Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/6

this should be our last day of smoke. we will do a regular ride. that doesn't involve the deep breathing of mt biking. we sure are tired of this. the gate is working OK now, and we hope the renter is out soon, but no way I will know unless I see a moving van. I think she is the ex girlfriend of the owner, or something like that.

Deb, you sure have had a rough series of events! I would trust the GI doc's opinion over any others. I also have diverticuli (on colonoscopy) but never had a bit of trouble. I'm not supposed to eat small seeds like sesame seeds, or berries with seeds but I love them and until they cause a problem, I will enjoy them. so many whole fiber breads have little seeds in them these days. but I sure like things like a crispy French baguette ..white bread, in fact, but better! I work very hard at keeping my diet extremely high fiber and eat what I like which is a lot of fruit , vegies, grains, dairy. light on chicken and fish. To get more fiber, I use Metamucil capsules which are psyllium fiber. (even a high fiber diet is not enough for me). it works well, and not the unbearable powdered stuff dissolved in liquid. But.. I would not add anything like that unless you get the go ahead from GI. Eggs? fruit smoothies?
I would have suggested pasta but I wasn't sure if you were avoiding wheat. I know you can get GF pasta but I would not avoid gluten unless you have an actual problem with it.

we are heading to our new house this weekend, but I will have internet service most of the way, and should when we get there too.

Today was STS disc 3, Legs. I had to modify a couple of the exercises because I couldn't maintain my balance and squat on one leg. Same with wall squats--I can't lift my leg while doing it. Other than that, it was a great workout. I briefly considered doing a short cardio afterwards, but didn't have the energy.

Hello to everyone.

I did Basic Step again today. It's getting much easier for me to follow now. I'm using 1 riser but may increase to 2 next week. I also added the stability ball abs from High Step Circuit.

Valerie, I am glad you found your cat. That would be worrying. Are you taking him with you this weekend? Will the air quality be good at your new house so you can get outside more. I am guessing yes, as it is quite a drive. Hopefully someone can identify the girl.

Deb, that is good that you found a few things you can eat now. I am sorry the tests came back positive. I had never heard of C-dif before this. I would not have thought that a couple of weeks without extra probiotics would make a difference though. That is good that Kylee is able to do agility class again. That is too bad that she was limping though.

Carolyn, if I remember right combo 3 was always my favorite on KPC. That is another one that I have not done in years. I need to check out those cardio recommendations with STS. I never looked at them before. I always just used Shock Cardio however I wanted to fit it in. I didn't know there was other suggestions. I make a not about going heavier on the work sheets, but too often I just pull a workout and do it. I kind of like how the later worksheets are that Cathe has out because you can look back on the sheet you are writing on and see what you did before At least till the sheet is full. Although STS is set up a whole lot different and I have all kinds of notes on those work sheets. I went and checked and I do have that workout with Basic Step, Fusion , and the Low Impact. Odd, I do not remember ever doing the low impact and maybe doing the step 2 or 3 times as I was used to other step workouts. I must just flip right by it and not see it when choosing workouts. I remember doing the fusion one though.

Lori, nice workout even if you did not do P90X. I am not one to want to workout in the evening. Once I am done in the morning, that is it. Only rare times have I done workouts later in the day. I would think you could do a lot of FT bootcamp with the bar on the Jump Sport. It will be nice for you having it with you.

Judy, that is great that you are getting Basic step down.

No, Puss stays here this time. we are going for less than a week and getting deliveries. placing an electrical floor plug and a thermostat upgrade and maybe a security camera so we can monitor from here. getting an area rug..gotta see where the carpet ends up before we can place the plug. we will maybe take Puss next time when we stay longer. we think he can tell we're going to leave him here, and that's why he doesn't come in as usual.

C. diff is a pretty common problem these days. it used to be fast and simple to treat someone with any infection with antibiotics. now, because of the bacteria developing drug resistance, it takes longer treatment, sometimes multiple drugs. the drugs kill off normal flora, and what is left are resistant bacteria like c. diff. usually a special treatment protocol to get the c diff under control, and then get the normal bacterial residents of the colon re-established.

I never had cathes basic step, but gin miller & Kathy smith didn't work for me. I was so aggravated I joyously threw the disks away. I don't think I would ever be happy doing it. Judy, I think that's smart to try something else to get in cardio but in a different way.

I like doing weight workouts later in the day. a lot of times I do it right before dinner. I don't like cardio later.

we have looked at the smoke pattern and it looks like it will clear here by tomorrow. MT so far has not had a problem, but if we get some rain here, there might be thunderstorms in the mountains and that can change everything .

Valerie, thank you for explaining C.diff. If I were to do a second workout it would be weights or yoga or something other than cardio. Something not too sweaty and heart pumping. I hope that your trip goes well and the air clears for you tomorrow.

Good morning,

Nothing new here...just trying to eat enough and hopefully get better soon.

Valerie, glad the gate is now fixed. I hope they kick that person out! I used to take Metamucil as it helps digestion. That was during the worst time with heartburn. I wish I had never stopped. I will be asking all about fiber, seeds, nuts etc at my GI appointment Wednesday. Until then, I am playing it safe. Yes, pasta and eggs are ok, so have been eating that. Have a safe trip!

Judy, yes, they extended the med that I am on for the diverticulitis to cover the C-Diff. Hopefully this will work. You're doing great with the step workout!

Carolyn, I remember having a tough time with those wall squats with the ball, and lifting my leg!

Diane Sue, how long do you have the grandkids?

Lori, safe travels!

I am not sure about taking Kylee to agility this morning. I'll see how she is doing...and decide...

Have a great weekend!

Deb..so sorrynthatnyou do have C-Diff!! When are you going tomget a break???

Leaving this morning for a week on the Cape. Going to try and do a lower barre workout this morning before I leave. Going to the Brazilian Grille tonight so really want to get a workout in! Not bringing any weights other than my 1.5 ankle and 1lb hand weights. The plan is to only use bands all week and the jumpsport. I have my workouts selected and ready to go! Will catch up with everyone later tonight or tomorrow.

Deb, I hope you see improvement soon. The grandchildren lefy Thursday night. That is why yesterday was a catch up day of putting things back together and running errands.

Lori, that is nice th a t you have your workouts planned out. Enjoy the Brazillian grill tonight.

We talked to our neighbor who (on the homeowner board) and learned someone else hit the gate with their vehicle, trying to get thru before it was fully open. caused some damage and surely damaged his vehicle. You would not think this was that difficult, would you? gates are pretty common things. gate has been working as far as I know but not a real good track record so far.

Deb I have diverticulitis too. I tried "dissolveable" fiber supplements . could not stand them!! then wheat bran mixed in cereal for years. a year or two ago I noticed psyllium fiber capsules. I forget what the brand name is... maybe Fiberall? no gritty, slimy awful flavor of the dissolvable supplements. I tried a small bottle first. I get it at Costco, Kirkland brand, for much less. I experimented until I found the right number of capsules and time of day to take them. you need to drink a good amount of water with them, but that is fine as long as it's plain water. I eat an extremely high fiber diet in addition. I bought a colorful set of Contigo water bottles. fill them with filtered water, keep in the frig. I drink a 24 oz bottle before I get up, and another 16 oz with breakfast. I am well hydrated!. diverticuli are little pockets in the inside walls of the colon. maybe the c diff bacteria are hard to reach in the pockets? I think reflux treatment with acid blockers may have something to do with it too. Hope you get some good information from GI on wed.

Lori have a good weekend! you are so dedicated..taking equipment with you. I will take some things with me this visit too.

Our weather finally has cleared over night. we got a tiny rain sprinkle and it's cloudy, but the stinky stale air is gone. probably will rain some tomorrow. can't wait! it is so dry.

Today I did Yoga Relax, the full workout, for 52 minutes. I had an appointment at the hair salon then a brief stop at the store for grassfed beef. My husband wants burgers tonight.

Valerie, I hope your trip goes well and that you can enjoy your time there. I think I just heard that there were some fires in Montana now from lightning strikes. Do you do cardio dvds or only strength? You might like Jessica Smith dvds for cardio when you can't get outside since there is no real choreography.

Deb, you have had some serious challenges. It seems that treating one problem contributed to another. Hope you are better soon.

Diane Sue, the Cathe rotation with suggested cardio was done before the Shock Cardio series was released and uses many of the older dvds. There are so many more choices available now and I plan to use some of the newer cardio options.

Judy, you are doing great with learning the step movements.

Lori, enjoy the Cape!

Caitlin are you moving back or going for a visit?

Have a great day.

Today I did CTX 10,10,10 warm up and cardio, 30 minutes, 210 calories, heart rate avg. 146/max 184, 2798 steps, followed by CTX Power Circuits cardio, planks, abs, and stretch, 43 minutes, 208 calories, heart rate 126/179 max, 2,506 steps. I finished off with Kelly Coffey's Body Design yoga segment, 13 minutes, 34 calories. Total time was 86 minutes, calories burned 452. Afterward we went to mid afternoon lunch/dinner and took a drive to another city to look around.

Valerie, I can't believe someone would not wait for the gait to completely open and hit it. What is wrong with people anyway. My daughter has an automatic gate on her property. I push in the code and wait. How hard is that? That is great that the air has cleared finally. It has been so dry here and now we are finally getting rain. Usually late July and August are our dry months. I don't think we had any rain at all in June. My husband mentioned today when we left that he had not seen hardly any flowers on our morning glories in the planter in front. I saw a couple this morning since we had so much cloud cover, but it was not the usual burst of color.

Carolyn, I went and looked at the the cardio suggestions for STS this morning. That is what prompted me to pull out CTX this morning. i have not done these in years. They are still great workouts. I do remember now that a lot of the older step workouts seemed to require a bit more space. Particularly moving around the step and into jacks and hops etc.. I had to move some things.

Well, diane sue...our thoughts exactly. How impatient are these people? where are you going in such a tearing hurry?? plus, it's likely a property owner who paid a bunch for the layer of security the gate provides and now they are hitting it with their cars. Arrgh!! people!!

Did High reps again today. it is a lot harder with the leg parts. at first I was doing the upper only but now doing the whole disk. it seems to move very quickly when the leg parts are in. very hard to transition equipment that fast!
the "Upper only" premix is moderate speed, but the leg parts toughen it up and speed it significantly. I can't change barbell weights anywhere near fast enough. I need to pause it.

july and august are usually dry here, but this was a record for length of time without rain. 57 days. everything is bone dry. dust bowl. lawns are dead. supposed to rain tonight. if we miss it, it will again be a while before another chance.

Carolyn I do cardio dvds mostly in my off season. usually when weather is good I use riding, road and mountain, and hiking for my cardio. this year it is so dry, hot, and bug ridden, I will not be doing hiking until it settles down. fly bites itch for weeks for me. this is the worst year I have heard of for flies. it's been too hot to get up and down a trail before the flies are out and biting. plus we had the polluted air. trip reports make me feel vindicated... so many people turning around after an hour or two because it is too awful to continue. I am not exaggerating when I say how bad it is this year. we are hopeing to get better conditions in MT.
