picture taking hints

An old friend of mine who I haven't seen since college recently sent me her pic and wants me to send her one of me. I am 51 and have been working out for years...not at my fittest right now but the camera is funny. Sometimes I look goo''like in my 30's...and sometimes not so good. Which is best...outdoor pic I think would probably be better. A tan helps...I guess I have trouble facing reality since my friends are getting face lifts already. So how can i make myself look my best. Are there filters on digital cameras that soften. All replies appreciated!!

I think outdoor pictures would be best. also a tip, if you take in the early morning or early evening you will have better light, mid afternoon I am not sure why but the light is a lot more differant, also you want to watch where you have the sun, try differant ways to get the most out of your lighting and poses. Yes there are filters but you can also play with your photos in Paint shop pro or another photo program, What camera do you have? I have the Canon Digital Rebel and if you have one you can change the lense you might want to try a differant lense. You might want to talk to a camera store to see what filter you can use, if you can't change the lense then there is no filter you can use except go into a photo program to soften the picture or what effect you want You are welcome to e-mail me anytime if you have other photo questions. Hi Leslie Marie,

Thanks so much for the tips.I have a Canon Powershot and also have Photoshop Elements.....I have a hard time understanding Photoshop. I have bought books on the subject also, maybe I need to take a class. I may email you after I take the pic, which could be in a few weeks. Thanks again!

I don't know about the digital angle because I'm one of those die hards that loves working with B&W film. But as far as when the lighting is best for taking your picture outside around 10 am or 2 pm is good with noon being the worst time.

I have 2 professional model friends who gave me a few hints of the trade (one is a model in Perfect Ten Magazine). They told me never to look straight at the camera with with my full face...and to always keep my head at an angle (because no ones features are perfectly symmetrical). They also said if my body part bends (knees, arms etc).....make sure it is bent in the picture. Straight body parts always look very stiff and unnatural.

HTH,
Robin:)

I'm afraid I disagree with the tips to take your picture outside. Outdoor lighting shows every little thing!

Take your picture indoors with a good flash. It makes your skin smoother looking and really does hide any flaws you might be conscious of.

I absolutely agree with Jeanmarie. BUT if you are going to take a picture of *anything* outside the times I mentioned will give you better results.

Indoor pictures without proper lighting are unflattering, if you take outdoors in the proper lighting can be very flattering.

Wow.....really interesting view points on this. Christmas before last we took a family photo outside. My son's 16 year old friend took the pic. It was about 4pm...it came out so well...I looked 30, not 50. I want to replicate that....maybe it was just luck. I guess the answer is to take some pics frequently under diffeent conditions.....sooner or later, I'll hit the jackpot!

Whether it is your full body or your upper half, stand sideways at an angle because it makes you look thinner. Good luck.
