Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/5

Diane sue thanks for the tracker names. I looked at REI and a lot of things have music, gps, waterproof, sync to your phone etc for people training for triathalons. I didn't realize there was so much new technology out there but it's more than I need or want. rechargeable would be good too. an accurate HRM and a calorie burn feature would be useful for me. back to REI to look a bit. I record my activity on a paper wall calendar. good enough and easy.

Deb, I know what you mean with being afraid you will push a button and set something off. Everything I have done I bookmarked and printed and went step by step. I also researched a lot to make sure it was a good source. I downloaded a Malwarebytes to my computer once and the link someone gave said that name and the .com . It fixed a problem and then a few days later I got a virus and had to take it in to the shop. That was it. It ended up costing me more than if I would have taken it in and had them fix my problem. Then I had to fuss with Pay Pal over it and never got a refund. I made dog treats with bananas before and Mudd loved them but, I learned homemade can get moldy if just stored in my dogs cookie jar for very long. I have seen recipes using baby food meats which looked pretty easy. I think that was on Penterist.

Judy, that was a nice long Spinerval workout. I really like the Muscle Meltdown Giant sets. I want the other workouts just so that I can have all of them since I just have back and biceps right now. The 4 sets muscle meltdowns pre-mix option is a good one too. The heavy bags are a lot of fun. I have to pad up my hands well because it can be hard on the arthritis in my hands. I have a free standing stand with the speed bag option (I didn't attach it) and the heavy bag. I replaced the heavy bag with a 100# one a couple of years ago. I like it so much better because it doesn't come back at me like the lighter one when I do sprawls and come back up.

Valerie, another thing on the devices is whether or not you have to wear a chest strap. My Polar HR7 requires a chest strap. I couldn't imagine wearing a strap for long rides and hikes. It seems like it would be miserable.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was SB Barre Fire 3 and a band workout from youtube at lunch.

Judy...great ride! I know what you mean about your weight shifting. Once Bob starts working on Monday we are going on a serious menu make over. These past few months have not been good for me. I am the same weight give or take a couple of pounds but we have been eating a lot of crap. And this needs to stop.

Lynda...the pain starts a few minutes into the run. At first very dull then intensifies. I did not wait long before I stopped. The puppies sound adorable. I have a friend that has a male lab that she breeds. She has 2 litters that just started and they will be ready in September. Her dog is the stud so she gets the pick of the litters and she is offering one to us. Oh what to do! We are torn. At least we have time to think about it.

Valerie....my legs are the same! So hard to lose weight in my thighs. Barre and running do the trick for me. Since running is now out of the picture I continue on with Barre. I was thinking the same thing that Lynda said about your hike. I do not think I would have enjoyed that one.

Deb...loading and unloading the truck must be a workout! I do Cathe's Barre when she has it in her Live workouts and it is good but really prefer SB over Cathe for Barre. I'll ask around what other people are watching. Everyone at work are always talking about one show or another. Wayward Pines has a 2nd season which I did not know so will need to catch up on that one.

Diane Sue....what only one workout? What's up with that!!! Lol!!! You deserve a break. I love the muscle melt downs. Took me forever before I got to them but they make great add ons.

Today is my little Nilla's sweet 16th bday. I put a bow on her head and we made her a little steak. She loved the steak but was not to happy with the bow. I'll post a couple of pictures I put on FB.

Hi to Josie and Caitlin!

OK...Nilla overload here...Took these this morning while getting ready for work. I couldn't resist!

Diane Sue, I have an impending tear of my left miniscus, but when I heard that, I brought a very sturdy McDavid knee brace that I wear for all leg workouts and all cardio. I need to ice after almost every cardio workout, and it helps. Today everything was Low Impact, as I did the 48 minute premix of Low Impact Circuit, and there was no jumping. You can even get hinged McDavid knee braces, and you probably need a size small the way I do. These brace have allowed me to jump, rum, and do high impact. My kids are so immature that I feel as if I will never be a grandmother. I don't even know what my body fat is now, and I have had people tell me I am too skinny, and I don't think I have much. I can't use my calipers on myself. I found a pair of calipers where you only measure two sites, and when I looked at the totals for over fifty, my body fat is much less than 16 percent.

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did a 1 hour spinerval and the SB Challenge Upper Body & Core workout.

Valerie-I have a Garmin Vivosmart with wrist based hrm. I got mine at REI. It seems to work pretty well. The heart rate isn't quite as accurate as using a chest strap but it is close. You can record workouts as running, cardio or other. The workouts can be uploaded to Garmin Connect and I think you can set it up to transfer them automatically to Myfitnesspal, though I haven't done that yet.

Diane-you will love the other muscle meltdowns. I think I am starting to get arthritis in my hands too. I bought a pair of compression gloves and have been using them when I work out.

Lori-Chris and I are working on our diets too. The last few months haven't been great in that area for us either.
I think it would be great if you got a Lab puppy. Like you said, you'll have time to think about it before you decide.
Nilla is just adorable!

Caitlin-I've seen those McDavid knee braces. They look very supportive.

Hi to Deb, Lynda & Josie,

Judy

Lori, I love the pictures. Nilla makes such an adorable present :) I love the pictures. Lab puppies are so cute, how old will they be in September? Yes, only one workout!! I had to work to get that 34 minutes in with a phone call and a couple of interruptions. I really wanted to do some other work for the hip area. I think sometimes working an area more often helps keep the area leaner rather than bulky. Much like freestyle training where they work lower body 4-6 days a week. I think the meaning of freestyle has changed somewhat in recent years to mean different things.

Caitlin, I have some Freeze Wraps that I bought after surgery for 80 dollars that have been nice and they came with three gel inserts so I have extra cold. I wear a knee support when I workout a lot of the time. It is not a brace though. I will have to check those out. I think quite a bit of the pain I still come up with is the arthritis that is in there. Surgery probably just added to more arthritis. The only calipers I can use on myself is the digital one that I have. I take a reading upper, middle, lower then it calculates. If I use that method I take the reading several times and take the best average of all of the readings. I bought a more complex one with a booklet with a lot of information but, there is no way I can do all of those readings and be able to see it. I cannot take a reading on my back. It just won't work. It was a waste of money and I am not asking my husband or family to do it.

Judy, thanks for sharing Josie's pictures. It looks like party time :) Pretty festive in the midst of the rides.

Good morning,

Yesterday we took the dogs for a walk in the park, and the unloading of the truck and setting up the equipment will be my workouts.

Judy, great rides! I may try the week of streaming, once we get beyond this agility trial. If you decide you want to try to make your cat's food, you have to remember that homemade food is great for knowing the ingredients, etc, but you also have to find a good way to supplement for vitamins and minerals, which are not included in the food. Without those, it is actually worse than using commercial foods. I use the recipes in Real Food for Healthy Dogs & Cats. They seem complicated at first, but once you get the process down, it's pretty simple.

Valerie, the FitBits do record your calorie burn, if you get the model that does it. They also record steps, and even sleep patterns! It tells you how many time you woke up and the sleep times. I think John has the HR one. I don't think he has to synch it to anything just to get the numbers from it for steps and calorie burn. It was about $159.

Lynda, are you using the high or low quality versions of the Live workouts? Once I switched to low quality, all the freezing etc stopped. (keeping my fingers crossed that I didn't jinx this by saying it!). Penny & Libby sound so cute!

Diane Sue, I have a cheap body fat measurement tools....it's just a plastic type caliper..I am too embarrassed to say what my measurement is! Maybe the stats you entered in your Polar are off? Yes, I got the treat recipe from Pinterest. I should refrigerate them...I wanted to keep them crispy so put in a paper bag, but you are right, they should be refrigerated.

Lori, get the puppy! It would have been good if you got it while Bob was still home though. Is there a way he or you could get home in the middle of the day to let it out etc? I checked out Bates Motel on Prime, not free. :(. I will see if the library has the DVD's to loan. Nilla looks so cute....."Sweet 16"!

Caitlin, that is a great body fat percentage! Why do people comment on weight when someone is thin? They would never tell someone, "you're too fat"..would they?

As for workouts, I will start back again after this weekend...running and working the trial means long days and Sunday with the tear down and loading, and unloading the truck, that will be enough for me.

Take care,

I could not believe how many electronic fitness devices there are now!. way more info than I need or want. Judy
REI is a good place to buy from... you would not have trouble returning if it doesn't work properly. I will look at the Garmin too. I seem to do best with "simple". Calorie burn seems to be the hardest thing to calculate accurately. easy to record distance and speed, but calorie burn will vary between individuals. my first thought when I saw the number on MFP was " this can't be right". would be nice if it was correct but I immediately didn't trust it. I think these numbers are all going to be "ballpark".
I would be cautious about commenting on anyone's weight regardless of high or low unless they ask for your input... wow, talk about a potential minefield. My friend that was just visiting here.. I would like to talk to her about fitness because she looks like she is losing a lot of muscle mass, but I'm not sure how to bring it up. she is thinner than she used to be but no muscle!
Lori... Nilla is just adorable. a puppy is quite the undertaking though.
Judy thanks for posing Josie's pics. the ride looks lovely. Love the rows and rows of identical tents.
Deb, my cousin has a fitbit but I don't think it records anything when he rides his bike. I was trying to sort out the devices and focus on the biking aspect but it didn't work very well. I don't want to get into the $500-600 range.
I'm going to try and post a picture from the hike.. I've been able to send pics to friends so I'll again try to send it to myself and see if I can get it to work this time. don't want to be defeated by technology again, as it didn't work when I tried it before.

I really love those photos. I am so angry at Colin it is crazy. He cancelled his date with me at the last minute. He said he was sorry at least ten times but I am still angry at him. I guess it is not reasonable, because I never told him I was moving. Now I get to do more cardio right now. I am also doing my legs. I don't want to do Lower Body Blast because I am afraid of the segment that involves jumping on and off an eight inch step.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Live High Energy Kickboxing (48 min.). Fun!

Lori, Nilla is gorgeous with that bow. It's great that you have some time to consider whether to get a new pup. What does Bob think?

Diane Sue and Judy, I have never done the Muscle Meltdowns. Duh--I can't even remember what dvds they are on. Remind me please. With Cathe Live I don't seem to do much planning of my workouts. I don't count calories, I don't monitor my heart rate, I don't count steps, I don't know my body fat percentage. I am a fitness slouch! I did get one of my cases of wine today though and could lift it easily into the foyer. That has to count for something. Now I am waiting for my Gewürztraminer and Rose.

Judy, great pics of Josie having fun. Quite an army of tents there. I wonder how far along she is.

Valerie, I don't comment on people's weight either. It's just asking for trouble. On my first flight going out to CA, I was sitting on the aisle, which I prefer, another woman was sitting at the window, and this was SW, so the final passengers basically choose what is left of the middle seats. The woman who took the middle seat was morbidly obese and flowed over the sides of her seat crowding me on one side, but at least I had the aisle to lean into. They had to get a special seat belt for her and you could tell that the flight attendants were not happy, but I felt a bit bad for her because she was profusely apologetic and embarrassed. On my last flight back I noticed that the woman ahead of me must have bought two seats because we were told that the flight was full, but she had only one seat mate. People are getting bigger and seats are getting smaller.

Deb, I think I tried the lower quality Live once. It seems a bit blurrier to me? You will get plenty of exercise with those trials.

Caitlin, who is Colin? I thought you were seeing someone named Frank (?). A torn meniscus? My husband had two partially torn menisci and had them repaired and was back in action pretty quickly. I think it's one of the easier surgeries in terms of recovery time. No PT, just a cane for a couple weeks.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Good evening ladies,

This morning I subbed in SB Lower Body Sculpting Circuit followed up with Avd Foldover target. Ended up being about 45 minutes and my only workout. Tomorrow I would like to try Cathe's most recent Live from Thursday. Looks like the blasts are not crazy and easily modified if need be.

Glad you all liked Nilla. She really is like having a little baby. The lab puppies would be ready some time late September so thinking they will be about 9 to 10 weeks maybe. It will be a huge commitment and not sure I am ready for this. My husband is and really wants one. I loved Chester and he left a huge hole in our hearts but at the same time I am liking knowing we can take off for the weekend and not worry about any animals. I have several friends that will take Nilla or depending where we go I may be able to take her too. :). We are more restricted with a larger dog.

Caitlin...that tear sounds painful. I am going to look into that knee brace. When is the actual move? Hope it goes smoothly. I hate moving but hope the next time we move it is to Florida to retire. Then it won't be so bad.

Deb...my husband and I both had fitbits that recorded steps only. They were about 100 dollars each and we loved them. Was very disapointed when they both stopped working in less than a year. More like 6 months actually. After this we want nothing to do with FitBits of any kind. I am loving my Apple Watch though. Knowing us we will end up with the puppy. We will melt as soon as we see it. Damm it!!!!! :)

Valerie...I have the Polar H7 I think. Bluetooth and utilizes a Chest Strap. I do not mind the chest strap. I really do not feel it at all. I agree there are so many electronic devices now. It can be overwhelming. Next time I do a cardio workout going to compare the reads from Polar and Apple Watch. Curious to see if there is a huge difference.

Lynda...that poor woman on the plane that must be so hard. I totally agree that people are bigger and the seats are smaller to make as much money as they can. I recently did the muscle meltdowns so do not feel bad. I had commented a couple of times that I had yet to do them. Do not know why it took me so long. I do not like the lower quality Live either. They look really fuzzy to me too.

Judy...thank you so much for posting Josie's pictures for us to see. We really need to overhaul our diets. I have always been a decent well balanced eater but not lately at all!

Diane Sue.... Had to tease you about your one workout! I am going to look into those freeze wraps too. They sound amazing. I am starting to experiment with essential oils and noticed an interesting recipe for knee pain. Going to try it out and see what happens.

No plans for the weekend other than my sons GF's parents coming over Saturday evening. Chelsie (GF) is coming over Sunday evening and will be watching GOT with me and spending the night. Should be a fun time. I have Monday off because the dishwasher is going to be installed (fingers crossed!).

Have a great night all!

Mountain biking for 2.5 hours this morning. I forgot to check mileage. we got off on an old trail and the grass, nettles, horsetail were > 6 feet high.... and wet. we thought we could push through it, but gave up deciding there was no point. a good test of the new jacket, which performed well. I fell off once because I could not see a big slump due to vegetation. soft wet landing!

how embarrassing to need a seat belt extender! but if you need two seats, it's time to take a look at how you live your life. air line seats are, however, getting to be a joke. people are bigger in general and the companies respond by shrinking the width a... no room for knees at all if you're tall. not enough bulkhead seats to go around. and it's hell on the people on either side. I've been there too.

another meal idea.... some grilled /deli chicken. put a slice of pepper jack cheese on a ww tortilla, a few slices of peach or nectarine, and some chicken. fold over and pin with a toothpick and heat until warm/melty. Yummy. and simple. you can make a dipping sauce with low fat sour cream, a teaspoon of lime juice and tsp of honey. yummy and not too caloric. we had this with cucumber, tomato and avocado salad.

I ended up being rushed again. Today I did 21 Day Fix Extreme Cardio, 33 minutes, 249 calories. I then did 21 Day Fix Extreme Hardcore abs, 11 min. 51 calories. I finished with Ice Core 2, 13 min. 50 calories. Total time was 57 minutes and calories burned 350 calories. I have my grandson here detailing one of our cars.

Deb, I thought the crisp dog treats would be more enjoyable but after the mold I had to rethink it. I generally don't feed the dogs a lot like we would eat cookies. I freeze our people cookies :) So I guess the same would go with the dog treats if they are not consumed in a couple of days. It is good to make them. I really have to read those labels on packaged dog treats. I have found a couple of good ones at Sprouts Farmers Market. I was surprised when I saw some of those chewy treats had sugar alcohols in them. I could only how much stomach distress that could cause if the dog ate very many of them. I recently changed the batteries in my Polar watch and transmitter and it seems to be working better than it was. I periodically update it and do the VO2 max and own zone. When I do the VO2 max I try to make sure I remember to have no caffeine in about 24 hours and best time is first thing in the morning. I do body fat the same way, first thing and no food or beverages to alter the test.

Valerie, I have to keep to myself sometimes with family and friends on fitness unless they ask. I did have to tease my daughter last night though because she came after going to the gym to her son's t ball game with a diet drink and skittles and no dinner. She said she had jerky for lunch. She know better. She has issues with blood sugar and dizzy spells so there are times when she will eat anything. Then everyone thinks I am a bit obsessive about my healthy food and workouts. They tease but then will ask questions or for help. That meal idea sounds really good. The little bit of sweet with pepper jack cheese would be yummy. I made a pot of Julie Bauer Cookbook, Jalapeno Popper Chicken Chili yesterday and ended up having some for lunch and dinner. It was pretty yummy. I would not have thought to use ground chicken and ground beef together. There was a diced sweet potato in it and plenty of jalapeno pepper. I put on some organic sour cream and instead of the optional goat cheese I used a bit of organic grass fed cheddar.

Lynda, I only have two of the muscle meltdowns. Biceps is on Boot camp Circuit and Back is on Ice Sweat. I think that triceps is on Kickboxing one. I cannot think of the title but I have it in my wish list. That is so sad for the woman on the plane to be apologizing. I think it is really hard for some people to change their eating habits. I blame a lot though on food additives. I think there are way more obese people than there used to be. They have turned so many packaged food into stuff that is not all real food.

Caitlin, I, too, am confused. You mentioned Frank and the air conditioner and now Colin and a date? I checked those braces out. They are pretty decent on the prices. I wear the Rehband compression sleeves right now.

Lorie, I have been using essential oils for quite awhile. I would be interested what you would use for your knees. I do know what you mean about larger dogs and trying to go somewhere. I had to try to get family to watch Gertie and Mudd if we went anywhere for a couple of days. I had to drive the 100 miles to Oklahoma City and back to where we were living before we moved just to go on a vacation. This summer we are going on a family Cabin vacation and Gertie and my daughter's dog muffin are going to have to go because there is no family left to dog sit. My daughter with all of the animals is having her husbands parents stay at there house and take care of things. It does sometimes alter our decisions on both of us leaving for an extended amount of time. But I love Gertie and do enjoy the dogs. My husband always insists on larger dogs and I realize a small one would be easier to have someone else care for. I'll see if I can find a link to the Freeze wraps. I found them when I was doing research for the torn meniscus.

Good morning ladies, I woke up at 4:00 AM this morning and could not go back to sleep. Wide awake! So decided to get up at 4:30. Ugh.Going to be a long day!

We have tons of errands to do today and I talked my husband into going for Pedi's. We were going to go a couple weeks ago but he chickened out but now he says he will so we will see.

Diane Sue...I bought a book on Amazon that is great for someone just starting out with essential oils. The knee pain one is...4 ounces of a carrier oil, 24 drops each of pepperment and eucalyptus oils. Sounds very basic but going to try it. I ordered the oils on Amazon. If you have a favorite place to order let me know. Oh so much to learn but I am enjoying reading about all the oils. Love what RoseHip is doing for my skin. Been using for a few months now at night after my Retin A. It's good you can take Gertie with you. Later this year we plan to visit Bob's parents in Floride and I am planning to take little Nilla with us. After the last time we boarded her I swore I will not do this to her again. She had a hard time.

Valerie...wow that is pretty scary falling off. Good thing you had a soft landing, Can't imaging trying to push through that mess. That recipe sounds really tempting!!! Thank you for sharing. My husband will love this.

Have a great day all!! Still planning Cathe Live Scambled Cardio & Weights this morning before we do our errands to get it done and out of the way.

Good morning,

We had a great day yesterday at the trial...Kylee got her second "leg" towards one of her agility titles with a 2nd place and got her Novice Agility title and 1st place in her category! I was really happy, she was such a good girl. I will post some pics here later.

Valerie, yes post a pic from the hike! Wow, falling off your bike and not injured, that is lucky. That chicken wrap sounds delicious! there are various versions of the FitBit....John's does measure heart rate and calorie burn, along with steps, and sleep etc. I got it at Best Buy, I think I mentioned it was around $159. He had an issue with the first one, and Best Buy just gave him a new one. Then the strap on his second one started to wear off....he got on line with FitBit and they sent him a new one. The customer service is pretty good if something goes wrong with it. This is the one he has:
https://www.fitbit.com/chargehr

Caitlin, I agree with your feelings about the step...my days of jumping on and off are done too. :).

Lynda, hey, lifting cases of wine is sign of good physical fitness! They should put that along with the "getting up off the floor" test. LOL I flew to a client meeting with a colleague once and she had to ask for the extended seat belt....I felt so sorry for her. The flight attendants are really nice about that though, very discreet etc. The lower quality Live is ok on my TV..

Lori, are there step moves in that recent Live workout that did? Let us know if there are the high impact moves etc. I like to note this stuff on my lovely, useful PDF document. :). Yes, it is definitely harder to travel when you have dogs, but just think of those great walks, swimming, etc with a new pup, swimming. I bet FitBit would have sent you replacements...did you contact them? It's great that Nilla is small enought that you can take her on a plane in the cabin with you. That is the only way I would fly with a dog.

Diane Sue, how do you measure VO max? I don't know if my Polar even has that in the profile set up stuff. That chili sounds delicious!

Hi to Judy & Josie,

More agility today, same runs as yesterday, but now Kylee has moved up to the next level. Wish me luck!

Take care,

Really loved our big dog a.doberman. just a sweetheart. I trained him. he was smart and well behaved. He had his own pack to carry when we hiked or backpacked. we didn't get another after him, mostly because it was hard to travel. you can't hike with dogs in parks, and some places are not appropriate, too steep, too rocky etc. Kennel bills got outrageous and a lot of extra driving besides. he got spinal stenosis in his later years and had issues on rough ground. so we cried when he passed, but didn't get another. Kitties ...well, you can get an extra litter box, fill the auto feeder , and they can be alone for a few days. Just works better for us though I love dogs too.

I'm having second thoughts about a fitness monitor. I wear a watch to time hikes/rides. simple, always works. I will delay this for a trip to REI where I can see in person if I want to replace my watch with different device. I can look at BB too and of course always Amazon.

Falling occasionally is not a bad thing. most mt bike surroundings are pretty soft and if you push toward better skills, you are going to fall occasionally. I might get a bruise or two. yesterday, I was in 6 ft tall grass and lost the "trail" so I got wet but it was soft and cushy. these are not spectacular bone shattering crashes. nothing like a road bike crash where surfaces are smooth, hard, and you are going fast. always have a helmet on, gloves, boots.

Okay I sent a couple pics to myself and this time it worked. can anyone remind me how to post a pic here? Deb, I think you told me last time to use picture trail?

Too funny... yes, lifting cases of wine can be a new fitness barometer! Love it!.
