I know I am probably going to get flamed big time for this, but I just won't read any replies, so I won't know about it! ;)
This is JMHO, but I've never known anyone to change their mind, *see the light*, or however you want to phrase it b/c of a political (or for that matter ~ religious) conversation. I have seen people become angry, hurt, ruin relationships, etc. b/c of them.:(
I only read about 5 posts on the Sarah Palin thread before I realized it could easily slide down a slippery slope and seemed to be inching that way. (I know it was started as a FUN thread, no criticism going on here), but it seemed to be headed into politics and discord (name calling had already occurred in the 1st page).
And,yes, freedom of speech, post, reading, etc. I get the concept, which is why I chose to stop reading VERY quickly and why I will not choose to read any other posts which have clearly stated inflammatory tags.
I think you all are such wonderful people and I have seen the care and concern you have for eachother and I get scared whenever there is any hint of confrontation. I just want everyone to be happy and get along! I don't ever want peoples' *feelers* to be hurt.
So, anyhoo, that is just my thought on public political (and religious) debate. Maybe Cathe isn't the place for it.
Just a thought! :p

I don't know I thought it was a pretty interesting thread. I respect everyone's opinion and it was interesting to learn a little more about people who post here. Just let's us get to know each other a bit better.

Actually if you read the entire thread, you will see that the conversation has stayed VERY cordial and informative the entire way through. There were a few posts on the first page where someone got frustrated with someone in one of the first few posts, but that was pretty much ignored and the conversation went on without a problem. You should check it out. We are all still buds on that thread. Don't let the large post count make you think it went downhill - because it absolutely DID NOT. I am super proud of everyone on that thread for expressing their feelings with 0 ill-will. I respect all of them and it was actually a fun discussion. :)

ITA. I admire the smart women here and enjoy the diversity of opinions. Plus the thread has been really respectful. And I may be in the minority but I in the past I have had my opinion changed by debating the issues.

Totally understand though if it's not some people's thing. :)

I agree, I have changed or modified my opinion based on discussions her. I enjoy these kinds of discussion as long as there are no personal attacks or demeaning remarks towards each other.

I think the mentioned thread has remained remarkably respectful and was just an exchange of opinions. I don't see anything wrong with it.

BUT don't count on me changing my opinion on the subject of the other thread :p:D:D:Dhttp://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZS

Did I miss another thread???

The Sarah Palin thread is actually quite remarkable - spirited without being vitriolic or ad hominem. It's what political debate could be if people worked out to Cathe more!

Now, if you really want to see people get seriously down and nasty, just go on the Turnstep bulletin boards and read any decent thread on safe step music speed. You know - what's REALLY important!

Nope, my bad, I wanted to say "But don't expect me to change my opinion on this subject any time soon." Originally I was typing that I have changed my opinion on other threads but only deleted half of my sentence

Truly it was a fun thread...it was informative and interesting...especially for a slow day at the office.

I don't get to have conversations like this much...I work in an office full of guys...ok...really just 3 and you know...guys always think they're right...and I'm just the girl in the office that tells them what to do and if they screwed up or didn't charge enough shipping...I'm just mean...smile.

Really, I can't wait to check to see what I missed in the morning!

I am actually grateful for the Sarah Palin thread. It helped me win an argument with DH! Just yesterday afternoon I mentioned to him the the Cathe forum is unlike any other out there because there are rarely ever any political threads and when there are it is a civil debate that doesn't degenerate into name calling. He said that was impossible. He said that can only happen if the moderator deletes all political threads before they get ugly. Our discussion about it got uglier than the Sarah Palin thread! So today I got to say I told you so all thanks to the classy people here.

Name-calling is what will ruin a good conversation every time. I never participate or respond in this manner myself, and the minute someone does that, my respect for them wavers to the point where I have trouble really hearing them.

If the personal attacks can be avoided, a political discussion can be very stimulating. :)

Horseshowmom . . . I do agree with you. I was reading through the thread and not too far into it I saw someone refer to Palin as "Satan". Sorry, but that comment might be expected from a 12 year old, but not from adults. The thread was about who she resembles, and that was where it should have stayed in my opinion.

And this is why I really try to stay away from these conversations....because something meant to be tongue in cheek (I didn't see where someone directly referred to her as Satan but perhaps I missed something) is interpreted in an entirely different manner. If having a sense of humor (granted this is somewhat subjective ;)) is equated with being a twelve year old than I guess I am proud to be permanently youthful while the those who look for offense in everything run out and buy their wrinkle cream.

Well, if that is the case be sure not to forget the following,
"You grow up the day you have your first real laugh at yourself."

I agree.
And if the thread would get nasty, it could be closed or removed from the forums.

HA! Well, the lonely "HA!" message was too short and a pop up came saying I needed to legthen my message to 10 characters or more. It should be long enough now....HA!

Well sometimes discussions start with one subject and evolve into a different one. I don't see anything wrong with that.

That being said there are topics that provide TMI for my taste and I would never post some of the things that are being discussed or asked. However, that is not up to me to decide, I am one person in a large crowd, I am not the forum police, this forum is not all about me and just because I disagree or don't want to talk about a specific topic doesn't mean it should be off limits for other people who want to discuss it. As long as there are no personal insults I am as happy as a clam.
