Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/6

Diane Sue...Yes I have them in folders by instructor then by DVD. Some of my random YouTube workouts I lump together by workout type...Barre, Rebounding, Hiit, etc. I really love that I have quick access to all my workouts. I do have a second hard drive that I have backed everything up. Never can be too safe.

Lori-I really need to digitize my workouts too. I have a few Cathe downloads and I preordered the downloads for Fit Split. I do have quite a few of the Spinervals downloaded and on a USB drive. It would be nice to get out of the DVD habit.

I only gained a few pounds, and yesterday, I ate almost a half gallon of Bryer's Ice Cream in one of my favorite flavors Cherry Vanilla. It does not matter how much I eat from that great bakery, either. I did a prettIkey good lower body workout, and I can now lift 40 pounds again. I had been so weak that I was doing squats with 24 pounds, Now I can mix up 30 and 40 pounds. I am going back to Staten Island, and the reason is that Frank does not want me to work. I am getting very bored and fidgety, and I feel like I am doing nothing all day. I will look at the new workouts, but I do not think I will buy them. I would need to make more money.

I did High reps and abs again today. we are still suffering with awful air quality. it is not wise to exercise outside now, it is that bad. Hiking is very rough this year. a wet spring and now hot dry summer have produced a record bug level. I can't hike until the level drops down. I am still suffering from the welts from a month ago. they don't go away. fly bites.

The HOA has been very forthright and clear about the whole process. we get quarterly newsletters. there were no secrets, it has been discussed for years and voted on a year ago. a big percentage of us have been hit by burglary or vandalism. we wanted a gate forever!. this person is a loose cannon on deck. she was a problem person from the get-go. the penalty is she will get a second code to get in and out, and if she does anything funny with it, she won't get another. so she will have trouble coming home without someone to let her in. we think she or someone in her family is the person who forced the gate open, and giving her the bill for repair will be good punishment. they have a video of the person forcing the gate.

Lori if you don't hike often, were you doing this in tennies? lug soled shoes or boots go a long way to help from sliding. but sometimes conditions are just not good and it's best to bag it and go another day. dogs have natural crampons plus lower to the ground and 4 legs.

DH and his sisters and brother are lucky they all lived!. they did not have "helicopter" parents for sure. the unconscious event was too much. could not believe they just let him lie there. lucky it turned out OK.

Good morning,

Went to my PCP yesterday, got results of test...have a UTI along with the other stuff. Ugh...UTI with no symptoms? strange...also being tested for C-Diff since I had it before and the symptoms are pretty similar to that.

Valerie, that is really strange about that girl and the gate. Putting the entry code on FB is SO wrong!! There should be a penalty to the home owners or whoever for that! Paying for the gate is good.

Carolyn, glad you were able to get the STS DVD's to work. I would have been in a panic too!

Judy, How do you like Basic Step? Is it easy to do? I always thought that if I really wanted to like Cathe's step workouts I should go back and start with that one. yes, feeling a little better. I need to figure out how to transition from soft foods to regular foods....not sure what I can or cannot eat.

Diane Sue, it sounds like you are having a great time with the grandkids!

Lori, I have to smile when you describe working out with your son...that is so great.

Caitlin, sorry to hear about your weight issues. I hope you are able to figure out a way to gain some weight. Maybe consult a nutritionist? So you are moving back to Staten Island permanently?

Take care,

Deb-I'm sorry about the UTI :( I hope you don't have C-Diff. I decided I wanted to try to learn Cathe's step so I can do some of her other more advanced step workouts. I'm going to do Basic Step 2-3 times a week until I get it down. It's fun, and only 30 minutes so not bad at all. It's still complicated to me, and it will take a while, but I think I'll get it eventually.

she's claiming her fb post was to a "limited" audience, not available to everyone. she was ratted out by several people from our HOA who were invited and reported it to our board members. we all paid a significant amount over a year. the gate is still not working. saw someone working on it yesterday but still not operational when I came back from shopping at 4.

Judy you are a brave women! an admirable goal. I absolutely can't do step and don't even try. Even when there are little bits included in other workouts, I usually do an extremely basic workaround. just stepping on and off and never turning around. oh it is awful to watch!

Deb, I also hope you don't have c diff again. I guess antibiotics for a UTI might be a factor leading toward a c diff infection. a UTI with no symptoms is weird. usually it is so apparent.
I would think any mild flavored foods you like would be a good start. toast? cereal? scrambled eggs? banana? yogurt? that milk shake I would love to have? I am always hungry and have cravings sometimes for odd things. peanut butter toast would be first on my recovery list. but I don't remember what you can or can't eat. obviously dairy is on my favorite list.

Caitlin I have the opposite problem. my ice cream serving is one tablespoon. one. have you had thyroid function testing? my SIL has a hyperthyroidism problem and unintentional weight loss is her main issue.

My technical ignorance here... what kind of screen do you do workouts from? Do you play these thru your TV without a DVD player?

Today was disc 2 Back and Triceps. My weight selections seemed appropriate except for one exercise where I felt that I could have gone heavier. Although I have never done the official STS rotation, I have done many of the workouts from the different mesocycles.

Judy, Basic Step is good for learning Cathe's basic moves. It's short and does not move very quickly. I love step workouts! As with all of her workouts, I modify when needed and I won't do many pivot turns.

Deb, Basic Step would be a good one to try if you want to learn step movements. Maybe just a small segment at a time to avoid frustration. I hope you feel better soon.

Lori, Body Max 2 is very long, about 90 minutes. I made the mistake of doing the full workout a couple of times, but switched to premixes after that.

Diane Sue, I know you are enjoying the grandchildren even though they keep you busy.

Hello to Valerie and Caitlin.

Good evening ladies!

This morning I did 3 short rebounding workouts. A BBS dance, then 2 Bellicon ones. One of the Bellicon ones had some really tough barre movements. Really worked my legs. This was my ony workout. 45 mins. / 302 cal. Came home to have a nice glass of wine poured for me. Was a rough day at work and my husband knows how to make me happy! :)

Deb...oh no! A UTI on top of everything else. So sorry about this. What is C-Diff? Vitamin C deficiency? I enjoy working out with my son. I really do not want it to end.

Valerie...limited or not that should not have been posted. I do have hiking boots but did not wear them this last hike. I have had them for years and I am sure not as good as yours. Last year I bought some Reebok Trail sneakers with a really deep tread. Thought they would be good for what we do and they have been up until this weekend. Also, keep in mind my hiking is probably like a rugged trail to you with a few large rocks to get over! I connect my hard drive directly to my TV using a USB cord. Or if using my laptop to stream I connect with an HDMI cord. It really is quite easy and extremely convenient.

Judy...yes we have done all the excerises at one point or another. I wonder if it was Body Max 2 then that I am thinking of. I just remember it being so long.

Caitlin...a few pounds is still good! Great job on the weights!

Have a great evening all!

Today I did Ice Rock'm Sock'm time saver #3 Blizzard Blast and Muscle Meltdown Triceps, 48 minutes, 288 calories. I needed to get done quick and wanted a little strength work. Tomorrow will probably be a rest day. I have another grandchild coming and we will be busy with activity all day, plus the parents will be back tomorrow so we will be packing up their things.

Lori, that is good that you keep your workouts backed up on more than one device. Those things are not infallible. Nice workout today even if it was a short one. Sorry you had a tough day at work today.

Deb, that is too bad there is a UTI on top of everything else. Hopefully they caught it at the start and it clears up quickly. How are the dogs doing?

Judy, once you learn some of Cathe's step workouts it seems it is not so hard catching on to others. I still have to think through a few of the older ones when I have not done them in a very long time. Some are a bit more tricky than others as far as turns etc.. I think they are a lot of fun. I have the basic one, but can not remember much about it. I think it was basic step up and down and maybe some end to end turns? I like the variety of being able to do different forms of cardio. It seems the step portions of most of the boot camp type workouts is not as heavy on tricky choreography.

Caitlin, I used to be able to get away with most of a half gallon carton of ice cream at once. Even a half box of breakfast cereal was not unusual for breakfast. Since menopause and not working like I did with watching children and running all over, I cannot do that anymore. I would put on unwanted fat. Good for you, gaining a little weight.

Valerie, I hope that girl gets some sort of punishment for her actions. That is not good that the gate is still not working. When I run movies from a device it is generally through an HDMI cable. I think newer smart televisions can also use a USB type port but not sure.

Carolyn, I sometimes feel that I could have went heavier. Although I wasn't willing to go back and repeat at the time. LOL Nice work on STS.

Our gate is back up and functioning today. apparently there was some problem with how it was installed and it should not have been that easily pushed out of service. the problem tenant, a renter, is leaving, and the home owner is moving back into the house. not sure of timeline or what that conversation might have been. since she is a renter and leaving, I think our chances of recovering costs are slim, but we will see. maybe the property owner is responsible and will need to pay up.

Lori you can get decent lug soled light weight hikers for $50 to $100. they will last for years. you don't need to "invest" in multi hundred dollar boots anymore. even decent trail runner tennies would be fine but it is up to what works for a person. I need more ankle and foot support than a trail runner. my favorite boots were $130 and on sale for less..... Oboze brand light weight hikers. I have pretty awful feet so need to spend more than many. If it's wet with greasy mud, everyone ends up on their butt! sometimes conditions are not good., I have more trouble when it's very dry and I slide on loose gravel.

Good morning,

Still struggling to find things to eat. I need to move to a low fiber diet, (for now), before eating all regular foods. I guess the ones I need to be really careful of for a while are vegetables like broccoli etc.

Judy, I may try that someday. I used to do a lot of step workouts, and used to attend the step classes at the gym I belonged to, but that was years ago. I used to use Gin Miller a lot. When I tried Cathe's step workouts, (Imax 2 was the first) I was blown away with how difficult they were. I got frustrated with them and quit doing step all together.

Valerie, thanks for some suggestions on food. I have used dairy a lot...and am heading towards ice cream because I am losing way too much weight. I use my phone with a Chromecast and my TV in the basement to stream the Cathe Live workouts. Also have a DVD player there to use with the TV. I think they should make the homeowners pay since they rented their home to someone irresponsible.

Carolyn, it sounds like you are enjoying STS. What are you using for the cardio days?

Lori, C-Diff is a bacterial issue in the intestine...it can start when the good bacteria you have are killed off in some way, usually with taking too many antibiotics. You should talk your son into doing STS with you when you are done with P90X.

Diane Sue, that's good that you got in a short workout. The dogs are good, Kylee is favoring one of her front legs though....the one that got the worst of it. The vet said she was okay for agility..I took her last night, did one run and she starting limping, so we left.

Have a great day!

C diff is an abbreviation for clostridium difficile. it's a gut bacteria that is resistant to most antibiotics. if you take a long course of antibiotics, all the normal bacterial residents of the colon ( billlions of them) can get killed off leaving mainly the resistant one, c. diff to flourish and cause problems. Because all types of bacteria are developing resistance to antibiotics, it takes longer and stronger courses of drugs to kill off infections. this has led to c. diff being a more common problem because all it's competition gets wiped out.

Deb no idea what kinds of things you like. rice is pretty easy to digest and white rice does not have a lot of fiber. do you like rice pudding? potatoes? mashed potatoes? sweet potatoes? I keep circling back to those milkshakes! or a half gallon of cherry vanilla like Caitlin. the Ice Cream Diet!. meat, chicken, seafood don't have much fiber. Your diet has been in such turmoil for so long I can't guess what might sound good to you. guessing most raw vegies are too fibrous, but things like bananas, peaches? Hope Kylee can ease back into training.

We did a small hike yesterday with cousin, wife, and a visiting relative. we are still suffering with awful air quality. sort of like China must look like. we've been told many times it will clear but it looks now like tomorrow and over the weekend it will finally return to normal.

the HOA printed up a detailed description of the woman who pushed the gate open. they hope someone will identify her. she probably lives here or lives with someone who does. police have been contacted too so we will see where this goes. they say they have a clear view of her face. estimated age at 16-20. a lot of the electrical work on the gate was done by a neighbor who is an electrical engineer. apparently he was given some wrong equipment pieces to install. wondering if they maybe will not bill us for repairs since the wrong part was supplied and given to install.

Today I did Kick, Punch, and Crunch. I did a timesaver that omits combo 3, and I added on the stability ball Abs. Total time was 65 minutes with 446 calories burned. Average heart rate was 124 and maximum heart rate was 160.

For my cardio days I am using some of the suggestions from Cathe's STS cardio suggestions or substituting a similar workout. She has a suggested cardio rotation in the STS forum and the Shock Cardio rotation in the regular rotations forum.

Deb, I can see why you avoid Cathe step workouts if you started with IMAX 2!! That one is quite a challenge. Low Impact Step is another good one to start with. It is 10 minutes longer than Basic Step but still has mostly basic moves. Basic Step was included with my step when I purchased it. Low Impact Step was my first Cathe step DVD purchase after I did Gin Miller for a while.

Judy, do you have Low Impact Step? It would give you some variety as you learn the moves.

Valerie, that situation with the gate is unbelievable. The idea that someone would put the code on Facebook is ridiculous. I hope they are able to find the girl. I bought a box of the Outshine bars for my husband. I think he will like them.

Diane Sue, if I feel like I should have used a heavier weight I will make a note on my sheet. I am not going to go back and do it over either.

Lori, great job on working out with your son.

Hello to Caitlin.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was some barre and bouncing. Did some SB lower body targets and then a Bellicon Hiit bounce. 35 mins/ 225 cals.Tonight I was too tired to do P90X Chest and Arms. Nilla kept us up most of the night. Up and down, up and down, crying to get back up. Just went on and on. Amazing I was able to workout this morning but came home and after my drive I was tired. I ended up doing a BBS shoulder, bis and tris workout followed up with SB's quick Bis and Tris. 18 mins. Short but wow the BBS really gets me deep in the muscle and I got a hreat little workout in. I would never have lasted the 50 mins of the P90x workout. My son was kind of grumpy that I did not do it. Told him that is the chance he takes with me doing and evening workout. I am not 26 years old!

Diane Sue...today was another tough day at the office. We leave for vacation Saturday to our time share on the Cape and I have so much to accomplish before I leave the office tomorrow. I am planning to bring my large Jumpsport. It is the folding one so it should be fine to bring. I need to take the bar off and assemble once I arrive. At some point going to try and do FT Bootcamp using the bar on the tramp. We will see how this goes. Looking forward to Cathe's Live Travel workout too.

Judy...I watched the clip of today's Live class nd at first I thoight it looked fun, but, then reality set in and I thought who am I kidding? I will never do that workout!!! Good for you wanting to learn. Years ago I started with Mega Step Blast and loved it. Then bought a couple more of cathe steps and they were getting harder and harder for me to enjoy. I guess it is just not for me.

Deb...yes I agree with Carolyn, Imax 2 is a tough one. I happen to really like imax 1 and 2. Did not care for the 3rd. I do not even remember it. Pretty sure I gave it away. C-diff sounds horrible. Hoping the tests come back negative on that one. I did mention STS to him and he is interested. Going to start with meso 2 though. Next week is the week of no weights, kenpo, yoga and core cynergistics. I have no interest in any of those. Going to do my own thing while on vacation then picking up when we get back.

Valerie...I hope they figure out who that girl was. Fingers crossed you do not het billed for the repair work. Your air quality sounds terrible. Is this normal this time of year or just a fluke?

Carolyn...KPC is supposed to be a really great workout. It has been mentioned many times. Been ages since I have done it so barely remember it.

Have a great night all!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Lower Body Sculpting and today I did Basic Step. I feel like it's starting to get a little easier to follow after doing a couple of times.

Deb-I used to do step workouts at the gym too, way back in the early 90's. I have a Gin Miller DVD and that step reminds me of the classes I took. Basic Step isn't too bad.

Diane Sue-I like the variety of being able to do different kinds of cardio too. I think it's going to help me to add step workouts to my routine, so that I don't rely only on cycling for cardio.

Carolyn-Yes, I have a DVD that has Basic Step, Body Fusion and Low Impact Step. I have a feeling I will be using it for quite before I move onto any other step workouts.

Lori-I haven't looked at the Live clip yet, but I can only imagine! Great job with the SB workouts!
I'm sorry that Nilla kept you up :(

Valerie-That is just horrible about the gate. I can't believe she put the code on Facebook.

Hi to Caitlin!

Judy

No formal workout today. air quality is still crap. No this is not "normal". it is a fluke due to very significant ongoing fires in british Columbia, and the wind direction being "off shore" rather than onshore. this is bringing hot, polluted air down from Canada. It has to be worse in Canada so I feel for all those people. supposedly a whole bunch of new fires were sparked by lightning a day or two ago. supposedly the high pressure system will fall apart by late Friday into Saturday. I don't want to think about how many times they have been wrong already.
I got a lot of shopping done today, really all of it. it should be less trouble each time we go from now on if we plan this right. I'm not so good at deciding what we will eat for a week though. I tend to think of something on the same day. also got laundry done, and some packing.

I used to like KPC a lot. that was as close to a step workout as I every got. I plan on taking it along this trip. I remember trying gin Miller, and also Kathy Smith (??) but I could not do it at all. I can't dance a step in any way and get hopelessly confused. and frustrated. KPC would be good since it doesn't need any equipment. I bought a resistance band, and 5 lb dumbbells, and may take a few over with me if there is room in the car.
our kitty didn't come in at his usual time today and had us worried something happened. I found him at 5:30 strolling in from the shrubbery like he hadn't done anything wrong. usually he comes in by himself between 3-4, and usually comes when called if a different time. not today. we have been giving him the kitty equivalent of glucosamine because he seemed to be having a hip problem, and now he's walking better and thinks he's 2 yo again. jumping up on everything including the deck railing that is not very wide. Lori, older pets and sure frustrate and scare us.

Good morning,

The test came back positive for C-Diff. Ugh…not sure how I got it this time, since I was not on antibiotics etc. All I can think of is that I had not taken any probiotics for a couple of weeks, thinking maybe they were causing the heartburn. :(.

Valerie, thanks for all the suggestions! Right now I am in turmoil, thinking maybe it was never diverticulitis in the first place. I always had a "diverticuli" in my results for colonoscopy, but my GI doctor used to mention it, but never say I had to do anything special except a high fiber diet. The NP saw that and did a CT scan, and said it was diverticulitis. I guess I will need to wait until I see the GI dr on Wednesday to see what he thinks. I have started on bananas, had some pasta last night, eating white bread only (!!!) and cheeses. All poultry is ok and fish too. I hope your air quality improves so you can enjoy your outdoors more. Are you planning a trip to the other house soon?

Carolyn, thanks for reminding me about Low Impact Step...It is with the Low Impact Series I believe.

Lori, poor little Nilla, I hope she had a better night last night ( and you too!). Will you be taking her with you on vacation? I remember not doing the Kenpo, Plyo or Core for P90X either. Just did other similar workouts and the treadmill. Good that those are scheduled for next week when you will be away anyway and can do your own thing. I didn;'t see what Cathe did yesterday, will go over and check it out. I am still having issues with the streaming service. Cannot get anything that was filmed before Oct of 2015.

Judy, good that you are subbing step for cardio. It will give your back a break.

Meeting a friend from work for lunch today...I guess I will have eggs and toast....again...

Take care,

From yesterday that I forgot to post. I was just starting to read and post and got interrupted and never got back
Valerie, I am glad that your gate is fixed. I bet everyone will be glad the renter is gone.

Deb, I am sure that it is hard finding foods to eat. They didnt give you suggestion.

Today I did Strong and Sweaty PHA training with the abs, 64 minutes, 278 calories, heart rate 107 avg./ 144 max. This had me at 56% fat burn today. I have so much to do today with running and cleaning. I am tired!! Very little sleep with all of this coughing and allergies. My grandchildren went home last night.
Workout today was lighter than I would normally go. I just didn't have the energy to extra into it. Yesterday I did not workout. Just too tired and last day the grandchildren were here, plus I had my 6 year old grandson come as well since Thursdays are our fun day together.
Cathe's weights or a little more.
Group 1 exercises 12 reps all
squat off the end 15#all 3 rounds
