People undermine working out at home

I have to add my two cents here, as this has come up repeatedly in my life.

I have always worked out at home - going on 15 years now (I am now 33). Well, I used to dance and therefore, also got exercise at the studio (I also used to run and still do sometimes). But, since I stopped dancing a couple of years ago, I have worked out exclusively at home. I tried it in a gym once (one of those trial membership things) and found it very distracting to have to wait for equipment, having people talk to you (I know they are just trying to be friendly but I am here to sweat, not socialize dangit!) etc. I gave up the gym thing entirely due to the high quality workouts that are available at home and have found that I, personally, workout better alone, on my own time schedule, and wearing what I want to wear. Some people like to have workout buddies and use the gym as a way to socialize and that may work for them. For me, I just need to concentrate and focus and can only do that alone. Even when I am staying in a hotel that has a nice gym, I generally opt to work out to DVDs in my room using my laptop (unless I am traveling with a co-worker who talks me into going to the gym with him/her).

People ask me all the time what I "do" to be so fit. When I tell them I do work out DVDs I do get some skeptical looks. But I brag on Cathe and tell them that if they are serious about getting a good workout and haven't had luck with gyms, they should try her videos. Most of these people say they could never work out at home as they would never get motivated. For me, it's the opposite...I can't get motivated in a gym. It's all a matter of personal preference and I think everyone should respect others' ways of getting things accomplished. You can't argue with results, regardless of how they are accomplished, right? If anyone gets nasty with me and rolls their eyes because I work out at home, I just ignore them and silently pat myself on the back for being in better shape than that person is, most of the time. :)

I don't explain to people anymore about my workouts - they look at me like I'm nuts, but them, I'm not around too many people who work out, honestly. Most people I know don't work out - if they get exercise, it's because they have a physically demanding job. Otherwise, they don't get exercise on a regular basis.

Something that we home exercisers have that other people who workout don't have is a higher self-discipline capability. Many people go to the gym because they cannot make themselves work out in front of the TV, especially on a regular basis.

If I ever do speak to someone about my home workouts, I always talk about how "she" worked me today, and people wonder if I have a personal trainer that comes to the house - it makes me laugh, even though it feels just like I have a personal trainer when I work out with Cathe.

I'm with Dianna! I just can't seem to get motivated at a gym! First you have to get dressed in decent "public" clothing, then drive there, park, get a locker, THEN you can start (if you find a machine). I also get very distracted by watching other people. What can I say? I am a people watcher. Last week, while visiting in-laws, I joined the gym 4 blocks away for the week. Heck, for $19 for the week, as many classes as I wanted, it was a really good deal. Anyway, I was blessing Cathe every step of the way, because out of the 3 step classes I took, I kept up with them all the way, and was even singled out by the instructors for my "perfect" form in kickboxing (punches). One thing I noticed was that I am a stickler for form and figure why put myself at risk for injury with sloppy form. I guess that I really didn't realize this until I ended up behind several women EVERY class whose form was the absolute WORSE I have ever seen....all for the sake of saying that she was working out at the "advanced" level. Her bicep curls were all over the place (I had to duck to miss her elbows a couple of times) and her lunges went no where (barely a bent knee).
Anyway, I focus better when I only have Cathe and the gang to watch for form and don't get distracted by flying elbows!!!

I have been asked if I have a gym at home as well, I just tell them that I made room for one and leave it at that.

>I will never understand why people think
>their way is the only "right" way when they haven't even tried
>something else.

It is amazing, isn't it, how people can have such strong opinions about something they know nothing about?

Another "OO" zing: "was that your score in social skills?"

I'm at a point that I care if people respect me for working out at home or not. They can see the results. I don't tell them unless asked... so I'm kind of working out in-the-closet!

I don't get too mad at people who don't understand how effective home exercise videos actually are. I used to be one of those people myself!!! I was a devoted gym rat, and I believed the gym was the only way to get serious results. I thought home videos were for very overweight housewives who didn't want to move very far from the couch. Where I got that idea, I'll don't know.

In 1998, my workout partner kept asking me to try The Firm Vol. 1 for about 6 months before I finally agreed (just to get her off my back about it). I nearly quit after the warm-up...pelvic tucks? Are you kidding me? And Susan Harris looked more like a model than a fitness instructor.

Just as I was going to say I couldn't do it because it was waaaay too silly, Miss Susan picked up the weights. Okay, that wasn't bad. Then about 40 minutes into the tape, I sat on the floor because I couldn't breathe; I didn't even make it through the floor work. Shoot, I only thought I was fit.

After that, I switched to home exercise videos and dropped my gym memberships (I had two) and never looked back.

If people don't believe me when I tell them that the reason I'm fit is because of videos, then that's THEIR problem. In fact, it amuses me to know that if they aren't smart enough to make the connection, with me standing there and providing living proof that these videos do work, then to heck with 'em. I ain't casting my pearls before swine. *snort*

I feel your frustration. Not long ago I started taking spin class and this elderly looking man and I were talking about the class before it began. He asked if I took other classes at the gym and I said, "No, I work out in the morning at home." After class he came up to me and said, "Bet you don't get a workout like that in your basement!" I thought for a moment and then smiled and winked at him. That's it and I walked away. I wanted to explain, but then thought why do I need to explain this to him??? I know that I can and do get just as an intense workout with my Cathe cardio. I love the spin classes for cross-training though.

I read something in the church bulletin:

"Those who anger you, control you."

Now every time I get angry I think of it. It actually calms me down.

Don't let her get the best of you, just keep doing what you're doing and smile!!!! :7 :7 :7

i have to represent all of the home exercisers when i do go to the gym (i just joined) i may not be the skinniest one in the room but i hang with the teachers in the class better than anyone else thanks to cathe's workouts.

All right, folks, speak up for Cathe next time! I know, I know, choose your battles, but people might need to be educated! It's not about leg warmers and fire hydrant leg lifts anymore!

I've always loved live classes, but Cathe absolutely rocks, and I'm so glad I found this site. If my fave class falls on another day, or if I'm not teaching, Cathe vid, here I come!!!

I am amazed over and over and over with Cathe's quality -- The best I've seen!

I have some "extra" videos on hand that I pass out to the doubters. If anyone ever gives me grief about "home exercise videos", I offer to loan them one so they can see what I'm doing.

I've never had anyone tell me they were too easy! Most of the time they can't finish the workout. It eliminates any explaining about what I do at home! :p

I LOVE working out at home! I think I would have a hard time getting out of bed, dressed, then to a gym and have to drive home again!

It is good to hear others have a living room/gym right off their front door!

As for me, I have to keep the stuff out! It would be WAYYY too much work to get it out and put away every day!

I have to admit I was a total skeptic until I tried my first Cathe workout in 1997. Since then I have yet to find a home exercise instructor that comes even close to her quality & intensity. On the other hand, I have yet to find a health club instructor that comes close to her quality & intensity.

While I will never be a true home exerciser (to go back to what Evelyn says, when I have a choice betw. the couch & a workout, the couch will win every time, I just have no discipline. Not to mention I have serious space issues in my house--I have to rearrange my entire LR every morning just to step. Not to mention I do enjoy the options & social atmosphere a gym offers), these forums are what convinced me that home exercising can be just as effective as a health club routine.

Well, not these forums per say, but its members--people like McMain, WD, etc., who are buffer than I could ever be & never set foot in a gym. I'll never give up my health club, but I respect home exercisers just as much as I respect gym exercisers.

Oh, except for the truly obese people who have the courage to join a gym. They've got to have like 1000 times our courage to do it--how scary must it be to walk into this huge place w/all these fit people being heavy & having no clue what you're doing?--I have more respect for them than anyone........

My dh is the same way with w/o at home. He feels as though you get the "BEST" results from the gym. Me on the other hand totally disagree with him. I use to live in the gym, but for various reasons I quit and have been w/o from home for the past x amt. of yrs. I feel I got my "BEST" results from w/o at home. I've gotten many of compliments from ppl and my dh could not disagree with them, but he blames my results on genetics & genetics alone. I will admit to my having good genetics, but the results blossomed more with Cathe and I don't think I will go back to w/o solely at a gym.

That seems to be a running theme...if you look good, you work out in a gym, but if you work out at home, it's genetics!!

Dallas - I love that quote!! I will definitely remember that from now on.

Anyone who can look at you (or the collective us) and say that home exercising doesn't work is obviously blind. I'm in the best shape of my life (even though I'd like to be fitter, I'm still in the best shape I've ever been!) and it's all because of Cathe.

So "Phooey" to anyone who says it can't be done.
