Good morning,

It has been trying to rain but not succeeding...we need it badly. Yesterday I ran the 2 dogs in Agility classes....that was my workout....still have a slight pain in my left side lower back/hip .

Lori, that is great that Bob has a new job, one that lets him have evenings and weekends free. That's too bad about the floor and the dishwasher....you made me think about how ours was installed...I think the floor was done afterward as well. I guess we will find out when we need a new one. Those SB upper body workouts seem like they are working for you and Judy. I may go over to YouTube and see what is there with her...*sighs*. so many workouts, so little time...LOL

Valerie, Thanks for the link....I added that site to "my favorites" so I can peruse later. I also read that you should pre-rinse quinoa. I think I have Bob's Red Mill quinoa...You mentioned you used to use a flat iron etc ....what do you do now? The only time I could just wash and air dry my hair was when it was really, really short. I finished season 3 of Last Tango in Halifax last night....thoroughly enjoyed it! I hope she gets season 4 out soon. Of course I will have to wait until they are on DVD and in the library, but that's ok.

Judy, thanks for posting the pic of Josie! I miss KCM....I think I will look for that back workout that was mentioned on MFP the other day. Glad you were able to get the Live streaming working again... Did you do that spin workout when it was actually LIVE...or after the filming?

Diane Sue, thanks for the link...I'll add that to "my favorites" as well. This is why we sit at the computer for too long...between boards, and perusing nutrition sites, and Pinterest...I could sit here all day...but I don't. :). I have sort of wavy, straight frizz...hate it. but will not go real short...I don't know why I torture myself...I also use just a flat iron nowadays.

Hi to Josie & Lynda,

Today we will be going to an obedience trial in Dunkirk, NY, about an hour's drive from here. Wish us luck, I hope we each walk out with a qualifying score!

Good mornng ladies!

Ate way to much yesterday, but I knew I would. :). Today's workout will be the SB Hiit from yesterday and going to hop on treadmill to see what happens.

Judy...funny you should mention seeing a difference from her workouts. I have been noticing the same thing the last couple of weeks. My arms are really looking defined. I have been doing more SB than Cathe and really surprised to see the changes. I have a solid build and even my legs (especially top of knee) are leaning out. Who would have thought lighter weights with high reps would do this for me! I still love my Cathe and never will part from her workouts but may not do as many heavy weight only workouts. Thanks for posting Josie's picture!

Deb...you called it a while ago so I guess Yes I do more SB for lower than Cathe now. for the dishwaser I think we are going to end up cutting it out with the sawzall. The floors right against it so tight we do not want to damage the wood. This will be a project for my son. I am handy but have no desire to use the sawzall like this and my husband agrees. My son on the other hand can't wait to dive in! You used to always do KCM workouts. I think Cathe Live spoiled us.

Diane Sue...I really hope the new one slides in easy after all this. That is great your husband cuts your hair! Very nice. I am the same when when I use Nyquil. Only use it if I absolutely have no choice. Yesterday's workout I burned a ton of calories doing the spin. Completely forgot how spinning is such a calorie burning. Need to get back on the seat regularly.

Valerie...thanks for the recipe. Looks great. I even think my husband would eat this one!

Drizzily today with more rain coming. We have a couple of errands to do then we plan to catch up on Bates Motel later in the afternoon.

Hi to Josie and Lynda!

Good Morning Everyone,

Deb-I did the spin workout when it was live. I was happy that the streaming worked. I'm not sure what was going on before but it seems to be good now. Good luck at the trial today!

Lori-I'm thinking the same thing about not doing as many heavy weight only workouts. I still love Cathe's weight workouts too but I'm starting to think I respond better to higher reps and lower weight. I hope your treadmill run goes well.

Here's a photo Josie just posted.

Hope everyone has a good Sunday!

Too funny...we have a sawzall too! we used it mostly on out door garden wood projects. not a "delicate instrument" but gets the job done. DH has every tool known to man but we get a lot of use out of them. much easier than renting or borrowing things all the time. we finally have EVERY tool invented.

Judy thanks for posting the pics ...Yay Josie... have a great ride.

Flatiron is so important.. that when we are camping and don't have electricity (most of the time) I have a small iron powered by butane cartridge. humidity causes weird waves as does riding and hiking..... "helmet" and/or "hat" hair .

Did ICE chiseled upper body. then therapy exercises and floor work from LBB. about an hour. not hard. had to turn off the music from CUB part way through. Yeech!. loud, screechy and awful. interestingly, when I change absolutely nothing in the settings but switch disks and put in LBB, it is low volume, need to turn up the volume to hear it at all, and Cathe's voice is the main thing I hear , with music as background. It makes me think it's not my sound system, but changes in how people want to hear things. ETA I will try to use these disks but play them without music. I can start out OK and the irritation just builds. I got thru thr warm up and probably 4 exercises and just could not stand it any more. I hate the music in this series.

Good morning,

Well we did not qualify yesterday, but I was really pleased with her performance. She anticipated the "send" on a dumbbell retrieve so that knocked us out of a qualifying score. Otherwise she did all the other exercises. Keegan was Keegan, he shut down at one point, and did not complete one of the exercises...but did all the rest. Dogs!

Lori, that's great that the SB workouts are working! I never would think that really light weights would make a change but you and many others are proof of that. I gave John a sawsall for Christmas one year and he was like a little kid with a toy. He called up his friend right away to tell him and they were all "oooing and awwwing" over it. Too funny. I know you mentioned this...but I forgot..what is Bates Motel again? TV series? ( besides a spin off of the Psych movie I mean)...

Judy, thanks again for posting Josie's pics! Glad you got the streaming to work again. I hate to jinx it by bringing it up, but mine has been fine since switching to the Low Quality video.

Valerie, LOL on having "every tool known to man"....sometimes I feel the same here...but I know there are many more that we don't have. The storage of them is the hard part. That is so strange on difference in the sound of your DVD's...

Diane Sue, I hope you are feeling better today...I went on to that site you linked on here...received an email with a bunch of downloads.. it looks like they are all free....is there a catch here? Do you have to join something at some point?

Caitlin, did you move yet? Yes, grab that AC unit before they are all gone! :)

Hi to the travelling Josie & Lynda,

Not sure what is up today....a workout and maybe working at my cousins for a few hours....

Take care,

Deb, too funny with the dogs.. can't imagine how hard it would be to keep them focused on what they're doing and not distracted by everything.

Had a good dinner last night with cousin & wife. it was 90 degrees so we grilled, and ate outside. I made a quinoa black bean salad, grilled chicken and garlic bread. vanilla ice cram and local strawberries for dessert. I will see if I can find the quinoa recipe. it's one of the first ones I ever used and is endlessly adaptable. I serve it at room temp so it is easy to make ahead. I serve the chicken next to it. it's very colorful and nutritious and not hard to make. If I can find it I will print it as it was written and put my changes at the bottom.
Savvy Vegetarian's Mexican Style Quinoa Black Bean Salad

Ingredients:

* 1 cup quinoa
* 1 1/2 cups cold water
* 1/2 tsp salt
* 2 cups cooked black beans. If using canned beans, drain and rinse well
* 1/2 cup chopped celery
* Optional: 1 carrot, peeled, halfed lengthwise, sliced thin diagonally
* Optional: 1 cup chopped fresh yellow or green beans
* 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced OR 1 Tblsp minced fresh ginger
* 2 garlic cloves, minced, OR 1 tsp garlic powder
* 1 red pepper, sliced thin
* 1 green pepper, sliced thin
* 1 tsp cumin powder
* 1 tsp coriander powder
* 2 Tblsp chopped fresh cilantro or basil
* 1/4 cup chopped scallions
* Optional: 1 large ripe tomato
* Optional: 1/2 cup sliced olives
* Dressing:
* 2 Tblsp freshly squeezed lime juice
* 1/4 cup olive oil
* 1 tsp salt
* Fresh ground pepper
* Pinch cayenne or chili powder

Directions

1. The quinoa can be made ahead of time and refridgerated
2. Soak the quinoa 1/2 hour in cold water
3. Rinse very thoroughly in water several times. For each rinse, pour off most of the water and finish draining through a large fine mesh strainer
4. Place in 2 qt pot with 1 1/2 c. water and 1/2 tsp salt
5. Bring to a boil, turn down to low, cover tightly, and cook for 15 minutes
6. Remove from heat and allow to sit 5 minutes covered
7. Fluff gently with a fork and set aside to cool.
8. Saute jalapeno, fresh garlic, in 2 Tbsp oil until garlic is browned, pepper and celery are softened
9. Add the green and red peppers and saute briefly
10. Add the cumin and coriander, cook and stir 5 minutes
11. Blend dressing ingredients with a whisk or shake in a jar
12. Gently combine sauteed veggies, tomatoes, black beans, quinoa and dressing in a large bowl
13. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Stir in cilantro and scallions, and serve warm or cover and chill for later

I skip celery, carrots and jalapeno and use one large red pepper. fresh garlic. 1 can of black beans. I sprinkle cilantro on top. ( some people don't like cilantro). I put a line of large chop tomatoes and some avocado slices on the top. I serve with assorted hot sauce to sprinkle on. I put a 1/4 tsp of chili into the dressing. I buy a bag of limes at Costco every year. squeeze them all and freeze in ice cube trays. fresh lime juice is so good!. I mix red and plain quinoa and cook together.

I've made this many times and people like this one. it's great left over too.

Hello to all,

I bought my portable AC today, so I can exercise in my living room all summer long. I was tired today so I only did my legs, squats, lunges and plie squats.

I did not move yet. I have a buyer, but the process is going to take quite a while. The buyer has to get a mortgage now. I am going to buy a car after I sell my condo and join a nice gym up there.

Today I did Plyo Fix Extreme, 31 minutes, 235 calories. I then did Pilates Fix Extreme 33 minutes, 132 calories. I finished off with Icy Core 1 11 minutes, 42 calories. Total time was 75 minutes and calories burned 409

Judy, that is nice that your streaming worked for you. Ours is always working one day and not another. We were trying to watch 13 Hours last night on Vudu and it kept buffering. My husband had went through the Roku. I told him to try it direct on the television and then it worked. Sometimes it does the opposite. It really is frustrating.

Deb, you get a lot of free stuff but all of those sites will send out e mails trying to sell. They all try to push getting a free item for joining Thrive Market. I don't think it is such a bad thing and would consider if I couldn't get the items I want from somewhere else. There is a Wild Tribe or something like that, that costs a fee to join and you get more stuff. But they all send some free stuff or you can pick stuff up off their website. I bought the green smoothie download and was annoyed when I got the Wild Diet Cookbook and it had the same recipes in it. I was hoping for new ones. It didn't cost that much though. He is also involved with the Civilized Caveman George Bryant in an app called Caveman Feast which is a recipe app. I got it when it first came out for 1.99. I think that it is more now. His book has a pie chart of how much to eat and half of the diet is to come from vegetables and about a quarter from protein a small amount of fat and then some carbs. He gives special cooking methods for beans and legumes and other foods to make them more digestible and tolerant for those that can eat them. Dairy he suggest keeping to things like greek yogurt and sour cream (things that are fermented) There is a lot of soaking and sprouting. It really doesn't take too much to soak nuts. I have made my own sauces using nuts and nut milk with this method.
I get a lot of free recipes from several different sites. I am sorry that you didn't qualify. I would think it would be difficult to keep them from getting distracted.

Lori, I need to do something that will work on my lower body. I am just not happy with it lately. Then maybe it is because I have been doing a lot more lower impact and lighter weights because of the knee. I did some of the Plyo today on my rebounder and the rest on my mats.

Valerie, that is odd about the music. I don't have all of them but had not noticed anything on Upper Body, Bootcamp, or Sweat.

Hi Everyone,

Here are some of Josie's photos from day one of her ride.

Today I did 4 DS Legs & Core, then Suzanne Bowen Total Body Beginner, 30 minutes. For 4 DS legs, I only used a 15 lb weight vest, no other weight. Total time was about 80 minutes and my garmin gave me a calorie burn of around 400 calories. Tomorrow I will be doing a longer Spinerval, I'm hoping to get close to 2 hours in.

Caitlin-that's good that you got AC. It seems like this summer is going to be a warmer one than usual.

Valerie-That recipe looks great! I'm going to print it and save it. I do notice ICE dvds having louder music than Cathe's older dvds. I like the music in 4 DS, STS & the Hardcore and Intensity Series more than the ICE music.

Deb-I think using the low quality streaming option helped me too.

Lori-The SB workout I did today, Total Beginner, was tougher than I thought it would be. I will do that one again.

Diane Sue-I've been lucky with the streaming recently but I know how frustrating it can be when it doesn't work right.

Hi to Lynda & Josie!

Judy

Judy, it's a good basic recipe with Mexican flavors. not overwhelming and very easy to sub in what you like and what you have. I'd put in the jalapeno but DH doesn't like it so I use some Chohula on mine. fresh basil is good as cilantro. I love avocado & tomato so, use as a topper. it's very colorful and looks great on a platter. another reason to REALLY rinse quinoa is sometimes you will get bits of sand. I soak it, drain it, rinse thoroughly and still occasionally get a tiny bit of grit.
I've decided I just don't like the ICE soundtrack at all. I'll use without. the "background" music is WAY louder than older disks, even when played on the same equipment without changing a single thing.
We had the air on yesterday. made sleeping possible even though still too warm.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. Maybe something today.

Valerie, thanks for the recipe...it has a lot of stuff in it! I will print it and look at some of your changes...Yes, distractions are the thing that gets Kylee...she too curious sometimes to see what is going on, or what that small white dot over there on the floor is..the one thing she kept going over to Sunday was an open doorway, where unbeknownst to me, John had taken Keegan out of to hide from us so she wouldn't see them while she was in the ring. I didn't even know they were out there, but she did! I will post the video if my friend is able to get it to me.

Caitlin, I forgot what town you are moving to...? Good that you got that AC unit before it gets really hot and there is a "run" on them. :).

Diane Sue, thanks for the info....will read more on it. Do you like barre workouts?

Judy, thanks for the pics, Is the SB Total Body Beginner available on DVD?

Hi to Lori, Josie & Lynda,

Making the dog's food today...

Take care,

Deb-I looked on SB's site and didn't see a Total Body Beginner DVD. Do you have any of her Barre Amped DVDs?

Deb, when I write a recipe I bracket the ingredients that go together. I can see at a glance what goes with what. If you bracket off dressing ingredients, it's a lot shorter. I cross out what I won't use. I used the original recipe from Cooking Light so I didn't make those changes.
I cook quinoa early in the day. the rest came together in about 30 minutes. I sauté the garlic and red pepper in a large pan. Use the pan as a giant mixing bowl, and toss all together, and then pour into a serving dish.
I usually work from paper. make notes and changes so each time is easier. I cook a lot, usually this kind of food, so I have all the tools handy and am an efficient, if messy, "master" cook. .

we did a 33 mile road ride yesterday. 2 hrs 47 min.

That is interesting both of you are finding changes with higher reps, lighter weights. What do you call "light"? 5's and 8's?

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Live Cardio and Weights (54 min.). A little too much impact for me, needed to modify, so I will give it a 3.

I really enjoyed my stay with my older son and his woman friend and their 2 schnauzer puppies. They bought a lovely new condo together in Campbell, which was about 15 min. away from the San Jose airport where I flew in and out. The weather in San Francisco for the scattering of ashes in San Francisco Bay was perfect--in the low 70s, no fog, and the water was pretty calm, although our skipper was a bit crazy on the speed. I decided to scatter them along with rose petals off of Angel Island, so skipper Ken zooms out there and my son and I take our time with the ritual, after which skipper Ken tells us we still have another hour if we want on the yacht (more like a speedboat to my mind), so we cruise around the whole island, get a close look at Sausalito and Treasure Island, and then zoom back to the pier. I am glad I had on a big waterproof jacket, but even so, a lot of water on my legs. My son and I decided skipper Ken was a hoot and we could laugh about the whole experience. After that we went into San Francisco and had a very late lunch at a sushi place that was the best sushi I think I have ever had (Akiko's).

We also did some wine tasting in Sonoma at a couple wineries and I sent some great wines back home. That was a fun experience too. A hike and a drive into the mountains another day. Good company, good food, good weather, and planes that took off and landed on time. A really enjoyable trip and a lot of laughs, too. The one thing I must say is that traffic was often terrible. I don't think we had problems with the primary events that were going on, just generally a lot of traffic wherever we went.

Deb, the schnauzer puppies were like 2 little Tasmanian devils from the cartoon--in constant motion and flying around the condo with their toys. Very much aware of where the other one is--like Kylee with Keegan. Campbell is very close to Saratoga, which looks like a very beautiful community.

Lori, great news about your husband's new job! It's great that he found something that won't interfere so much with your weekends and evenings. I am enjoying City of Mirrors but I had to read several hundred pages before it really took off. Just warning you to be patient. I am worried about Arya.

Judy, thanks for the pics of Josie! I have had problems at times with streaming too, and I just quickly reboot the Apple TV and that seems to work.

Valerie, that looks like a great recipe. Sorry about your problems with Cathe's ICE workouts and their music. I really haven't noticed, but I also seem to be doing more Live workouts than dvds.

Diane Sue, are you going to try higher weight for your lower body? Do you feel like you are losing strength with the light weights, or you don't like the shape of your legs?

Hi to Josie and Caitlin!

Catskill NY, and it is very close to Hudson. It is a very pretty area, and we have a nice place to live in. The only thing that upsets me is that Frank is angry that I bought a portable AC, and what was I supposed to do? Suffer all summer, and not be able to work out in my living room. I had no choice. Today I did Rockout, Knockout, with two pound weighted gloves and my upper body. Hi to all, and garance.
