luck and I hope that your feet feel better soon!!

Annette:

TOSS THOSE OLD CROSS TRAINERS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't ever wear them again, treat your feet right! They do so much for you!!!!!

I've been exercising for years and I can't work my legs hard two days in a row like that. Lunges are hard on the feet. You support all that weight with a bent foot. Impact is hard on the feet unless you have a special floor and proper shoes. You're doing all that work two days in a row. Also if you don't have perfect alignment in your hips, knees and ankles, you'll have problems even with good form.

You are learning your body's limitations. If I do a high rep weight workout for the legs such as Power Hour, I do something very low impact the next day. If I do high impact cardio with lots of jumping, I will just work the upper body the next day.

Put your feet up, and ice them. Give them a few days rest. Buy some new shoes and plan a rotation that does not max them out every workout day.

To give you an example, when I do the PS series, I do cardio on Monday and Wednesday and PS Legs on Friday. I do the two PS upper body ones on Tues and Thurs. If I want additional cardio, I'll do a gentle walk or bike ride on Saturday or Sunday.

Hi Annette,

I definitely agree about the sports shoes, you need a new pair. This was happenning to me at the beginning of the year, I was getting shin pain, my sports shoes were only 18 months old !!!!! I bought a pair of Nike Cross Trainers, and it felt like owning a new pair of feet ! LOL

To ease foot ache, try soaking your feet in a bowl of warm water for 20 minutes, post exercise.....heaven !!!!! :D

I was looking at this website and it has a lot of information on achy feet. It's very informative and tells you what you can do for all different kinds of foot conditions, including heel pain. Here's the link.
