Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/3

Diane sue totally right about the prep..... everything needs to be level and low spots, screw holes filled in. we have done both the planks and the luxury vinyl squares at the WA house. At this house, we had the contractor do it. In WA had a contactor do most of our bathroom remodel 2 yrs ago since there was a water leak problem, and we needed to replace the wallboard in the shower with concrete board. original builder did not use the right material but it took 25yrs to find that out. we replaced 4 inch tile with 12 inch. unless you have a tile cutter like your son, it is expensive to rent one and do it yourself, since it take several days to do the project. we had a lot of tile to replace. big ceramic tiles are a lot of cutting. sometimes we do-it-ourself, other times pay someone else.

one thing that was surprising was how much dirt works its way thru carpet to the pad and to the floor. wow. I had vacuumed and shampooed the rug a lot but it was sobering to see how much dirt was underneath.

I didn't realize Amazon owned Zappos. sometimes I wonder..... what don't they own??

I was surprised about the microwave causing interference. I am not sure if we were streaming or off the antenna. we don't have the TV on that much so never noticed before. Yes, it interferes with the landline phone too.

Lori we have found so many great places to ride. the bike wheel mismatch was really kind of funny in hindsight. it took me a few minutes to realize what had happened. we often take the front wheels off to load on the bike rack, never mixed up wheels before. they look alike and 1.5 inches is not that noticeable. It was a lesson to DH not to ride off before I'm ready. there was a big creek there too, so shouting or honking was worthless. I had no choice but wait for him to realize I wasn't behind and come back. my smaller tire worked fine on his bike, and neither of us knew that his tire would be impossible on my bike.

This morning I did Sharon Twombly's Zero to Sixty, 71 minutes, 431 calories, met 5.5, heart rate 121 average, max 191 ( I looked at the chart since I was surprised at the high and it was a short blip), I then did Yoga Tune Up knee hab prehab segment, and upper tune up quick fix neck, 20 minutes, 44 calories. Total time 91 minutes, 475 calories.

This morning I did High Reps. My time was 1 hour 15 minutes with 235 calories burned. Average heart rate was 100 and maximum heart rate was 131. I tried going shopping again this morning with a little more success. I found the dress that I wanted at Macy’s. I was going to order online but I wasn’t sure of the size. I’m glad that I tried it on first because I would have gotten a size too large.

Valerie, that was very funny about your husband going off without you. I chuckled to myself because I could see that happening with us. Amazon bought Zappos a few years ago. You are right, they own so many different types of businesses.

Diane Sue, Sharon Twombly is a name that I haven’t thought about in a very long time. I remember her from the exercise channel on television. Great calorie burn on that workout.

Waving hello to Deb, Judy, and Lori. Have a nice day.

Carolyn, I bought Zero to Sixty about 5 years ago. It was one of her later ones. I like that it is all low impact. She uses 2 and 5 # dumbbells throughout the workout and there is an ab segment at the end. Also premixes. I have found that the only brand I can trust in dresses online is Calvin Klein. I always get a size 2 or small and they fit well. I haven't tried slacks though.

twombly is an unusual name. Isn’t there a guy involved in Cathe productions by that name. Is he choreographer or something? Any connection?

Valerie, Greg Twombly is the person who works on some of the Cathe productions. I don’t know if there is a connection between the two, but I’ve wondered. He and Sharon Twombly have worked on some of the same dvds.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I did the most recent LEKfit bounce. I did the complete workout with intervals. Today the leg portion was all standing legs and wow my cheeks are feeling this workout! This was all I did today. I felt completely worked after this. 47 mins / 334 cal.

Too funny with Greg Twombly. I may have invited him on FB a while ago not realizing it was his personal FB page. He accepted and now we are FB Friends and I follow along. :)

Diane Sue...my neighbor planted some around my patio fence and they were lovely but they did not survive one of our brutal winters. I was sad when they did not come back. I liked Linda’s first bounce I posted. Going to try this recent one out tomorrow. I think that Zero to Sixty is on Youtube. Going to check it out....yup it is. It looks like a great workout. I saved it for future reference.

Judy...you are going to love your new flooring. You will feel you are in a new home! I have never layed flooring on my own. We may redo our bedroom in the future and if we do thinking we could tackle it ourselves. Looking forward to here how yours comes along.

Carolyn...glad you found a dress. I am funny buying clothes online. I like to try things on too. Although, I did recently buy some shirts online at Kohls. They have not come in yet so hoping for the best. High Reps is a great workout!

Valerie...I had no idea Zappos was owned by Amazon. I know amazon recently bought Whole Foods. Who would have thought years ago that Amazon would become what the are today. It is crazy.

Hi to Deb!!

Have a great night all!

Good evening,

Our internet was down all day today, just came up a little while ago. What a pain! You don't know how much you depend on it until it is gone. What did we do before? It was a much simpler time that's for sure.

Judy, there are so many choices for flooring these day, not like it was 20 years ago when we had our kitchen done. Having new floors will be so nice. I remember how good it felt just to do the rugs going up the stairs.

Carolyn, that DVD sounds great, I am amazed that you got your husband to try it. I don't hear that many men like to do yoga.

Valerie, that is funny about the wheel switch...I am sure it was not funny at the time though. That floor is really nice.. I also did not know that Amazon owned Zappos.....I did know about Whole Foods....yep...what is next?

Diane Sue, I hope you feel better today. I had the same splitting headache this morning and most of today that you had yesterday. I woke up with it, and no matter what I took, it would not go away. Finally after an hour nap, I woke up and it is about 90% gone. Gerties is a great dog. It is amazing how they can pick up on our moods. They depend on body language, and we don't realize how many signals we are sending them all the time.

Lori, we have hardwood floors in all rooms except kitchen and baths. We are thinking of having our downstairs hardwood refinished. We did it ourselves probably 20+ years ago, and it really needs it again, however we will have someone do it this time. It's a big job and not fun. The only carpet we have is on the stairs going up to the second floor, continuing to the hall outside of the bedrooms. The stairs are oak, and we could have had just a runner put on, but we did not want to refinish them. There are trials all the time....I just entered another one at the end of this month in Rochester NY. I am a glutton for punishment. LOL. This is obedience again...this coming weekend is agility in Erie Pa. Only Sunday though. :)

Take care,

Amazon bought Zappos in 2009, it’s not a recent acquisition. I read about it at the time and our club owns some Amazon stock. We try to understand the various companies that they own, but it’s a difficult company to analyze.

Deb, my husband doesn’t really “want” to do yoga, but he gets extremely stiff and needs to stretch often. I try to find things that he will do that are not too complicated.

Adding to the info on Greg and Sharon Twombly. She has several workouts, Adrenaline Rush which I do not have, Athletic Step Jam which has a fun interesting Stability ball workout added to the end of it or to be done separately, some CIA workouts which I have a couple of. She is a physical therapist. You will find Greg Twombly's name on many instructors workouts.

Lori, I have been to Greg Twombly's facebook and seen the family pictures. I did have an article written by Sharon on physical therapy and injuries. I believe she said something about why she doesn't use burpees in her workout as many are not doing them safely. Amazon has a lot more venues than I even know about. I see you can hire services through them, floral, the new try on clothes thing. I think you have to pay a monthly fee and they send you a box of choices to try on and you choose and keep what you want to purchase. I don't spend a lot on clothing so it would not be useful for me. They have their own brand products.

Deb, I think a lot of things were a lot simpler before all of this media and computerized stuff. I have my husband's laptop back in the shop. We had internet down a month ago. I ended up paying 75 dollars for them to check and do something with outside wiring. They tried to sell me insurance before they sent out their contractor. I guess I should have paid for the insurance. My husband parked his Range Rover in the Garage and I went out and noticed his lights were on and it was weird because only the driver side headlight and tail light was on. He went out and started it back up and turned it off and the lights went out. I am tired of fixing things. I ordered a new power cord and battery for my husbands old laptop. We trouble shot it and found our cord to an all in one works on it and it must have been the old power cord along with the battery not holding a charge. We are hoping to give it to our grandson since he starts college this fall. I am feeling better today. I did feel a bit of twinges through my head and neck this morning, but it finally let up. My husband was complaining about his back and wondering if it was his workouts. I told him, maybe it is our bed. We have had the same one for quite a lot of years. Five years ago we bought 3 inch memory foam and put on it. I don't think we will be running out and buy a new bed any time soon though.

Carolyn, I could never see my husband doing yoga. I don't think that he stretches much either. I am sure it would be helpful.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. Between the internet fiasco, ( it came back on its own and I cancelled the technician appointment that was this morning), and a horrible headache I had all day, I had no energy to do a workout.

Carolyn, now that you mentioned it, I do remember Zappos being sold a while ago, but somehow either forgot or didn't know it as to Amazon. At least your husband is willing to try something to help .

Diane Sue, doesn't Greg Twombly also do KCM's workouts? At least when our cable company comes out, it is usually at no charge. I have had them here and they actually replaced boxes or whatever connections they have on the telephone poles outside that were messing up my internet and they did not charge me for that.

Hi to Judy, Lori & Valerie,

Take care,

Deb, I understand with all of that not wanting to work out. I am pretty sure Greg Twombly does the filming for KCM. I was wondering how the switch will be for him with the lean toward streaming. He has been doing the dvd work for many years.

Today I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, both workouts. It was 45 minutes and 353 calories burned. My average heart rate was 136 and maximum heart rate was 161.

Deb, I’m sorry that you had such a bad day yesterday. I hope you feel better today. It takes me another day of recovery after a headache like that. Greg Twombly is listed on the back of the Cardio Quick Fix dvd that I used this morning. It was produced and directed by him.

Lori, thanks for the video clip. Zero to Sixty looks like a workout that I might enjoy. That’s funny that you are Facebook friends with Greg. How did that come about? I can only order clothes online when I know the brand and have tried them on previously. Usually it’s just things from Chico’s or pants from Talbots.

Diane Sue, my husband complained about his back every morning until we replaced the mattress last year. There is always something to fix or replace around our house. I might try the Zero to Sixty workout sometime soon. I like her style of low impact which reminds me a lot of KCM.

Judy, I hope your projects are coming along well.

Hello to Valerie.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Total Body Sculpting and today I did High Step Circuit and the beginner DVD that came with the Fit Tower. My project for this morning was cleaning the windows and this afternoon I have a hair appointment. Last night we went to Home Depot and picked out a vanity for the upstairs bath. Chris decided that we will do the vanity & flooring ourselves so that we only have to hire someone to install the bathtub & shower.

Deb-I'm sorry about your headache :( I hope you feel better today.

Lori-Thanks for the link to the Sharon Twombly workout. That looks like a good one! I am really excited about the new flooring. I think it will make a huge difference and like you said, it will feel like a new home.

Carolyn-Nice workout today! The projects are coming along well, I just hope we can keep up the momentum and get everything finished. It would be nice to have it all within the next year.

Hi to Diane Sue & Valerie!

Judy

This morning I did Fit Split Mixed Impact cardio timesaver #1, 28 minutes, average heart rate 136, max 177, 195 calories, met 6.1, 2,521 steps and added 5 minutes on the rebounder which was 30 calories, 431 steps. This was one of the rebounder workouts Lori posted, but I stopped because my left knee started hurting. I don't know why because it was fine through Fit Split. I sometimes find that the rebounder with hard jumping makes my knee hurt on the push off. I then did Sarah Beth yoga on youtube, 20 minute morning yoga, 21 minutes, 52 calories and finished off with Yoga Tune up prehab, and knee hab #1, 26 minutes, 66 calories. I went back and did the Yoga Tune up shoulders 10 minute later, but didn't count it. Time was 81 minutes, 340 calories. My plan for tomorrow is to do upper body weights. My Fitness Pal has been weird lately. It keeps putting my workouts in separately and sometimes repeatedly posting my workout on the home page. I deleted 3 posts and it took out all of them. I just left it like that. Also this morning I finished logging yesterday and it didn't post till I did it again awhile ago. I see some others have double posting too. I called the computer place since this time they have had my husband's laptop since Monday. No one answered and I had to talk to the answering machine. I was hoping to go get it today. I had promised my grandson that I would take him to the library tomorrow.

Carolyn, now that Lori pointed out that Zero to Sixty was on youtube, I thought I should look and see if Adrenaline Rush is on there as well. I think we are overdo for a new mattress. I just don't see it happening right now. We gave the newer queen size bed to my granddaughter when we moved here. I have kicked myself for that one. It would have been a space hog upstairs, but was so comfortable. I used to take naps on it :)

Judy, doing the flooring yourselves will save you quite a bit. I definitely would not want to try the shower and tub install. I do not like messing with plumbing projects.

I agree on plumbing projects. if something can go wrong, it will. feels better when you can call back whoever did it and get them to do the fix.

Judy I hope you like the new flooring. I am much happier with hard surfaces than I was with carpet. I did end up getting several throw rugs to dampen down the noise. it is a lot louder than carpeting. cleaning is much simpler though. Costco usually has runner rugs with a rubber backing that stay in place quite well.

we did a hike this morning, but only about 2 1/2 hours. we picked something that was too high and we got into snow quickly. thought it would be patchy but no, snow was too deep and hard to get around . I was on top of a big snow bank and accidentally dropped a pole that slid downhill into the creek 12 feet below. went downstream quickly. I had to wrangle my way down to the water and after some searching I found the pole. dumb! I was lucky to get it back at all. will go back to do this one later in the year. a very pretty spot, but it goes uphill in a kind of creekbed and a lot of snow left there yet. . saw every possible kind of wildflower in the fields heading up there. it as about 7500 feet so pretty exhausting from the altitude.

we just bought 2 new mattresses for new house. depending on what you want, we were surprised at how inexpensive they were. I have a total aversion to memory foam , and so if you want a plain, firm mattress, they were not a big investment. I have no interest in sleeping on something with foam that feels like you are sunk into a bowl of warm oatmeal. horribly hot. sticky. yuck.... I can't stand the stuff. I would sleep on the floor or a rockpile rather than foam. same with pillow tops. we bought one a few years ago, very nice beautyrest . I never spent an entire night on it. I overheat and move to the guest room. all the expensive ones had memory foam or were pillow tops. so I am lucky maybe that what I like is the low end mattresses.

I feel bad for people who get displaced by new technology. Hope he has a secure spot in the industry and can survive the switch to streaming.

Valerie, I am glad that you got your pole back. The mention of the mattresses that were not real expensive reminds me of the one I mentioned that I loved to nap on. We had purchased it planning on using it for the guest room and hoping my Dad would come and stay. It was so comfortable and was not a real expensive mattress. No pillow top on it either. We didn't go for the cheapest one, but it was not the cost of the Beauty rest pillow tops and that sort of thing. I often think of those who have done a certain type of work all of their lives and suddenly they are useless in this quickly changing industry. My husband and I refuse to go to self check outs in stores because to us it puts those checkers out of a job. People become dispensable. Same with the Walmart grocery pick up. It is setup for equipment to do most of the work, you just punch buttons and review your stuff is all there. My daughter did it and they showed her how and told her they were only there to get people used to doing it themselves.

Our mattresses were somewhere in the $900 to $1500 range which by current pricing is pretty inexpensive. they are very nice though. a queen and a king. One is a Sealy, forget what the other is, but brands you've heard of. they were exactly what we wanted and are very comfortable and not too warm. a lot of the expensive ones now advertise 'cooling technology" so I must not be the only one who found pillow tops and foam unpleasantly warm.

I think one of the next big social issues will be automation replacing more and more jobs especially less skilled jobs. like checkers, fastfood workers, truck drivers. I have concerns for the future. not everyone is able to be an engineer or computer programmer, and kids especially have always used entry level jobs to learn the work place. I really worry about how many people will not be finding jobs, or get pushed out of existing jobs and replaced with machines. I put myself thru college as a grocery checker and was able to avoid student loans.
