Political question (hopefully not too controversial!)

Just curious:

I see all sorts of "vote for" signs on people's yards, and one that stumps me is the one promoting someone for county coroner.

Why would anyone care who the coroner is (except family or friends, or--if one were in a big crime area, the local crime families)?

Do YOU care who your coroner is?

Nope.

I should care, just like I should care about judges and such. But so far I haven't found a great way to look up judicial records.

Hmm. Kathryn. That's an interesting one. I do enjoy watching Dr. G and I guess I'd be interested in the candidates education and history. You want someone who's really dedicated and thorough, and respectful.

Is there a lot of comptetition???????

From what I could find out, a county coroner isn't necessarily an actual doctor or medical professional. They are basically "advocates" for dead people. According to one site, they are a "law enforcement official, second only to the sheriff, who conducts inquests when necessary". So I guess that makes them somewhat important. ;) Now, what clout they have in making certain decisions based on political motivations/parties etc.., I have no idea, but I would imagine it's important to some people.

Patricia Cornwell used to be ours. Oh, wait, she was the Medical Examiner...that's not the same thing, is it?

I've never voted for a coroner, at least, not that I know of.

I live in the 5th safest county in the country according to crime (or lack of) stats and all the coroner does around here is twiddle his thumbs so it really doesn't matter in my area. :) If I lived in Indy I would be more concerned.

I just looked on the computer...the pay is around $60,000...
Our coroner lost his daughter in a tragic accident and after that he ran for coroner. To make sure that all children would be looked after.
I don't think I could handle that job though.
