Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/31

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live Crush It Low Impact (35 min.). I wanted a short workout because I also spent the morning cleaning. I like to do my cleaning on Thursday and Friday before Jacob's Pillow on Saturday, so I don't have that to do before dressing up for the dance.

Judy, that is a funny picture of Chino. Deb is right--I always refer to Leslie as aka "Cackle and Shriek." She really has a very grating voice and laugh to my ears. I did her walking workouts a lot for awhile, when I was coming back from knee issues. I bet it will be fun looking at the real estate available in your area. It's still a great time to be home-buying with mortgage rates so low.

Deb, are the workouts that came with the new tower much shorter? I have gradually gotten better with those planks with triceps kickbacks. I think that the trick (at least for me) is to plant my feet pretty wide and more of a tripod than a flat back plank. What I have problems with are those soldier planks, where you lift one leg and the opposite arm. I fall over a lot.

Lori, that's a great price for a 20 lb. body bar. My old Firm barbell is pretty easy to turn into a 20 lb. one.

ttfn

Today I used the rebounder. Both Kelli Roberts URX-MT workouts skipping the warm up on the second one. Maximum Metabolic Intervals using 3# sand weights and switching to 3 dumbbells for hand comfort, 48 minutes, 286 calories. Poly performance, Metabolic Plyometric Circuits, 48 minutes, 302 calories using 3# dumb bells instead of the sand weights. That one uses weights through most of it. Total time was 96 minutes, calories burned 588. The second dvd kept freezing up at the last. I took it out twice and cleaned it off I cannot see anything on it .I will have to try it on a different player.

Lori, I only have an 11 # body bar. I sometimes have wished that I had a heavier one. I got it when I was doing a lot of Kimberly Spreen combat stuff. Amy Bento used an 18# in one of hers for some work and I always wanted a bit heavier one. I just used a barbell. My first barbell is way too long though. It was great when I got the shorter ez curl bar and then the one that came with Les Mills Combat.

Deb, we all have our favorites in workout styles. I used to really hate floor cardio. It has grown on me though. Some I like much better than others and I have got where I do not mind it as much. Maybe it was more the old style of floor cardio that I hated.

Lynda, I do well with those walking soldier planks most of the time. A lot of the plank stuff and my ability is not so much strength as it is whether my knee wants to give out or my shoulder starts hurting. Then I am trying to modify.

Good to know I'm not the only one with trouble with tricep push ups! I will try the hand position change and see if it helps. when I do regular push ups, I need to put my hands very wide apart too. in yoga, she used to have us lean forward a lot to do down dogs etc, and that got the triceps but it was pushing in a different direction and I was ok with those. I agree on the kickback planks. I get unbalanced too, and wider feet helps a lot. I don't do soldier ones often. I fall over too. same thing though, if you let your butt peak up higher, it's not as unbalanced.

we have 2 easy curl bars, one bent more than the other. the angles are better for my hands. I always have trouble keeping dumbbells level. Just the way my hands, forearms and shoulders are hooked up. the outer side of the dumbbells is always higher than the inner sides. my yoga instructor had a name for it, because it came into play with some yoga positions too.

I'm Ok with floor cardio unless it involves fancy footwork. even extremely simple step confuses me, more so when I'm stepping up/down on a step. the more out of breath I get, the less I can follow..... so I just avoid all step.

Judy chino is so darn cute!

A doggie question... since almost everyone here has a dog. my sister's dog is starting to nip people. she is a shy, not well socialized dog, and is 6-7 yo. she has nipped two people recently, unprovoked. she is a good sized shepherd so this could be a big issue. my sister did not train her so the dog does what she wants. I made her buy a book on dog training but she didn't do anything with it. the dog also got into the kitchen garbage and ate some raw chicken, bones and all. I only had one dog and trained him well, went to obedience class. he listened well and would never have done either of these things. is this a training issue? personality?

Valerie, I think may have something off in my arms because wide pushups feel so much better. I never feel like my arms are lined up straight under me. Amy Ross had some different push up on Drop Set strength where you moved your arms out further and further in front of you when you did push ups. The arms were in close to the body. It wasn't to bad on the set on the knees but got more difficult in plank position.
I wonder why the dog started nipping people. I am guessing it did not do this before? I really do no know. My daughter had a Chow that the children suddenly kept saying she bit them. My daughter did not see it and no marks so thought they were just saying that because they were playing and she accidentally caught them with her teeth. But, after several incidences with one grandson in particularly, she saw the dog bite and that time left blood. We were all together sitting around a campfire and the dog just went up to him, unprovoked and bit him. She had their dog put down. At the time all of the grandchildren were pretty small and sue did not want to take a chance. She has put all of her dogs through obedience training. That being said, her dogs still get into the trash. My dog does not. She will walk by and sniff but that is it. I used videos and books to train myself. So it was probably not perfect. I think it depends on how much time you spend with the dog. Our niece had a dachshund that we took care of once. That dog bit me when I tried to sit it's food in front of it. It was always nipping people. I hated when it got in my face when we would visit. Finally after their son came along and got bit they got rid of the dog. Hopefully someone else can give some insight into how to undo that.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was SB Advanced Cardio Barre Fire, 40m and at lunch was a Cathe Weight and Barre workout I created from my downloads that combined circuits of upper, lower then barre. Several of them are now Cathe fans and want to buy her dvd's. I suggested they try out the Live workouts and showed them the site.

Deb...I never clicked with Turbo Barre so I know what you mean about dread factor. I did not fall in love with Barre until Suzanne Bowen. Love her style. I may start to look for a 30 pound weighted bar after I try out the 20lb. I am hoping the weighted bar will be easier to maneuver than a barbell. I could be wrong so we'll see how the 20lb goes. I stay away from dips on the step. Bothers my left shoulder way to much. I modify by doing a move from SB. Butt on the floor, knees bent, arms with bent elbows behind you. Then you bend elbows up an down while keeping butt on floor. I really feel my tris doing this modification and it is a lot more gentle on my shoulders. It is not as intense as dips but enough that I feel it.

Lynda...Jacob's pillow already? Those three weeks flew by! I agree with the crackle and shriek!! Soldier planks are so hard. Some days it works for me and some days not so much.

Diane Sue...what brand of rebounder do you have? Mine is a really cheap one. It served its purpose way back when. SB will be coming out with some rebounder workouts incorporated with barre so this will be interesting to see. If I love the workouts then I may invest in a better one. But will wait and see.

Valerie...I am sorry about your sisters dog. I have not had experience with that kind of behavior. I would call my vet and ask advice. I do not do step workouts at all unless they are atheltic or blasts. No fancy foot moves for me.

Judy...I think 20lb will be good for me. Like you I have a weighted vest. It is just too much strain on my shoulder to use a loaded barbell. Hoping this is a great alternative.

Hi to Caitlin and Josie!

Lori, that is cool that you the ladies are wanting to do Cathe. Live would be perfect to start. I have the Urban Rebounder. It is supposed to fold but I have only done that once. It is kind of an unsafe thing to do without two people. It is nice that the legs fold flat so I was able to transport it in the back of the Escape that I used to have. I got it as a package deal with the URX-MT workouts. It was a really good purchase. I would really like to get a Bellicon , but they are quite expensive. I think the Urban rebounder is better than some I have seen sitting in stores like Walmart. I think I did see another brand when I was looking awhile back that looked nice and was mid range compared to the Bellicon. I have got a lot of use out of my rebounder. The only thing I worry a bit about the Bellicon is that it is 10 inches from the floor and some of those workouts have you leaping off and on the rebounder. It might take a bit of practice. Bellicon doesn't have the skirt to get your toes caught in.

I did a short 35 min premix of CUB. we had a surprise call that our replacement windows were ready, and they could come in an hour, so we said yes. plus I had my semi annual dental check this morning so time got short. all went well, and nice to have clear windows again.

My sister is sort of a nitwit..... nice, well meaning, but does not do the groundwork needed. the dog has nipped two people, her daughter, and now a lady who volunteers to drive her places. she is apparently aggressive toward the mail person too. This is NOT a good situation. my sister loves the dog but never trained her at all, and before that she was a show dog, so didn't live with a family. my sister did not do ANY training, even "sit," "stay", or walking on a lead to my knowledge. If you don't train , the natural base instincts take over, and I think this is a timid dog nipping because it's scared, afraid. it doesn't sound like an aggressive, vicious dog. I bought her a dog training book when she got the dog because she never trained her previous dogs, and thought maybe she would do it, but she didn't. I think you need to train so the dog knows who is the "Alpha" dog, and that is you. and they need to know sit, stay, come, and walk on a lead reasonably without yanking. they don't need to tap dance. there are some breeds that "herd" and are more prone to nip. My dobie paid attention and if you told him "NO" he didn't do it again. mostly.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, just did stuff around here...it is so hot and humid I don't feel like doing anything. Hopefully it will cool off this weekend...

Lynda, Crush It is one of the better Live cardio workouts...nice and short and to the point! Yes, the workouts that come with the Tower are all about 30 minutes long...I think I could ease into barre work that way, plus they are much easier from what we have read. Turbo Barre Express workouts are 57 or 64 minutes long...not "express" for me ..:).

Diane Sue, what are sand weights? So frustrating when a DVD skips etc. You have to wonder what happened to it while it was "resting" in its case...if not dust. I like the Troy BB...it's the short one that Cathe uses. I agree, same as you...I used to hate floor cardio until the Ripped and ICE series came out. I like the low impact ones that Cathe has done recently. Changed my whole feeling about floor cardio.

Valerie, I think your sister's dog is reacting to not enough structured, positive attention. Obedience classes, or any activity that gives the dog some socialization in a positive way may help. Also agree, there may be something physically going on and a check up would be a good idea. Good that the windows came early!

Lori, thanks for the updated spreadsheet! This most recent Live looks good....Muscle Max! That is great that you have the Lunch Ladies now interested in Cathe workouts! Do they have equipment at home to use? A good thing is that a lot of the Live workouts only require a few DB's. The weighted bar is definitely easier to move and put on your shoulders for squats etc...that with a weighted vest is perfect.

Hi to Josie, Judy & Caitlin,

Shopping for, and making the dog food today, the workers are still here....I hope they finish today...

Take care,

Deb, I think the older floor cardio workouts had way to much Dancy, skipping, and hopping around the room with spins and turns. I dreaded it. I love Cathe's newer floor cardio workouts. My knees seem to like them a lot too :)

Today I plan on doing Pyramid Lower Body. I may call the vet for Gertie. Her GI issues returned. Just when I was feeling so pleased. I see nothing in this food that I would think caused a problem. I have had a couple sleepless nights because she wakes me needing to go out (most of their time) I gave her a cup of white rice and a bit of pureed chicken last night. No problems overnight. She had 24 hours of no food. This morning I doubled her helping. She did not want to eat the dog food anyway. No blood in her stools but foul and watery. Sorry if tmo. This is getting frustrating.

Valerie, I think Gertie knows the tone of my voice ease she will stop most times when I say no. It is sort of sad for her that a get annoyed with Flies when they are in the house. I think I made the mistake of telling Gertie she should get those flies while I was smacking at one with the fly swatter. Now she takes off to sit by my husband as soon as I pick up the fly swatter. I keep trying to let her know it is not directed at her. My husband keeps teasing me and saying poor Gertie you must have beat her with the fly swatter or something.

Diane Sue, sorry Gertie is having stomach issues again. I used to do the chicken/rice mix until I read that sometimes grains are hard to digest, so I switched to ground turkey (boiled) and pumpkin. I recently had Kylee on this mix for 3 days and it helped her.

Deb, I had read that about pumpkin. I am going to go out to Pets Mart and the grocery store and pick up some pumpkin.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live ICE Total Body Compound (43 min.).

Valerie, I had a shepherd mix male who was not neutered and already a couple years old (my vet friend sent him all the way from Minnesota to Vermont when her sister decided she did not want to keep him). He was my first dog out of grad school and my first year teaching. He was an alpha male and would attract attacks from other dogs even when I would just be out walking him on a leash. It was CRAZY! He was an occasional nipper (he never broke skin, but he would go for the inner thigh on men, which probably scared the hell out of some of my colleagues when he was in my office with me) and I think it was because he was my protector. He never nipped Kim, but when we first started dating, he chewed up his clothing when he had a chance. Paddy eventually accepted Kim as the alpha male thank heavens. When someone came to the door, he inevitably would want to be the first greeter to check the person before I let them in. I definitely felt fearless with him as a companion in NYC, but he was a DIFFICULT dog and I loved him and kept him for 12 years before he died of a massive stroke. Just a guess, but I think your sister would need to establish herself as the alpha owner somehow, and I admit, I never could with Paddy--he felt like he owned me I believe. He was equally protective of my sons. The vet told me it was really too late to have him neutered, but in retrospect, I wonder if that would have made a difference.

Deb, I think the lights are working. No decapitated chickens for a few days now. I actually think Turbo Barre is a lot easier than some other barre I have done--Cardio Barre and Tracy Mallett are pretty intense by comparison. On Turbo Barre, you could just do 30 minutes and ff to the cool down and stretch. Or, maybe barre just isn't for you. If there is a major dread factor for me, I just forgive myself these days and say, who cares? I will do something else. SB is good, but her dvds are also pretty long if you do the whole thing.

Lori, yes, 3 weeks have gone by too quickly. I hate to see summer go by. I am trying to wear all of my sundresses and maybe throw a few out (to make room for new ones next year!) if I no longer enjoy them. Thanks for the new spread sheet! So useful for getting out the right equipment. That's a good idea for your ladies--try out Cathe for a month (although if they have streaming issues it might just be frustrating) and see if they are happy with her as a trainer.

Diane Sue, poor Gertie! I wonder what is ailing her. My mother was the same way with the flyswatter and scared our dog, who would hide under the bed when she got going.

Hi to Judy, Josie, and Caitlin!

Today I started with Kettlenetics Cardio Balance, stopping at 25 minutes with the windmills and completed the windmills and floor/core work after Pyramid Lower Body. Kettlenetics total time is 47 minutes, calories burned 241 calories and Pyramid Lower was 53 minutes, 250 calories. Total time 1 hr 40 minutes, 491 calories.
Lower Body Pyramid weights
12,10,8,10,12 reps
Leg Press 35# bar;20# pair dumbbells; 25# pair dumbbells; 20's; 35# bar (I do not like trying to balance a barbell when it is heavy on leg press)
static lunge 40, 50, 60, 50, 40 (I can't believe 6 years ago I did this with 60,70,80# 6 years ago before surgery)
Squat/plie squat 45,50,7o,50,45
Deadlift 45, 55,70,55, 45
calf raises body weight (I used to use dumbbells for this)
Floor work I added 3# ankle weights on the outer thigh raises with the stability ball.
Kettlenetics they use an 8# kettlebell. The smallest I have is 10 so that is what I used
Floor/core work was 2 sets of push up row alternating arms, half Turkish get up, Russian Twist feet off the floor
2 sets side plank drops with the kettlebell moving from floor to overhead (this does keep one knee on the floor, pullover leg drop both
I hope my descriptions are understandable. I always liked this workout. No jumping around the room. Usually I get a better calorie burn from it, but I did split it. I was afraid I would burn out before I started the Pyramid workout.

Lynda, that is great that the lights seem to be working for your chickens. I am hopeful that we can get this cleared up with Gertie. Even if I do I am wondering if there is some issue with her digestive system that needs to be addressed. I was talking to one of the ladies at the Pet Smart vet desk and she asked if she got stressed. I really don't feel that that is it, but I did change her food abruptly when the other was not working and then we took her to the Cabin with us. That is when the first incident happened the last night and once we got home it settled for a few days. The girl told me to go get a digital thermometer at Walmart of something because even if they had them in stock PetSmart would be over priced. There is prescription food for GI issues. She mentioned that a lot of the dogs they see that use that have a huge improvement. I will call the vet Monday if it keeps up.

Deb, I gave Gertie some chicken and pumpkin when I came home from the store with some probiotic and an medicine to help this from Pet Smart. Do you have any idea how much chicken and pumpkin I should give normally per day. I need to search some homemade dog food sites. If I have to I will keep it up for awhile and get some vitamin supplements. Castor and Pollux has a pumpkin supplement in a can that has cinnamon, bananas, and some other fruit in it. I was not sure if the fruits were a good idea. You sure have to read labels because I looked at a probiotic chewable from GNC and it started ingredients with sugar and corn syrup :0 I think my Wild diet book might have some guidelines for raw food diet. I picked up a bunch of chicken today at Sprouts as they were having a 72 hour sale today and a lot of great deals.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the comments on the photo! I was lucky to get that one.

This morning I did Cathe Live Muscle Max (8/4). That was such a good workout. I like it even better than the original
Muscle Max. It was an hour long, including some ab/core work at the end.

Tomorrow we are going to look at a few more houses.

Deb-yes, it's exciting and fun to look at new homes. There are so many out there and we aren't even sure of the location we want to go to. We could stay in the Plymouth area but I think Chris is leaning more towards Oakland County, about 20 miles from where we currently are.

Lynda-that's funny about Leslie Sansone :) I can see how she might be a little annoying. Yes, it seems like a good time to buy a home now. The rates are very low.

Lori-I really like the body bar. I do think it's a great alternative to a barbell. Thanks so much for updating the Cathe Live list! That is awesome!

Diane Sue-I'm sorry about Gertie :( I hope the pumpkin and probiotics help. I agree about reading labels. Sugar and corn syrup is in so many things. I'm surprised GNC would put corn syrup in their probiotic. They should know better.

Valerie-That is too bad about your sister's dog. I'm not sure what to suggest. I love dogs, but don't have much experience with them.

Hi to Josie & Caitlin!

Judy

Good evening ladies!

This morning was SB Upper and Lower Compound Target the 10 mins of Battle ropes. Both were intense. This was my only workout. Came home and needed to pack for our Cape week. We leave in the morning. We have never been this unorganized for vacation before. Been so busy at work then our company over this weekend we never did any packing whatsoever!

Today I signed on to Live so the ladies could see some of the workouts. They loved seeing every day woman working out. They all have weights at home so they can easily sign on. I am excited for them.

Diane Sue...I think I have that rebounder workout with Keli Roberts. I have been on amazon looking at different rebounders and wow yes very expensive! Need to start saving my amazon points for one. That Ketlenetics workout sounds great. Oh poor Gertie with the fly swatter! :(. Hope she is feeling better soon.

Valerie...new windows are nice!!! I agree wirh Deb. That dog needs structure and socialization.

Deb...I can't wait for the weighted bar to arrive. I plan to use it with my weighted vest and think this combination will work well. That is exactly why I recommend Live since the heaviest she uses is 15lbs.

Lynda... Paddy sounds like he was very protective of you. Funny he never nipped at Kim but ate his clothes!

Judy..I should try out the Live Muscle Max. Everyone seems to rave about it.

Hi to Josie and Caitlin!

We did a serious hike today, probably 8 miles RT and about 3500 ft gain and of course, loss. 6 hrs 40 min. it was hotter than the forecast and the bugs were bad. I thought I was having heat stroke at one point, and that was on the way down! I do not do heat well, as I don't sweat much and get hotter and hotter. get way over heated. still it was beautiful but we are going to skip hiking for a few weeks until it cools down and the bugs are gone. there are usually a few weeks in summer that are not good IMO. some folks like it, but I do better when it's 40 degrees rather than 85.

I always feel a little presumptuous about dog behavior, having had ONLY one dog. it just seems to me that if the dog has not been trained, she doesn't know what to do in unusual situations. this is a nervous female dog who has not been socialized well. I really thought sister would do the minimal and teach her to heel, sit, stay. basic things where you know you have the dog's attention. I didn't think she'd be teaching it to balance balls on it's nose. but come when called? would think you would do that. I think she was spayed only a year or so ago. not sure if this is a factor. the people she nipped were my sisters daughter, and the woman who provides her rides. not people she needs to offend or have scared to visit. and she's pushed screens out of the window when the mail person delivers. she can't drive so an obedience class is not possible, which is why I bought her the book. silly me, thinking she would read it and follow thru. Oh my, men might be nervous about a dog nailing them on inner thigh!! I thought most dogs had surgery at about 1 year, both male and female, unless you have plans for puppies.
so funny to hear about all the dog food needs. our guy would eat everything, happily. we fed him standard Science diet kibble and odds and ends we shared. he liked raw vegetables a lot. he loved broccoli and would go "pick" a huge leaf off a plant and eat the stalk holding it in his paws. he was such a sweetheart.

Seems like a good time to guy a house/ bigger condo, whatever works. interest is low and values are almost sure to go up.

Good morning & Happy Weekend!

The workers are still here, will be back today. They are hoping to only need another half of a day to finish. I shopped for food and cooked the dog's food yesterday, and mostly puttering around here.

Diane Sue, agree on the older cardio workouts...all that dancing, jumping etc. I am glad that HIIT was brought out and really like the low impact HIIT workouts for cardio. Poor Gertie, does she think you are chasing her with the fly swatter? She probably is just scared because she knows you are frustrated and acting differently. Maybe she ate something at the cabin that did not agree with her? I hope that is not it. What was the medicine from Pet Smart? I would probably just do the chicken and pumpkin, and nothing else for a couple of days, no meds, (unless there is one she cannot miss etc) no probiotics, no treats. Let her intestines rest for a bit. Here is the probiotic I have been using for years:
https://naturesfarmacy.com/canine/probiotic-max-and-digestive-enhancer/dogzymes-probiotic-max.html

Lynda, good that the lights are working! A win-win...as they say, no decapitated chickens and no dead owls. It sounds like what you said, your dog was trying to protect you. Our first fox terrier was kind of like your first dog...he never nipped or bit anyone, but did growl and let them know not to touch him if you came from behind, he would whip his head around and growl. He was 11 months old when we got him, not housebroken, had been in the SPCA twice, and with 2 other families. I guess no one wanted to deal with him. We kept him for 11 years and he turned out to be a wonderful dog. All he needed was some stability and positive attention. We always credit him for us falling in love with the breed. I want to give barre a chance...I took ballet when I was young, and again in my early 30's and used to love it. I don't understand why I can't do barre.

Judy, what big city is in Oakland county? Anywhere near Ann Arbor? Thanks for the info on the Live Muscle Max...I want to do that one soon.

Lori, that is great that you were able to show the Ladies the Live workouts, so they can get an idea of what they are like. I hope they have an easy time with the tech part! Have a safe and fun trip! :).

Valerie, a good idea to stop hiking for a bit....it sounds like you do not handle heat well, and that could be dangerous....and the bugs ugh!

Caitlin, how is the move coming along?

Hi to Josie!

Agility class this morning.

Take care,
