Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 3/12

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. My cousin called at 7:00 am and wanted me to take her to an After-Hours clinic...she had a rough night. We ended up going to her regular doctor....she has the flu, a pretty bad case. She told her doctor that she had a flu shot in November.....the response was that "there are some nasty strains out there that the shot doesn't cover".

Valerie, I hope you get a HRM for your birthday that works well. If I didn't get the calorie burn numbers, I would not wear it. I guess just to watch how high you heart rate is getting to for safety purposes. Great job on the uphill ride! Too bad you missed the meteor!

Carolyn, I agree on the high cholesterol numbers...my Dad, and brother are both high...my Dad did exactly what the DR told him to, with diet etc and the numbers actually were higher at his next check.. he was pretty upset about that. He gave up all of this favorite foods for nothing! ( his words...LOL).

Diane Sue, I like having both dogs done (hopefully!). It is a huge bill, but I figure it would be the same regardless....just spread out over the year. As for the heartworm meds, if you buy a 12 month supply of the heartworm meds, through the vet..you get a rebate, which makes it more reasonable. so that how I do it.

Caitlin, that is a lot of snow! I wonder why that church only has mass twice a month?

Lori, don't you just hate when you forget to start the HRM/Watch? I get so upset when that happens. It's almost like the workout doesn't count or something. That's too bad about those cords snapping off, and I can see how that would hurt! I hope the clips they sent work. I wonder why it doesn't happen with the larger one?

Agility class this morning, then we are seeing a play this afternoon..."A View From the Bridge"...

Take care,

Deb, you are right on buying a year supply. I had not thought of that. They always give me one extra of the Frontline if I buy a 3 pack. With two larger dogs the cost was quit a lot for a year for both dogs for both meds. I have done it before. I prefer getting the Frontline at the vet because o get more. I think last year I purchased a year for Gertie and I still had some extra from Mudd so that is why I am a few months past when I usually need to purchase the Heartgard. I think I got 25 dollars in the rebate.

I get our kitty's anti flea meds from the vet too. you get an extra 2 vials free when I buy a 6 pack. makes it cheaper than online or Costco. I use Revolution, what my vet recommends for this area. a 6 pack plus 2 extra vials is good for the year. I don't use it during the winter but I don't know if that is an option everywhere.

Deb, hope your cousin feels better soon. yep, nothing is 100%. I haven't had flu in so long I can't even remember.

There was a long standing joke that doctors would be forever bedeviled by the diets they've recommended over the years. no question the same thing doesn't work for everyone. I have been fortunate. it's too bad it takes a long time to see what is working and what isn't. and ordering f/up labs is expensive.

I've never used a HRM for outdoor riding and I'm curious to see how hard I'm actually working. also for indoor things since it's been cumbersome for a long time.
Lori that stinks that cords are popping off. you use it pretty hard but equipment should be built to last longer than a few uses.

too funny... I hate it when I forget to start my timer! feel like I HAVE to do it even if I'm already riding. I forgot yesterday but realized it less than 10 minutes into the ride. I don't like to start it before we actually pedal since we compare how long it takes us to do the same mileage. It should be the last thing I do as I hop on. the bike has a simple computer that tracks time miles, and overall mileage but not heart rate or revolutions.
we can ride by several lakes. this time of year we start to see spring birds arriving so stop to check them out. saw swallows yesterday but no ducks yet. I have a rear carrier on my bike so I can carry "stuff" like binoculars. this is a fairly "wilderness-y" area. we always carry extra tire tubes, pump, tools water and snacks. we are going to start taking bear spray. there is one person we see occasionally who walks a vicious dog. it always seems almost out of control. it's a big dog (like a mastiff ) and tries very hard to go after bicycles. ignores us when we are on foot. one hit of bear spray will put a stop to it. the owner could use a squirt too. I hate irresponsible pet owners.

Today I had an appointment this morning to fix my cell phone. They are sending me another phone. The guy said that is weird how it is acting. So, I guess I will be setting up another phone. I was hoping to forgo all of that. That is why I took it in. My workout time was limited and my neck and shoulders are sore from sitting over the computer the last couple of days trying to troubleshoot my cell phone. So I just did Ripped with Hiit Lift it Hit it Lower Body, 41 minutes, 271 calories, 2,125 steps.

Lori, I am sorry to hear that about the cords on the smaller Jump Sport. Is that the one you got from Costco? Maybe that is why they were selling for such a good deal? I hope what they sent you works. I think that they should replace it. It is their product. I had purchased Frontline a few times off of Amazon when I found a decent price. Although there was some discussion by reviewers on whether it was the right stuff as it did not seem to work as well. I have not had a problem though. I just started using the vet because it seems to be the best deal.

Valerie, I have not heard of Revolution. It seems my vets office had something different looking on the shelf but I just stuck with what I usually get. If we have a very hard freeze for an extended time I don't use the Frontline. This winter it hardly got below freezing so I have continued use. After losing Mudd to tick born illness I am afraid not to. Although I am not sure how that works because from what I understand the critters do not fall off till they have bitten? At least that is my understanding. Yes, diets and nutritional needs are different for different people. Stress levels etc, also cause different requirements. Although, I do not think sugar is a good choice in anyone's diet. My husband keeps telling me I should get tilapia since I like it so much, when we go out. I used to buy it from Schwan's a lot. Then I realized it is so bad and a mutated fish. I quit eating it. He was talking about it last night because someone he knew was talking about eating it on facebook. You do some hard riders, it would be interesting to see how you do. A Mastiff is a dog that definitely needs to be under control. We had one once that was a big baby and afraid of everything. Big old dog crawled as far as she could get under the bench at the vets to hide. If that was at all possible.

Today is a rest day for me. I had an appointment this morning and it has been gray and rainy all day. It should clear up later today and get warmer.

Valerie, my cholesterol levels were related to lifestyle issues. I was still working long and stressful hours, not exercising and not eating as I should have been. When I started to pay attention to my health and change some things I did much better. I have learned that I need to eat as clean as possible most of the time with occasional indulgences. I exercise for mental as well as physical health.

Diane Sue, we used to eat tilapia all the time until I learned more about it. I once thought that we could trust our food sources, but I have discovered that there are many items for me to avoid. Sugar is definitely on that list as well processed foods. Some people can eat them without problems, but not me.

Greetings to everyone.

I like tilapia and it is just about the only fish DH will eat willingly. I've tried cod and rockfish but no good for him. nothing with bones will work. halibut is OK too, but too expensive to use regularly. what do you use instead of tilapia? he absolutely detests most seafood so no salmon, tuna, shrimp, and so on. thought he'd eat mahi mahi but no.. I like salmon but it's hard for me to cook some as he complains about the smell endlessly. he eats a pretty decent diet mostly but about 2x as much as me. Carolyn that is nice when you do the right thing and get good results. we eat almost no processed food. I won't say "none" .

diane sue there are different flea and tick meds depending on what the local risks are. I've read that some fleas and ticks are developing resistance too. you should use what the local veterinarians feel works best for the area.

Carolyn, good job on adjusting your diet for your health. I think money is worth more to our government than peoples health when it comes to all of the modified foods. I don't trust a lot of it.

Valerie, I tend to buy a lot of mahi mahi. It is not so strong on the fishy smell. I like orange roughy but I don't find it often. If you find good cod it is not too bad. Halibut is up there in price. Sprouts had some decent fish but it is rarely on their special except salmon and raw shrimp. I bought a bag of the Texas shrimp once during grilling season and I really had to make myself choke it down. It was stronger than I have ever had in smell and taste and I had to clean all of the disgusting stuff off of it. I won't do that again. It seemed gritty. Yes, salmon has a stronger smell. Have you tried wrapping the fish in foil and baking it? They say that helps with the smell. I like sea scallops once in awhile, but they are always higher in price. Shell fish is high in cholesterol though.

Wow, Diane Sue, I feel bad for your dog. I love all animals. I still worry and pray for my close friend Bill, who had agent orange, and now has brain cancer, and I hate how our soldiers were treated when they came back from that war. Today I did Rock Out Knock, the whole thing, but the last two combos, I took my two pound weighted gloves off, and I took my pulse after, and it was 70. I did bi's and tri's. I gave up hi-lo, and I can't do fast feet. Does anybody know an HRM that works?

Valerie, I think you have to be careful about the source for tilapia. You should avoid tilapia from China due to some issues with the farming situation and the water quality in the ponds. Tilapia from US or Canada is best but is not as plentiful. We love salmon and that's our main fish. I also buy halibut and sometimes cod. I think I have mentioned that I order most of my fish from Vital Choice. It is shipped on ice and 2 day air. I have been ordering from them since 2012.

Yes, I know about sources for tilapia... south America, Colombia is not good. I never eat anything from china ( I think all gingerroot is from there) but certainly not fish. It is so hard because food labeling of ingredients may not always be accurate or complete. china would grind up car parts and put it into food if they thought they could get away with it.
DH won't touch most of what both of you mentioned. I think the only "future" fish will be farmed fish because we have fished out so much wild stock. I wish DH would eat salmon because we have easy access to fresh wild fish here, mostly from AK. I like it a lot but he absolutely detests it. I liked mahi mahi but that failed DH, and I won't eat tuna either. I had carfish a couple times that was good, but don't see it lately.

I did Ramped upper body today. went to 30 lbs on the first move, but that kind of burned me out. I think I will go back to 25 and try to spread the available energy through the bulk of workout.
