i was so excited - i ordered some bsn dessert protein powder. it came today and i was reading all of the label. it says not for preggos or women who are nursing. well, i am nursing and prob. will be for at least another year. does anyone know why i wouldnt be able to use the powder? have any of you used pp's while nursing?

tia!

debbie, thanks for responding so quickly!

well, after nursing 3 babies you would've thought i'd have thought of that!

and i am so enjoying your dec. rotation, btw!:)

It also contains mono- and diglycerides as well as corn syrup solids, me personally, they couldn't pay me enough money to drink that stuff and not only if nursing or pregnant.

I know a lot of people here love it but from a health point of view I think it is one of the worst. Only my personal opinion though.

ITA with Carola! I've tried the most popular protein powders mentioned on the forums and aside from the list of icky ingredients, they also tasted terrible IMHO. I prefer to eat my calories anyway. :p ;)

Carola and Michelle, I totally agree that I would rather eat my calories! But it seems like all of the girls (and guys) who really build muscle use the powders. I was hoping this could help out a little...or a lot!:p

Chastity, thanks for the link - I'll look that up right now.

I was also thinking about the sweetener - pop, ice cream, all of that stuff has artificial sweeteners but there's no label for preg/nursing women to avoid them. Not that I would ever DARE eat ice cream!:p:eek:

well, ive got more thoughts but said baby is screamin'! brb....i hope!

You're welcome Kate. I like both the chocolate and the vanilla but prefer the chocolate. I add a half a frozen banana and 1/2 -1 cup of ice and it's like a chocolate milkshake. :)

I understand, I use protein powder as well. There are huge differences in protein powders. Jay Robb uses only natural ingredients and his whey protein is only from farm-raised, grass-fed cows and no growth hormones. http://www.jayrobb.com/jayRobbProtein.asp

DH usually gets pina colada and tropical dreamsicle flavors, I am boring and stick with plain ole vanilla. It's the only protein powder I have tried that tastes good. I use both egg white protein and whey protein powder.

I am not sure though that you actually can/should build muscle while nursing? I would double check with your health care provider if the amounts of protein you would need to build muscle are actually safe while nursing.

Carola - so, you like the Jay Robb? I tried Stevia sweetener and had tummy trouble but it also had something with it, I think. It wasn't just stevia, if I remember right. I've seen the Jay Robb at Whole Foods. I currently use ON Optimum Whey Natural. It is good but I had not considered the source of the whey - I want the cows who are giving me the milk to be treated nicely and fed well. Thanks for mentioning this brand.

thanks for the link...:)

...looks like i'm returning the bsn...

People rave about BSN and I don't get it. It's not all that tasty and is the most clumptastic of all the powders I have tried. The cinnamon bun is decent in oatmeal and the banana is so so. Then again, I think Lara bars are uber disgusting so what do I know...

jdbmga, that sounds so good!!!

carola, i appreciate your input - a lot! i will look into your pp also.
i have a post-partum appt w/ my midwife next week - i'll bring this up to her then. i know i'm not going to look like a body builder, esp. while nursing, but i was hoping for a little more oomph out of my muscles!:D

Hmmm, I would kill for a Cherry Larabar :D That's the only flavor that gets me excited. Otherwise I LOVE Dr. Weil's bars - YUMMY!!

Shana, yeah, Jay Robb's pp tastes really great, it doesn't clump and has a very subtle taste, not as overpowering as other protein powders. I mix it with different kinds of fruit / fruitjuices, yogurt/kefir for a smoothie or put it in my oatmeal.

Man. I would DIE without BSN LDP Whipped Vanilla in my oatmeal every morning. I remember reading that there's sugar in the stuff...

Eating healthy. It's such a crapshoot. Every time you think you've got it right you find out you're still not getting it. For instance, in trying to incorporate more vegetables into my diet I bought lots of frozen veggies on sale, including beans. Imagine my shock when upon putting a spoonful in my mouth all I could taste was salt. I checked the label: "beans, salt." Why? It's not like everybody doesn't have a salt shaker if they absolutely have to. But my point is that the only way to avoid all the things that are really bad for you is to read every label, know what those big words are, and spend a lot of money to avoid all the bad ingredients. I'm really starting to think that ordinary middle class people living on tight budgets can only eat so clean, until they hit the lottery.

I add a greens first product into my vanilla PP each morning after my workout. It is soooo yummy IMO. I like to use a PP like Muscle Milk Light that has a little bit of fat in it to make it creamy, makes me think I'm drinking a minty (very slight mint taste) milkshake. With the greens product I'm getting veggies and antioxidants of which I know I don't get enough of. Here's the link for the information on the greens first. http://www.greensfirst.com/gf_content2.asp?node=15

Lisa, what does the greens first taste like? It doesn't ruin the taste (sweetness) of the protein powder?
