Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/12

Congrats on getting back on the horse and doing a workout!.
Deb I have two versions of squash soup I use. both are creamy after using an emersion blender. the directions say to run the soup through a jar blender a couple cups at a time. that's messy and a bit dangerous as hot liquids tend to erupt out of the blender top. I've always used an immersion or stick blender. you stick it right in the pot and blend away. you need to keep the working end submerged or else you can end up with soup on the walls but way less messy than using a blender jar.
one is triple ginger, another has ginger and orange juice. I almost always use cooked frozen squash from the previous year's garden so my procedure is different than the recipe. my squash is cooked and frozen. both versions are very flexible. I garnish bowl each with a small chop of green onions, cilantro, toasted pepitas, and for my bowl, red pepper flakes. any combination ( or none) of those is fine. a plain bowl of creamy orange soup needs a little color and texture contrast... IMO. will post the recipes later. hopefully I can find the "official" versions. I cook a lot ( have I said that before??) and adjust things to my equipment and tastes.

I can't find this one online. ,Terry joyce blonder recipe.
Gingerly Pumpkin soup (interchangeable with butternut squash)
2 tsp canola oil
2 shallots mined
1 small onion
1/2 TB grated ginger root
2 cups pumkin puree
1 cup OJ
2 cups vegie or chicken broth
1 tsp salt
1 tsp orange zest
pepper to taste
pinch cloves
1/4 cup toasted pepitas
heat oil, sauté shallot, onion, ginger til soft. add all other ingredients, simmer for 10 min garnish with parsley and pepitas.

Deb, I use frozen cooked squash. with both soups, I run a immersion blender thru them when cooked enough. neither soup has any added sweetening. I love ginger and tend to use more than written. taste it ands see if it needs anything and garnish with pepitas, peanuts, parsley, cilantro..whatever! these are both very flexible and good.

we did a road ride yesterday 15 miles about 70 minutes. not that hard but a lovely spring like afternoon with frogs chirping like crazy. the repairs on our regular trail ride will be done by Tuesday and then we can go back to our regular distance of 25-30 miles. we started out to try a snowshoe but it was raining hard at time to leave. it cleared off later so it was our mistake.
DH looked at my foot and said I had a neuroma. I've had them before. I need to remind myself what it is, but I think it's just an inflamed nerve on the ball of my foot. ( handy having a doctor in the house) the hip pain went away in hours but the foot was still hurting. getting better little by little. pretty decent today. I am pretty sure it was pressure from standing during spinning. will need to find a better pair of shoes. I have some 'studio" shoes that might help, or light hiking boots. I was using plain running shoes. I can't wear rigid cycling shoes at all.

Diane sue... 40's would be quite a load to pull. that one time... I felt so silly when I looked down and realized I'd grabbed 30's instead of 25's but not that big a jump for me. 35's will take a while! maybe it just sounds a lot heavier??? I am more cautious about over loading on the first moves when there's a whole series of exercises that follow, like in ramped up.

Judy hope you are feeling better by now but take it easy until you are recovered.

Today I did a short workout since I had my grandson here. I chose Ice Boot Camp Circuit no upper mix, 36 minutes, 238 calories. I like this mix when I want a bit of cardio and to hit the lower body. Unlike the S&S Bootcamp premix that has the lower body mix but still includes the metabolic segment. I went heavier than Cathe's weights on the lower body weight work. I would have liked to do a lower body stretch. Maybe I will still get it in today.

Valerie, ginger would be good in a squash soup. I don't like it sweet though. I recently purchased some Pacific brand squash soup when I wasn't feeling well and I ended up throwing half of it out. It was sweet and had cinnamon in it. It just wasn't to my tastes I guess. I like it with onion and garlic in it. I do not have a problem with hot stuff in my blender jar as long as I keep the little cap in the top partially open. It can be a real mess if you don't. I have an immersion blender that I used once in awhile. I like it because I can control how smooth I want the soup to be. I sometimes like it to have a bit of pieces in it.
When I did the 40# dumbbell rows, it was with the low reps on STS mesocycle 3. Cathe seems to move fairly easily through 25 and 30 # for dumbbells on biceps and that is a weak area for me. I can get 22.5 most of the time but it takes me some work to do 25's anymore. I can do a few reps and again it depends on how fast and how much rest between sets. Things like giant sets, I have to lighten up a bit or I will be dropping weight at the end. I like getting a few heavier reps in if I can just to build up a bit more strength, but not if I think I might injure something IT is not worth it. Ramped up moves pretty fast from exercise to exercise. When I do the double or triple sets I really have to watch the weight increments.

No workout for me today. I just didn't feel like it when I woke up this morning. Sometimes I want a slower pace in the morning and I had a hair appointment later. Unfortunately that took most of my day for no particular reason. My hair stylist was swapped today and I had more wait time than usual.

I like to use heavier weights when doing a straight forward workout, but I always go lighter with metabolic workouts and others that move at a faster pace. I do the same with an unfamiliar trainer.

Deb, I previewed the Rapid Fire workouts on Total Fitness and on Susan Chung's website. They are all separate workouts, not a set. I ordered mine from Amazon. Great job on your treadmill workout. I find it harder to get started again if I wait too long.

I hope everyone is doing well.

This is really funny. The shopping cart that I pulled up and down hills is still at the side of our house,

Deb, you should be able to watch rapid fire clips on total fitness.. Also there is a website for Susan Chung. I would have to look it up as I have it bookmarked on my tablet.

Caitlin, were you going up and down hills to shop? That sounds like quite a bit of work if you were pushing a shopping cart.

Hello to you lovely ladies. I tried to go to Confession and Mass, buy Catskill is rather small. I walked home. I had done my higher body, and I have doms in my bi's and tri's. I found out that the church 9nly has confession and Mass only the last week in the month. I know I am out of shape, because I was doing calf exercises with 40 pound and I had switch to 30. I have to do cardio tomorrow.
